Thanks gil, glad you're enjoying it

August 2010

Our form took a turn for the worse in August and from the possible 18 points on offer we only came away with 3. First was a trip to Parana, whose bad form had put the relegation question mark hanging over their heads so early in the season. We had met previously in the Second Division and we had yet to beat them. In my opinion this was our best chance of turning around the bad record whilst they were rooted to the bottom of the table. However, we couldn't take advantage of their bad form and in fact it was Parana who took the lead, Oliveira heading home in the first half. It took until deep in the second half to respond, teenager Pablo Correa with a thunderous volley to level the scores. Try as we might, we couldn't find a winner and the game finished 1-1.

Next up was another team that we had a horrendous record against, Bahia. With a stroke of luck however, it was us that took the lead. David accidentally heading into his own net to gift us 1-0 lead. These days Bahia are an impressive side and it didn't take them long to find an equaliser, Val Baiano with a typically powerful performance and a finish to match making it 1-1. Pablo Correa had a terrific effort saved as it could have been 2-1. In the end we were lucky not to get beaten heavily as we were reduced to 9 men late on as first Clecio was dismissed for a professional foul and then young full back Jorge Gimenez received a second bookable offence. Thanks to some brilliant goalkeeping from Barbosa we were able to hold out for another 1-1 draw.

After holding out for two precious draws, our unbeaten run finally came to an end depite our best efforts against São Caetano. We fell behind early as Raulen converted a penalty. Pablo Correa soon equalised as he continued to enjoy himself in Wellington's absence. Paulo Ramos re-asserted Caetano's advantage only to see Pereira score an own goal and level it at 2-2. Caetano managed to score again before half time through 17 year old Paulo and the 4-2 victory was sealed in the second half thank to a goal from Obina. Late on in the game, Whoshington lost his cool and was sent off for violent conduct.

In the year that Vitoria were crowned Second Division champions we had actually managed to do the double over them but we were to have no such luck this time round. Pablo Correa did manage to find the net once more but goals from Junior and Advaldo wrapped up a 2-1 win for the Bahia state side. Next up was a dangerous looking Coritiba outfit who gave us problems from the word go. Despite the pressure we took the lead through Juan Guillermo Pinzon, the winger had just returned from Colombian Under 20's duty and made a big impact in this game. It didn't last long though as goals from Nunes and Fabio soon turned the tables. We were able to grab an equaliser as Fagner Galvao smashed in one of his trademark long strikes. That was how it stayed as we claimed our thrid and last point of August. Galvao was on the score sheet again against Botafogo but his well placed shot was cancelled out by two Quirino goals as Botafogo continued their march up the table and we continued our decline dropping back into 14th.

At half time during the Botafogo match Sam received a message whilst in the dug-out. He was go and see Wolfgang in the directors box as soon as possible. The teams were at that moment all square at 1-1 and he left Ronaldo in charge for the second half whilst he went to meet Wolfgang. It had to be serious for him to call Sam out in the middle of a match, and the that hung precariously in the balance as this one was. Sam signed a few autographs from the fans before entering the directors box. Just as he came in, Mauro and Genesio along with some of the club's entourage were leaving. Wolfgang obviously did not want this conversation to be heard by anyone. When Sam entered, Wolfgang was staring intently at the events on the pitch.

"What's wrong?"

"You better take a look at this"

He handed Sam a letter.

Herr Wolfenstein (or should I say Aichinger?),

First of all I would like to apologise for the rather unpleasant behaviour we have shown since our master's incarcaration, it is Helmut that I write on the behalf of. We have decided that for once violence is not the answer to our mutual troubles, we wish to resolve this matter the diplomatic way and request your presence at a meeting of which the time and location will be given to you later on. You can even bring your little English friend if you wish but we would kindly ask that you both come unarmed, alone and without the interference of the police. We look forward to seeing you.

mit freundlichen Grüßen,

Gunther Krieg

Vizepräsident der Nationalistischen Partei Deutschland

Sam handed the letter back to Wolfgang.

"It's a trap, you do know that?"

"We don't have a choice, if we don't go they'll have our heads on a plate regardless"

"So what's the plan?"

"Give me a while to think"

Down on the pitch there was a groan from the fans as Botafogo went 2-1 up, Sam ran back down to pitchside whilst Wolfgang remained in his seat. He scrunched the letter up in his fist and for the first time ever he didn't have a plan of action.

September 2010

August had been a terrible month for us, but September beckoned a complete turnaround as we were to reverse our fortunes in the league. However the month started in an all to familiar fashion with the visit of Atletico Mineiro, the newly crowned Copa Libertadores champions. Yet another penalty decision to go our way and yet another Clecio conversion put us 1-0 up early on. We were to double our lead around 10 minutes later through Whoshington, who as an ex-Cruzeiro player must have loved scoring against his former rivals. But true to form (at least recently anyway) we squandered the two goal advantage. First Rafael Lopes managed to pull one back just before the break and then in the second half Brazil Under 20 regular Marco Aurelio saved a point for the visitors as the game ended 2-2.

Incidentally Mineiro's arch rivals Cruzeiro would be the next visitors to the Baixada, there was definately a score to settle as Cruzeiro had played shockingly in our last meeting and somehow walked away with a win. The first half was a tight affair but the deadlock was broken critically just before the break, Pablo Correa with a superb individual effort. The lead was short lived as Cruzeiro countered right from the re-start and midfielder Marcio Egidio scored a wonder goal from 40 yards out to make it 1-1. Would you believe it yet another Clecio penalty was the source of victory late on as despite a tough challenge from Cruzeiro we walked away with a 2-1 victory, our first in what felt like a very long time.

Flamengo at the Maracana was not a fixture I was looking forward to especially with the Rio side in a particularly revengeful mood. They had been the first team we had beaten since promotion and the embarrasment was something they were desperate to put right. It looked as though they were well prepared to do so early on as Romulo beat the offside trap and slid the ball past Barbosa to put the home side 1-0 up. But it seemed that we were to become a "bogey side" for Flamengo as first Whoshington equalised and then late on CAHA's record goalscorer of all time Wellington found a winner and wrapped up our second straight win.

We were to face another Rio de Janeiro side next but this one was sat at the top of the table. Fluminense had surprised everyone this season and were currently engaged in a title battle with another surprise contender Atletico Paranaense. At point I was convinced we were heading for a third straight win as by half time we were 2-0 up thanks to goals from Wellington and Whoshington. Flu hit back through impressive young forward Juliano Pacheco but another Clecio penalty set us at 3-1 with just 12 minutes remaining. I thought we would hold out for the win but as usual we gave it away, Mineiro and Vinicius punishing us late on and we had to make do with a 3-3 draw, but not a bad performance against the league leaders was something to take heart from.

We signed off for September with two games against the two giants of Gaucho state. Rafael Sobis caused a fair few problems in the defence but neither us or Internacional could find a goal and the game ended a boring 0-0. The next game against Gremio was probably our best performance of the season so far. Former Real Madrid and Brazil left back Roberto Carlos had just filled the vacant manager's post at the club and this would be his first game, but with an injury hit squad it was a young looking side that was put to the sword by our attack. We were helped by an early own goal from Paulo to put us 1-0 up and somewhat bizarrely another Clecio penalty made it 2-0. Talented striker Fernando Genro couldn't conjure up a reply and late on the match was sealed by two fine goals from Pablo Correa, a 4-0 demolition the perfect way to round off a month.

100th post \o/

October/November/December 2010

With the season entering it's final stage thankfully relegation was at the back of our minds as we continued to try and maintain and hopefully improve our lower mid table position. However our chances of a respectable mid table finish were dealt a huge amount of damage as we opened October with two narrow defeats. The first of which was down to a very dubious penalty decision at the Parque Antartica against Palmeiras. I honestly felt that it wasn't a penalty but against my opinion the penalty was given and Jonathan duly stuck it in the back of the net. Despite dominating the rest of the game in search for an equaliser we went down to the narrowest of defeats. We could have no complaints about our next defeat as we were outplayed by the champions Corinthians who exacted their revenge on us, that said there was again only one goal in it. It was a well worked team goal by Corinthians and our defence was punished for taking too high a line. In the end it was the 17 year old youngster Santos that completed the move and I have to say what a great young prospect he looks, just one part of Corinthians impressive youth setup.

The next game was one we were expected to win against soon to be relegated Ponte Preta, but the Sao Paulo side were desperately trying to cling onto survival and former Feyernoord winger Gerson Magrao's goal gave them the lead. In the end it took a late Diego Morais equaliser to salvage a point as we continued to slide down the table. At last we got what was in my eyes a positive result although it was not the full three points. At home to Santos was a daunting prospect especially after we had humiliated them in the previous game in their own backyard. They looked impressive as Samuel opened the scoring for 1-0 but once again they were easily overpowered at the back and Wellington and Juliano exploited this to give us a 2-1 lead. Defensive frailties were not exclusive to the Santos team as we foolishly let Carlinhos in for the equaliser to make it 2-2. A fantastic 30 yard drive from Joao Paulo gave us the lead again but late on Carlinhos completed a brace and rescued a point to end a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Next up unfortunately we were dealt a thrashing by Atletico Paranaense, Fagner Galvao's tap in after a Gimenez's penalty was saved the only consolation in a 4-1 defeat. Cleiton Xavier, Mozart and Schumacher on target for Paranaense who were looking to pip Fluminense to the title, also Corinthians were coming on the scene but it may be too little too late for the reigning champions. After that humiliating defeat came a wonderful victory. Sport Recife had really shown us up in the last meeting between us and the players didn't need me to remind them of that and they duly responded. Two Juliano free kicks were unfortunately cancelled out by Giuseppe and Gustavo as we entered the break level at 2-2. In the second half however we showed why we were in the division. A brace from Wellington and another trademark hit from Joao Paulo gave us a memorable 5-2 win.

Next was another game that we should have won against relegation certainties Parana. Despite mathematically in with a shout of survival it was beginning to look impossible for Parana and we showed their frailties up in the first half as Wellington and Pablo Correa grounded out a 2-0 lead. But once again we let it slip and two late goals from Paulinho Macaiba and promising winger Moises rescued a point for Parana. Moises is definately a player we will be looking out for in the future should he wish to return to the First Division.

That game was followed sadly by another defeat this time to São Paulo, but it was an exciting game to watch. São Paulo took the lead through Roger but were soon pegged back as Wellington scored the equaliser. São Paulo were to increase their lead before half time as Roger got his second and Diego Tardelli got the first of what was to become a hat trick. Tardelli got his second not long after the break but two quick goals from Wellington and Whoshington made it 4-3 and set up an exciting finish at Morumbi. Despite our best efforts, Tardelli wrapped up the hat trick and a 5-3 win.

That defeat was sadly followed by another two losses, Fagner Galvao scoring as we went down to vitoria 3-1 and Wellington notching up another goal as we went battling down to a 2-1 defeat against Bahia. Our optimistic approach to the last three months was not becoming a reality and we slipped to 16th, our lowest position throughout the whole of the campaign.

But there was a final flourish as goals from Wellington, Whoshington and Juliano gave us an important 3-1 win against tough outfit São Caetano. This was followed by a 4-0 trouncing of Coritiba, goals coming from Clecio, Wellington and Whoshington. We had a little slip up against Botafogo and Juan Guillermo Pinzon scored a late equaliser as we had to settle for a 2-2 draw. We finished the season in perfect style with a win against Copa Libertadores champions Mineiro. A Wellington hat trick cancelling out goals from Ralfe and Andre. With that victory we ended up finishing in 15th place a great acheivement all round.

New Year Transfer Update 2011

Out

Paulo Cerqueira - São Paulo - £1,500,000

With the excellent perfomances from Barbosa last season, Paulo struggled to find a place in the team. Towards the end of the year, São Paulo came in with a bid that activated his minimum fee release clause and the switch was made on New Years Day.

Released Players

-Hevandro, now at River (Argentina)

-Manoel (Under 20), now at Comercial (PI)

-Renato, now at Roda JC (Holland)

-Ivanildo (Under 20)

-Silva (Under 20)

-Junior (Under 20), now at Estrela de Cachoeiro

In

Moises Pereira do Nascimento

"Moises" 18, ML - £1,500,000 - Parana

We moved very quickly to secure the signing of Moises after Parana's relegation. He had impressed us a great deal when he had played and scored against us last season. Expected to be back up for Juliano on the left wing.

Lucas Siqueira Rocha

"Lucas Rocha" 21, DC - £2,700,000 - Figueirense

Bought from Second Division local rivals Figueirense Lucas Rocha is our first real big money signing. A solid and talented centre back, he dropped out of the Cruzeiro Under 20's and joined Brasiliense where unfortunately he and his team were relegated. He then joined Figueirense and has been putting in solid performances ever since. An underrated defender that should do well with us.

Thanks a lot chesterfan, it's still as enjoyable to write as ever

On a cold December morning, Wolfgang received a message from the NPD. It detailed the location of the scheduled meeting and frankly Wolfgang was more than surprised by the message. He called Sam and within an hour his manager was entering his office, the season was now over and Sam looked disgruntled at being distracted from his holiday almost as though he had forgotten about the situation. As he entered Wolfgang's office, his chairman flung an envelope across his desk. Sam retrieved the letter from inside the envelope, before he read it he couldn't help noticing what looked like two airline tickets. Ignoring them and moving on to the letter, he read with as much surprise as Wolfgang had done. This didn't sound like the NPD they both knew.

We finally have arranged a time and place for our meeting, apologies we have not contacted you sooner but we wanted to sort out a few things to make your trip more enjoyable. We wish to extend an invitation to you, to visit our new club. We will lay on corporate hospitality and it will be the perfect place to resolve our differences. Our new club are a lot higher profile than a South American club such as yours. So please find enclosed to first class tickets from São Paulo to Munich. From there you will be driven to the stadium where you can enjoy the local derby that is due to take place and we can sort things out for good.

