Spartak Get Narrow Win At Uralan

A goal from Sergey Kovalchuk early in the second half was just enough for Spartak Moscow to return from Uralan with all three points. The home side played for ten men for half the game after centre back Ivica Krizanac received a second yellow card on 41 minutes but the visitors struggled to break down a stubborn defence. The only goal came from good work down the left side by Clemente Rodríguez and Alexandr Pavlenko who combined to free Kovalchuk. The midfielder still had a lot of work to do as the angle favoured the keeper but he finished beautifully to secure three points that lift his team up to second place in the table.

Spartak Keep Pressure On

Spartak Moscow conjured up a crucial 2-0 win at home to Saturn thanks to a brace from substitute Ãkos Buzsáky to keep the pressure on leaders Lokomotiv. With 20 minutes remaining the game was still scoreless when Buzsáky broke the deadlock from close range after good work by Sergey Kovalchuk. The second came some 5 minutes later when the Hungarian fired home from the edge of the area after a corner from Maxym Kalinichenko. The top four places in the Premiership are now filled by Moscow teams as Lokomotiv, Spartak, CSKA and Dinamo all chase the title.

Titov Pulls The Strings For Spartak

A masterful midfield display by Yegor Titov provided the platform for Spartak Moscow to gain a narrow 1-0 win at Kuban. The only goal of the game came just before half time from Nikita Bazhenov, recalled to the starting eleven despite his publicly stated determination to leave the club. The $5M-rated youngster combined brilliantly with Sergey Kovalchuk to carve a hole in the home defence and he finished clinically to secure the win. With Dinamo losing 3-1 at home to CSKA it looks like the title race is developing into a three-horse contest, although Shinnik kept their hopes alive with a 3-0 win at Rubin.

Titov The Architect Again

Yegor Titov was once again a key figure in midfield as Spartak Moscow engineered a 4-1 defeat of Auxerre to take their place in the group stages of the UEFA Cup. The 30-year-old, who has missed much of the last two seasons through injury, scored once and created the other three goals. He opened the scoring after just 7 minutes, profiting from an intelligent cutback from Tarmo Kink. The visitors squared the tie and moved ahead on away goals after 13 minutes when Benjani rose highest to a corner. The scores were still tied at the break but in the second half Titov took over. On 59 minutes he set up Kink with a delightful through-ball, in the 74th minute his layoff to Ãkos Buzsáky created the 3rd and five minutes from time another perfectly weighted pass freed Kink for his second of the game. The win sees Spartak drawn in a tough qualifying group where their opponents include AEK Athens, Galatasaray, Aston Villa and Ujpest of Hungary.

From the Diary of Yuri Djerkinov

Saturday September 30th, 2006

I am very pleased to see the team make it to the group stages of the UEFA Cup and the home defeat of Auxerre was particularly impressive. The morale in the squad has certainly improved although there are still a couple of key players that seem to be intent on leaving given the chance. We are still in the thick of the title race but our fate is not in our own hands and we are dependent on Lokomotiv dropping points along the way. Also if I look at our own form I feel that it is likely that we will have a stutter before the end of the season so I am not convinced that the title will be ours. The good news is that we will have UEFA Cup games to occupy us at least until mid-December and possibly into the new year if we can get a couple of decent results in the group. But on the injury front we have six players in the treatment room as we enter a very demanding month and I am beginning to wonder just how effective some of our Physiotherapy staff are.

Kozko Denies Spartak In Derby

Dinamo Moscow keeper Sergey Kozko produced a string of fine saves to keep city rivals Spartak at bay during their league encounter yesterday. The 31-year-old was finally beaten from the penalty spot on the hour mark, Freddy Guarín converting after Maxim Romaschenko tangled with Sergey Kovalchuk in the area. The visitors had taken the lead against the run of play on the half hour when young Portuguese striker Cicero outpaced the Spartak rearguard and scored with a first-time shot from distance. The home side had almost total dominance and on chances created should have secured a comfortable win but Kozko denied them time and again to keep his team in the game. However, a surprise 3-1 defeat for Lokomotiv at home to Saturn means that both CSKA and Spartak have made ground in the title race.

Smirnoff Appeal Goes To Duma

Lawyers representing suspected gangster and murderer Vladimir Smirnoff are fighting his extradition to the United Kingdom tooth and nail. Having successfully stalled the process for almost twelve months, their latest ploy is to petition the Duma requesting that the lower house declare the extradition request unlawful and demanding that Smirnoff is granted bail before facing trial here in Russia. The Russian authorities are growing increasingly frustrated by the lack of progress in this case and are anxious to see Smirnoff, accused of a bloody double murder in the UK, brought to justice.

