Fools Go Russian In

From the Diary of Yuri Djerkinov

Friday November 23rd, 2007

What a whirlwind few days it has been since I received an unexpected telephone call from the Russian FA. For a patriot who loves Mother Russia as much as I do it was not a difficult decision to accept the job but it was far from easy to walk away from Spartak as I had grown to love the club in my short time there. However it was made somewhat easier by the fact that I had been less closely involved since my “illness†and I was sure that the Board would appoint Ludek as my successor. Imagine my surprise when he was overlooked in favour of former Romanian international Marius Lacatus, a man with no real managerial track record. But I had to put thoughts of Spartak to one side and focus on the task at hand – upholding the honour of the Rodina.

Spartak Out Of Russian Cup

Recently crowned Premiership champions Spartak Moscow were surprisingly eliminated from the Kubok Rossi by Rubin. 2-1 scorelines in favour of the home side in each of the 7th Round legs saw the game end 3-3 on aggregate but Rubin triumphed in the penalty shootout. It has not been the best of starts for new Spartak boss Marius Lacatus after he was surprisingly appointed ahead of Ludek Miklosko who had been a key member of Yuri Djerkinov’s backroon staff. There are already murmurings of discontent amongst a section of the Spartak fans who had been keen to see the former Czech international installed as the number one.

World Cup Groups Drawn

With the draw now complete for the World Cup 2010 qualifying groups Russia have been given a fairly decent draw having been placed in group 7 alongside the Czech Republic, Romania, Moldova, Albania and Northern Ireland. National manager Yuri Djerkinov declared himself satisfied with the draw, stating that he anticipated his team battling it out with the Czechs for top spot in the group but he was quick to point out that Romania would also expect to be amongst the challengers. The qualifying campaign does not commence until September of next year so the new coach will have a long time to wait until his team sees action. A friendly at home to the United Arab Emirates has been pencilled in for early February but there are no further warm-up matches scheduled by the Russian FA.

Spartak Top UEFA Cup Group

An excellent 1-0 win in Sevilla ensured that defending champions Spartak Moscow took their place in the 1st Knockout Round of the UEFA Cup. Pavel Pogrebnyak scored the only goal of the game in the 37th minute and his teammates defended their lead stoutly to remain unbeaten in the group and finish in 1st place. Despite the defeat the Spaniards also qualified, just finishing above Norwich who were leapfrogged by Dinamo Kiev after their 1-0 defeat at home in their final group match.

Djerkinov Off To Winning Start

Despite having his preparations disrupted by the withdrawal through injury of several key players including Alexandr Kerzhakov, Andrey Arshavin, Marat Izmailov and Gennady Nizhegorodov, new National Coach Yuri Djerkinov saw his side run out comfortable winners in their friendly at home to the U.A.E. Spartak Moscow striker Pavel Pogrebnyak celebrated his second full cap with two goals in the opening 30 minutes. The first came with less than five minutes played, the 24-year-old firing home a powerful free kick from the edge of the area. The second followed half an hour later after Sergey Semak and Dmitry Sychev combined to create the opening. The home side dominated proceedings throughout and the only complaint that the new manager could have was their failure to turn possession and chances into goals. The visitors failed to muster a single scoring effort all evening

Spartak Crushed In Spain

Defending champions Spartak Moscow suffered a humiliating 5-0 defeat at Sevilla in the 1st Knockout Round of the UEFA Cup and their hopes of retaining the trophy now lie in tatters. A shockingly inept defensive performance saw them four goals down at the break and although they improved slightly in the second period they still conceded a further goal. Two of the home side’s goals came from the penalty spot but new manager Marius Lacatus offered no excuses for his team’s awful performance. Having emerged from their group unbeaten they had faced the same Sevilla team during qualification, securing a 1-0 win in Spain so the result was even more puzzling to their fans. The evening also saw Lokomotiv Moscow suffer an identical scoreline at Galatasaray and the chances of having any Russian representatives in the next round now seem remote.

