Welshace
with that sort of size screen.. laptops generally come with i5's as the highest spec in that budget.. so look to get a quality second gen i5 processor, at least 4gb ram, 200gb hdd and dedicated graphics. http://search.laptopsdirect.co.uk/nav/pbgbp/07/processor/corei5/type/laptops/screensize/02/0?isort=price as an idea ... see above
Wakers
That's too much to spend on a laptop that's main use is FM. Especially with such a small screen.
Welshace
http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Asus_U36SG_13.3_Core_i5_Windows_7_Laptop__U36SG-RX107X/version.asp that for instance .. would be great for fm.... just research into the various components and pick carefully... Wakers
I wouldn't buy a laptop of any sort for that money, but that's me. You can get i5's with 4GB of Ram for ~£450 or cheaper if you're patient. For £700 I'd be after a desktop. If you don't want / can't use a desktop, save the money for something else.
Welshace
well.. you're paying for the type of i5 and the extra's like graphics cards etc.... i paid £600 for my lappy.. and that was dirt cheap for what i got

Wakers
For FM, Intel HD3000 is acceptable. It's actually comparable to a dedicated 520M or 6250M, so beware of that when you're looking.

A HD3000 is more than acceptable if FM is the only game you'll be playing. you might well be able to just about get a core i7 for £700. It would certainly be worth it. thomit
I would look at the Asus U46SV if you want thin, elegant, and with processor and graphic card that goes a bit. Core i5 and Nvidia GT 540M should get you a long way. Build quality is excellent.

It might have been longer, but I don't keep my eye on UK prices as much since I left - only when I'm helping someone out do I go back in and research. Colorado
I bough a HP laptop for around £350, runs FM12 fine with a good few leagues.
thomit
Remember, not all Core i7's are quad cores. If it's a quad core you're after, look for mobile i7's that ends with QM in it's model name, not just M. For example, Core i7 2720QM. Also, the new Intel "Ivy Bridge" mobile processors has the Intel HD 4000 graphic chip onboard, it's very much improved from the HD 3000. The HD 4000 can handle many modern games on medium settings, where with the HD 3000 you would most of the time have to play on low settings. (And low resolution). Wakers
I thought all core i7's in laptops were quad cores? If it's an i5 it's a dual core with 2 virtual cores. The i7's are all 4 physical cores, then either 2 or 4 more virtual cores depending on the model.
thomit
No. For example, the Core i7 2620M 2 physical cores + 2 logical cores = 4 Threads. (HyperThreading) Those with a QM at the end, are quad cores, those with just a M are dual cores. QM's are 4 physical cores + 4 logical cores = 8 Threads. You can view the dual core i7's as i5's on steroids.

They really should have seperate names for laptop and desktop setups, the average user has no hope of understanding that or knowing what models do what. Something like this; http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_5755G_15.6_HD_Ci7-2670QM_8GB_750GB_DVD_6-cell_CAM_WiFi__GT540M_LX.RQ002.075/version.asp Although the screen is 15"