Torpedo Sack Petrenko

Following their 3-0 defeat at home to city rivals Spartak, Torpedo Moscow manager Sergey Petrenko was dismissed by Chairman Vladimir Aleshin. The home side struggled all evening and failed to register a single shot on target. The impressive Yegor Titov opened the scoring inside five minutes when he fired home from the edge of the area after a quickfire passing move. Despite exerting long periods of pressure the visitors failed to add to their tally until some 20 minutes from time. Andrejs Rubins was making his 3rd appearance from the bench in as many games as he is eased back into competitive action following his injury and he was picked out by a raking diagonal pass. Controlling the ball in his stride the Latvian winger finished with a low shot just inside the post to put his side 2-0 ahead. Just minutes later the result was put beyond all doubt when Tarmo Kink jinked past two defenders and fired the ball home. With both CSKA and Lokomotiv dropping points in drawn games there is now just a single point between the top three teams.

Six Of The Best For Spartak Seconds

Spartak Moscow manager Yuri Djerkinov fielded a second string eleven for his team’s 6th round Russian Cup tie at First Division Torpedo Vladimir but they showed no mercy to their hosts, racking up a 6-goal win to ensure their progression to the next round. In a one-sided contest the Moscow side scored four times inside the first 25 minutes with Alexandr Samedov, Gabriel Tamas, Ãkos Buzsáky and Florin Soavã all getting on the scoresheet. The second period was quiet in comparison but Dmitry Alenichev and Dmytro Parfenov both found the net, the latter from the penalty spot. With the visitors also striking the woodwork three times the final score could have been even more embarrassing for the Division One strugglers.

Spartak Off To Winning Start

Spartak Moscow achieved a 2-0 win at home to Ujpest in the opening game of their UEFA Cup group last night. A dominant display saw the excellent Yegor Titov open the scoring after just 6 minutes when he fired home from some 25 yards following a corner. A host of chances were made thereafter but a combination of poor finishing and good goalkeeping meant that none of them were converted. Whilst the visitors rarely threatened to score there was still the danger of getting caught on the break as long as the score remained so close. But with 15 minutes remaining the points were secured when Nikita Bazhenov scored the second, the young striker having his first attempt saved but being able to slide the rebound home. With the top three from each group progressing to the next knockout stage Spartak probably require one further win from their three remaining games to secure further European action.

All Change But Spartak Win Again

We need to look back to late July to see Spartak Moscow last lose a game and manager Djerkinov was so confident in his squad that he felt able to rest his first choice eleven for the visit to Rotor yesterday. His bold selection paid dividends and his team were rarely troubled during an emphatic 4-0 victory, all of the goals coming in a devastating 12 minute spell in the first half. Konstantin Konoplev was the first to get on the scoresheet when he jumped highest in a crowded penalty area to head home from a corner on 20 minutes. Ãkos Buzsáky was next with a shot from outside the area after some impressive wing play from the unsettled Denis Boyarintsev. Mihajlo Pjanovic scored the 3rd when his well-timed run broke the offside trap and Dmitry Alenichev wrapped up the scoring on 32 minutes after Alexandr Samedov crossed from the right side of midfield.

Stoppage Time Winner Saves Spartak

Yuri Djerkinov continued to rest his first team players when Amkar visited Spartak last night and for much of the game it looked like he may live to regret his decision as his team struggled to get into their rhythm. Time and again their attacks floundered and the opportunities they did create were spurned as his players failed to hit the target. But as the match entered stoppage time substitute Vladimir Leshonok, who had only been on the pitch for a few moments, lined up a free kick some 20 yards out and curled it over the wall and into the top corner. The 22-year-old midfielder had been expected to miss the remainder of the season when he had to undergo surgery back in April but his recovery has been quicker than expected. The title race is still between the top three but with CSKA now having played one game more they look to be the outsiders now.

Lokomotiv Close In On Title

A 2-0 win for Lokomotiv Moscow at relegated Rotor combined with a 1-1 draw for Spartak at Shinnik has moved Valery Nenenko’s team a step closer to their first Premiership title since 2002. Lokomotiv dominated their game against the bottom club but they had to wait until the 67th minute before breaking down a stubborn defence, Dinijar Bilyaletdinov finding a yard of space in the penalty area to fire home. Ten minutes later Marat Ismailov made the game safe with a pinpoint finish from just inside the area to ensure another three points. Meanwhile Shinnik shocked Spartak by taking the lead after 20 minutes when Yury Solntsev caught the visitors napping from a quick throw in. Yegor Titov squared the contest with just over 15 minutes remaining after excellent work on the left wing by Andrejs Rubins.

