The Rangers, Champions of Scotland thread: Season 05/06

Strange one. I know Mileson's desire was really to take on Carlisle, but the board refuted him, so he chose Gretna. Not quite sure what the lure was there. How a town with a population of 2500 people will compete in the SPL will certainly make interesting viewing.

Good luck to them though, and they seem to be going about things the right way.

Fair point, but there's still going to be quite a low glass ceiling somewhere along the line. For a guy of his wealth and ambition, I find the situation a bit odd. Wouldn't like to see the arse fall out of the team in five years time when he decided he had bigger fish to fry.

I don't know much about the guy so can't really judge his motives.

But same could be said for other club's money men who, for the most part, pick one club and stick by them.

Scottish league isn't a bad place to buy a small team, pay comparatively small wages, be able to rise through divisions quickly because of small investment, then quickly qualify for Europe.

If he does manage that by 20010, then he can set his sights on the CL or any other Euro league that's around then.

Nice wee project for a football hobby... icon_wink.gif

Gretna are still seeking planning permission for a new ground and should get it sonner rather than later. It shows what a little money can do.

It wouldn't surprise me if they knocked Clyde out of the Cup and were competing for promotion in Division 1 next year.

Also, hearing now that the 2nd IRA karaoke video (starring Hartson on his own) has now proven to be genuine after all. I don't think Hartson is singing any of the nasty words but once again such association and tolerance of others doing so is rather disappointing.

Wonder what club officials and MP's were at this 'private' function singing the 'political, folk' songs...? I'm not sure if this venue is as dodgy as the last one either... icon_wink.gif

I do hear Celtic have promised to seriously investigate the first one. I suppose that's good news, but given the last time they promised to investigate something, I don't hold out much hope of any action being taken.

Certainly seems as if Hartson is having a few off-the-field problems right now. Still think he's a good player and it's a pity that he seems to condone the behaviour of the minority.

Players like Hartson (and Malcolm with respect to his signature of 2 years ago) should really be above this stuff and walk away if asked. Might not be easy to do so, but would set a much better example than getting caught out.

The message has to be made much clearer from all clubs that this kind of moronic behaviour will not be tolerated.

I don't know a hell of lot either Frankie, but it is an interesting scenario, so I'd be more than willing to listen to any Gretna fans able to fill us in.

I just see the situation at somewhere like Raith where they got themselves into a terrible mess, and fans are now being forced to dip into their pockets and bail out mismanagement and over-expenditure. Now, at Gretna, it looks like they have a more stable backer, who has some affinity with the club and fans but that funding, for whatever reason, can be taken away as quickly as invested.

I've heard a few rumours this afternoon about the announcement on radio clyde tonight. Most seem a bit far fetched.

For what it's worth, I very much doubt anything of real substance will come of of this.

If there were any real big announcements to be made, there would be a press conference. This will just be a bit of flim-flam to appease the masses which most of should take with a pinch of salt until we hear something concrete.

First one is a load of nonsense.

Second one is realistic.

Doubt the third one would happen unless they get the green light to build the casino, which I don't think has been granted to Glasgow yet.

Nah, no idea really mate. If Radio Clyde's idea of an exclusive was Derek Johnston phoning in to say in the vaguest possible terms that there will be 'movement soon', then I don't think they'll be winning any investigative journalism awards.

If the first were true, which I doubt, then I wouldn't be happy.

2nd wouldn't bother me - I'd still call it Ibrox.

3rd seems alright.

I'd rather you stopped embarrassing the rest of us with your daft comments. The scandal you mention is a disgrace, no doubt about it, but people raising it continually is totally pointless.

As for the Soccerhell reply, well, that sums up just how amateur this 'company' are. </div></BLOCKQUOTE>

The whole "Big Jock Knew" thing really gets on my tits as well. I personally think it's a disgrace the way the whole scandal was covered up to the extent it was, but child abuse shouldn't be used to score points over your fiercest rivals.

