Whitely Joins United

Earlier today Man United announced the signing of Northern Irish international midfielder Jeff Whitely from Brentford for a fee of £500K. This is the third British player brought into the United squad this season, fuelling further speculation of a plan to rid the team of its’ foreign stars.

Veron Runs The Show

An imperious midfield display by Saba Veron was the key to Manchester United’s 2-0 defeat of Spurs at White Hart Lane yesterday. The Argentinean controlled the centre of midfield, picking out his colleagues time and again with precision passes and creating both of his team’s goals. Ryan Giggs was the first to benefit from Veron’s vision, a threaded pass freeing the Welshman for the first goal. After the break it was Paul Scholes who took advantage of another slide rule pass, beating the offside trap with a perfectly timed run and slipping the ball into the net. If United boss Tick Jones is indeed planning to dispose of his overseas players he may find it very difficult to find an adequate replacement for Veron. Still only 31, he recently gained his 100th cap for his country and has been playing some of the best football of his career this season.

United Lose In Bordeaux

Having already qualified for the next phase of the Champions League, Manchester United were only playing for pride at Bordeaux. The French side however needed a win to take the runners-up place in the group and they duly achieved their objective, inflicting United’s first defeat of the season in the process. Bordeaux’s 2-0 win ensured that they would join their opponents in the second group stage of the competition.

United Motor On

A 1-0 win at home to Southampton maintained Man United’s 100% record in the league. The only goal of the game came in the 69th minute when Saints keeper Jim Provett could only parry a fierce shot from Danny Webber and Ruud van Nistelrooy was first to react to prod home the rebound. It was tough on the young stopper as up until then he had put in a flawless display, making a number of fine saves to keep the game scoreless.

Ten-Man United Hold Out In Rome

Manchester United started the second group phase of the Champions League with a 2-2 draw against Roma, coming back from a goal down and a man down to gain a valuable point. Ruud van Nistelrooy got them off to a great start with a goal inside 20 minutes but Roma struck back shortly afterwards when central defender Jens Nowotny scored his first goal for the club. Argentinean striker Marin Palermo then put the home side in front near the interval with a powerful header. When United defender John O’Shea picked up a second yellow card in first-half stoppage time things looked grim for his team. But Tick Jones reorganised, bringing off Danny Webber to allow Ferdinand to come off the bench. And it was the substitute who scored the crucial equaliser with less than ten minutes remaining, converting a Giggs corner to

Yesterday Blackburn Rovers became the first team this season to deny Manchester United maximum points in a league game. Despite rarely threatening to find the net during their visit to Old Trafford, they defended manfully and managed to reach the 80th minute with their goal still intact. Then Danny Webber scored what looked to be the winning goal for United but the visitors had the temerity to go straight back up the pitch after the restart and get an equaliser through former Newcastle youngster Michael Chopra.

Nil Points For Nantes

Man United gave the Old Trafford faithful a superb display of attacking football in their Champions League encounter with Nantes, winning by a comfortable 4-0 margin. Van Nistelrooy scored once in each half, with Giggs and Scholes providing the other goals. United could even afford the luxury of a late penalty miss by Scholes, who put in probably his best performance of the season so far. Newcastle came very close to inflicting Man United’s first league defeat of the season as a pulsating encounter at Old Trafford ended all square at 3-3. Van Nistelrooy opened the scoring for United after ten minutes but Newcastle got back on terms midway through the half with a Jason Roberts goal. Saba Veron fired United ahead on 38 minutes but two minutes later it was all square again as the excellent Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored. The Swedish international gave the visitors the lead just five minutes into the second period and United knew they had a game on their hands. They worked hard to find an equaliser and finally got back on terms through Phil Neville, although only he will know if his scoring effort was a cross or a shot. Bolton In Cup Final Shock

Bolton Wanderers put an indifferent league season behind them to pull off a shock defeat of Manchester United in the FA Cup Final yesterday. With United still looking out of sorts after their elimination from the Champions League, Bolton took full advantage of their opponent’s poor form by scoring three times in a ten-minute period either side of half time. Journeyman forward Luke Beckett enjoyed his day in the limelight, scoring twice, and Paul Ifill provided the other goal. Roy Carroll looked uncertain in the United goal and Ryan Giggs had an uncharacteristically quiet game as the pre-match favourites failed to live up to expectations.