I am finding it increasingly difficult to keep my mind focussed on the team after reading recently that Vladimir Smirnoff may manage to wriggle out of facing trial in the UK. Even worse, there are suggestions that the beast might even be granted bail – a terrifying thought I have to say. But for the sake of the fans and the players I must do my best to put such thoughts out of my mind and concentrate on doing my job.

Lokomotiv Crowned As Champions

A 2-0 win for Lokomotiv in a hard fought Moscow derby at home to Dinamo was good enough to give them the Premiership title for just the second time in their history. The goals came in a 5-minute spell shortly after half time. Erwin Avalos made the breakthrough by capitalising on a dreadful error by Dinamo keeper Sergey Kozko who failed to deal with an innocuous passback giving the Paraguayan striker an open goal. Kozko was also at fault for the second from Dmitry Khokhlov when he seemed to misjudge the flight of the midfielder’s shot and allowed the ball to go past him and into the net. In contrast his opposite number Sergey Ovchinnikov never put a foot wrong and his flawless display secured his 21st clean sheet of the season as well as man of the match honours. Nearest rivals Spartak conceded the title following a 1-1 draw at home to Rubin and depending on the result of their final game of the season they could even miss out on a runners-up position.

Spartak Close To Qualification

An excellent 2-0 win over AEK in Athens has taken Spartak Moscow to the brink of qualification from their UEFA Cup group. The home side enjoyed most of the possession but Spartak defended superbly and successfully hit their opponents with speedy counter-attacks. Their opening goal came from Andrejs Rubins early in the game as a result of just such a breakaway. Aided by some fine stops by keeper Dmitry Khomich the visitors repelled a series of attacks to maintain their lead until the break. On 57 minutes they doubled their advantage when Maxym Kalinichenko timed his run into the area to perfection to complete a fast break upfield. Top of the group with a 100% record, a point from their final two games will be enough to see the Moscow team progress to the next knockout phase.

Stalemate Sees Spartak End Season On A Low

A disappointing goalless draw at home to Rostov saw Spartak Moscow end the season with three successive draws with the six points dropped costing them the league title and dropping them to 3rd place in the table. CSKA ensured the runners-up slot with a 2-0 win at home to Krylja Sovetov and champions Lokomotiv bowed out with a 0-0 draw at home to Amkar. Despite setting a club-record 22-game unbeaten run, ten draws in their 30 league games proved too much of a handicap for Yuri Djerkinov’s team. Having won the Premiership title nine times in the first ten years that the division existed, they have failed to win the title since 2001 and the pressure will really be on the manager next season to end that sequence.

From the Diary of Yuri Djerkinov

Wednesday November 8th, 2006

It is with mixed feelings that I look back on this season. Our form improved dramatically in the latter half, to such an extent that we have established a superb unbeaten run. Sadly, closing the season with three successive draws cost us the title and that is a huge disappointment. The overall morale in the squad is much better and we now have most of our long-term injuries cleared up. Our progress in Europe has been encouraging but that does give us the problem that we have to keep the squad together for longer than usual moving into the winter. There have been a number of players worthy of note and perhaps top of the list is Yegor Titov who has been in terrific form since his return to the team. Other top performers include midfielders Maxym Kalinichenko and Ãkos Buzsáky and defenders Clemente Rodríguez, Nemanja Vidic and Adrian Iencsi. Our defensive record was the second best in the division but we lacked a consistent goalscorer, our top marksman being midfielder Sergey Kovalchuk.

Russian Cup Roundup

The 6th round of the Russian Cup went very much to form with almost all of the Premiership sides coming through their 2nd legs with aggregate victories. The only exception was Dinamo Moscow who were eliminated by First Division Alania on penalties after both legs finished as 1-1 draws. Spartak racked up an 11-0 aggregate win over relegated Torpedo Vladimir, Lokomotiv beat Arsenal Tula 4-1 and CSKA overcame Chkalovets-1936 4-0.

Stalemate Suits Spartak

Spartak Moscow had every reason to be pleased with their goalless draw at home to Aston Villa as the point gained was sufficient to ensure their qualification from their UEFA Cup group. Indeed had the home side shown a little more composure in front of goal then they could easily have won the game as their English visitors showed little attacking threat. Leo Franco in the Villa goal was by far the busier of the two keepers and he made some smart stops to keep the match square. Spartak will be grateful that they are not depending on getting a result from their final group game at Galatasaray as the atmosphere in Istanbul is sure to be hostile with the volatile Turkish determined to intimidate the opposition at every opportunity.

