Dons Close To Upset

Aberdeen came very close to upsetting visitors Celtic after young midfielder Fergus Tiernan scored twice in 10 minutes in the second half to give the home side a 2-0 lead. But Celtic were able to restore parity through Mark Kerr and Alan Johnston to grab a point in a 2-2 draw. The result was hard on an enterprising Aberdeen team whose inventive play belied their poor league position.

Ross The Boss For Celts

Celtic central defender Maurice Ross was called into action early in their game against Livingston when Paul Ritchie was forced to withdraw with a gashed leg. Making only his 4th appearance of the season so far Ross made his presence known almost immediately, scoring with a header less than two minutes after his arrival. This proved to be the only goal of the game as Livvy keeper Broto repelled everything else that was thrown at him.

Heartbreak For Real In Glasgow

Real Madrid came to Celtic Park last night knowing that they had to win in order to grab the second qualifying place in their Champions League group. The visitors had the better of the first half but Celtic kept them at bay until the break. An injury to Alan Johnston just before half time was a blow for Celtic but replacement Colin Cameron performed admirably. Madrid got the goal they craved when captain Raul found the net after 60 minutes. With time ticking away Lim Lauchlan was red-carded for a two-footed lunge and it looked like curtains for Celtic. But Tick Jones’s team is nothing if not determined and who should pop up in stoppage time to grab an unlikely equaliser but Gary McCutcheon. This last-gasp goal, combined with PSV’s 2-1 win in Zurich, meant that Real were eliminated and PSV will progress.

Mac The Man At Fir Park

Celtic striker Gary McCutcheon was on target twice as his team ran up a comfortable 4-0 win at Motherwell yesterday. With Jim Lauchlan and Maurice Ross forming a solid defensive partnership the home side found attack after attack breaking down and the visitors took full advantage. Jackie McNamara and Kenny Miller also found themselves on the scoresheet in a ruthless display of finishing. The only blot on the copybook for Celtic was an injury to midfielder Mark Kerr that will keep the Scotland international out for a fortnight.

County Go Home Empty-Handed

Struggling Ross County travelled back from Celtic Park to Dingwall on the wrong end of a 3-1 defeat. First-half goals from Maurice Ross and Stephen Pearson gave Celtic a half time cushion that Gary McCutcheon built on in the second period. Youngster George McDonald gave County a consolation goal near the end but the Highlanders face a tough relegation fight on this form.

Kennedy Off As Celtic Come To Grief

Young central defender John Kennedy picked up two yellow cards in the first half of Celtic’s second phase group game against Atalanta at Parkhead last night. The 21-year-old was filling in for Jim Lauchlan who suffered the same fate in Celtic’s last Champions League fixture. By the time Kennedy received his marching orders the home side were already one-down and struggling. Unable to develop any kind of attacking rhythm, Celtic looked laboured and when the visitors scored their second shortly after the restart there looked to be now way back. Gary McCutcheon gave them some hope with a late strike but the Italians never looked like relinquishing their lead. In the other game in the group Barcelona crushed Liverpool 4-0 at the Nou Camp and look to be in awesome form.

Gers On Top In Old Firm Game

Rangers took what manager Alex McLeish described as “a major step towards the title†with a win over Celtic that was as emphatic as the 3-1 scoreline suggests. Celtic were never at the races with a number of key players putting in below-par performances. It took Andy Cole just 8 minutes to open the scoring with Freddie Ljunberg doubling their advantage before the break. Former Celt Chris Sutton gained sweet revenge for his unwilling departure by scoring the third 15 minutes from time before Stephen Simmons made the score slightly more respectable. Celtic boss Tick Jones was not available for comment after the game, but the expression on his face as the final whistle sounded was eloquent enough!

Celtic Leave It Late

Celtic booked their place in the Semi-Finals of the League Cup with a 1-0 win over Livingstone but they left it very late indeed to make the breakthrough. With Livingston keeper Broto in sparkling form Celtic spent a frustrating evening giving the Spaniard a thorough workout. Two minutes into stoppage time it looked like the 34-year-old had run out of luck when Stewart Greacen sent Stephen Simmons tumbling in the area. However Broto proved equal to the task by turning away Mark Wilson’s poorly struck penalty. But the drama wasn’t over yet as a minute later Shaun Maloney latched on to a Kiegan Parker pass to slot the ball home for the winner.

Celtic Loose At Anfield

Celtic’s hopes of further progression in the Champions League took a blow as they lost 1-0 to Liverpool in their second Phase Two group game. The home side dominated proceedings with Celtic rarely able to mount an effective attack and Jamie Langfield made a number of fine stops to enable his side to reach the break unscathed. Celtic’s best opportunity came just after the restart when a frantic scramble in the Liverpool area saw both Kiegan Parker and Mark Kerr hit the woodwork. But when Luca Toni put Liverpool in front on the hour mark Celtic never looked like getting back on terms.

