Kehl Swansong For United?

A brilliant display by German midfielder Sebastian Kehl was the high point of Man United’s 3-1 defeat of Blackburn. Neil Mellor scored twice courtesy of pinpoint build-up play by Kehl after Luke Chadwick had opened the scoring in the first half. But with string rumours linking the 27-year-old German with Chelsea this may have been one of his last appearances for the club.

Liverpool In Narrow Old Trafford Win

Having been a hero a few days previously, Sebastian Kehl turned villain yesterday when he received two yellow cards leaving Man United a man short against visiting Liverpool. Both teams looked decidedly tired and jaded in a contest that offered little for the packed house at Old Trafford. The game was finally settled by a goal from Julio Arca with 30 minutes remaining but with Liverpool already secured of second place in the Premiership there was nothing at stake other than pride.

Veron Stars In Final Game For United

Having just agreed a £10M move to Borrusia Munchengladbach, Saba Veron made his final appearance for Manchester United and scored once in each half to inspire his team to a 3-2 defeat of Arsenal. The 32-year-old Argentinean, capped 102 times for his country, was playing his 288th game for United and he was given a well-deserved standing ovation at the end of the game. Danny Webber scored United’s 3rd goal to give them a 3-0 lead but Arsenal, reduced to ten men when Lucas Neill was dismissed in the first half, fought back with two late goals to make the scoreline more respectable.

Kehl To Join Chelsea

Man United midfielder Sebastian Kehl has agreed a £12M move to Chelsea. Having arrived on a Bosman from Dortmund last summer he has apparently been the victim of a “Buy British†policy introduced by United after the arrival of new manager Tick Jones. The former Celtic boss was responsible for a Scots-only policy whilst at Glasgow and his approach brought the club considerable success. It now seems that the United Board are looking to implement a similar approach in Manchester and they have been gradually disposing of their foreign stars.

Season Review

Welcome to our annual roundup of the season just completed in England and around Europe. In England Manchester United came close to lifting the domestic treble, winning the League title and the League Cup but surprisingly losing out to Bolton in the FA Cup Final. They also reached the Champions League Semi Finals but were defeated by Roma. United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy was the top scorer in the Premiership with 31 league goals and the Dutch superstar found the net 54 times in all competitions. United’s new boss Tick Jones landed the Manager of the Year award in his first season south of the border after his success at Celtic.

The final leagues tables for all five divisions are shown below.

Mac The Knife Bound For Old Trafford

Former Celtic manager Tick Jones has secured the services of wonder-striker Gary McCutcheon for his Manchester United team as the clubs agreed a fee in excess if £12M to bring the 28-year-old to Old Trafford. The arrival of the prolific Scottish international has accelerated speculation that Dutch goal machine Ruud van Nistelrooy will be leaving Manchester shortly as Jones unloads the last of his overseas players in his “Buy British†campaign. But his plans took a knock earlier today with the surprise announcement that Sebastian Kehl will not be joining Chelsea as planned as the Londoners have been unable to raise the finance required to complete his transfer.

Barthez Goes Home

Goalkeeper Fabien Barthez left Manchester United to return home to France when he agreed a move to Strasbourg. The 36-year-old spent 7 seasons at Old Trafford but with no contract renewal in sight under the new regime he was happy to make the move and see out his career back home.

More Big-Name Departures at United

Two more of Man United’s foreign stars left Old Trafford earlier today. Seba Veron completed his move to Borrusia Munchengladbach and Sebastian Kehl, whose earlier transfer to Chelsea had fallen through, agreed a £14M move to Milan. With Ruud van Nistelrooy the only squad member who is not from the UK and Ireland, Tick Jones clearout is almost complete.

Keane Leaves Old Trafford

Man United club captain Roy Keane has refused the offer of a new contract at Old Trafford and has decided to leave the club. The United legend has spent 14 seasons at the club, winning a host of trophies and honours along the way. With 100 international caps, over 400 first-team appearances for United and over 560 senior games in his career, the 36-year-old has made no final decision about his future. The most likely move may be as player-manager but he is said to be content to wait and see what offers come his way.

