Club History and New Era

Crystal Palace Football a professional English Football league club based in South Norwood, London. The team plays its home matches at Selhurst Park, where they have been based since 1924. The club currently competes in The Championship.

Crystal Palace was formed in 1905 by workers at The Crystal Palace. The club reached the top division of English Football in 1969–70, and their first major final was in 1990. They were relegated from the top division in 1973 and once again in the following season. That left the club playing in the third tier of English football for the 1974–75 season, before being promoted back to the top level by 1979–80.

Crystal Palace's most recent successful period began in 1988–89, when the club finished third in the Second Division and was promoted to the First Division. They reached the 1990 FA Cup Final only to lose the replay against Manchester United, and finished 3rd in the First Division in 1990–91. Palace was a founding member of the FA Premier League (1992–93) but was relegated that season. Since then Palace has been relegated from and promoted to the FA Premier League on a number of occasions. Their most recent relegation from the top flight was in the 2004–05 season.

The Glory Days: "super-sub" Ian Wright

The club has twice gone into administration, first in 1998, which ended in 2000 with the purchase by Simon Jordan, who had made his money as an owner of Pocket Phone Shop. The club spent much of its time in the Championship over the next 10 years with a brief spell in the Premier League during 2004/05, but the club went straight back down on the last day of the season. Jordan was unable to put the club on a sound financial footing after 2008, and the club were subject to transfer embargoes. Palace were placed in administration once again in January 2010, owing Jordan himself around £20m. The Football League's regulations saw the Eagles deducted ten points, and they were forced to sell key players including Victor Moses and José Fonte. Survival in The Championship was only secured on the final day of the season after a memorable 2–2 draw at Sheffield Wednesday.

Lost Talent: Victor Moses

During the close season CPFC 2010, a consortium consisting of several wealthy fans, successfully negotiated the purchase of the club stadium. Led by Steve Parish, the vocal representative for a consortium that included Jeremy Hosking, CPFC 2010 eventually secured a deal for the football club itself, with Parish becoming chairman. The consortium swiftly installed George Burley as the Eagles' new manager. However a difference it aims for the club left Burley on his way out just after a few days in charge. It was highly expected that club hero Dougie Freedman, assistant to Burley would take that reins. The bookies favourite was left disappointed as the consortium decided to bring in young Irish manager Simon Casey, this represented a major re-shuffle to help to push Palace back to the premiership. Soon after the arrival of Casey, Freedman left the club due to the decision not to put him in the driving seat. Casey in his first press conference went on to state his feeling towards Freedman along with his ambitions for the club.

“ I have great respect for Dougie and I hope there is no bad blood between us, I would have loved to have been able to work with him but unfortunately that will not be the case. I will be hoping to bring Palace up to the premierships as soon as I can but I know this will not be an easy task. My aims for the near future will be to build a team who can grow together over the years and stabilize the club. I will be looking to bring in some of my own backroom staff, and some fresh faces to the squad if possible.”

Other coaches to come in were John Treacy, Tosh Farrel and Gary Brazil. Ex Ireland international Alan Kelly has come in as the new goalkeeper coach and Brierley will be the new fitness coach. Gary issott was the only saviour of the former coaching staff. Also joining the new set up was one new physio and three new scouts. With his new set of staff around him Casey is expected to make a move into the transfer market in the coming few days, he is reported to have £2 million to spend and a wage budget of around £115k p/w in return for a top half finish.

Five New Eagles

Casey hasn’t been in charge long but he has already left his mark on the transfer market, with five new players joining. The five new Eagles have cost the club £1.05 million in total, quite cheap thanks to three free signings. The calibre of the newcomers are surprisingly high despite the low combo price tag.

This new Eagle will be looking to soar in the scoring charts : Wason Renteria

First to join was Wason Renteria, a 25 year old Colombian striker who has had a hit and miss career so far. The 6ft 1 forward was signed on a free after being released by Porto in the summer, Wason only made 6 appearances for the Portuguese giants and spent most of his time on loan. Casey believes that Renteria will be a major player this season and has stated already he expects the Colombian to take to the English game with ease and hopes of a return of 20 plus goals for the faith his Irish manager has in his ability. A day later in came exciting prospect Marco Verratti, signing from Pescara for a cool £500k. The young Italian midfielder joined to the delight of palace fans. Marco is extremely talented and will be a long servant to the club and according to manager Casey he will become a club legend, if they can hold onto him that is.

The next day saw even more arrivals at Crystal Palace with two new faces joining the ranks. Dzmitry Verkhovtsov and Ahmed Soukouna. Verkhovtsov, brought in from Naftan for a price of £550k is a strong center back with a great leap, the Belarus international is a menace is the air. Dzmitry also has an eye for a pass and can be deployed in midfield if needs be. Soukouna was another free transfer, the ex-Toulouse striker can play on the wing and possess lighting speed. Ahmed, 21 is one to watch. Last of the five is Jose Goncalves on a free transfer, a speedy defender who can play in the center or on the left. The 25 year old is a former Portuguese under 21 international and was last seen playing for Hearts in the Scottish league.

Casey has strengthen his defence and attack highly so far, yet he has brought in a very exciting youngster to his midfield. With half his budget left to spend the question is how many if any new faces will he be adding. Have your say who he should bring in, who would u sign?
