Sikker
Having just installed steam and made an account I am presented with a virus alert stating: File name: c:\Program Files\ShoppingReport2\Bin\2.7.37\ShoppingReport.dll Thread name: Adware Generic4.CDBG Can I trust this? I am using AVG.

Sikker
Actually it is not a virus alert. It is a "Potential unwanted program detected". And I haven't installed anything else but steam.
brendy
then it mostly like from another program as ive had steam for 5+ years and its never installed anything called shoppingreport2
Administrators Neil Brock Posted October 6, 2011 Administrators Share Posted October 6, 2011 I'd suggest uninstalling Steam, running your virus scanner to remove any kind of spyware etc then reinstalling. It sounds to be as the spyware has been lying dormant until you installed Steam, now it's latched onto that when it launched. I'd be extremely surprised if it was installed alongside Steam, I've done a quick search online and there's nothing to suggest it's related by install. Let me know how you get on, thanks. Sikker
OK, I guess I am moving it to the virus vault then. I uninstall steam - do the virus check and see what will happen.
Mazaveli
Pretty certain that program has nothing to do with Steam
Rafa2007
Nothing to do with Steam, had Steam for years and never had anything like that across 4 computers I've installed it on.
monkeezgob
Sounds odd..even for something as questionable as Steam.
Shake Appeal
Whatever it is, it's nothing to do with Steam. Steam is not 'questionable', it's the premier PC gaming delivery mechanism in the world, made by the single most respected and revered PC game developer in the world. chob
Had steam for ages and never encountered anything like this. It must be related to something else.

monkeezgob
Steam may have a 70% share of the market, but being the biggest, or the most powerful rarely equates to being 'the best'. As for it being developed by 'the most revered' developer in the world, that's a highly debatable matter of opinion.
Sikker
OK. I removed the folder AVG complained about -> uninstalled steam -> did a virus check that found nothing -> rebooted the pc. Then reinstalled steam and are now dl the demo. Nothing weird happened. I've always been very careful about what is installed but I guess having a 6½ old pc and still running the same win xp install one are bound to experience odd things like this :o Anyways, thanks for all the advice, guys - much appreciated! Sure, maybe the games are rated for Mature audiences only, but that's just one aspect of a game and despite restricted audiences, sells tons.