Sam looked up from the letter at Wolfgang, who looked fairly amused.

"We're going to Munich"

***

Upon arrival in Munich, they were picked up in a limousine and driven to the stadium. Sam was expecting some lower league side from the Munich suburbs but to his surprise they arrived at the Allianz Arena the home of Munich's two premier sides. As they arrived at the huge stadium they were greeted and directed to a corporate box, given champagne, cigars, anything they wanted. They were still sat enjoying the delights of corporate hospitality when the match between 1860 Munich and FC Bayern kicked off, still no-one from the NPD had met them. Finally around ten minutes into the match a rotundly built man entered, his two bodyguards waiting at the door. He could only be the Vice President who had invited them here, this so called Gunther. He shook both of their hands and sat down.

"Apologies for being late, I hope you are both well. Are you enjoying yourselves?"

"This is all very generous of you, so which of these clubs is yours then?" asked Wolfgang.

"We hold majority shares in 1860 Munich, somehow I don't think we have the resources to own a club such as FC Bayern"

"Where did the money come from?"

"We have been lucky to welcome some new party members with bottomless wallets, we hope the revenue from the club generates a huge election campaign from which we eill take control of the country, but of course you knew our aims all along."

Sam spoke for the first time.

"So, what do you want?"

"Honestly, to set your minds at rest. Helmut was an out of control leader, he got us bogged down in a power struggle with Heinrich in the middle of nowhere in Brazil, no offence. The recent attempts on your life, orders came from Helmut's cell not from myself. Now I'm in control, we are moving forward rather than backwards and we think its best that we end all this animoscity. As a gesture of good will we are offering to fund the stadium expansion for your club, but we ask that you consider something in return."

"What?"

"Come and manage 1860 Munich, you are obviously a telented manager and you don't want to spend all your career in Brazil"

"Thanks for the offer, but I really am happy at the club and I don't want to be associated with anyone from your organisation to be honest"

"That's fine, I will still contact you over the stadium expansion later on. Please enjoy the match and hospitality, I will leave you in peace"

With that he got up and left, Sam and Wolfgang drank the bar dry and began to plan the rest of the night in the Bavarian city, which invloved visits to all the major beer halls and clubs in town. FC Bayern romped to a 3-0 win, ironically all the scorers were Brazilian, Fred, Evandro Roncatto and Juan all scoring. As they walked out Wolfgang laughed.

"After that performance it looks as though they could do with a manager like you"

Santa Catarina State Round-Up 2011

After having a disappointing state campaign last season, we were out to win the tournament this season. It would be difficult though, the players were still tired from last season and we had Barbosa, Juliano, Juan Pinzon and Pablo Correa competing in the South American Under 20 Championships. We had a very easy opener against new boys Carlos Renaux, Wellington the pick of the scorers as he netted four. Fagner Galvao was also on the score sheet, as were Whoshington and Joao Paulo. Those goals plus an own goal from Fernando gave us a thumping 8-0 opening win. Next was a home match against Guarani de Palhoca, who had luckily escaped relegation last season. A Joilson own goal set us on our way but we couldn't seem to add to our lead after that. It took until Diego Carvalho's sending off for the floodgates to open and Wellington, Whoshington, Galvao, Joao Paulo and Matheus were all on target in a 9-0 win.

With Barbosa playing for Brazil Under 20’s and with us yet to find a replacement for the São Paulo bound Paulo Cerqueira we approached our next game with Criciuma without a first team keeper. Reserve keeper Ricardo was drafted in to replace Barbosa and with several injuries in addition to the players on international duty, confidence was low against a side that were renowned for punching above their weight. It was a humiliation in the end, two divisions separated us from Criciuma but despite this they pulled off a comfortable 3-0 win. Gugu, Sandro and a penalty from Adriano Sella firing Criciuma to top of the group, Avai also winning left us in third and with work to do.

Whoshington scored the only goal in a 1-0 win against Marcilio Dias, a game that the home fans were expecting a landslide win. They were left frustrated as our build up to the season continued on a sour note, also the goalkeeper problem remained. It wouldn’t get much better for us as we slipped to a 1-0 defeat in our next match against Avai, Marquinhos netting in another unexpected victory.

News that our youngsters had completed their international duty and were back to face Carlos Renaux. Pablo Correa had picked up a winners medal with Argentina but had also picked up an injury that would sideline him until the start of the league season. A full strength team hit Carlos Renaux for seven, Wellington, Whoshington, Para and two great free kicks from Juliano completing the demolition.

Revenge was had against Criciuma but it wasn’t entirely convincing as goals from Juliano and Fagner Galvao wrapped up a 2-0 win and put us back in a qualification position. This was followed by a 3-0 win against Marcilio Dias and a magnificent hat trick from Juliano, two of the goals from free kicks. Unfortunately he picked up an injury and Moises deputised for him in the next match against minnows Guarani de Palhoca, unbelievably we were held to a 2-2 draw. Moises and Whoshington both had their goals cancelled out as Guarani de Palhoca fought to avoid relegation.

We finished the group stage with a 4-2 win at home to Avai., who took the lead before Whoshington and Wellington swung the advantage our way. Avai equalised but Colombian winger Juan Guillermo Pinzon netted twice to seal the points and passage to the Semi’s as we somewhat frustratingly came runners up in the group

Semi Final Draw

Hermann Aichinger vs. Figueirense

Joinville vs. Criciuma

Our third successive Semi Final and in honesty it was more of a shambles than last year. Figueirense had a point to prove and with our huge catalogue of injuries they ripped us apart in the first leg. At one point it was 1-1 after Whoshington had equalised Figueirense early opener. Para then was sent off and from there we were demolished as Figueirense cruised to a 4-1 win, Ze Carlos, William and former CAHA old boy Adriano poignantly sealing the win.

We needed to respond in the return leg but in all honesty the upcoming league season was on everyones minds as a despondant display saw us crumble and lose 2-0, 6-1 on aggregate. Hopefully our form would improve in the league season, it seemed to me that the players just couldn't be bothered with this competetion.

Final

Criciuma beat Figueirense on penalties after a goal-less second leg.

Such a humiliating failure in a competetion they should have easily won, was very hard for the Hermann Aichinger faithful to accept and there was a lot of bad feeling around the club. Sam had just celebrated an amazing 6 years at the club, which had to be some kind of record around these parts. The disappointment from the state championship was soon forgotten when the fans remembered that their English manager had taken them from the depths and established them in the top flight of Brazilian football. Competing on the South American stage was the next step and Sam knew it would not be long until CAHA would be making their debut appearance in tournaments like the Copa Libertadores.

The fans would have something extra to cheer about as the long planned stadium expansion went into action and architects were sent over from Bavaria to plan the whole thing. Construction started soon after the state championship had ended. Sam turned up to pay a visit to the site as part of a media piece for the club website. He was given a flourescent builders jacket and a rather comical looking bright red hard hat with the club's logo emblazoned on the front. Wolfgang was already there overseeing the construction, there certainly was a lot to oversee. Sam had never seen a workforce this big.

"This is all a bit much isn't it?" he asked, motioning towards the multitude of workers scurrying around the site.

"All hands on deck, we want this finished by September"

"So what exactly are they doing?"

"Well, first they are modernising the existing part. New seating, accessibilty and all those kind of things. Then each stand is getting a new tier, each seating 3,750. So by the end of it we will have a modern 18,000 all seater stadium. They are saying early September for completion, do you know what home game we have for that sort of time"

"I'm not sure but I think it may be São Paulo, that should be a barrel of laughs, opening the stadium to the side that seems to be the only one to thrash us for fun on a regular basis."

"Anyway I'll catch up with you later, you better do that thing for the website"

Sam made his way over to where he was to have his picture taken. The website had insisted that two players accompany him in the photo, begrudgingly Sam managed to drag Juliano and Pablo Correa, two of the more popular players off the training pitch for the publicity shot. They took the picture and one of the photographers insisted that Pablo should climb up one of the scaffolds having his picture taken with a better view of the construction site in the backdrop. The little Argentinian was more than happy to have yet another picture of him in the website, but the scaffold was fairly treacherous and Sam was less than enthusiastic as he lambasted the photographer.

"No way, if he breaks leg, you'll find yourself up a certain creek without a paddle!"

May 2011

The start of the new season saw us entertain newly promoted Portuguesa at home. I had been surprised that Portuguesa had finished runners up to Vasco, they had always been a good side but one that regularly under-acheived. Losing their star player Celsinho to Belgian side Club Brugge was a huge blow but they certainly responded well and gained promotion fairly comfortably. Barbosa, Pinzon and Correa were still on international duty and we were forced to bring in Guarani keeper Caio on an emergency loan signing. We started well as Wellington reached a huge landmark on the half hour, his 100th league goal for the club coming impressively at the start of only his 4th season at the club. It was after that that things started to go a bit wrong for us, Portuguesa started to play well and soon equalised through right back Schneider. We didn't panic but maybe we should have done as in the second half, Portuguesa took a shock lead. Ricardo Costa heading home for 2-1. We had become accustomed to come-backs on home soil and today was no different, Wellington restored the scoreline to 2-2 and it looked as though we would have to settle for a draw until Clecio headed in from a corner in stoppage time. 3-2 and an opening day win.

Unfortunately we then had to take our understrength side to face São Paulo side that were currently odds on to de-throne Corinthians as champions. Their front-line was frankly more than intimidating and we shown the extent of their ability as Roger netted a sublime hat-trick. That combined with a goal from Tardelli and one from former Shakhtar and Internacional forward Fernandinho completed a 5-0 win for São Paulo. It was the first real thrashing we had received and it was destructive to team morale.

We found in our next game that the best remedy after being hit for five was to go and score five yourself. Coritiba found out the hard way as they were on the receiving end of a Whoshington hat-trick plus one each from Joao Paulo and Wellington. To their credit they managed to grab two consolation goals through Michael and Francismar but it was our day as we won 5-2.

Next came Atletico Paranaense who had narrowly missed out on the title last season as both they and Fluminense were burgled by Corinthians. All the goals came in the last 10 minutes as we were reduced to 10 men and were trying to slavage something from the game. A penalty apiece set up a nervous finish as both sides looked for a winner. On this occasion it was to be Paranaense's day as Rodriguinho netted the winner as the game ended 2-1.

Pablo Correa made his return from an injury picked up playing for Agentina Under 20's and scored a fantastic goal against São Caetano. it wasn't enough to win the game as a long range drive from Schmoller shared the points, ending it 1-1. Two wins, two losses and a draw was a solid enough start to the game. Little did we know that over the course of the season it would get a lot better.

June 2011

It had been a fairly solid start to the season, but I was eager to see more from a team that I knew could compete among the best in this league. Their potential was largely ignored by the media and even after a great 15th place finish in our first season, plus some of the most talented youngsters, our chances of surviving another season were not rated highly. It was ludicrous when I knew this team could be pushing for continental competition places. We started June with a visit to Atletico Mineiro, our games with the Belo Horizonte side always were lively and this one was no exception. Mineiro were a dangerous side and with the combined strike force of Rafael Lopes and the promising young forward Marco Aurelio we would have to be defensively on top of our game to get anything out of it. It was us that took the lead, in form striker and fan hero Wellington splitting the Mineiro defence apart and bagging a great goal. We were unable to enjoy the 1-0 lead for long as Mineiro hit back on the counter attack and Marco Aurelio headed in an equaliser. It rapidly started to go downhill for us as Rafael Lopes netted a brace in the space of ten minutes and all of a sudden we were 3-1 down. Just before the break Lucas Rocha scored his first goal for the club and he volleyed direct from a Juliano corner to pull it back to 3-2. It was an inspired fight back from the team in the second half as not long into it, Wellington managed to grab an equaliser. The momentum was now with us as Wellington went on to put us into the lead, completing a hat trick with what would prove to be the winning goal. We won 4-3 in the end.

Next up were Flamengo, who were looking very good so far this season. That said, we still managed to continue our good form against the Rio side. A fairly comfortable display with two goals from Whoshington and one from João Paulo set up a 3-0 lead. Bruno Mezenga grabbed a late consolation but we cruised to a 3-1 victory. Our final game of June was against Gremio. There was only one goal in it, a well taken penalty by Juan Guillermo Pinzon who just this week has been attracting attention from both Marseille and Lyon. Three wins from three a great result for us as we climbed to 4th in the table.

Somewhere in Eastern Russia............

The sun began to rise over a lonely and desolate village in one of the most remote parts of Russia. The warm rays enveloped the tiny settlement, penetrating the heavy clouds that had hung ominously over the turbulent night. The villagers were mostly agricultural workers yet on this fine morning, a stranger was in their midst. He was a tall and powerful looking man, most probably ex-armed forces. He strode along the small lane, attracting the gazes of the locals. He was clearly a man of immense wealth, a crisp designer suit, expensive jewellry all betrayed his obvious affluence. He made his way deep into the tiny village and walked towards a small building that was not unlike its neighbouring structures, small and shabby yet fairly cheerful and cosy. He unlocked the front door and went inside, moving into the main room of the building he found two men waiting for him. They both glared at him with an expectant look in their eyes. The newcomer removed his jacket, sat himself down and proceeded to light an expensive looking Cuban cigar. He finally broke silence.

"Comrades, we have a mark"

One of the men sat at the table immediately showed his eagerness.

"Who is it and when do we leave?"

"Patience Nikolai, this order comes from the top. Bigger than anything we have done before and a bigger paycheck at the end of it. Despite the client's undoubted importance, the mark or should I say marks are fairly low profile this should be an easy hit. We should be able to complete the job with just the three of us."

"So there is more than one target, Vladimir?"

The other man asked.

