The Challenge Of The Ages

"You win nothing with kids" - Alan Hansen

"If they're good enough, they're old enough" – Bill Shankley

Two alternative viewpoints regarding the merits of youth but yours is a team of fearless youngsters with their boundless energy and enthusiasm. The objective is to take charge at any club in any country, as long as they are in the lowest playable league within that country. And then, guide your team to the pinnacle of domestic success by securing the title in the top-flight league of your chosen country. If you can win some other silverware along the way then more power to your elbow, but the priority is that Premiership/First Division crown.

However, restrictions apply.

The Path Of Youth

None of the players in your first team squad may be over the age of 24. Any over-age players must be moved to the reserves and made available for transfer. Once a younger player reaches the cut-off age of 25 then he too must be moved and listed. You may sign up to three players each season for a fee but you are allowed an unlimited number of free signings and loans. Any players signed must be 24 or under. Graduates from your Youth Academy do not need to be moved to the first team straight away but can be kept in the reserves for as long as you see fit.

This will be my first Challenge attempt and an older one at that. Edited to increase the youth facilities and youth training/development.

Mathsson Jailed

IFK Värnamo Chairman Thomas Mathsson was last night jailed. Mathsson, 54 is the son of famous Swedish furniture designer and architect Bruno Mathsson. Going against the family tradition of carpentry, Mathsson was an entrepeneur, his latest foray, football. He completed his takeover of the Swedish Second Division South Gotaland side, IFK Värnamo some three years ago now from Kaj Larsson and had ploughed money into developing the clubs youth academy and training facilties.

Upon his arrest, he uttered the words, "But what about the Lisbon Lions Challenge?" to the officers, a clear sign of his deteriorating mental state and followed that outburst up with, "I need to dominate Sweden, Europe and the World by grooming these kids."

'Grooming these kids' he was, which will score Mathsson between fifteen and twenty years in prison.

Larsson Resumes Control

IFK Värnamo has returned to the hands of former Chairman Kaj Larsson after Thomas Mathsson's reign over terror came to an abrupt end three months ago. Larsson had previously sold the club to Andersson but resumes control of the club with it in a much worse state of affairs.

Manager Jozo Matovac and all his backroom staff left along with the whole first team squad and all youth players assembled for this proposed great new project that Mathsson had lined up. Värnamo fans will be looking for Larsson to get the club back on track and put the recent indiscretions behind them as they look to recruit a new manager and a whole new team.

Larsson did speak to us earlier and was positive about the future at Finnvedsvalen.

"What we must do now is build on what is in place, we can't look a gift-horse in the mouth. Although the beginnings of this has been shrowded in controversy, that is now over and I can assure everyone that we have the capabilities and in time will produce crops of fine young footballs that I hope can go on and represent Sweden."

Some ambitous words from Larsson, but firstly the club have to look for a suitable manager who can rebuild a side and maintain their status in the third tier of Swedish football.

The first task was to appoint some backroom staff and Englishman Rob Campkin was an easy find as a scout, Jan Ferner joined as my assistant manager, whilst 29-year-old Mikael Sjökvist, Henrik Nilsson, 32 and the elder statesman Ronny Hägglund at 42 formed my coaching unit. Tony Samuelsson was appointed as the club physio.

The moves in the transfer market were a lot slower though with targets having to be identified and scouted. With the first friendly the day after I arrived, we fielded a team full of locals with the hope that some may impress enough to earn a contract. 114 people turned out to watch us lose 1-0 to non-league Holmalund. We cancelled our second friendly due to the lack of players to field but shortly after, players started to arrive, mostly on loan though and mostly attacking players.

We had eight players signed, six on loan when Second Division West Gotaland side Gunnilse IS came to Finnvedsvalen, 98 joined to watch a 2-1 defeat. On loan Öster striker Patrik Vieweg neatly tucked away the last goal of the game. The squad gradually increased and we took 18 players on trial, for the visit of non-league Älmhult, Andreas Löttiger at right-back was the only non-trialist to start, he on loan from Färjestaden. There was never four goals between us, but that was the margin by which we beat them, several players performing well enough to earn contracts.

