CSKA vs St Pete's Boys

Attendance: 6780

Despite having 61% possession, CSKA couldn't convert time to goals, as the boys got some measure of revenge against the club for an earlier season loss. Golo picked out a run of Nicholas and the back-on-form midfielder volleyed home an excellent winner. Goalkeeper Berberov certainly redeemed himself after some poor performances with a stellar game making several key saves and winning MOM. His fingertip save in the 90th minute was easily one of the best of the season.

The St Petersburg Dispatch

St Pete's Boys Derail 1st Place Lokomotiv

In a shockingly one-sided affair tonight at S.M. Kirov Stadium, the young squad of Dinamo St Petersburg dismantled the Lokomotiv side 4-1, ending the Moscow's club unbeaten streak at 15 games.

After a game which ultimately saw the Boys outshoot their opponents 21 to 2, pundits are left scratching their heads about both Lokomotiv, who had only dropped 5 points to this point in the season, and the home side, now fully aimed at claiming a UEFA Cup spot for 2004.

The result is all the more shocking for the absence of one of the Boys key players, Nicholas, injured and out for several more games.

With Pravaya playing as the hole man, the boys only took 5 minutes to threaten the Moscow net, Pravaya forcing a stellar save from Lokomotiv keeper Nigmatullin.

Georgikov came close in the 10th, and then hit the post in the 11th after some fancy work by Golo. After Bull went down in the area, and no penalty was given, you could see the Boys visibly fuming and the crowd could sense an upset brewing.

When Pravaya knocked down a Golo long ball for Powersov, the winger immediately put in a low cross to the far post. Georgikov got to the end of it, but covered by defensive players, he laid the ball of for an unmarked Anerdov, and the boys captain on the day hit a vicious strike for the opener.

Golo forced a good save just seconds later. The boys looked to take another bolow in the 34th, as reliable back Chrzipplerinksi had to go off injured (and will now miss about 10 days).

The rest of the first half was relatively quiet, but with some rough play from Moscow disrupting the boys.

After halftime, the boys were determined to finish off the game, and a Golo-Pravaya give and go freed up the latter and having beat a player he tucked home the 2nd.

Tonerovski hit the crossbar in the 59th from a Powersov corner, and then forced a good save just moments later.

In the ensuing corner, Pravaya got loose again and this time buried the Powersov corner for the third.

Moscow was desperate by this point, and Bull was very unlucky not to get a pk for being mauled in the box in the 65th. When Golo was hacked down in the 67th, the ref had no choice but to send off Mor.

Anderdov hit the post in the 69th, but 3 minutes later the boys went the direct route and a Berberov ball found the captain who quickly fed a rushing Pravaya. Prav tucked home his third on the day for a 4-nil lead.

Moscow scored a meaningless goal from a corner, but it was all St Petersburg. Georgikov forced a goal line clearance, Anerdov clipped the post after a long string of Dinamo passes, and Golo nearly shattered the post in the 90th with a long range bullet.

Lokomotiv were happy to get of the pitch with some measure of dignity, as any more time and the Boys might have found the threatened 5th goal.

Pravaya, hattrick on the night, won MOM, but Golo was astonishing as well, playing destroyer and creative midfielder with plenty of skill.

19-year old Garzon Moriz Abuzaglo has been called up the U-21 match vs Iceland. The striker (who also lists defender as a position, though it is unclear he has ever played there in a competitive match) is having a strong season for Dinamo St Petersburg this year, scoring 6 goals in 18 seasons. Most agree the call-up is long overdue.

The St. Petersburg Dispatch

Sunday Profile: Frustrated Nicholas

Midfielder Evanov Nicholas is seething. He's angry at referees. He's angry at the local toughs that broke into his car and stole his brand new CD player ("how will I listen to wonderful misogynist American rap now?"). He's angry that St. Pete's boys has failed to win the respect of Russian football's elite and talking heads. Most of all, he's angry that he has to sit out a month, and that he couldn't be on the pitch for St. Pete's humiliation of Lokomotiv.

"This hamstring injury is the last thing I need. I finally get back to my normal level, scoring two goals and getting rated a 10 against Sokol. I should be playing like that all the time. But now I am injured, and I can do nothing."

Most of all, Nicholas seems upset that his injured hamstring has limited his social opportunities. "How can I go to nightclubs in a wheelchair and expect to bring a girl home?"