"That is correct Sergey, tomorrow we leave for São Paulo and from there we travel to a region called Santa Catarina, apparantly this is were the targets are. Over the next few weeks we will begin observations, but we will strike when the time is right and when we get the order. This could take time."

Sergey laughed.

"Sun, sea, sand and women. This reminds me of our time in Cuba"

"Need I be reminded of your lucky posting? While you were sunning yourself in Cuba, I was in a foxhole in Chechnya with the Spetsnaz. Plus I hear this part of the country can get pretty cold, so don't get too excited".

Vladimir proceed to pour three small shots of the local Vodka into three shot glasses. He offered them to Sergey and Nikolai, preparing to make a toast.

"So we are to go into battle once more brothers. To Brazil!"

They raised their glasses and gulped down the fiery spirit.

July 2011

After a perfect month with three wins from three games, the team were understandably on cloud nine. A visit from an in form Santos side was ideal if we were to continue our rich vain of form. It seemed to be geared up that way, as after a half hour of dominance we were given a penalty as Peruvian defender Eduardo Uribe brought Whoshington down in the box. Whoshington picked himself up to net the opening goal of the game. However just four minutes later Santos were level. Former Cruzeiro striker and with 5 international caps to his name, Jonathas blasted home the equaliser. Boasting a healthy scoring record since his £7,000,000 move to Santos in 2009, he continued to turn a few heads and the press were raising the inevitable question of a European move for the 23 year old. He was a fine player but the only real star in a Santos team that was on the slide to mid table obscurity these days. That said Santos performed very well in the second half and went close a few times. Both teams were looking for the winner, and it was us that looked most likely to get it. But football is a cruel game at the best of times, and it was Santos that stole three points. Carlinhos needed a second attempt to get the ball past Barbosa but he eventually scored after the ball bobbed around the 6 yard box. A cruel defeat but the perfomance was encouraging enough.

We picked ourselves up from defeat in style against Palmeiras a we made a mockery of the high flying side. It started out a fairly tight game and João Paulo’s well taken effort remained the only goal of the first half. The definite turning point in the match was the sending off of Palmeiras central defender Mauricio, the 20 year old showing his lack of experience. Huge gaps of space started to appear in the Palmeiras defence and we were able to exploit it. Pablo Correa eventually doubled the lead after an hour had been played. Five minutes later Maycon increased the score to 3-0. A comfortable win was eventually sealed by a last minute penalty from youngster Jorge Gimenez. In all honesty we would have had no problems had the teams been even.

Such emphatic wins were usually followed by disappointing performances and that was true of our next match against Botafogo. Somewhat of a bogey side for us, the Rio side profited from an uninspiring display from our team and promptly went 2-0 up within first hour of play. Danilo and a Ze Roberto penalty putting the home side in control. Juliano bagged a trademark free kick to get it back to 2-1. However Botafogo soon increased their lead through Felipe Adão. It was a game played in not the best of spirits, each side having a player sent off, Para for us and Bruno Octavio for the home side. A demoralising 3-1 defeat for us.

We were to bounce back against Sport Recife, who were currently rooted to the bottom of the league. It was not a great day for Sport as not only was Giuseppe sent off but Carlão missed two crucial penalties. The game’s scoring was wrapped up in the first ten minutes as João Paulo and Whoshington were on target as we won 2-0. It could have been disastrous had Barbosa not pulled off two fine penalty saves.

Note: The content of this update is loosely based on an article from today's issue of a well known newspaper that I stumbled across. I couldn't believe my eyes when I read it, it is so startlingly relevant to not only the plot of my story itself but also it fits in perfectly with the future storyline. The "NPD" were intended as a fictional political party, I only chose that name as it seemed logical given my fairly decent grasp of the German language. Little did I know that they actually exist and especially with some of the imagery in the article, they are quite similar as to how I have described them. Purely co-incidental I assure you!

As the three mercenaries boarded their flight to Brazil, the question of their employers was raised and finally it appeared as though Vladimir was willing to relinquish some information. Sergey was particularly keen to know who was behind this odd mission.

"Vladimir, do we get to know who we are working for yet?

Without speaking Vladimir handed him a crumpled newspaper that was in English, yet Sergey had no trouble understanding it. It was open somewhere near the middle, amongst the dull stories that it was unlikely anyone cared about. But Sergey was immediately interested when he began to read the article. He called Nikolai over and the both began to read.

Germany's far right set for poll gains

Germany's far-right is set to increase its power base in state elections this weekend, securing a historic foothold in a regional parliament for the third time in two years.

The leading candidates for the National Democratic Party (NPD), Germany's oldest neo-Nazi party, have swapped their skinheads and combat boots for smart suits and gelled hair, in their attempt to attract a wider vote by shedding their thug-like image.

In the north-eastern state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which votes along with Berlin on Sunday, the NPD is expected to gain between seven and 10 per cent of the vote, overcoming the necessary five per cent hurdle to enter local parliament for the first time. According to political analysts, the success of the NPD is in part due to its belief in the division of labour: behind the smart suits of the NPD are groups of lowlier neo-Nazi activists, the less socially-acceptable face of the far-right.

According to widespread reports from the police and mainstream parties, they have attacked other activists putting up posters or trying to take down NPD posters, and stormed their political opponents' rallies, making verbal and physical threats.

Recently, several key NPD members have been involved in the highly public takeover of Bavarian football side 1860 Munich. Whilst the members deny any political implications of this, it is belived that it is funding their sleek new political campaign. Last year there were also reports of investment in Brazil although an NPD spokesman confirmed that the investment had been "withdrawn".

It has also been a turbulent time over the last year as another key member was brutally murdered and the former party leader currently serving life in a Munich prison, this highlights the corruption amongst the party. But under new leadership, the NPD have promised to pursue their goals diplomatically rather than forcefully. However given recent reports, the "methods" of the party look unlikely to change.

Nikolai looked disgusted.

"We are working for the fascists?"

"Money is money my friend"

Thousands of miles away Sam was sat reading the exact same article and he read it was the same uneasiness that the men sent to kill him had. He always had the English papers delievered to him to keep track of what was going on back home and he had literally stumbled across this story. The NPD were clearly growing in strength and support, but for the time being it remained almost impossible for them to gain any real support. Himself and Wolfgang had been wined and dined and made to feel like old friends by the new man in charge, but he still did not trust them. A familiar feeling began to creep up on him, he began to fear as though more deadly trouble was heading his way. And things were going so well.......

August 2011

Our good run of form up to this point saw us still competing near the top of the table. The media were questioning exactly when our run would come to an end, but our performances in August would still leave them wondering as we approached the half way point of the season. Our first game was a tough trip to Vitoria, a team that were also enjoying their "suprise package" status. Unfortunately we got off to a pretty dreadful start and after a few minutes we were behind due to a goal from Chrystiano. As ever we never let our heads drop and were soon back on level terms. I am constantly reminded of the fact that we posess two central midfielders that are exceptionally gifted at shooting from range and it the more experienced of the pair, Fagner Galvão that netted a sweet strike from 25 yards for the equaliser. Despite a renewed vigour about the side, we were unable to create any more chances that would yield a goal and in the end we settled for a valuable point.

Another week, another big game and curiously enough another one in which all the goals came in the first half. The visit of Vasco was eagerly anticipated and it did not disappoint its TV coverage status. An action packed first ten minutes saw us 2-1 down, Anderson had breached our defence within the first minute. Wellington had equalised with barely five minutes on the clock, only to see Anderson grab his second in the ninth minute. Coming from behind was beginning to be something we were accustomed to, this time a penalty yielding the equaliser, Para converting for 2-2. Despite the action packed first half, the second 45 minutes was almost a totally different spectacle. Both sides failed to create anything, and we settled for another draw.

The win we so desperately craved finally came away to Bahia, though at one point it seemed we were heading for another draw. Some excellent work from Whoshington had resulted in a brace for the young striker and at 2-0 we seemed to be cruising. But the home side mounted a second half comeback, first Barrocal scoring and then with barely ten minutes remaining Fabio Bala made it 2-2. However we finally grabbed the three points through a magnificent solo effort from Wellington. We have had no problem scoring goals so far, it is the defensive perfomances that leave a lot to be desired.

Next up was Cruzeiro, a team that had undergone massive changes this season. They had spent a staggering £16,500,000 this season, the most notable newcomer, Brazil Under 20 and São Paulo star João Pedro for the grand sum of £9,000,000. At the start of the season I had failed to see past Cruzeiro with regards to title challengers, given the strength of their squad but it hadn't really happened for them so far. They put in a poor perfomance here, former Raposa man Whoshington giving us an early lead which we held until two minutes from time. João Pedro was on hand to rescue an undeserved point for Cruzeiro.

Corinthians were aiming for a 3rd successive title, yet many pundits were still scratching their heads as to how they stole the title from under Fluminense and Paranaense's noses last season. This year they had a new look, youthful side, that was led by hard man veteran Javier Mascherano. Yet this season appeared to be one of re-building and Alan Hansen's famous line "you can't win anything with kids" looked at last to be accurate. I recognised some of their players as previous transfer targets of ours including Diego Rossello, who at the age of just 19 had cemented his place as Uruguay's first choice left back. However it was a Timão old boy that stole the show, Wellington grabbing the only goal of the game in a priceless away win.

However we struggled in our next game at Fluminense. Somehow we managed to battle from 2-0 down with 10 men and rescue a point. Wellington and Pablo Correa on target to preserve our now month old unbeaten record.

We reached the half way point of the season in emphatic style, young right winger Juan Guillermo Pinzon playing an absolute blinder against Internacional. First he scored a wonder goal after cutting inside and beating two members of the static Inter defence. Then he found Wellington with an inch perfect cross, from which the striker headed home for 2-0. A comfortable afternoon was rounded off by a penalty which was converted by young right back Jorge Gimenez. Half way through the season and 3rd place in the table. Dare we dream of a title challenge?

CAHA stadium expansion completed ahead of crucial São Paulo match

2nd September 2011

http://www.atleticoha.com.br/

Today marks the latest chapter in the amazing story of Atletico Hermann Aichinger's emergence from obscurity. The board of directors have put their hard earned money into expanding and modernising the Estadio da Baixada. Until now the ground had been the smallest in the First Division with a modest capacity of 3,000. Now the stadium boasts an 18,000 capacity, with seating being available in almost all of the ground. It is still by no means the largest or impressive stadium in the Brazilian League, but it is a statement of intent from the Santa Catarina side as to their future plans. Club director Genesio Ayres Marchetti has not ruled out further expansion over the coming years and in fact has all but confirmed additional development plans, which he claims will be put in motion "Over the course of the next few seasons"

Manager Sam Cox was unavailable for comment as he prepares his side for the trip to Portuguesa on Sunday. But we were able to speak to Under 20's coach and former Lyon and Brazil midfielder, Juninho Pernambucano about CAHA's form this season. In an exclusive interview he revealed that the club's form so far this season may have surprised many pundits, but in the Hermann Aichinger camp their feet are firmly on the ground.

"Everyone at the club is calm and relaxed, that is not to say we are becoming complacent, we just knew we were capable of perfoming in the way we have been doing. It irritates all of us, especially the players when certain newspapers show such bewilderment at us being 3rd in the league. In my opinion we have one of the best squads in Brazil, so why shouldn't we be aiming high?"

He went on to say:

"The match against São Paulo is huge, it certainly will be the biggest game of our season not only because it is a top of the tabel clash but also because it will be the first game to be played in the newly expanded stadium. We will have to count on the extra amount of fans to get behind us. We are well aware that São Paulo are the favourites to win the title and losing 5-0 to them so early in the season was hard for us, but we will certainly look to avenge that defeat."

September 2011

Before the hugely anticipated match against São Paulo, we first had to travel to one of their local rivals, Portuguesa. The São Paulo side were not having a great season, and at the half way point they were rooted at the bottom of the table. Despite their league position they played fairly well. It was us that found the break-through though, Wellington netting just before half time. But Portuguesa hit back barely five minutes into the second half, Fabricio heading home from a corner. We tried in vain to look for the winner, it just never came and we had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Finally it was time for the big one against São Paulo, attendance was reported at 15,727, not bad at all. Victory would see us jump up to 1st place in the league as Corinthians had now been beaten in their last two games, plus São Paulo had come into this on the back of two draws. Although we had incentive enough to win the game. The crowd were fantastic and there was finally a real atmosphere about the place, most fans expected São Paulo to trample all over us but nonetheless they showed their support and it was very much appreciated. It was a dream start for us as Pablo Correa found a way through the defence and emphatically smashed the ball home after just ten minutes. São Paulo pressurised right the way through the match but were unable to come up with the goods. In the second half Fagner Gãlvao doubled the lead totally against the run of play with a trademark drive. That was the way it stayed, the huge crowd treated to a 2-0 win against the league leaders. That put us top after 22 games, you couldn’t deny we were well in the title race, elsewhere Corinthians lost again and it was looking more and more like a two horse race between us and São Paulo.

Next up was Coritiba, always an eventful fixture and that was the case again. It was a high tempo and aggressive game with both teams reduced to 10 men, Junior for Coritiba and Maycon from our team both receiving red cards within the first half hour. Despite that we raced into a 2-0 lead. A rare start for Diego Morais was rewarded with a goal from the striker, who was playing wide right as Pinzon and Ale were both injured. Another goal from Wellington saw us take a comfortable 2-0 lead. However in the second half Coritiba fought back and two quick fire goals from Quirino made it 2-2. Pablo Correa restored the lead a few minutes later, but Quirino sealed a hat trick from the penalty spot to make it 3-3. Pablo Correa was the hero of the hour as he got his second and the winner in stoppage time, the game ending 4-3. That victory saw us stay in 1st place, but how long could it last?