By our fourth friendly, a visit from promotion contenders Qviding of the West Gotaland Second Division, we boasted a squad of 17 contracted players and 11 loan signings. We fielded a side solely of contracted players and held our own drawing 1-1, striker Laurent Alishani equalising with the aid of a deflection. Short on defenders, sod deemed it necessary to injure our best, not only injure but to tear his achilles tendon, 15-year-old Martin Maletic would be sidelined for three months, with the season only five months long. It only served to hamper the development of Maletic as he is too young to play anyway, so the priority will be to get him back fit and some friendlies under his belt for the second season.

We added six new players before Nybro IF of the Middle Gotaland of the Second Division came a-calling including Jörgen Hellqvist on a free transfer from Hovslätt, for whom we have high hopes. In front of 56 people we lost 1-0 to the promotion contenders experimenting with fielding a three-pronged attack. Our final friendly saw us travel to Skärhamn of the West Gotland and when 'keeper Niklas Gill, on-loan from Öster was sent off just after half-time we were almost pleased with just a 1-0 defeat.

With the transfer window closed, at least until the summer months we would enter the season with 37 players on our roster, 26 permanent and 11 in on loan. Three players will join us on free transfers at the start of July, a fifteen year old and two sixteen year olds.

Editors Note: That was the first time I have ever had my goalkeeper sent off in FM, so it was almost a privilege.

vs Floda BoIF in the Swedish Cup 1st Round

Despite being a non-league outfit, Floda had players that would be first choice at Finnvedsvalen but we set about them and Pettersson denied Svensson, Neric and Hellqvist. From there began a running battle between Hellqvist and 'keeper Pettersson. It seemed only a matter of time before the breakthrough would come and come it did, Jörgen Hellqvist evading his marker to head in Niclas Svensson's free-kick. The lead lasted just four minutes though as Nikkilä rose above Sebastian Haralsson, on loan from Öster, to head passed Niklas Gill, also on loan from the First Division Elite club. Hellqvist and Pettersson resumed their duel with the goalkeeper coming out on top making several saves to force the game into extra-time.

Just before half-time in extra-time, Hellqvist scored the winner, claiming victory over Pettersson. The striker turned his man on the halfway line, outpaced the remaining defence and hit a quick shot, low but not quite so hard across Pettersson, which took him by surprise but still the keeper will be disappointed to have conceded. We lost midfielder Erik Löhman to a twisted ankle just before half-time and he will miss a months worth of football. Our reward was a home tie against Premier Division league leaders Djurgården in early May.

vs Laholm FK in the Swedish Second Division South Gotaland (unless stated)

We were made clear favourites for our first league match, which was slightly daunting as I was still unsure as to how good a side we were. We made changes from the Cup game as extra-time had drained certain players. Despite leading by a goal at half-time I saw nothing that justified us being made favourites and the second half didn't provide any further inclinations. Both centre backs contributed to Laholm's first goal, Niclas Svensson clearing in haste under no pressure to no one and Jonas Borgman lost his man, Gustafsson on the return and we were a goal down. We instantly hit back, a soft penalty allowed Fredrik Fendrich to coolly chip over Johansson. The third goal in seven minutes arrived from the head of Borgman, attoning for his earlier error heading in fellow central defender Svensson's corner at the back post.