New Look United Unveiled

With the start of the new season just days away, Man United manager Tick Jones has completed a summer clearout of his playing staff, bringing in a number of new faces. This includes midfielders Mark Kerr and David Dunn, keeper Richard Wright and striker Gary McCutcheon. They have been joined by Scotsman Martyn Corrigan, seen by some as a potential replacement in the holding midfield role performed by Roy Keane. Youngsters Mark Nelson, Stephen Archibald and Pat Nugent have also come on board as part of the rebuilding exercise and at the same time the club has released a dozen junior players. The changes are continuing apace with the announcement earlier today that Southampton central defender Callum Davenport has agreed a £6M move to Old Trafford.

United In Charity Shield Triumph

Man United gained revenge for their shock defeat at the hands of Bolton the last seasons’ Cup Final with a 2-0 victory that was much more comprehensive than the scoreline might suggest. There were confident debuts from Richard Wright, Martyn Corrigan, Gary McCutcheon and Mark Kerr, with David Dunn coming off the bench in the second half. Ryan Giggs started where he left off last season with an excellent display in midfield, setting up the opening goal for Darren Fletcher. Kerr added the second on the half hour and given their dominance, United will be disappointed not to have scored more goals. With Ruud van Nistelrooy not even on the bench it seems clear that his days are numbered at Old Trafford.

Van Nistelrooy On The Move

Legendary United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy will be leaving the club in December, it was announced this morning. After half a dozen highly successful seasons in Manchester, the 31-year-old will be joining Nantes for a fee believed to be around £15M. The strike rate of the Dutch international rivals the best in world football – he scored 241 times for United in 320 appearances and in his career so far he has 333 goals in 487 senior games. Most United fans consider him irreplaceable, particularly after he scored a record 54 goals last season under Tick Jones.

Mac The Knife Off The Mark

New Manchester United striker Gary McCutcheon opened his account for the club by scoring twice in their 3-0 win at a hapless Everton. With keeper Richard Wright facing his former employers for the first time since his summer move, the home fans gave the England number one a mixed reception. United struck early, Danny Webber opening the scoring with just two minutes on the clock. McCutcheon added the second on the half hour and then struck again in the second half. United were rarely troubled at the back and Webber had a field day, constantly probing a shaky-looking Everton back line.

Giggs Rips Baggies Apart

Ryan Giggs, fast approaching the veteran stage of his career, continued his sparkling form with a dynamic midfield display. His pace, vision and passing were instrumental in ending the resistance of a brave West Brom side as Man United finally ran out 4-2 winners at the Hawthorns. Mark Kerr put United in front early on but Steve Foster found an equaliser just ten minutes later. Gary McCutcheon put the visitors back in front before the break and Giggs widened the gap shortly after the restart. But the home side fought bravely and pulled a goal back through Ivan Kaviedes before Kerr scored his second to make the game safe.

Mac Knifes Gunners

A goal in the 89th minute from Gary McCutcheon gave Man United a 2-1 win over a hard-working Arsenal side at Highbury. Wes Brown gave United the lead with his first goal of the season after 17 minutes and the visitors were on top for the remainder of the half. But in 20-year-old Mark Goodall the Gunners have a keeper with tremendous potential and the youngster kept the visiting attack at bay for the remainder of the half. Arsenal gained an equaliser shortly after the restart when Jermaine Pennant converted from the penalty spot. United continued to press for the winner but Goodall was equal to their best efforts until Mac the Goal scored his 4th goal in as many games to maintain United’s 100% record.

Kerr Pulls The Strings For United

Former Celtic midfielder Mark Kerr has been in sparkling form since being reunited with manager Tick Jones and the 25-year-old Scot was at the heart of everything good about United’s 3-0 defeat of Monaco. The visitors put up some stout opposition in the first half with the veteran Zinedine Zidane still showing flashes of brilliance in midfield. But United came good in the second period and got their Champions League campaign off to a winning start. Kerr it was who opened the scoring on 66 minutes and shortly afterwards Rio Ferdinand headed home a Giggs corner to double their advantage. Minutes later Kerr set up fellow midfielder David Dunn for United’s 3rd and the game was over.