Despite Atletico Paranaense never having achieved great league success, it was always one of the toughest games. The reigning Copa Libertadores champions boasted a talented squad and it would be difficult when they visited the Baixada. They took the lead early on through prodigious talent Juliano Pacheco, but we immediately pegged them back from the penalty spot, 19 year old right back Jorge Gimenez blasting the spot kick home for 1-1. Whoshington gave us the lead a few minutes later and it looked as though we were heading for our third straight win. But late on Netinho grabbed an equaliser and the game ended 2-2. We retained first place in the league but São Paulo were just one point behind.

Finally we played an out of sorts São Caetano side who were finding themselves in a relegation battle. All the goals came in the first half, Whoshington giving us the lead before Paulo Ramos equalised for the home team. João Paulo scored a wonder goal that turned out to be the winner, 2-1 the final score. With a little over two months of football to go we were still top and the subject of a title win was beginning to creep into the back of the minds of players, staff and fans.

Ibirama, the home town of Hermann Aichinger was small and generally quiet. However on this particular day the town centre was bustling and noisy. The town locals were busy milling around and going about their business. On this particular day a local celebrity was in their midst. Sam was enjoying a quiet drink in one of the local pubs, however much he protested he was never allowed to buy a drink in what had become his regular place to relax after a tough day's work at the Baixada. He liked to be amongst the fans even if they had criticisms of his work, which due to the ferocity of the support for football in Brazil, there was always someone that had a bone to pick with him. He felt it neccesary to have a good relationship with the fans and be seen to be conscious of their worries, not that the team's current performances were cause for concern. Upon seeing that there was a large queue to buy him drinks, he felt he better retreat as at this rate he would surely become intoxicated and with a gruelling training session planned for early next morning, a hangover was the last thing he needed. He drained the last of his beer and thanked Pepe, the cheerful barman and made an exit. A few autograph signing delayed his retreat but he was all too happy to sign them.

Across the street, on a top floor balcony, Vladimir observed his target through a pair of binoculars. He touched his ear piece and radioed Sergey.

"Target is leaving the bar, place the tracker"

"Da"

Vladimir glanced at his wristwatch, he wondered where on earth Nikolai was. He was supposed to be obtaining the weapons and he was at least two hours late. He hadn't taken to the mission very well, as he was wary of his employers. Unlike Sergey, Vladimir had never served with Nikolai before. He had been a KGB operative during the Cold War, undercover in the States. Like many of his kind he was forced to enter into a world of merecenary black bag operations since the fall of the wall. He was a quiet and sombre man but was clearly cold and calculated and he had impressed Vladimir at first. But now his suspicions were beginning to mount.

***

Down at street level Sergey glided towards his target. Walking at a quick pace he deliberately moved into the path of the target and shoved into him. The target regained his balance and began to apolgise in Portuguese.

"So sorry, didn't see you at all"

Sergey responded in a flawless American accent.

"Didn't understand a goddamn word of that, but that was my fault, are you OK?"

Sam was relieved to hear someone else apart from Wolfgang speaking English for once.

"That's quite alright mate, I think I need to lay off the beer!"

"Ha! Hang on a sec, aren't you that soccer coach guy? I'm a big fan."

"Yeah that's me although I'd call myself a football manager, "soccer" isn't in my vocabulary I'm afraid, I didn't realise we had a fan-base in the States"

"Yeah well I'm a die hard socc...I mean football fan, I came to see the game tomorrow. I'm probably one of very few that follows the Brazilian game back home though."

"Well enjoy the game, I'd like to promise you a win but if I could do that I'd be on a lot better pay than I am now. Nice to meet you."

They shook hands, as they did Sergey transferred an ultra thin and practically invisible sensor that stuck to the surface of the skin onto Sam's palm. They both walked away and Sergey then radioed back to Vladimir.

"Done"

Vladimir observed the screen of his laptop, a red dot began blipping on a map of the town.

October 2011

Sitting top of the table with 14 games left to play was a position no-one at the club could have predicted, and that taking nothing away from the players and staff's level of confidence. We had to keep up our impressive record to fend off São Paulo for as long as we could, us it now boiled down to a direct title race between the two of us. We started in emphatic style grabbing a priceless away win against Flamengo. The Rio side were directly alongside Corinthians and Internacional in the pack desperately trying to close down the top two. Midfield dynamo João Paulo put in another superb performance and his efforts led to the opening goal, another long range blast from the ex-Cruzeiro player. After the break Whoshington added to the lead with a well placed shot. Diego Morais who was enjoying a short spell in the team, got the third. This will surely be Diego's last season with us, his destination Europe to play for Austrian side Pasching, a deal is due to be negotiated at the end of the year. A comprehensive 3-0 win for us and it consolidated our grip on first place.

Our next match had pretty much everything, plenty of goals and no less than three red cards. Atletico Mineiro visited us needing three points to at least try and salvage something from their disappointing season so far, mid table obscurity beckoned for them. After just 4 minutes we were reduced to 10 men after Lucas Rocha comitted a proffesional foul. A huge blow but it turned out that we would take the lead through Pablo Correa, the teenage sensation beginning to turn a few heads. Then it was the turn of a Mineiro player to see red. Brazilian international Arouca made a rash challenge and was immediately sent off for serious foul play. It evened up the teams, yet just ten minutes later Mineiro were level, Rafael Lopes capitalising on slack defending to slide it past Barbosa for 1-1. Then the odds were tipped firmly in our favour as young right back Everson was sent off for violent conduct. The Mineiro response to losing a man seemed to involve sticking the ball in the back of the net which they did, once again through Rafael Lopes. That sent us in at the break 2-1 down. Yet the huge pockets of space meant that it was a foregone conclusion that we would equalise. It came through João Paulo as he netted a superb low driven shot from outside the box. 2-2 and we were back in control. Pablo Correa soon gave us the lead with his second of the game, before Wellington killed off the game and we had won 4-2.

Gremio had gone through more managers than I had ever conceived was possible. From the time my career at Hermann Aichinger began to the present day, they had gone through seven different managers! Marco Aurelio was the latest to pit the Gremio side against us and he was the latest to get beaten by us. A brace from Wellington plus a wonder strike from Moises cancelled out two goals from Tacio in a narrow 3-2 win.

The games kept on coming and Palmeiras were highly fancied to end our winning streak. For a while it looked as though it would be a close game as a goal apiece made it 1-1 early on, Wellington netting for us only to see Claudio equalise. But then it all went very wrong for Palmeiras. First para converted a penalty to make it 2-1 at half time. Then in the second half, another goal from Wellington plus efforts from Correa and Moises wrapped up a 5-1 demolition, an amazing five straight wins.

It was beginning to get a little surreal as we then made it a sixth straight win against Botafogo. Yet another strike from in form João Paulo had given us an early lead. However Felipe Adão equalised just before the break and it looked to have been heading for a draw until Wellington popped up in stoppage time to score the winner in a deserved 2-1 victory.

We were bound to receive our come-uppance sooner or later, and we certainly did against Santos. Our record against them was good and maybve it was that fact that spurred them on against us. Chilean, Ivan Vasquez gave them the lead early on and it was soon doubled as Wendell scored from the penalty spot. After the break Samuel increased the lead to 3-0. However not long after Wellington scored what would turn out to be no more than a consolation goal. Jonathas sealed an emphatic 4-1 win for the home side as we suffered our first heavy defeat in a while. Despite that result we still topped the league by two points going into the final 8 games.

Winter was now in full swing and the Brazilian league was drawing to a climax, with just 8 games remaining it was a straight fight between Hermann Aichinger and São Paulo. Despite the Santa Catarina side having the advantage at this stage, leading pundits failed to see past São Paulo as the next champions of Brazil.

Meanwhile the three hired assasins were still patiently carrying out the reconaissance of their targets. None of them were bored with their long assignment in Brazil, the incentive of a nice, large cheque was enough to keep them going throughout the many months they had already spent in Brazil. It had been part of their mission, to carry out the painstaking research of their targets. That way they could complete the perfect kill at the perfect time, no-one would ever know who had either ordered or carried out the hit. Even if the NPD were accused, there would be no evidence to incriminate any of their members. And as for the Russians, they would be long gone before the authorities even began their investigation. It appeared a fool-proof operation, but of course appearances can be deceiving.

Vladimir's suspicion of Nikolai had failed to recede over the past month. At first it seemed as though he had a renewed enthusiasm for the mission but now he was nowhere to be found again. In fact, unbeknown to either Vladimir or Sergey, Nikolai was in São Paulo. His name wasn't Nikolai either. His name was Alexandyr Filiminov and as a small child he had been evacuated to Britain from Chechnya. He was an extremely bright child and eventually graduated from Oxford university. Because of his knowledge of Russian and because of the situation Britain faced with the Cold War he was recruited into the British security services and from there he became an MI6 operative infiltrating the Iron Curtain and providing valuable information for the British government. All that had ended 20 years ago and since then a desk job at the Ministry of Defence had been the closest he had come to action. But now there was a new threat and he relished the chance to get back into the field, although he was certain this would be his last mission as he was to turn 40 in the new year. He walked down a side alley on one of São Paulo's busy streets and up to a side-door on one of the large buildings. He punched in a security code and the door unlocked itself, allowing him to enter.

Inside was a large room, sparsely decorated and furnished. In the corner a young woman, also an MI6 operative was sat at a computer. He walked towards her and placed a blank CD on her desk.

"Proof of the NPD's involvement, don't lose that, it could stop World War Three. Hopefully pictures of them ordering the deaths of innocent people will be on the front cover of every newspaper in the world soon. That should finish them for good."

"Have you found out when the hit is to take place?"

"Yes, its quite elaborate actually. 11th December, at the home game against Corinthians, which is at night. Sniper on the roof and then a helicopter extraction. Thankfully I wasn't chosen to actually do it or we may have had a problem. I've been a bit sloppy, they may be suspicious but we should be fine"

"Just keep your cover until then, we'll do the rest."

November/December 2011

After the humiliating defeat against Santos, we had to bounce back straight away, especially with our lead at the top of the table reduced to just two points. We did just that against strugglers Sport Recife, a first half hat-trick from Wellington effectively sealing all three points within 45 minutes. Whoshington made it 4-0 not long after the restart, before Aloisio grabbed a late consolation for the visitors. A comfortable 4-1 win for us and now just seven games stood between us and the title.

Unfortunately we were to suffer a major set-back in our next game with a rare home defeat. Vitoria had been as much of a suprise package this season as we had been and they were very much in contention for a Copa Libertadores place. They came to the Baixada and just before the break took the lead through attacking midfielder William. They doubled their lead early in the second half through Chrystiano, much to the disgust of fans and staff alike. We managed to pull one back but it was far too little far too late as Wellington grabbed a goal in stoppage. That 2-1 defeat was costly as São Paulo had lost to Paranaense the day before and we missed the oppurtunity to extend our lead at the top.

São Paulo briefly went top after a victory against Coritiba, but we didn't waste our game in hand. We managed to thrash Cruzeiro 5-0 to restore our lead in the division. It was former Cruzeiro academy player Whoshington that got the scoring underway after around 20 minutes. Then came another Wellington hat-trick which came about in the space of about half an hour. The striker was having his best season yet with us and was well on his way to reaching 40 goals for the season. Substitute Maycon rounded off the scoring in the second half, finishing a comprehensive 5-0 win that kept our title dream very much alive.

Once more São Paulo re-took the lead in the table. Unfortunately this time we couldn't restore ourselves to the top of the league. Our game in hand was against Vasco, and to begin with it looked very promising as Whoshington gave us a 1-0 lead after just 4 minutes. However, Vasco took their time and slowly wore us down, by half time they had a 2-1 lead. That lead was made safe late on in the second half as Anderson sealed a 3-1 win and left us a point adrift of São Paulo.

This time it was us up first and we could settle for no less than a win against Bahia, a side that had caused us problems in the past. It was a gallant response from the players after losing the league leadership, as we outplayed Bahia convincingly. Whoshington and Galvão gave us a hard earned 2-0 lead before half time. Saulo scored for Bahia to give them a glimmer of hope, but Wellington and Ale sealed a comfortable 4-1 win. Back to the top of the table we went but for how long would we stay there?

Not long as yet again São Paulo won to re-take the lead. A disappointing 1-1 draw with Fluminense meant that we could only draw level with them in the table, and with a game in hand São Paulo were sure to extend their lead to three points. But much to everyones surprise they lost 2-0 to Gremio, Fernando Genro and Pedro Junior severely damaging the seemingly title bound São Paulo. That meant that with just two games remaining we were level on points. It really would be going down to the wire.

Or so we thought as we entered December. Our record against Internacional had been very good up to now, but the Porto Alegre side seemed to have an added fire for this game and they put us under pressure immediately. It wasn't long before the pressure told as Brazilian international Diego slid home for 1-0. Wellington managed to grab a great equaliser but unfortunately it was the beginning of the end for us as just minutes later Rafael Sobis restored the lead. News from São Paulo came in that Palmeiras were holding our title rivals at 2-2, so if we could have found an equaliser we would have avoided disaster. but football is a cruel game at the best of times. Colombian striker Danny Cano wrapped up a 3-1 win for Inter and as we staggered dejectedly off the pitch we learnt that São Paulo had grabbed a last minute winner against Palmeiras. That left us three points adrift with just one game remaining. We therefore needed to beat Corinthians by three clear goals and hope São Paulo lose their final game. The dream was still alive, just about anyway. We now had to prepare for the biggest game of our lives against Corinthians.