Thirty seconds into the second half we looked like we might actually be worthy of a lead, Jörgen Hellqvist tapping in his third of the season. Zahorovic's cross found Ferizi in space and his shot was parried by Johansson but Hellqvist was Johnny-on-the-spot. We sealed the game in injury time but not before our defence evaporated, Asp allowing runners in and Caster accepted the gift presented to him by Gill spilling Genberg's cross. Substitute striker Patrik Vieweg on loan from Öster showed his strength and pace to hold off two defenders and emphatically smash home in the first minute of added time.

at Ängelholms FF

We were clear third favourites, after a draw, against Ängelholm, fresh from their 6-0 drubbing of Helsingborg Södra and their 5-4 Swedish Cup victory, Jonas Axeldal once of Foggia, Ipswich and Cambridge bagging five of them, clearly these boys could score. To have not conceded in the first half away to Ängelholm and create the best chance was pleasing, Fendrich squandering it. To repeat the feat in the second half was even more pleasing, sub Vieweg wasting the best chance shooting straight at Christensson. Niclas Svensson and Jonas Borgman both excelled in the centre of defence after shaky performances last week.

Ängelholm 0-0 IFK Värnamo

MOM: Niclas Svensson

We wrapped at deals to sign three players from Växjö Norra at the end of the season, having already provided us with goalkeeper Johan Danielsson and midfielder Joakim Mandelholm they were fast becoming our feeder club. Deals were also concluded for a 14-year-old, four 15-year-olds and two 16-year-olds.

vs Djurgårdens IF - Swedish Cup 2nd Round

This was going to be our biggest game of the season and we lost Jonas Borgman in the warm-up, Jimmy Persson took his place. The holders Djurgården brought their first team, clearly the Swedish took their one and only Cup competition seriously. Three goals in each half did the job for the Premier League side but we did at least manage a shot, not on target mind but a shot none the less, Hellqvist firing over from the edge of the box.

Ibrahim Ba and Kim Källström both played for Djurgårdens, as did Teddy Sheringham, on loan from Millwall in 1985. Cheers for the support, Apoorv and Minisav. Being in the lowest tier in Sweden however means that you aren't going to come across too many household names.

7th May 2005

vs IFK Hässleholm

Two pieces of idiocism or poor decision making cost us a game that neither side deserved to win. Early in the first half Sebastian Haralsson, on loan from Öster, under pressure gifted possession to a Hässleholm striker, a neat give and go and Thurban tucked away, despite the calls for an offisde flag. With time running out, Joakim Mandelholm on as a sub at left-back for the tired Tobias Englund under no pressure beat Niklas Gill attempting a backpass, twanging the post for good measure.

With Gill joining Johan Danielsson and Andreas Löfstrand, our other two 'keepers on the treatment table with a sprained wrist, we faced a race against time to have one available for our next fixture in five days time. It was though at the other end of the field where we had more pressing concerns, that making it three games in a row now without a goal.

at Kristianstads FF

None of the 'keepers made it back from injury in time and the race rolls over to the IFK Malmö in a weeks time and boy do we need on of them. This was by far our worst performance of the season thus far, local boy Johan Bengtsson beaten four times in the first half and Hellqvist blazing our best chance over one-on-one. The most disappointing thing was that we didn't make Kristianstad work for their goals either, Fendrich got turned too easily in the box from a throw for the opener and then Englund hauled down Otfors, from which Andreas Svensson netted his second. Jimmy Persson was beaten in the air for the third for Svensson's hat-trick and Otfors had two bites at the cherry to score on half-time. We were given a soft penalty in the second half with twenty minutes to play as Löttiger took a tumble allowing Fendrich to put us on the scoresheet but we offered little offensive but plenty to them.

vs IFK Malmö

Even with the return of Niklas Gill in goal and Jonas Borgman at the heart of the defence we still gave away two soft goals. We did at least offer more in the final third with a more effective offense than in previous games, with Patrik Vieweg starting up front. We allowed Shaqiri to ghost into our box from a cross to give Malmö the lead and left-back Englund got completely the wrong side of his man on a long ball forward to allow Axberg in behind to cross for a tap-in.

Right-back Samer Ali signed from FC Malmö, had an effort cleared off the line from a corner as we failed to get back into the game. Our early season optimism has now vanished as it is now one goal in five matches and that was from the penalty spot.

IFK Värnamo 0-2 IFK Malmö