But with a raft of striking talent at Old Trafford and manager Tick Jones favouring a lone striker formation, Jeffers may find that his playing opportunities are limited.

United Sinners Triumph Over Saints

Perennial relegation strugglers Southampton have been a new team since the highly rated David Moyes took over at St. Marys and, with 4 wins out of 4 they had made a flying start to the season. That run came to an abrupt end at Old Trafford yesterday as they crashed to a 3-1 defeat, despite Man United having two players sent off. Phil Neville was the first to go after a rash two-footed challenge on James Beattie. Wayne Bridge converted the resulting penalty and it cancelled out Gary McCutcheon’s opener for the home side. As half time approached McCutcheon scored his second when he finished off a flowing passing move but seconds later the normally mild-mannered Ryan Giggs received his marching orders following a badly timed tackle on Matthew Hamshaw. At the start of the second half Saints must have fancied their chances of getting back into the game, but United reorganised superbly and made life very difficult for the visitors. David Dunn was playing like a man possessed in midfield, working hard in defence and also getting forward to support McCutcheon whenever possible. He was rewarded with his first goal for his new club with 4 minutes remaining to seal a sparkling win for nine-man United.

Czech That Out

Man United moved to the top of their Champions League group with a superb 4-0 demolition of Sparta Prague in the Czech Republic last night. Inspired by a brilliant display by Danny Webber, they gave their opponents a lesson in attacking football. However, it took 44 minutes before Giggs got them on their way with the opening goal but Kerr, McCutcheon and Webber were all on target after the break to complete a comprehensive win.

Giggs Strike Wins It For United

George Burley is now in his 5th season in charge at Burnley and the Board have been well rewarded by their decision to stick with him following the club’s relegation to the Second Division in 2005. Two successive promotions as league champions has seen the team playing in the Premiership for the first time and they have been acquitting themselves fairly well up till now. His team fought bravely against an on-form Manchester United, restricting their scoring opportunities with some determined defending. But they could do nothing to stop Ryan Giggs in the 22nd minute as he finished off a mazy run with a powerful shot into the back of the net to give the visitors a 1-0 victory.

Parma Sent Packing

Man United made it three wins out of three in the Champions League with an excellent 3-0 defeat of Italian giants Parma. The visitors were outplayed throughout, rarely mounting an effective attack as United turned on the style. Gary McCutcheon got the ball rolling inside ten minutes and the excellent Mark Kerr added the second midway through the first half. Mac the Knife scored again ten minutes from time to wrap up a fine win and put United in pole position in their group.

Kerr Double Sinks Hammers

Two goals from Mark Kerr inside the first 30 minutes gave Manchester United a comfortable lead over visiting West Ham as they sought to keep up their 100% start to the season. Joe Cole pulled a goal back for the Hammers just after the restart but less than five minutes later Danny Webber scored United’s third to restore their cushion. Matteo Sereni was kept busy in the West Ham goal as the home side dominated play but he held firm and there was no further scoring in an entertaining encounter. United had both Phil Neville and Ryan Giggs missing through suspension but Paul Tierney and Luke Chadwick proved to be able deputies.

Thanks chaps.

Pints - Kerr was very overrated back in CM0102 I think and is perhaps more realistically presented in FM2005.

Mambaman - I have several FM2005 games going - in fact my problem is that I have so many games in progress in CM0102, CM0304 and FM2005 that I never actually finish any of my stories!

Narrow Defeat For Stoke

The dedicated fans that followed struggling Stoke to Old Trafford must have feared the worst as their team faced the in-form Man United but a battling defensive display and some inspired keeping by Paul Robinson kept the scoreline respectable. The contest was settled by a Danny Webber goal in the first half although United were not quite as fluid in attack as they have been in recent games.