Hermann Aichinger vs. Corinthians

It was nearing kick off and for the first time in his career, was so nervous he wondered whether he could handle the pressure. He only needed to take inspiration from his players who was so fired up for the game, their collective energy and enthusiasm was contagious. The Baixada was at full capacity, 18,000 roaring fans, desperately clinging onto the title dream that still existed. In 90 minutes time there would either be huge disappointment or joyous celebrations. At the end of the day, it had been a great acheivement by the team and whatever the result, Hermann Aichinger fans would certainly be very proud of their team and what they had accomplished. Barbosa continued in goal, while Matheus was the only absentee in the back four. Clecio came in to replace him, joining Para, Lucas Rocha and Leonardo. Pinzon and Juliano were on the wings, while the tried and tested partnership of Fagner Galvão and João Paulo continued in the centre. Teenage sensation Pablo Correa was left on the bench while Whoshington and Wellington started up front. Wellington was two goals short of 40 for the season, and he would certainly look to try and acheive this milestone against his former club of all teams. Corinthians were slightly under strength and the inclusion of inexperienced yet undoubtedly talented youngsters Paulo, Raphael and Silva e Silva was either an invitation to attack or a warning to defend, only time would tell. Kick off approached.

***

Up on the roof, swathed in black and totally invisible to the crowd below, Sergey lay prone observing a wide vantage point through the scope of his Dragunov rifle. He had a perfect view of the pitch and technical areas, not to mention the open air directors box. He would take down Wolfgang first and then fire at Sam before he had the chance to escape into the tunnel. It would be hard, but Sergey was an accomplished marksman.

10 miles away, Vladimir and Nikolai waited on a remote helipad. The hit was to be completed on the stroke of full time, so they had around an hour of time to kill before taking off. Vladimir was totally unaware of the situation that was about to unfold over the next 90 minutes. Nikolai quietly contemplated how he was going to apprehend Vladimir.

***

The match kicked off. Tempers were obviously high and within two minutes Edcarlos received the game's first booking. The game to a while to settle down and it was Corinthians that started to string together the first few chances. Jose Roberto Silva e Silva, a former transfer target of Sam's had a great shot saved by Barbosa. Just a few minutes later the 21 year old midfielder had another great chance that just shaved the crossbar and went out. This Corinthians domination was soon repressed as against the run of play Juan Guillermo Pinzon converted a Leonardo corner and put Hermann Aichinger 1-0 in front. As it standed Hermann Aichinger were still in 2nd but only by a point, they still had to hope Botafogo would beat São Paulo. Plus they needed a few more goals. That need was soon satisfied as Pinzon got another goal, this time a spectacular volley from range for 2-0. Wellington got the precious third just before the break, now a São Paulo defeat would deliver the title to Hermann Aichinger. But news from the city was that the game was still at 0-0, not good enough for CAHA. The referee brought an exciting first half to a close. 3-0 to Hermann Aichinger, São Paulo being held 0-0.

***

"It should be half time, lets go"

Nikolai and Vladimir leapt into the helicopter, Vladimir taking the controls and preparing for take off. The small, black helicopter took off into the night and began to head towards the Baixada....

***

Meanwhile, the second half was starting. Both teams were going for it and hence it was a scrappy and even opening to the second half. However it was Hermann Aichinger that delivered the killer blow, Wellington scoring his 40th goal of the season, making it 4-0. Game over for Corinthians. The rest of the game was spent listening to news from the São Paulo game, still 0-0. Hermann Aichinger could have had 5 or 6 but in truth their minds were drifting elsewhere. A stadium-wide sigh signalled that São Paulo had drawn with Botafogo and therefore one the league by a solitary point. The dream was over for Sam Cox and his men but it meant Copa Libertadores football next season and a real chance of winning the league next season.

***

Up on the roof, Sergey prepared to take his shot. Through the telescopic sight he could see Wolfgang sat with his head in his hands, a clear shot, an easy shot. He squeezed the trigger gently, adjusted his aim due to wind direction and slowly began to pull back the trigger, in an instant the shot would be taken and the next on its way. But just as he tried to pull the trigger, the rifle was kicked out of his hands and two men dressed in some kind of Special Ops outfits were holding machine guns pointed at his head. They instructed him to slowly get to his feet and keep his hands where they could see them, they had British accents. He obeyed but at a snails pace to buy himself time. It was at that point that he could hear a helicopter approaching.

Up in the helicopter, Vladimir looked down at where Sergey was supposed to be waiting for extraction. Instead of that he saw two men pointing guns at his comrade. He banked left sharply.

"We have been compromised, time to leave!"

"Don't move, keep the helicopter steady"

Vladimir looked to the left and saw Nikolai pointing a hand gun at him. He pulled out of the sharp bank and levelled the helicopter, he reduced speed and slowed to a steady hover. He was a mercenary not an extremist, he ideally wanted out of this alive, especially when he sensed a deal would be forthcoming.

"Land this thing, and you can go free along with the fee for this job, as long as you give us information."

"Information on the famous NPD, of course, considering you have made a very nice offer. However, I trusted you once, why should I trust you again?"

"You have the assurance of the British Government"

"Again, how can I trust you?"

"Enough of this, land the plane and tell us everything you know and we will forget this ever happened"

***

Down on the roof, the sight of the helicopter made Sergey feel immensely betrayed. Those two have betrayed me to the West, he thought bitterly. Unaware of the deal that was being offered to him and Vladimir (and for all he knew Nikolai), he now only though of revenge on the two "comrades" that had apparantly betrayed him. With lightining quick movements he snatched hold of one of the soldier's guns and pointed it skywards. The soldier still had hold of it and wrestled with Sergey for it, however Sergey had his finger on the trigger and released a burst skyward. The other soldier fired a short burst into Sergey's chest, who went down instantly. Cursing his partner's carelessness, he looked skyward and realised what a grave error they had made.

Smoke was billowing into the cockpit.

"What the hell was that?"

"Someone shot at us, they've hit the fuel tank. We're losing fuel and power"

The internal computer in the cockpit began buzzing incessantly, the helicopter began to roll around in the air, Vladimir furiosly struggled with the controls trying to regain balance. Five bullets had torn through the underbelly of the chopper and now they were losing fuel and spouting smoke and flames. It became clear that they would have to try and crash land it, but chances of survival would be slim. Rather more worringly they had drifted right over the stadium which was still packed with people.

***

Sam heard the commotion before he saw it. Screams and shouts and what sounded like a helicopter. He had just been about to go down the tunnel when he heard the shouts and screams and now he ran back onto the pitch. What he saw horrified him. A small helicopter was spinning out of control towards the south stand behind him. Spouting smoke and flame as it went, the rotors seized up and the helicopter began to plummet towards the screaming people hurrying out of the south stand. It was like something out of a nightmare, Sam braced himself as the fireball began to speed towards him........

Freak incident mars final match day, leaving 6 dead and many more in critical conditions

12th December 2011

http://www.atleticoha.com.br

Hermann Aichinger had been celebrating a famous 4-0 victory against Corinthians, which saw them narrowly miss out on the title, when one of the most bizarre accidents in recent times occured. Not long after full time, a small helicopter veered directly over the stadium and began to lose control. Eye-witnesses report seeing copius amounts of smoke and flames eminating from the helicopter, suggesting it had suffered some damage which most certainly caused it to crash. It then began to spin directly towards the south stand, where thousands of fans still remained. Fortunately it lost all power and plummeted on to the pitch, averting the mass casualties that would have occured had it hit the south stand. However, the pilot and co-pilot were both killed in the crash and the resulting explosion killed 4 fans who had been on the pitch at the time. Unconfirmed reports suggest that up to 15 people are in critical conditions in a local hospital, their identities so far unknown.

This has been without doubt the most tragic thing to affect a football match in recent times and a club spokesman offered formal condolences to the 4 fans that were killed in the accident. Despite the severity of the incident, no structural damage was caused to the newly expanded ground, although it was scant consolation for the 4 lives lost. Several witnesses outside the ground reported hearing gun-fire shortly before the crash, fuelling speculation that the helicopter was shot down, the reason will surely be determined in a police investigation.

Local police have confirmed an investigation is under way but have admitted that it is unlikely they will get to the bottom of the accident: "Whilst we are launching an immediate investigation, it is a difficult task to try and identify the bodies of the co-pilot and pilot. Because of this it is unlikely this case will be solved any time soon, we have no leads as to how this happened".

New Year Transfer Update 2012

Out

Paulo Roberto - San Lorenzo - £950,000

With both Para and Jorge Gimenez making the right back position secure, unfortunately we decided that we would no longer require the services of Paulo and mid-way through 2011 he was placed on the transfer list. However his decent performances in 2009 and 2010 had not been forgotten around South America. San Lorenzo came in and snapped him up for just short of a million pounds, Paulo had no hesitation in making the switch to Argentina.

Leonardo - Palmeiras - £625,000

Leonardo had been ever present in the left back position for us the past two seasons, however it was a position we felt we needed to strengthen. Palmeiras had always made themselves known to be interested in Leonardo and they eventually got their man.

Diego Morais - Pasching - £500,000

Diego had been an important player for us at one point and in 2008 he netted 29 goals for the season but that was a fair while ago and since then he has made little impact for the team, however he secured a move to Europe. Pasching in Austria were keen to have him and the deal was completed.

Gomes - Coruripe - £400,000

Gomes was an academy player, in fact the first decent prospect our youth setup had produced. He was promoted to the senior squad in 2011, but made little impact making only 2 appearances. Third Division side Coruripe made an offer of an impressive £400,000, an offer which we could not refuse.

Released Players

-Jonathan, now at Londrina

-Rodrigues (Under 20), now at Maruinense

-Jose Paulo Pacheco (Under 20), now at Chapadinha

-Fabio (Under 20), now at 4 de Julho

-Everaldo (Under 20), now at Caxiense

-Marcelo (Under 20), now at Jaguare

Roger Andrade Silva

"Roger" 15, DR - Free

Juninho Pernambucano recommended explosve young right back Roger to me at the start of the transfer window. We signed him up immediately and he looks set to become one of the stars of the youth team this season

Henrique Alves dos Santos

"Henrique" 20, D/WBL - £3,000,000 - Sport Recife

Under 20 international Henrique was an ideal replacement for the departed Leonardo. The youngster had started out his career at Third Division side Anapolina before earning a move to Internacional in 2009. After a fairly average two seasons with Inter, he then went to Sport Recife in 2011 a step backwards career-wise. However he excelled for Sport and was an integral part in their relegation survival. In that season he became a regular in the Brazil Under 20 side and to date has 13 caps and 1 goal to his name. A big signing for us.

Carlos Alberto Raposo

"Carlos Alberto" 19, GK - £975,000 - SE Gama

Started out as a youngster in the Goias academy, from there he went to play for SE Gama in the Second Division and at the age of just 17 became first choice keeper. A much needed addition as cover for Barbosa, Carlos immediately took the chance to further his career.

Wilson Viana

"Viana" 18, DM - £2,000,000 - Fortaleza

A fantastic prospect, Viana is a long term replacement for Fagner Galvão. Blessed with amazing ability we had to fend off a number of other sides to secure his signature. A major transfer for Fortaleza who will fin £2,000,000 crucial in their quest to bounce back from relegation to the Third Division.

Once again, thank you very much chesterfan. It's always nice to hear from someone that has been reading from the start icon14.gif. I think we are entering the latter stages of this story, with this coming season (2012) possibly being the penultimate one. All things must come to an end and I think this one has almost run its course, unless I can persuade myself to complete a decade as CAHA boss. However I am thinking of writing a spin off or possibly a short story in the future, so the game will be kept running after this story comes to an end.

The structural damage that had been sustained had been repaired fairly quickly in time for the new season. However the emotional damage was proving to be tough to deal with, the death toll eventually rising to 7 fans. A memorial service was planned at the stadium and a statue was commissioned to comemorate the fans that had been lost. Sam and four time fan's player of the year Wellington, placed a wreath at the foot of the statue, before the gathered crowd observed a minutes silence. The club then pledged that all the players would wear black armbands for the remainder of the season as a mark of respect. The police had abandoned their investigation and the identities of the two pilots remained unknown. The thought that this accident may have had a sinister input, was a thought that often entered Sam's mind, but he at least considered the matter between him and the NPD resolved, but he was never sure as far as the German organisation was concerned. This was a terrible way to see in the New Year, especially given the superb performance that the team had put in last season. Runners up in the league after just 6 years previously being in the Third Division, now they had the Copa Libertadores to look forward to. Wolgang was present at the memorial ceremony and after it was finished, Sam went to have a word with his chairman.

"How are things?"

"It's difficult to say, all I want to do is find out who did this. To be honest I have a fair idea. How are the new players?"

"Settling in well, Viana looks a class act"

"I should hope so, two million for an 18 year old is a big gamble for a club like us."

"He'll come good, so anyway you were saying you think you know who was behind the crash, you don't think it was an accident?"

Wolfgang solemnly shook his head.

"I think this one is to do with our 'friends' over in Germany..."

He chuckled to himself.

"It is supposed to be my homeland, but I face threats from every direction in the place I used to call home. I feel much more at home here."

It was at that point that Sam began to think of his own homeland. Six years had gone fast and he hadn't really thought of everything he had left behind in England. But now he felt a pang of homesickness and he began to realise he needed to think about when he was to return. Not yet though, he thought. But Hermann Aichinger was not a job for life and he began thinking about his options.

Santa Catarina State Round Up 2012

At first I had thought that the state championships were an over-long and unneccesary distraction from the season ahead, but now I find it a useful exercise in preparing the players, getting their fitness up and allowing the strikers to re-discover their goalscoring form after the end of season holiday. It was also useful in settling in the new signings. However it was a competetion that we had performed in poorly in past years, under my management we have only won the competetion only once out of five attempts and it was my aim to reclaim the title. We were drawn in Group 2 alongside Third Division sides Avai, Criciuma and Tuburão who were all tricky sides to play against. Joining those teams were non-league sides Chapecoense and Guarani de Palhoca, a team we have racked up many goals against. Qualification should be a certainty and we got off to a great start, knocking 7 past Guarani de Palhoca. We had lost a few players who were off competing at the South American Under 20 championships, always an annoyance at this early stage of the season. Plus Barbosa and Juan Pinzon were off representing Brazil and Colombia at senior level for the first time. But despite that it was a comfortable win with Juliano, Ale, Whoshington and João Paulo all scoring plus two penalties converted by Para.

