Except Pirlo was far more dynamic and willing to try and make something happen in the final third.

No he wasn't. He played exactly like a Spanish midfielder would. This "Spain only pass sidewards" myth is utter bollocks.

Spain does have more penetration that some people seem to think, even with a false 9 in Fabregas, but I also certainly feel Spain is playing more and more sideways as the years go by.. this France game really was amusing, once they were up one goal they almost gave up trying to score and focused only on retaining the ball all game long. Obviously 90% of the fault for that relies on France for not reacting at all after going down.