CSKA On The Brink

The irony of CSKA being drawn against Chelsea in the 1st knockout phase of the Champions League was not lost on either set of supporters as both teams been bankrolled by the late Roman Abramovich. But it was the English fans that ended the evening in jubilant mood having watched their side demolish the visitors and establish a 4-1 lead to take to Moscow. Argentinean hotshot Javier Saviola started the rout in the first minute and fellow countryman Aldo Duscher struck again midway through the half. Elvir Rahimic gave CSKA hope when he reduced the deficit before half time but goals in the second period from Jonathan Woodgate and Pablo Aimar completed an emphatic victory for the Blues.

CSKA Lift Superkubok

CSKA Moscow gained the upper hand over rivals Spartak in the showpiece Superkubok, running out 2-1 winners in a broadly disappointing game. The early loss of centre back Nemanja Vidic seemed to disrupt Spartak and they fell behind midway through the first half when Sergiy Symonenko was first to a corner. Young Colombian star Freddy Guarin evened the game on 34 minutes to establish parity at the break but CSKA struck early in the second half through experienced striker Dmitry Kirichenko. That proved to be the winning goal as Valery Gazzaev’s side hung on to take their first trophy of the season. With both sides expected to be strong title challengers this season it was perhaps surprising that neither team produced much attacking quality and both managers will be looking for more over the coming months.

Close But No Cigar

A brave display by CSKA saw them come close to overturning Chelsea’s 4-1 lead in the 2nd leg of their Champions League tie but a 2-0 win on the night left the Moscow side a goal short of their target. Both sides started brightly with the visitors showing every intent of securing an away goal that would surely seal the tie. But Andrey Arshavin broke the deadlock after 20 minutes when he outpaced the Chelsea defence to slip the ball past the advancing keeper. With play very evenly balanced the home side had goalie Igor Akinfeev to thank for keeping them in front with some fine saves. Vagner Love gave the CSKA faithful real hope of an upset with 25 minutes remaining when he pounced on a rebound to tap the ball home. Despite some increasingly desperate attacking that left them exposed on the break on several occasions they were unable to find the elusive third goal that would have turned the tie around.

From the Diary of Yuri Djerkinov

Friday March 28th, 2008

Well, International management is certainly very different from working at a club, that is for sure. The thing that I miss most is not having day to day involvement with the players and that is proving to be harder to cope with than I had imagined when I took on the job. I also miss not being involved in preparing for a game every week. Of course I spend much of my time watching matches, talking to other managers and coaches and generally keeping an eye on as many Russian players as possible but I am still left with more time on my hands than I would wish for. It gives me too much time to think back on the last few years and all of the turmoil and upset, and each time I do that I sink closer to seeking comfort with my old friend the Wodka bottle.

Forty And Counting

A 1-1 draw at home to mid-table Rostov saw Spartak Moscow reach the landmark of 40 unbeaten games in the Prem’er-Liga, a record stretching back to March of last year. The home side took the lead after just five minutes when Pavel Pogrebnyak flicked a near-post corner past a stranded keeper. Despite creating a number of good chances Spartak failed to make the most of their domination and were pegged back minutes before the break, Nikola Nikezic finishing well from the edge of the area to score his first goal of the season. The game was more even after the interval but neither were able to find a moment of inspiration to break the deadlock and Spartak remain second on goal difference behind local rivals Lokomotiv.

UEFA Cup Borefest

After a gap of almost 30 years Newcastle United lifted the UEFA Cup for the second time in their history with a narrow 1-0 win over Sevilla. An almost totally sterile encounter was settled five minutes before half time by England international Jermaine Jenas. The midfielder timed his run into the Sevilla penalty area to perfection to head home what proved to be the winning goal. A sellout crowd at the Westfalenstadion in Dortmund endured a terminally dull 90 minutes with the English side content to sit back for most of the game and the Spaniard lacking the invention to fashion any clear-cut chances.