Next was a tricky trip to Tuburão and we ended up on the better side of an 8 goal thriller. Wendel Brasilia gave the home side a shock lead, before Wellington and Whoshington were both on target (Whoshington twice) to put us 3-1 up at half time. But in the second half, Tuburão struck back through Rubens to make it 3-2. Whoshington secured his hat-trick to restore the two goal cushion late on, but not long after that Rubens got his second to make it 4-3. In stoppage time Wellington netted his second and ended the game 5-3, a spirited display from Tuburão.

It was another close game at home to Criciuma although we seemed to have wrapped it up. Two goals from Wellington and one from Ale put us 3-1 up, as Fagner Galvão had carelessly put the ball in his own in the first half, with just four minutes remaining. However we were complacent and Raimundo Filho and Franklin rescued a 3-3 draw. But it was the only points we would drop in the whole group phase. An easy 4-1 win against former bitter rivals Avai followed, Correa and Pinzon making scoring returns along with goals from Wellington and Whoshington. Alysson grabbed the consolation for Avai.

Chapecoense put up some stubborn resistance in the next game but two early goals from João Paulo and Pablo Correa gave us a 2-0 win. Guarani de Palhoca gave an improved performance as this time they only let in three goals, all of them in the first half. Wellington, Moises and Pablo Correa all on target.

Tuburão received a good hiding when they visited us, Pablo Correa netting a hat trick inside 12 minutes. Fagner Galvão and Wellington added two of their own in a rampant 7-0 win. A comprehensive 5-0 win against Chapecoense followed, João Paulo netting two, his midfield colleague Galvão just the one, plus two outstanding free kicks from Juliano. The group was rounded off with a comfortable 2-0 win against Avai, Whoshington and Pablo Correa sealing the win.

Semi Final Draw

Hermann Aichinger vs. Marcilio Dias

Figueirense vs. Criciuma

After failing at this stage the previous two seasons, we were handed a semi final tie that we couldn't really mess up. Marcilio Dias were making their first semi final appearance in a long time. We produced a confident display in the first leg, Pablo Correa scoring twice and Fagner Galvão also on target to give us a 3-0 lead. However there was a small glimmer of hope for Marcilio Dias as right winger Souza scored late on to reduce the defecit to two goals.

Marcilio Dias had played fairly well in the first leg but they were totally outclassed in the second, Whoshington, Pablo Correa and two goals from Juan Guillermo Pinzon sealing a 4-0 win that sent us into the final with a 7-1 aggregate win. We would go on to face Figueirense who had defeated Criciuma 4-3 on aggregate.

Final

Figueirense vs. Hermann Aichinger

Our last state final appearances was also against Figueirense, then it had taken penalties to beat the Second Division side. However you could have argued that back in 2009 Figueirense were a much better team than us. But now there was a huge gulf in class and we should claim an easy win over two legs. Over 20,000 people packed the Orlando Scarpelli in Florianopolis for the first leg. And after just two minutes it looked as though our now trademark stutter in this competetion would strike again. Romulo sent the home fans into raptures as he scored a fantastic goal to give Figueirense an early 1-0 lead. We didn't play at all well and in the second half it looked to be heding for disaster as Osmar doubled Figueirense's lead. A late goal from Pablo Correa pulled it back to 2-1, but we would go into the second leg a goal down.

Thankfully Pablo Correa levelled the tie after just 7 minutes had been played in the seccond leg, a sublime chip making it 2-2 on aggregate. It was a close game that once again looked to be heading for penalties until Juan Guillermo Pinzon netted the winner late on. A 3-2 aggregate victory allowing us to get our hands on the state trophy for a second time.

Hermann Aichinger pair receive first full international caps

1st April 2012

http://www.atleticoha.com.br

CAHA pair Barbosa and Juan Guillermo Pinzon yesterday made history as the first Hermann Aichinger players to represent their country at senior level. Both players were regularly involved in the Under 20's in both Brazil and Colombia, but due to their excellent form for their club they could be ignored no longer by Brazil manager Mano Menezes and Colombian boss Juan Ramon Carrasco. Barbosa made his debut last week against Ecuador, keeping a clean sheet in the 2-0 win in the World Cup Qualifiying match. Yesterday Barbosa made his second appearance, this time facing his club team-mate Juan Guillermo Pinzon's Colombia. Pinzon made his debut on the right wing for Colombia. Brazil looked to be heading for victory after a goal from Inter striker Adriano plus some outstanding goalkeeping from the new Brazil No.1 seemed to be sending them towards a 1-0 win. But Barbosa's only mistake was to let in Mallorca striker Armando Jose Carillo's shot past him in the dying seconds which ended the game 1-1. Pinzon only got 15 minutes on the pitch, but was delighted with his debut.

CAHA manager Sam Cox is said to be over the moon with his players. In an interview on the club's website he praised his players for making the breakthrough at the early ages of 20 and 19. "I always knew that these two in particular had the quality to play for their countries, it can only further their development". Barbosa and Pinzon are not the only players tipped to succeed at that level. Starlets Pablo Correa and Jorge Gimenez are widely tipped to go on to represent Argentina, while left winger Moises could potentially play for Brazil in the future.

Copa Libertadores Group B Round Up

We had finally made it to the prestigious Copa Libertadores, a competetion that I had dreamed about ever since arriving in Brazil. We had tested ourselves against the best Brazil and now we wanted to pit ourselves against the rest of the continent, the prize at the end of which, a shot at the European champions for the World title. Our group was a fairly tough one, the hardest test undoubtedly Mexican champions Cruz Azul. Uruguayan runners up Nacional were a good side and so were Bolivian champions The Strongest. However I expected us to qualify quite comfortably.

Our first game ever played outside of Brazil, saw us travel to Bolivian capital La Paz, to face The Strongest. Despite their intimidating name they showed that in several key areas they were 'the weakest'. But it was the Bolivians who should have taken the lead early on after they were awarded a penalty. But Pedro Soliz had his spot-kick saved by the new Brazilian No.1, Barbosa. It would prove to be costly for the Bolivians as just minutes later, young left winger Moises’ cross looped into the net for 1-0. The lead was doubled after around half an hour as Pablo Correa fired past the keeper for 2-0. Three minutes after that Whoshington headed in from a corner and then another few minutes after that Pablo Correa got his second to make it 4-0 at half time. The Strongest threw everything behind the ball in the second half to avoid further embarrassment and it worked, we couldn’t add to our lead and we finished the game 4-0 victors.

Nacional at home was the next fixture, and the ground was packed for the visit of the Uruguayans. A Whoshington penalty put us 1-0 in front at half time, Nacional putting up much more stubborn resistance than The Strongest. However in the second half we finally broke them down, Pablo Correa doubling the lead. But Nacional still continued to battle away and they pulled one back through Leonardo Alonso with around 15 minutes left to go. But the match was sealed just a few minutes later as Whoshington got his second, ending the game 3-1.

Next came the toughest fixture of the group, Cruz Azul away. The Mexican champions played very well and put us under huge amounts of pressure. That pressure was rewarded with a goal from international veteran Kikin Fonseca putting Cruz Azul 1-0 in front. We began to settle in the second half and Pablo Correa scored a great equaliser to make it 1-1. Both teams had opportunities to win the match but this one ended in a draw.

After three fixtures we topped the group and it looked set to continue when The Strongest made the trip to Brazil. João Paulo and Pablo Correa were on target either side of half time as we won 2-0 and booked our place in the second round. After that we travelled to Montevideo to play Nacional and it was the home side that were humiliated, two goals from Whoshington, a long range strike from João Paulo and a Sebastian Garcia own goal sent Nacional crashing out after a 4-0 defeat.

We rounded off the group at home to Cruz Azul, it was a no pressure match as both of us had already qualified. Despite that it was still taken seriously as we wanted to finish top of the group. We managed to take the lead after about half an hour, Fagner Galvão with a swerving shot that beat Pablo Vidal. Once again it was a very tight match and Cruz Azul equalised in the second half through South African winger Daine Klate. It looked to be heading for a draw, until two stoppage time goals won it for us. First João Paulo beat the keeper from distance then Wellington tapped in from close range to end it 3-1 and Group B was ours.

The new NPD headquarters building in Munich was an imposing structure, purchased with the now bottomless coffers of funding that the party now received. A huge building it loomed menacingly in the Munich sky-line, a gothic grey tower that overlooked the area for miles. It had been installed with a few nostalgic touches, most notably a gold plated elevator that only went to the very top floor, the president's office. A ridiculous piece of eccentricity modelled on that of the Eagle's Nest in the 1940's. It was right wing Germany's new fortress, impenetrable security and other such measures of paranoia were the standard in this place.

Gunther Krieg sat in the President's office, he was party leader in all but name. A puppet President that had all the major decisions made for him by an elite comittee of investors and the imprisoned Helmut. Helmut was not getting out of prison any time soon, yet still he called the shots whilst Gunther was the public face of the campaign. The German people had been surprisingly less cautious towards the new NPD leader, many believing that he was out of place in such an extremist movement. He was a genial man, a little rotund perhaps, middle aged and with a fairly decent manner about him. It was this likeable nature that deceived the public, some believed that he would smooth the rough edges of the party, make them less extreme. It had worked, the anti semitic rallying stopped and the NPD shed their thuggish image to adopt a more proffessional attitude. All of a sudden they just came across as a party with strong moral values and with a reactionary idea towards how they believed Germany should be run. Where have we heard this before? These seemingly new ideas, as they always do, attracted some parts of the public and as a result the votes received began to gradually increase. Having said that it was still nowhere near enough, but it was enough to send alarm bells ringing around the world. The Americans and the French had naively dismissed them, claiming that Germany wouldn't dare rewind the clock. But the British were observing it all with interest and the incident in Brazil although a failure by the British Security Services had shown that they were prepared to act albeit undercover.

News of the failed mission had reached the NPD with lightning speed, their old enemies had once again evaded death much to the concern of Helmut and other senior members. Gunther was still sat in his chair going over a speech he was due to give at a party conference later that evening, when the phone rang. It was Helmut.

"Gunther? How are things?"

"Running smoothly Herr President, I trust you are still being treated well?"

"My brief stay in this institution is remaining very comfortable, I am phoning to give you instructions. This line is secure incase you were wondering."

"What is it?"

"Our friends in Brazil have shown a reluctance to accept their fate. It pains me to tell you this, but the party is to stand down with regards to them, immediate effect. The last operation was a mess and I curse the day we assigned the Russians to do our dirty work, they were too easily infiltrated by the British. But we must be thankful that there is no evidence either way to suggest it was anything other than an accident. I think we should take this as a sign to stand down."

"But what if they cause more trouble?"

"I find that unlikely, as far as they are concerned this matter has been resolved for a while now, ever since you wined and dined them in Munich. Unless they are stupid they will remain silent. So for now at least they must live, do you understand?"

"Yes Herr President, Wiederhören."

April/May 2012

After sealing qualification to the latter stages of the Copa Libertadores, we turned our attention to the opening of the league season. We opened with an away trip to Coritiba, a team that were regular candidates for relegation, yet somehow they always survived, pulling off the odd transfer coup along the way. Although finishing 17th last year, they were still 18 points clear of the relegation zone and this year they would certainly be looking to improve. However it was a successful first away trip for us as we capitalised on our dominance as early as the ninth minute, Wellington opening his league account for the season. Moises added to the lead with a superb free kick before Whoshington made it 3-0 just before half time. The team weren’t satisfied with just the 3 goals, Moises getting his second of the afternoon just seconds before the break. In the second half we took our foot off the gas and held out for an impressive 4-0 victory.

Then came the long and arduous journey to Colombia to face Deportivo Cali in the Second Round of the Copa Libertadores. We took control early on as Wellington notched up yet another goal making it 1-0. It was a game that wasn’t played in the best of spirits, both teams having a man sent off, Joaquin Martinez for Cali and Lucas Rocha for us. Pablo Correa scored in stoppage time to make it 2-0 and seal a vital away win, giving us a great chance of making the quarter finals.

They didn’t come much harder than in our next fixture. Reigning champions São Paulo were the first side to visit the Baixada for the 2012 season and it promised to be a cracking match. São Paulo had narrowly beat us to the title last season but we were in no mood to let that happen again. Although it was so early in the season we knew that a win was vital in getting as much of an early advantage as possible. In the first half it was the champions that dominated and soon enough their pressure was converted into a goal, young striker Alan firing past Carlos Alberto who was deputising for Barbosa in goal, to make it 1-0 to the champions. But we never let our heads drop and in the second half we were presented the perfect opportunity to level the game from the penalty spot. Matheus was not our regular penalty taker, but he dispatched this one with cool composure, levelling the game at 1-1. From then on it was us with the upper hand and we pressed to try and take the lead. It took a little over five minutes for Wellington to be found in space and fire home from fairly short range, making it 2-1. A crucial win was sealed late on as João Paulo blasted home from 30 yards with a little under 10 minutes to go. Final score, a crucial 3-1 win.

After beating Deportivo Cali 2-0 in the first leg of the Copa Libertadores we were highly fancied to progress to the quarter finals. Our chances were increased dramatically at the start of the second leg as Wellington put us further ahead with an early goal. Juan Guillermo Pinzon made it 4-0 on aggregate with a sublime free kick. However Deportivo Cali hit back soon after, youngster Cesar Augusto Gomez with a well taken shot. The 18 year old Colobian striker would later seal a move to Atletico Mineiro. But it was too little too late as Wellington added another to make it 3-1 on the night. In the end it was a bit of a thrashing as Wellington completed his hat-trick and João Paulo also scored to end it 5-1 on the night, a 7-1 aggregate victory seeing us through to the Quarter Finals.