Stamford Bridge Slayer To Face Trial In Britain

After more than a year of legal wrangling the Russian authorities have finally decided on the fate of the Ukrainian gangster suspected of the vicious murder of two members of the Chelsea backroom staff last summer. Vladimir “The Impaler†Smirnoff, as he is known amongst the Russian mafia, will be extradited to the UK to face trial at the Old Bailey. He is expected to leave Russia early in the New Year and his trial should begin within days of his return to this country.

Khomic The Hero In Penalty Shootout

Having given themselves a mountain to climb in the 1st leg of their Russian Cup tie with Uralan, Spartak Moscow took less than two minutes to cut their deficit in half when Nikita Bazhenov found a yard of space in the box to open the scoring. The visitors dug in for the remainder of the half but were subjected to such constant pressure as the home side tried to recover the tie that they rarely ventured beyond their own halfway line. The aggregate scores were tied on 55 minutes when Adrian Iencsi converted from the penalty spot after Sergey Kovalchuk was upended. Despite making several further scoring opportunities Spartak were unable to find a winning goal in regulation time and the teams entered the lottery of a penalty shootout. But with Dmitry Khomich saving two of Uralan’s first three attempts and the home side’s four successful kicks ensured a place in the Quarter Finals where they will face Rubin.

Spartak Snap Up Young Striker

Yesterday Spartak Moscow announced the signing of 18-year-old striker Denis Tkachenko from First Division Alania. The teenager joined for an undisclosed fee but sources close to the club indicate that after weeks of negotiation the sum involved is believed to be close to $500K. In his first season in senior football the striker showed little to suggest that he was worth a fee of that magnitude but the Spartak scouting operation have clearly seen some potential and with both Nikita Bazhenov and Mihajlo Pjanovic seemingly set on leaving the club the young Russian has presumably been brought in as a long-term investment.

Spartak Sign Off With Win In Istanbul

Spartak Moscow closed out the group stages of their UEFA Cup campaign with an impressive 3-0 defeat of Galatasaray last night. The visitors made light of a partisan crowd to put in a fine performance and the victory ensured that they topped their group and took their place in the next phase of knockout matches. A penalty from young Colombian midfielder Freddy Guarín gave them the lead with ten minutes of the first half remaining and silenced the home support. Unsettled striker Nikita Bazhenov doubled their advantage on the hour and minutes later the referee awarded Spartak a second spot kick after Andrejs Rubins was tripped in the area. Romanian centre back Adrian Iencsi took responsibility this time and calmly tucked the penalty away. The defeat meant that the Turks missed out on qualification with AEK squeezing through on goal difference. An excellent 2-0 win at home to Liverpool saw Lokomotiv Moscow join their neighbours in the next phase but Shinnik were eliminated after a poor 4-0 defeat at eventual group winners Gaziantepspor.

Spartak To Face Turkish Opposition In Europe

Having had a fine win on Turkish soil in their last UEFA Cup group match, Spartak Moscow will face another trip to that country after drawing Trabzonspor in the 1st knockout Round. The first leg will be played in Turkey in mid-February and should they triumph over the two legs they will face either Atletico Madrid or Lazio in the next round.

Thanks Tanel, as always your support is appreciated.

From the Diary of Yuri Djerkinov

Sunday December 17th, 2006

At last I can let the players take some time off to recharge their batteries over the winter, but with UEFA Cup action re-commencing in February it will be a much shorter layoff than they are used to. But there will be little rest for the scouting staff as I am keen to bring some new faces in for next season. The Board have cut back our transfer funds and have expressed their concern over our wage bill, looking for me to make a saving of at least $25K a week. On a positive note the planned upgrade of the training facilities has been completed and we now have an impressive indoor facility that we can use year-round that will protect us from the worst of the Russian winter weather.

Djerkinov Voted Manager Of The Year

Spartak Moscow manager Yuri Djerkinov was voted the Russian Manager of the Year in the annual New Years Day awards yesterday. Despite his team only managing a 3rd place finish in the Premiership the former Chelsea supremo beat off the challenge of his peers to lift the trophy. Striker Alexandr Kerzhakov of Hannover 96 picked up the Russian Player of the Year trophy after a productive season in the Bundesliga and Alexandr Zenov of Krylja Sovetov won the Young Players equivalent.

