Following the resignation of Sir Alex Ferguson so he could spend time pursuing other interests, David Gill and The Glaziers, already knowing the severity of the clubs debt, decide to put into plan a revolutionary experimental recruitment drive for Sir Alex's successor.

They were not looking for a great ex-professional to take the reigns at Old Trafford but instead they wanted an avid student of the game who loved football not for its money or glamour, but its fans and its tactical splendor, the freedom to mould a brain child into success.....

11th July first pre-season freindly against Pompey away and James Clements looks as calm as anyone. Fratton Park is a-buzz with the big boys coming to town. Its 3pm, a mild summer afternoon on the south coast.

Starting Line up: Van Der Sar, Fabio, Evra, Vidic, Evans, Carrick, Fletcher, Scholes, Giggs, Nani, Rooney

12 minutes in, Rooney Collects from deep and distributes in from flank to flank to the onrushing Nani, Nani lays it off to scholes who takes a moment to assess the play and slots Giggs in with a typical Scholes through ball for Giggs to place the ball past the helpless Jamie Ashdown, This could be a long afternoon........ 1-0 United

24 minutes, Ryan Giggs is rolling back the years skinning two Pompey players before sensibly playing the ball back to Evra, He then takes on 17 year old Peter Gregory who wasnt going to have a chance against the over lapping French international before lofting the ball into the goalkeepers path, but before Ashdown had a chance to plant his feet Vidic of all people ghosted in at the near post to make in 2-0 this afternoon.

32 minutes, Ryan Giggs Stands over a free kick midway down the pompy left flank, he whips it all the way over to the back post, Vidic leaping majestically to beat the helpless Ashdown for a second time, 3-0

42 Minutes, Its all MUFC so far, Pompey's best chance came when Ibrahim Sonko rose above Jonny Evans to head comfortably into the waiting hands of evergreen Van Der Sar

Half time Man Utd are in cruise control with Giggs and Vidic in particularly impressing, Man Utd OFF; Scholes, Giggs, Rooney, Nani, Fabio. Man Utd ON; Berbatov, Owen, Chicharito, O'Shea, Valencia

51 Minutes, Fletcher to Valencia and he recieves it back, then gives it to Carrick advancing who plays in Owen clean through to slot it in but was slightly offside when he made the run, Man Utd still in Cruise Control

62 Minutes, Still no sign of a Pompey rescue operation, Evra plays it down the line to Owen, he cuts inside to let Valencia set his sights, instead he gives it to Fletcher in acres of space on the edge of the D, the ball thunders off the crossbar in front of 400 Travelling Man Utd fans and goes over for a goal kick, the Stretford End Boys sound theyre appriciation.

80 Minutes, Man Utd have been teasing Pompey all afternoon keeping the ball in impeccable fashion, Vidic denied his Hat trick when his Header was tipped onto the bar by replacment Goalie Flavahan.

Full time, Pompey have been dominated from start to finish, Maybe this will relieve some of the pressure on James Clements after such a dominant performance.

Stand out performers; Vidic, Evra, Giggs

Owen and Berba didnt have a good game because Clements played them wider than theyre used to but he did this just for match fitness

Attendance: 19,468