Before the crucial Quarter Final against Paranaense we faced a tough trip to Vasco, looking to preserve our 100% record. The home side took a deserved and quick lead, Juan Albin and Lico scoring inside 20 minutes to give Vasco a 2-0 lead. Pablo Correa pulled one back just before half time, but it would take a very late goal from Welington to recue a point, this match finishing 2-2. Our 100% record had gone but we had still made a very positive start.

The visit to the Kyocera Arena was going to be a tough one and our South American campaign could be about to come to an end. It was a tough first leg against Paranaense but in the end just one goal separated the two teams. Yet again Wellington was the man with the crucial goal and thankfully it was enough to take a one goal advantage into the second leg. The second leg was even more tight than the first and it seemed as though Wellington's goal would be enough to see us through. However late on in the game our minds were put at rest as Pablo Correa scored to double our aggregate lead and seemingly pave the way towards the Semi Finals. But Paranaense set up a nervy ending as Vanderson scored late on but it was not enough for the visitors and much to the delight of our fans, we had made the Semi Finals in only our first season in continental competition.

After playing so poorly against Vasco it was vital that we bounced back against Botafogo. Spurred on by our success in South America, the players didn't fail to deliver. Wellington, Pinzon and João paulo were all on target inside 20 minutes as we raced into a 3-0 lead. Felipe Adão pulled one back for the visitors but Ale sealed a comprehensive 4-1 win in stoppage time. Finally we faced newly promoted Nautico who sprung a huge surprise when we travelled to play them. Juan Guillermo Pinzon had given us the lead but Nautico striker Marcio had scored two goals before half time to make it 2-1 to the underdogs. João Paulo had the opportunity to level it from the spot but his penalty was saved and we succumbed to the unlikliest of defeats and our first of the season.

The times of financial hardship for Atletico Hermann Aichinger were well and truly over. Things had been tight for the past two years but thanks to performances on the pitch, financial security had been assured. Being the major shareholder had given Wolfgang a huge amount of power, but he didn't let it get to his head. He involved his board of directors on all the major decisions the club made and he took no major risks in order to safeguard the club's future. Nor did he use the power or money for his own personal gains, of course he took home a nice pay cheque but the club came first and this attitude made him an immensely popular chairman among the fans.

But for what was to come ahead, it would be time to go against all of those ideals. It would take money, the club's money. It would also take the exploitation of his new found power to succeed. But the way Wolfgang looked at it, it was for the greater good. Another significant point was that this time he would be working alone. Apart from when they were brief enemies, him and Sam had worked together through all of the threats that they had faced, and although they hadn't always done things right, they seemed to keep each other out of trouble. But this wasn't the Englishman's fight, in fact Wolfgang was surprised that he hadn't gone back to England sooner, but he knew in truth that Sam had fallen in love with this part of the country, the club and the success that he had brought onto it.

The NPD had made them run and hide for the past two years and as far as Wolfgang was concerned enough was enough. Sam had put his talents to use with the club while Wolfgang sat around doing nothing. It was time to re-discover his talents, he was a planner, a schemer, in all honesty a con man but it was what he was good at, and this time he would use those talents against those who had made his life hell for the past three years.

But in order to succeed in the plan that was slowly formulating in his mind, old enemies would have to become allies and for that he would have to use his influence. It would take just one phone-call, he had no idea that the NPD had instructed their "thugs" to give him space. But it wouldn't matter if he did know, they were about to get a taste of their own medicine. He finally got a reply on the other end of the phone.

"I need a favour, I need some charges dropped"

Thanks to all that made this tale 2006 Joint Best Rest of World Story, it's really appreciated

June 2012

With a Copa Libertadores Semi Final fast approaching, it wasn't the best of times to have to play some of our more difficult league fixtures. Atletico Paranaense were undoubtedly a tough team to face but good preparation for the upcoming trip to Mexico. We started fairly brightly but it wasn't long before we were on the back foot as young striker Claudio punished a momentary lapse in the defence to put Paranaense 1-0 in front. However, some superb attacking play from us would not go un-rewarded as Pablo Correa scored an equaliser just before the break. In the second half we began to take control and it wasn't long before we broke the visitors down again. Another 25 yard effort from João Paulo, who seems to be unstoppable from that range put us 2-1 ahead. But Paranaense were by no means done and it was Claudio again that found the net to level it at 2-2. However, just two minutes later Whoshington grabbed a late winner to seal all three points in an impressive victory for us and ideal preparation for the trip to Mexico.

After what felt like an eternity, we arrived in Mexico City to face Cruz Azul. Confidence was high as we had beaten this side in the group stages and were confident of doing do again. We were right to be confident as Wellington scored a magnificent early goal to give us the lead. A lead that was doubled just before half time, Wellington getting his second of the night. Cruz Azul began to fight back in the second half but we doggedly resisted their attempts and claimed a great away win.

We returned home to play our next league match and our minds were most definitely on the Copa Libertadores as we slumped to an unimpressive 3-1 defeat away at Fluminense. Marcelo Macedo had put the home side 1-0 up before Edivaldo doubled that lead. Wellington pulled one back but Edivaldo got his second in stoppage time to condemn us to defeat.

Then came the visit of Cruz Azul for the second leg of the Semi Final. We started it in perfect fashion, Wellington decimated the Mexicans defence once again and put us 1-0 in front, that made it a 3-0 aggregate lead, surely we would be progressing to the final in our South American debut season. But Cruz Azul didn’t get too down hearted and in the second half midfielder Gerardo Lugo pulled a goal back to make it 3-1 on aggregate. Five minutes later Brazilian forward Muriqui put Cruz Azul ahead on the night with a tremendous solo effort. That made it 3-2 on aggregate and nerves were beginning to set in. Those nerves were soon calmed when Wellington broke through and restored the two goal aggregate cushion. Moises added to that lead with a fluke cross that looped into the net. At 5-2 on aggregate we seemed to be cruising again but it still wasn’t over. Naturalised Mexican international Nene headed home to equalise on the night and make it 5-3 on aggregate. Just a few minutes later Muriqui got his second of the night as Cruz Azul took a 4-3 lead on the night but still trailing 5-4 on aggregate. Cruz Azul pushed for the goal that would level the tie but it never came and we held out to make the final.

Copa Libertadores 2012 Final Draw

Hermann Aichinger vs. Flamengo

It was more disappointment however when we returned to the league competition. We went down 1-0 to a poor Cruzeiro team to record a second straight loss, Nelio with the only goal for the Minas Gerais side. Then a disappointing draw against Gremio in which we had to come from behind. Pedro Junior gave Gremio the lead before Lucas Rocha headed an equaliser in the second half. While in South America everything seems to be going well, our league form is worrying if we are to challenge for the title.

"What is it you want from me?"

"For now, I just want you to sit down and listen whilst I tell you what you are going to do. If you do not,......well...I gather you were not fond of your stay in prison, I'm sure you would not wish to return."

Max Stader did as he was told and sat down in comfy armchair opposite Wolfgang's desk. Max looked much older and more weary, the two and a half years in prison had obviously taken its toll, it seemed to make him look ten years older than when Wolfgang had last seen him in the new year of 2009. Despite that, he looked a lot leaner and fitter than he had been. He had been told about everything that had happened in the last 30 months, Wolfgang's deception, the rise of the NPD and indeed the rise of the football club. Wolfgang allowed an uncomfortable silence to continue for a few moments before addressing Max.

"Here is what I am going to offer you, I say 'offer', you really have no choice should you wish to continue to have your freedom. The certain 'unpleasantries' that have clouded our pasts and resulted in your imprisonment will be forgotten. You will be given a position at the club as a Director, with a decent salary. Ultimately you will be out of the way and you will live out the rest of your days in comfort. This plus your freedom I offer you in return for a favour."

"What is it?"

"Your son, I need him to do something for me. I need someone in Germany watching the NPD. As I told you they now own 1860 Munich, so Manni will go to Germany under the guise of a scout. This is purely observation, he won't have to get his hands dirty."

"And how long is this for?"

"As long as it takes."

"What happens when he is done?"

"He takes up a position identical to yours, but it is really up to him. He may not want to stick around like you."

Max was deep in thought, he really didn't have much choice and after all, Wolfgang had revealed himself to be a friend not a foe.

"When does he start?"

Wolfgang grinned.

"He is already on the plane to Munich."

The 2012 Copa Libertadores Final

Hermann Aichinger vs. Flamengo (To be played over two legs)

This was it. We were finally in our first major final and best of all, this was our debut season in South America. Flamengo would be tough opponents and especially as we had to travel to the glamourous venue that was the Maracanã for the first leg. This was arguably the finest Mengão side since the days of Zico in the early eighties and to cap it all, they had a ferocious record at home. The trophy would stay in Brazil for a second successive season, but the exact destination was so hard to predict before the epic first leg.

The first leg was one to forget for the Flamengo fans, more so because they were so expectant in the build up to the first leg at the Maracanã. The first twenty minutes was a nervy affair with both teams struggling to retain possession. There were no real chances to speak of from either team, both ourselves and Flamengo did not want to make any early mistakes. Sure enough we settled down and began to take the game to Flamengo and it was a moment of individual brilliance that led to the deadlock being broken. A deep cross had been impressively collected by Flamengo keeper Diego, but his thrown clearance soared into no-man’s land just inside the Flamengo half. The ball was picked up by Whoshington who embarked on an audacious run, beating three players and then using his momentum to round the keeper and slot it home. 1-0 and the advantage swung our way. We desperately tried to increase our lead before the break, knowing we had to try and end the tie as quickly as we could. A 42nd minute corner brought the reward we were looking for. Maycon was earning a rare start and he claimed a Copa Libertadores Final goal, thumping a header home direct from a corner. 2-0 with a quarter of the tie gone, we were looking good for a historic win. Our odds of such a win were greatly improved in the second half as Whoshington pounced on a through ball from Pinzon and took a shot which cruelly deflected off the last defender and left Diego wrong footed. It was to be the last event of the leg as we cruised to a fantastic 3-0 first leg victory. Surely now the trophy was in sight.

Around 15,000 crammed into the Estadio de Baixada to see the second leg of the final. I had never known such an atmosphere, a sea of red flags greeted the player’s arrival on the pitch. But the massive home support were silenced as Flamengo opened the scoring very early on. Geninho wriggled through a gap in the defence and fired past Barbosa, the Brazilian No.1 got a slight touch on the shot but not enough., it meant that the aggregate scoreline was now 3-1. We couldn’t afford to let Flamengo back in the game as they put us under intense pressure. Thankfully we made it to half time still with the score at 1-0, time was now running out for Flamengo. The welcome half time break led to a shift in dominance in the second half, Flamengo needed two goals and were panicking. This lead to vast gaps appearing everywhere and our young players were only too happy to exploit them. The match was finally settled shortly after the kick off in the second half. Pablo Correa was played in by Matheus and the Argentine fired home from 12 yards. After that Flamengo folded, we were unlucky not to find another goal. The final whistle was greeted by an immense roar that echoed throughout the stadium. Laps of honour, endless amounts of champagne, the presentation of the trophy and a street parade all followed. But I knew that the real prize was a shot at the European champions and we were ready for the challenge. So come the end of the year, we would be headed for Japan.

Final Score (on aggregate): Hermann Aichinger 4-1 Flamengo

Sam realised that to attempt to prevent his players from letting their hair down after such a victory would be futile. However, he himself abstained from the wild celebrations that continued until the early hours of the morning. He knew full well it would make him seem a boring old git, but he had work to do. A major battle had been won, but the war was still in its infancy and if Wolfgang's suspicions were correct it was being fought on more than one front. Winning the Copa Libertadores now lead to an increased schedule. When the league season was over and the rest of the Brazilian teams would be taking their pre-season holidays, Sam and his team would be jetting off to Yokohama to do battle for the World crown, most likely with Spanish outfit Deportivo la Coruna who had triumphed in the Champions League a month previously. Attention now turned back to the league campaign and the distractions of Hermann Aichinger's continental exploits had lead to a slow start from Sam's team. They had impressed against their title rivals but stumbled over somewhat easier hurdles. But with all distractions now put to one side, a push for the title was definitely possible. They had come so close last year, it seemed only right that they erase those memories of the last matchday in which they trounced reigning champions Corinthians all to no avail.

Sam left for his island retreat in Ilha de Santa Catarina around one in the morning, he would spend the remainder of the week there recovering and relaxing, before a board meeting on the monday. Thankfully he had a full 11 days before the next match, the visit of Palmeiras. Before he left, he heard Pablo Correa rambling on to some of his team-mates about a strip club in nearby city Florianopolis. The 19 year old appeared to be fairly partial to those kind of delights and he appeared to have successfully corrupted his younger and more innocent team-mates Moises and Viana in joining him in that excursion. Sam couldn't hold it against him, he had more than done his part that night. As long as he stayed out of trouble and arrived for training promptly, it didn't bother Sam. Pablo was world class and he was just relishing every moment they were lucky enough to have him. Sam wouldn't be in the job forever and he felt that as soon as he was gone, a move to Europe would follow for Correa.

With his Libertadores medal in a case resting on the dashboard he drove the long journey home and as he collapsed onto his bed, he fell asleep the moment his head hit the deck. He slept for pretty much the next 24 hours, not because of physical exhaustion but through the sheer mental effort that night had cost him. He spent a relaxing few days in Ilha de Santa Catarina before returning for the board meeting Wolfgang had called, of course Sam wasn't a board member but he was invited along regularly anyway.