Tractor Boys Plough Into United

Despite their struggles in the Premiership, Ipswich put in a fine performance against visiting Manchester United and they will feel aggrieved that the 3-1 scoreline did not do them justice. They never let their illustrious visitors settle and although they were under pressure for much of the game they managed to carve out some decent opportunities of their own. The impressive Mark Kerr opened the scoring for United with just 6 minutes on the clock but Ipswich stuck to their guns and Ryan Williams scored a fine equaliser half an hour later. But Kerr struck back immediately to take United into the break with a 2-1 lead. Gary McCutcheon looked to have made the game safe when he found the net shortly after the restart but the home side kept plugging away. They scorned a golden opportunity to get right back into the game when Williams was denied from the penalty spot by former Ipswich youngster Richard Wright. In fact the England number one made a series of fine stops to keep his former club at bay as they continued to press.

United Come Undone In Parma

Tick Jones may regret restoring Phil Neville and Ryan Giggs to the starting eleven for Man United’s Champions League game at Parma as his team suffered their first defeat of the season. Neville picked up two yellow cards inside the first 20 minutes to leave his team a man short and in trouble. By that time Massimo Donati had put the home side in front and with Giggs looking distinctly out of sorts United were struggling to establish themselves. The home side had the better of the play thereafter and the closest United came to an equaliser was a long range strike from David Dunn that struck the upright deep into stoppage time. By that time Wes Brown had been carried off on a stretcher and the defender was later diagnosed with a torn groin muscle and he will be absent for some three months.

United Bandwagon Rolls On

Manchester United recorded their 9th straight Premiership win, albeit in unconvincing style, against visiting Sunderland. Gary McCutcheon scored what proved to be the only goal of the game inside the first 5 minutes and the 67,000-plus fans packed into Old Trafford had to endure a laboured performance from both sides thereafter. United struggled to get into their rhythm and the visitors barely managed a shot on target all afternoon. There is no doubt that United will be the happier of the teams with the result, the win extending their lead at the top of the table to 8 points over Chelsea.

United Fire Blanks In France

Manchester United spurned an opportunity to book their place in the second group phase of the Champions League when they failed to turn their territorial supremacy into goals, returning from Monaco with a 0-0 draw. They created a host of fine scoring opportunities but consistently failed to test veteran Russian keeper Alexandr Filimonov. The closest they came to scoring was when Danny Webber struck the post towards the end of the game. They are now tied with Parma on 10 points but should secure their qualification when Sparta Prague visit Manchester in a fortnight.

United Taste First League Defeat

Manchester United returned from the trip to rivals Liverpool with the bitter taste of their first Premiership defeat in their mouths. The two sides were well matched and a first-half goal from Stephane Henchoz proved to be all that separated them at the final whistle. United will consider themselves a trifle unfortunate as they struck the woodwork twice before conceding, but their usually potent midfield and attack was not quite firing on all cylinders.

Sparta Spanked At Old Trafford

Man United made sure of their place in the second group phase of the Champions League with a comprehensive 5-0 defeat of Sparta Prague last night. Danny Webber and Gary McCutcheon each scored twice in as good an attacking performance as the Old Trafford faithful have seen all season. The impressive Martyn Corrigan added the 5th from the penalty spot as he put in another assured performance in his position in front of the back four. It is no easy task filling the gap left by Roy Keane but the Scotsman has been faultless since arriving at the club in the summer. United have been drawn with Club Brugge, Inter and Rangers in their next set of group games.

Boro Close But No Cigar

Middlesborough put up a good fight at Old Trafford, coming back from two goals behind to cause Manchester United real problems in the closing period, but the home side were ultimately too good for the visitors and held on for a 2-1 win. United had the better of the opening exchanges and for the second game in succession there was a disputed penalty created by Webber. Once again there were strong claims that the 25-year-old had made a meal of a challenge by former United youngster John Curtis, but the match official didn’t see it that way. Corrigan despatched the spot kick and David Dunn made it 2-0 before the break. But Middlesborough are a very determined outfit under Steve McLaren and they came back strongly, pulling a goal back through Ricardo Gardner on the stroke of half time. Despite carving out several more decent chances they couldn’t complete their comeback though and headed for home defeated.