Arsenal In Champions League Triumph

Having lost out to Liverpool by a single point in the English Premiership, London’s Arsenal were crowned champions of Europe after a pulsating encounter with Italian giants Roma. The Bernabeu Stadium in Madrid was the scene of their triumph and an enthusiastic crowd enjoyed 90 minutes of attacking football with Arsenal emerging victorious by the odd goal in five. Roma it was that struck first however, Dutch star Arjen Robben finishing superbly after just ten minutes. By the half hour the English side were level when Freddie Ljungberg fired home through a crowd of players after a Tomas Rosicky corner caused chaos in the Roma golamouth. On the stroke of halftime the Gunners Spanish stars were to the fore, Jose Antonio Reyes crossing for Francesc Fabregas to head home. However in first half stoppage time Roma levelled when the iconic Totti freed Antonio Cassana who shrugged off a defensive challenge to power the ball home. But Arsenal would not be denied and made most of the running after the break, the winning goal coming in the 65th minute when Reyes out-jumped the Roma rearguard to score with a powerful header.

Quartet Set The Pace In Prem’er-Liga

With the league campaign suspended for the duration of the European Championships in Austria and Switzerland it promises to be an enthralling title race when action re-commences. Just two points separate the top four teams. Unsurprisingly the three previous titleholders are all in contention with Lokomotiv, CSKA and Spartak demonstrating that Moscow still dominates the domestic scene. Krylja of Samara will be hoping to maintain their challenge over the remainder of the summer but history suggests that they will do well to beat their highest ever finish of 4th in the league.

Hosts Out, Holders Go Home

With the group stages now complete in the European Championships it has been a disappointing tournament for the joint hosts as both Switzerland and Austria were eliminated without winning a single game. Holders Greece were also knocked out with Bulgaria surprise winners of a tough group that also saw Spain making an early exit. In Group D both Germany and the Czech Republic failed to progress from another difficult quartet. England and Holland both impressed with three wins out of three and Scotland made history by progressing to the knockout stage of a major tournament for the first time.

France Triumphant

Spurred on by the goals of Nicolas Anelka and Thierry Henry, a resurgent France lifted their 3rd European Championship after a comfortable 2-0 defeat of Holland in the final. Although always in control they had to wait until late in the game before Anleka gave them the lead with Henry securing the victory just two minutes later. The Arsenal pair were the top scorers in the competition as the French scored 14 goals during the tournament, conceding just three times.

Two-Horse Race For Title

With two-thirds of the season now gone the title race seems to be developing into a straight fight between CSKA and Lokomotiv. Spartak have dropped off the pace after three draws and one defeat in their last five league games and the early challenge of Krylja Sovetov has faded completely. Uralan already have one foot in the 1. Division with one of Terek, Rubin and Khabarovsk set to join them.

From the Diary of Yuri Djerkinov

Thursday August 28th, 2008

At last, nearly seven months since our last game I have announced my squad for my first competitive match in charge, a trip to Moldova for the first game in our World Cup group. I have had my 26 names pencilled in for some time now but a couple of injuries have forced some changes. One of my main concerns is the fitness of striker Alexandr Kerzhakov who is just returning from injury. I will keep him in the squad even if I start with him on the bench as he had a fine season with Stuttgart last year and is a quality goalscorer. CSKA midfielder Yury Zhirkov is definitely out, as is his teammate striker Dmitry Kirichenko but so far no one else has withdrawn.

Comfortable Start For Djerkinov

Despite the loss of top striker Alexandr Kerzhakov on the eve of the match, Yuri Djerkinov’s Russian side had little difficulty in overcoming a lacklustre Moldova. Goals from Yegor Titov and Dmitry Sychev established a comfortable lead midway through the first half. The home side made very little headway against the well-organised visitors and barely managed a shot on target all evening. Russia threatened to extend their lead on several occasions without converting any further opportunities but they will be more than happy with taking three points from their opening fixture. With the Czech Republic being held to a surprise 0-0 draw in Albania and Romania drawing 2-2 at home to Northern Ireland, the win was even more useful as it opens up an early gap between their two main rivals in the group.

Neck And Neck At The Top

With just five league games left to play the Prem’er-Liga title race could not be tighter as Lokomotiv sneak ahead of CSKA on goal difference. Defending champions Spartak have as good as conceded the title to their local rivals whilst at the bottom Rubin have given themselves some daylight and a rare win for Uralan has kept their hopes alive.