When Sam walked through the door, there was a new face greeting him although he quickly came to recognise it. It was Max, fresh out of prison and bizarrely standing beside Wolfgang, the man he had tried to kill, an act that lead to him doing time. The last time he had seen Max, he supposed they had been sort of allies. However since his prison stretch, Sam had found something disturbing about the man and genuinely felt uncomfortable, to put it simply he was a troublemaker and Sam had had enough of trouble following him around. He wondered not only what this was all about and its implications. Max outstretched a hand.

"Sam! Long time no see, I believe a congratulations is in order, my father would have been so proud"

Wolfgang winced uncomfortably at the last comment.

"Thank you,........so I don't quite understand, are you.....out? So to speak?"

"Well...."

Wolfgang chipped in.

"I need to talk to you about that later."

Something wasn't right and Wolfgang was up to something, whatever that was he was about to find out and he could tell he wasn't going to like it. Wolfgang meanwhile was cursing himself, he had sworn to work alone on this but now it was so glaringly obvious that it would be foolish not to fill Sam in on all the details. But by now he knew him well enough to know he would stay out of it all anyway.

July 2012

Palmeiras were the first visitors of the month of July, always a tricky month as the temperatures soared and the players tired a lot easier. Palmeiras were once again looking set to spend another season stuck in mid table obscurity, they had become such an average team, never in danger of relegation but also never likely to acheive much. They were punished in a comfortable display which saw us recover from the slight blip in form prior to this match. Juliano continued his rich vain of form since returning to the starting eleven, opening the scoring with a delightfully taken free kick. It stayed at 1-0 until the final ten minutes when Whoshington fired home our second making it 2-0. Palmeiras managed to salvage a late goal through Diego Souza but our victory was sealed from the penalty spot by Clecio, final score 3-1.

The TV cameras were in place, eagerly awaiting our visit to the Vila Belmiro to play Santos. The last couple of seasons had been a nightmare for Santos and it looked as though they had become a spent force in Brazil. However this season saw something of a turnaround and the loyal Santos fans were daring to dream of a possible title win despite the fact that their trophy cabinet hadn't seen any new additions in four years. We started brightly and the early pressure was rewarded by a goal from Pablo Correa. It looked to stay that way until the final whistle until with barely a minute remaining, Bovio bundled the ball into the net and rescued a point for Santos. It was a game we should have won, I just hope it doesn't turn out to be critical to our title hopes.

But thankfully we were back to winning ways against Sport Recife. Just the one goal won it, a strike from Wellington. It was a goal on his return from injury, he must have been devastated to have missed the Copa Libertadores final but he didn't let that affect his league form as he notched up yet another strike, already well on his way to acheiving 150 goals.

Just the three games in July, a good set of performances as we took a vital seven points. That left us in 3rd, with Flamengo and Internacional setting the early pace.

Munich, Germany

Manni immediately noticed the change in the atmosphere of the city. Until recently it had been a fairly relaxed and easy going place to be, full of culture and a genuine credit to its people. Aesthetically nothing had changed, but the atmosphere was now highly charged and the sense of anxiety and fear was almost palpable. They had known this feeling before, but that was a very long time ago and no-one had the courage to admit that they could detect a similar sense of foreboding.

Munich was now under the administration of the NPD. They had gained their seat in the new year and that coupled with their success in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern was an un-precendented victory for the right wing party. There was a long way to go before they could mount an assault on full power but in all honesty Manni knew that if the democratic route took to long, the first attempted Putsch in almost 90 years since the day Hitler started a failed revolution in a Munich beer hall, would surely bring itself about.

A rally was taking place in the main square to celebrate six months since their victory at the polls. It was a flamboyant affair, flags and crowds of political recruits marching the streets and shouting in unison. These were truly dark days, the sad thing was that they had seen this before and yet nothing is done.

Manni had been in Munich only a month and already he wanted to come home. What Wolfgang had proposed seemed utterly futile and completely foolish. Maybe a few years back, but not now. The NPD's vast funding gave them un-rivalled power in this state, they were almost untouchable, outsiders were not allowed close to their organisation. They were just too careful these days. Sitting in a Cafe overlooking the ridiculously over-exuberant display, Manni picked up his mobile phone and dialled Wolfgang's number, it was the first time he had contacted him since arriving in Germany.

"Hello?"

"It's me"

"Well what's the situation?"

"......Listen, I've done everything you asked me, I've been watching this lot for a month and I'm only going to say this once. They are too powerful for us, by a long way. I doubt even the German government has the resources to tackle this lot. They would be impossible to infiltrate, since shutting up shop in Brazil their numbers have increased tenfold and to cap it all they no longer know the dodgy people that will stick a bullet in your heart, they ARE those people. Since being here, I hear about people going missing all the time, not just any old people but political opponents. No-one is safe here, I've never known anything like it. This is way over our heads, I think it will get to the stage if the rest of Europe does nothing it will spiral out of control, they are poised to gain more seats in the next election."

There was a long pause before Wolfgang replied.

"What are your plans?"

"I've had it with Brazil and Germany, I'm going with some old friends to America, I'll probably stay out there for a while...........listen, I'm sorry I couldn't help you but its in your own interests to let this go. There is nothing more you can do, you can't stop these people."

"Watch me"

The line went dead, Manni sighed and turned off his phone. Finishing his drink he got up and set off towards the U-Bahn. As he went he remembered the Wolfgang he had initially known; cold, calculated and efficient. In his opinion, now he was just a fool with an apparant death wish.

Thanks a lot Andre, that's quite an acheivement reading this from start to finish! Whilst I do have a fairly certain idea of when and how this will finish, it will be around for the forseeable future so I hope you continue to enjoy. And welcome to FMS! icon_wink.gif

August 2012

After re-kindling some of our form in the short spell of matches in July, it was vital that we continued to climb the table in August. It would start with the home match against Bahia. It was a game that we were expected to win convincingly and a great first half performance led to an opening goal just before the break. A clearance from a corner fell perfectly for João Paulo, who blasted it on the volley into the back of the net. The 23 year old midfielder doesn't seem to deal in average goals, he always seems to create spectacular finishes on a regular basis. Our dominance continued into the second half but we were pegged back about 20 minutes from the end, Fabio Bala rising to head home an equaliser against the run of play. It looked for a moment as though we would have to settle for a draw, but Whoshington came to the rescue four minutes from time, neatly firing home from 12 yards to earn us a valuable 2-1 win.

Our next game was a tricky away match with Vitoria, one of the most inconsistent teams in the league. Some days they could play spellbinding football and on others they would play dismally against relegation strugglers. Today they were in a fiery mood and tested us from the earliest opportunities. However it was Wellington that found the breakthrough, he was allowed into too much space and he is so clinical in one-on-one situations and he finished brilliantly to give us an early lead. But then the tables were turned. Youngster Jorge was given a first start on the right wing in place of the injured Juan Guillermo Pinzon. But it was a day to remember as he was sent off after 20 minutes for a alleged elbow to the face of Moreno. Vitoria really worked the extra space well and were soon rewarded with an equaliser, William heading in directly from a corner. In the second half Vitoria managed to take the lead, Alecsandro pouncing on a re-bound to fire it in for 2-1 to the home side. Suddenly we found ourselves trying to salvage a point from the game as we poured forward for an equaliser. It thankfully came but barely ten minutes before full time, once again Wellington saved the day as he jinked past one defender before firing it home for 2-2, a splendid strike that earned us a draw.

That game was followed by a comfortable 2-0 victory against Americano. The relegation strugglers put up little resistance as Whoshington and Viana were on hand to seal three points. Atletico Mineiro were the next visitors to our ground and it would prove the hardest contest of the month so far. That said, we played superbly in the first half and a goal each from Whoshington and Wellington gave us a healthy lead. In the second half Mineiro came close to grabbing a goal when Mozart had his penalty saved by Barbosa. They finally did get a goal through Andre but it was far too late and we claimed another three points.

Our next three fixtures were the most difficult of the season and the fact that they were one after the other did not help matters. Flamengo, Internacional and Corinthians had so far turned out to be our main title rivals. Flamengo in particular were looking for revenge from their defeat in the Copa Libertadores final. We suffered an early set-back as Henrique was dismissed from the field very early on. But despite this we managed to take the lead through a wonder goal from Moises. But Flamengo were stringing together some awesome football and it wasn’t long before they were level, Elias with an audacious lob of the keeper. They were soon in front, Bruno Veiga firing home seconds before the break. They added to their lead almost straight from kick off as Vinicius Pacheco scored a fabulous free kick. We hit back late on through Juliano but Junior wrapped up an impressive display, sealing a 4-2 win for Flamengo.

After that result we could ill afford any other slip ups against our other title rivals. Thankfully we managed a crucial 1-0 victory against Internacional, the only goal coming from right back Para in a tense affair. We followed that up with an even more impressive victory against Corinthians. Our side were returning to the blistering form they had ended 2011 with and it showed against a strong Timão side. Pinzon and Wellington the scorers in a great 2-0 win.

The slight blip against Flamengo hadn’t damaged our ascent up the table too badly. We were now in second place just two points behind Flamengo and a point ahead of Internacional. With plenty of time left in the league, it would be an interesting season this year.

CAHA stadium to receive further expansion

4th September 2012

www.atleticoha.com.br

The Hermann Aichinger board were pleased to announce that by the end of the season, the Estadio de Baixada would receive an extra 4,000 seats to make it into a 22,000 all seater stadium. The current capacity is 18,000, including a terraced section of 3,000, but due to high demand for tickets, the board of directors have gone ahead with planning to install seating in the terraces and install a second tier of seating on the south stand. The reigning Copa Libertadores winners will look to benefit from the higher gate receipts they will receive once construction is completed in late December.

"This is fantastic news for both the club and the fans" said chairman Wolfgang Aichinger in a club statement. "We hope to attract a few extra fans to the club and try and establish ourselves as the dominant force in South American football". Hermann Aichinger currently sit in 2nd place in the national league behind Flamengo, and after triumphing in the Copa Libertadores they will certainly be looking for their first league title before jetting off to Japan to compete in the World Club Championships.

Wolfgang was running out of ideas. To stage a plan on such an audacious scope of this was near impossible, he had to find a suitable reason for getting near these people. It was proving frustrating as although he was talented at devising ingenious plans, he had limited resources and pretty much no-one to get advice from. Sat at his desk, he poured himself another whiskey, the fiery liquid was giving him a headache rather than clearing his mind.

The NPD were now a massive organisation and what could he, one man, do to stop them? At this precise moment it seemed that there was absolutely nothing in his power that he could do to finally exact his revenge. But then again as he thought about it, it wasn't about personal revenge anymore. It went further than that. Maybe he could just let it all go? It was unlikely that they would ever return to Brazilian shores again, at least not in a very long time and almost certainly not in Wolfgang's lifetime.

Wolfgang's thoughts were suddenly punctured by the shrill ring of his office telephone, snapping out of his day-dream he allowed the phone to ring a few times before picking the receiver. A deep voice resonated out of the receiver, every now and then stopping to allow Wolfgang to nod or mumble confirmation of his understanding. This was a new voice and a new and possibly dangerous acquaintance. The conversation lasted a full twenty minutes with the mystery caller doing most of the talking before finally hanging up. Wolfgang slowly replaced the receiver, his mind buzzing full of new possibilities and thoughts. He relaxed back in his chair.

Before long he picked the phone up and hit a speed dial button. A few seconds later he was through.

"Yeah it's me. Come by my office tomorrow, there are some new developments."

September 2012

The months kept ticking away and before we knew it, we were entering the beginnings of the business end of the season, still in second place behind Flamengo. But finally we were able to take the lead in the table after our next match against Coritiba. High on confidence after wins over Inter and Corinthians, we keenly displayed our dominance once again. Pablo Correa netted a brace with Wellington also chipping in with a goal. Keirrison bagged a late consolation goal but it was far too late as we claimed an encouraging 3-1 victory. Defeat for Flamengo meant that we now topped the league.

The next game proved to be one of the toughest of the season, away to reigning champions São Paulo. The champions were gradually falling away from the title race but a win against us would certainly put the belief back into their team. They started brightly and were soon in front thanks to Fernandinho. It took a lot of effort from the players to find an equaliser and it finally came with barely 10 minutes left. A penalty taken by midfield dynamo João Paulo levelled the score and the game finished 1-1. We retained top spot but Flamengo were breathing down our necks, just a point behind.

Thankfully we got back on track in the next game and in emphatic style. Vasco were the visitors and they were treated to an utter thrashing at the hands of my strongest XI. Wellington was once again in lethal form and weighed in with two goals. Fagner Galvão added another stunning strike to his season tally, plus goals from Correa and Juan Pinzon sealed a 5-0 win that Vasco were thankfully it wasn't 7 or 8 in the end. A nice addition to our goal difference.

Nobody could have forseen what would happen in the next game as we travelled to Rio de Janeiro. Botafogo were expected to crumple under the pressure but in fact they did the opposite, scoring with hardly 3 minutes on the clock, Erandir with a cheeky back-heeled flick past Barbosa. We came so close to an equaliser and had the ball in the back of the net twice, only for off-side decisions to go against us. Then Diego Paulista got the killer goal totally against the run of play. It condemned us to a 2-0 defeat and we went back down into second.

But we responded in the best way possible against Atletico Paranaense. Somewhat unbeliveably goals from Moises, Correa and a brace from Whoshington had us 4-0 to the good at half time. From then we took our foot off the gas assuming to have a victory wrapped up. Youngster Augusto hit back with a goal but it was too tall an order for Atletico P.R. as we won 4-1. We signed off for September with a 3-1 victory against league newcomers Nautico. The plucky Recife side had snatched a shock win in the corresponding fixture but two goals from Pablo Correa and an own goal courtesy of Luciano were enough to render Rafael Moura's goal insignificant as we cruised to a comfortable win. So we ended September top by just a point and with just over two months to go, it was still a close contest with six teams in with a title shot (Us, Flamengo, Corinthians, Inter, São Paulo and Fluminense).