Agreed GF.

I remember having a big argument on the old FF board with some so-called high profile guys on there.

I think most that post such crap are usually spotty teenagers who don't appreciate the significance of the story and the fact that, although it was covered up, most people are aware of it anyway.

At that time, I got a few of the guys to admit, it wasn't constructive to use the term or to point score with it. Most eventually agreed, but unfortunately, it's still prevalent amongst many Rangers fans who don't have the gumption to realise that essentially it's a non issue which should remain in the past.

None of us know the real story and as such none of us are really suitable to make judgement on Jock Stein or any other person allegedly involved in any cover up.

As such, I'd prefer that Colin (and any other Rangers fan on here) didn't raise it again. It's just not relevant to any debate IMO.

RE: The Clyde 'Excusive'... icon_biggrin.gif

Seems this was a wee ploy from Clyde to try and get some listeners back from the ever-so slightly better Real Radio phone in.

As such, more patience required from us bears. I just hope our chairman does have something concrete for our trust not to be misplaced. For what it's worth, in this matter, I do believe him regarding this substantial investment. I'm not so sure exactly when this will happen or how much of it Eck will get to spend.

I reckon the bulk of it will eradicate any outstanding debt but also feel any monies left over won't be fully utilised until the summer. What will be most interesting is if the investor will dilute DM's 91.8% shareholding and have a say in the running of the club. This investment,a long with the proposed ShareSave scheme from the headcases at the RST, means hopefully the disappointments on the park this season will hopefully be replaced with encouragement for a fresh start in various areas for next term. Starting with the appointment of a new, quality manager in late May,/early June.

Do you think this 'investment' is going to happen once the transfer window is closed so there is no pressure to release funds to McLeish as Murray knows that a new person is coming in at the end of the season?

I honestly don't know mate.

We can look at the investment in several ways.

1. Eck receives all the money as he's staying long term.

2. Eck receives some money to allow us to challenge for 2nd place but not enough to suggest he's involved in the long term planing.

3. Eck receives some money to spend under the guidance of a 3rd party with the rest to be spent later when the 3rd part actually takes over.

I hope it's number 3 but we'll just have to wait and see.

One thing we can't afford to do is take our eye of the ball. We have a CL place to clinch from 3 decent other teams. We shouldn't take their challenge lightly.

The financial incentives are there obviously (amongst other things), but if someone new is to be entering the fray in the summer, Champions League football might be an unneccesary distraction, for a year at least. Sorting out our domestic form is priority.

I'm not sure Celtic would be where they are in the league at the moment if they'd had five group games to go through as well.

3rd spot seems a more realistic goal anyway now. We've shown improvement in the last couple of weeks but not enough to suggest we'll catch Hearts.

I don't really think the Champions League has had much of an effect on our league performances. We've been dire in the league and in Europe bar a battling performance at home to Porto and two games against Inter. We were awful away to Porto and the away game against Artmedia. At home to Artmedia we just couldn't score.

That said, we're in the last 16 and have two games against Villarreal to look forward to and it would be nice if we could get one or two more players in before then. The priority has to be getting into the Champions League next season. We aren't going to win it this year so we must at least get 2nd place. Although maybe a wee UEFA Cup campaign with a new manager and less pressure would be a good thing football wise, but not for the money men.

quite possibly with the the team we have at the moment, but we have done the whole CL groups and got to the latter stages of a european tournament with arguably a better league record (long way to go i know). Indeed we won nothing which, as you'll know has been forceably rammed down our throats for the last few years, so you'll get no sympathy from this side icon_razz.gif

I'd go with...

Klos

Hutton

Smith

Kyrgiakos

Andrews

Ferguson

Murray

Burke

Buffel

Lovenkrands

Boyd

I reckon he'll play The Mullet and Novo though, but I can't see how we can fit Lovenkrands, Boyd, Buffel, Burke AND Novo all into the same side... so I'd leave Nacho out.