Stamford Bridge Slayer In Dramatic Escape

Within hours of touching down at Heathrow airport on his way to face justice for the Stamford Bridge Slayings, Russian mafia boss Vlad “The Impaler†Smirnoff made a dramatic escape from police custody. Having been whisked through the airport, bypassing the normal customs and immigration checks, he was being transported to London in an unmarked police car. In what was clearly a pre-planned operation, eyewitnesses described seeing two dark coloured Range Rovers force the vehicle off the road. The unarmed officers were quickly overpowered and Smirnoff sprung from custody, being driven off at high speed in one of the Range Rovers. Both cars were later found abandoned in Southwark and the occupants seem to have made a clean getaway. Police describe the men involved as “armed and extremely dangerous†and have warned the public to report anything suspicious but on no account to approach anyone that they suspect.

What a nightmare – I have just heard that Smirnoff has escaped police custody in England! I cannot imagine what he will do next but I am fairly certain that he will do everything that he can to silence both Mr. Abramovich and myself as our testimony will be key to his conviction. When he gave me the bad news Colonel Palichenko assured me that the authorities would be on the lookout for him returning to Russia. The FSB are speculating that Smirnoff will get out of the UK as fast as possible and go undercover in some other country, possibly the Balkans due to the contacts that he has amongst the gangster community there. They are sure that he will keep a low profile and be more concerned with avoiding recapture rather than wreaking some sort of revenge. I certainly hope that they are correct!

Having given the players a little time off over the winter we are now back in full training and hoping to extend our UEFA Cup run. We played a couple of warm-up games at home to Swedish opposition and the fitness levels of the players is not too bad. We have made no significant signings in the off-season but I have been very impressed with some of the recent Youth Academy graduates. We did release a number along with some other youngsters who were not working out but we still have over 50 players registered. It does look like some of the senior players will be departing though. Full back Martin Jiranek has stated his intention to leave when his contract expires at the end of the year and Nikita Bazhenov seems determined to move on as well. I am doing my best to forget about Smirnoff and focus on getting the best out of the team. But I confess that many a night I am sorely tempted to quell my restless thoughts through the comfort of a good bottle of Wodka!

Late Goal Gives Spartak The Edge

The 1st leg of the UEFA Cup tie between Spartak and Trabzonspor looked to be heading for a goalless conclusion when Maxym Kalinichenko ghosted into the area to score a stoppage-time goal that gives the Moscow side an away-goal advantage for the return leg. The home side played aggressive attacking football but were too often let down by some wayward finishing and Spartak had to endure some extended periods of pressure. But they too were positive in their approach and mounted some effective attacks of their own. Their defence was superbly marshalled by captain Nemanja Vidic and held firm for the entire game. They can now look forward to the home game next week with confidence, knowing that a similar defensive display will win them the tie.

Titov Double Sends Spartak Through

Two goals from an inspirational Yegor Titov ensured that Spartak Moscow progressed to the 2nd knockout round of the UEFA Cup. The 30-year-old midfielder scored his first on 25 minutes, showing consummate technique to volley home a corner from Andrejs Rubins. Up to that point the visitors had looked the most likely to score as they threatened with a series of early attacks but, as in the first leg, they suffered from a lack of composure in front of goal. Titov’s second came shortly before half time and once again Rubins was the provider, his pinpoint cross being headed home. With Spartak now holding a 3-0 aggregate lead there looked to be no way back for the visitors although they battled gamely for the remainder of the match. Spartak will now face Lazio in the next round after the Italians produced an impressive 4-1 win at home to Atletico Madrid and this will represent a huge challenge to Djerkinov and his team.

CSKA Lift Super Cup

The first trophy of the domestic season was decided yesterday with Cup holders CSKA coming from behind to defeat league champions Lokomotiv 3-2 in a thrilling encounter. Lokomotiv raced into a two-goal lead inside 20 minutes through Dmitry Sychev and Igor Lebedenko. They retained their lead until the break but as the second half progressed CSKA began to exert more and more pressure. Striker Dmitry Kirichenko scored twice in two minutes to square the game, his first coming on 77 minutes and his second on 79. Then in the 83rd minute Andrey Arshavin scored the winner to complete a memorable comeback.

Lazio Humbled

Spartak Moscow put themselves in prime position to move into the next round of the UEFA Cup with a superb 4-0 win over Lazio in their home leg. Maxym Kalinichenko opened the scoring after quarter of an hour with a fine header from a cross by Sergey Kovalchuk. The visitors responded with a series of attacks but their finishing let them down and there was no further scoring in the first half. Spartak made two changes during the break – Tarmo Kink replacing Mihajlo Pjanovic and Alexandr Pavlenko coming on for a disappointing Andrejs Rubins – and the impact was immediate. Kink doubled their lead after an hour when he ran on to a perfectly waited long ball from Adrian Iencsi and the Romanian centre back added the 3rd from the penalty spot ten minutes later. The victory was completed five minutes from time when Kink scored his second, muscling Yegor Titov aside to power home a header.