Mixed Fortunes In Europe

Only one of the four Russian contenders in the UEFA Cup have made it to the group stages, FC Moscow completing an impressive 5-2 aggregate win over AZ of Holland. Dinamo Moscow crashed out 4-1 to Schalke, Saturn lost out 4-2 to Besiktas and Krylja Sovetov were defeated 5-2 by Sparta Prague. The Champions League looks more hopeful with CSKA topping their group after an impressive 4-1 win at home to Feyenoord followed by a goalless draw at Milan. Spartak bounced back from a horrendous 6-0 hammering at Arsenal in their first group match to gain a narrow 1-0 win at home to Celtic to give themselves some hope.

Czechs Stunned As Russia Score Four

A superb performance by Russia in Prague this evening resulted in a wonderful 4-0 win that maintains their excellent start to their World Cup qualifying campaign. As a relatively quiet first half was coming to a close Alexandr Kerzhakov gave the visitors the lead. His first effort was saved as the near post by Petr Cech but the young striker was able to prod home the lose ball to send his team into the interval with a narrow advantage. Buoyed by their good fortune, Djerkinov’s team were outstanding in the second half and on 62 minutes Dmitry Sychev smashed the ball home from the edge of the area after some fine build-up play by Igor Semshov. The CSKA midfielder scored the third himself less than ten minutes later and a wonderful win was tied up minutes from time when the unfortunate Zdenek Grygera prodded the ball past his own keeper. This result leaves the Czech Republic’s hopes in tatters and they have an awful lot of ground to make up if they are to secure qualification. In the other group games Romania were held to a 1-1 draw in Albania and Northern Ireland had a good 1-0 win in Moldova.

Early Shock No Problem For Russia

The stadium clock showed just 25 seconds when Albania shocked Yuri Djerkinov’s side as striker Arber Abilaliaj let fly from fully 35 yards out to score a spectacular opener for the visitors. Vyacheslav Malafeev was left helpless as the ball arrowed into the top corner and the enthusiastic crowd was stunned into silence. But Russia began to play their way back into the game and on 20 minutes Dmitry Sychev squared the game when he controlled a long cross from Marat Izmailov to fire home. On the stroke of half time Sergey Semak gave the home side the with lead with a neat turn and shot from near the penalty spot. The win was wrapped up ten minutes from time when substitute Dmitry Bulykin converted a spot kick awarded after Igor Semshov was bundled over in the box. Wins for the Czech Republic and Romania got their respective campaigns back on track but with three wins out of three Russia hold a useful four-point lead at the top of the group.

From the Diary of Yuri Djerkinov

Friday October 10th, 2008

A very satisfactory start to our World Cup campaign and no mistake! No one can argue with three wins out of three with 9 goals scored and just one conceded. I am more than happy with our attacking options as we have some excellent strikers to choose from and our midfield has options too. We are less well served in defence and I will be looking at my options in that area. I do miss the day-to-day involvement of working with a squad of players though and sometimes time weighs heavy on my hands. So far I have kept my promise to stay away from my old friend the Wodka but it gets more and more difficult each passing day. With the long winter break approaching and just two friendly matches scheduled before the group starts again in March it will be a challenge to fill each day. It is hard not to think back on all that has happened to me and those around me in the last few years and I am still haunted by memories of Misha, Roman and that pig Smirnoff. At least I will be able to justify some scouting trips around Europe to watch some of our overseas players but it is still a lonely existence most of the time.

Lokomotiv Regain Title

Lokomotiv Moscow came good in the final run in and pipped rivals CSKA to the Prem’er-Liga title to regain the prize that they captured two seasons ago. Two draws in their last four matches proved fatal for CSKA and saw them finish runners-up for the 3rd season in succession. Defending champions Spartak, minus iconic coach Yuri Djerkinov, finished a disappointing 3rd with too many draws spoiling their hopes of retaining the title. It was no surprise to see Uralan and SKA Khabarovsk going back from whence they came but it was another excellent season for FC Moscow who showed that last year’s 3rd place was no flash in the pan.

Spartak Snatch Champions League Place

Two wins in their final two group games saw Spartak Moscow finish above defending champions Arsenal and qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League. The Moscow club beat the Londoners 2-0 at home and then beat Celtic 1-0 in Glasgow to progress. CSKA were less fortunate and a disappointing finish to their campaign saw them end bottom of their group and miss the consolation of a UEFA Cup place.