Narrow Win For Celts

Celtic recorded a narrow 1-0 win over visiting Dundee in last night’s televised SPL match thanks to a second half goal from Gary McCutcheon. In an attempt to improve his team’s recent lacklustre displays Celtic boss Tick Jones employed a formation that is very unusual for him – a flat back four. Dispensing with his standard holding midfielder his team played a standard 4-4-2 and it was certainly good enough to beat a poor Dundee side. The visitors failed to register a shot on target during the 90 minutes and if winger Gary Teale had seen a little more luck with his shooting the final score would have been more substantial.

Five-Goal Thriller at Love Street

St. Mirren and Celtic dished up an attractive display of attacking football in Paisley last night with the visitors coming out on top by the odd goal in five. Though given the chances that Celtic created it is amazing that they didn’t double their tally. Stephen Simmons got the ball rolling after 25 minutes but 60 seconds later Sergio Aparicio levelled the scores. Five minutes after that Gretar Hjartarson put the Buddies in front but their lead lasted only a few minutes before Gary McCutcheon got Celtic back on terms. The visitors then set about Kevin Cuthbert’s goal with a vengeance, peppering him with shots and headers. They finally broke through with 25 minutes remaining when James McFadden found the winner.

Sorry Langfield Costs Celts Dear

An uncertain display by Celtic keeper Jamie Langfield cost his team dear as they slumped to a 3-2 defeat at struggling St. Johnstone. The home side took the lead with barely two minutes on the clock when Langfield spilled a header from Tom Kearney allowing Mark Campbell to lash the ball home. Tommy Lovenkrands made it 2-0 near the break with a strong header before the visitors scored a fortuitous goal when Kenny Miller’s attempt deflected home off the unfortunate Greig Denham. St. Johnstone shrugged this aside and re-established their two-goal lead on 60 minutes when Lovenkrands got his second of the game. Gary McCutcheon scored a consolation in stoppage time but a poor defensive display cost Celtic dear and Rangers now have a 14-point lead at the top of the table.

McCutcheon Treble Gets Celts Back On Track

The deadly Gary McCutcheon took his tally to 24 goals in 23 games with a clinical first half hat trick against Aberdeen yesterday. Having reverted back to Tick Jones favoured tactical formation Celtic played with a lone striker and pinned the visitors back for the bulk of the game. McCutcheon seems happier when he is not playing directly alongside a strike partner and Shaun Maloney operated effectively as a withdrawn striker behind the frontman. The impressive James McFadden added the 4th goal in the second half as Celtic ran out comfortable 4-0 winners.

Celts Held at Tannadice

For most of their encounter with Dundee United last night it looked like a single goal from Gary McCutcheon would be sufficient to give Celtic all three points. Mac the Knife scored after 20 minutes and for the bulk of the game the home side didn’t look like getting back on terms. But a lapse in concentration near the end allowed Danny Ogunmade to equalise with a brave diving header just 7 minutes from time to secure a 1-1 draw.

Livingston Slump Continues

Livingston suffered yet another league defeat as they found visitors Celtic too strong a handful. Despite having some decent possession they couldn’t find a way past a determined Celtic defence and were continually caught on the break. It was late in the first half before the impressive Gary Teale opened the scoring for the visitors. Stephen Simmons added a second 20 minutes after the restart before Teale scored his second of the game with 12 minutes remaining. A late strike from Kiegan Parker rounded off a comprehensive 4-0 win for the visitors.

Cuthbert Off As Buddies Collapse

An early bath for St. Mirren keeper Kevin Cuthbert precipitated a spectacular collapse as Celtic hit four without reply in the first half of their league meeting at Parkhead. Cuthbert was dismissed for bringing down Gary McCutcheon as the striker was going past him and Maurice Ross converted the resulting penalty. McCutcheon himself scored twice and Shaun Maloney added the 4th before the break. The Gary McCutcheon “goal machine†rolls on and having scored all three goals in Celtic’s 3-1 win over Hibs yesterday the super striker has now hit the 30-goal mark for the season. The 55,000 hardy souls that braved the elements on a cold and wet night at Parkhead were warmed by the striker’s skills. Young Dunfermline defender Dirk Wagner lost his head, and ultimately cost his team dear, when he was dismissed just 8 minutes into their game against Celtic last night. The German youngster, making only his 4th start of the season, clattered into Shaun Maloney with a dangerous two-footed challenge and received a straight red. Minutes later another Dunfermline youngster, Dutch defender Kevin Vink, pushed over James McFadden in the area to concede a penalty. Celtic midfielder Mark Kerr was a key figure in their fine 3-0 win at Dundee, scoring twice and making the third as he took charge of the game. His intelligent running caused the Dundee defence problems all afternoon and he showed an eye for goal with some neat finishing. Kerr opened the scoring on 6 minutes, ghosting into the area to head home a cross from Jackie McNamara. His second came 5 minutes before the interval when he showed a striker’s instincts by being in the right place to tap home after keeper Mark Brown could only parry a Gary McCutcheon header. He then turned provider later in the game when he teed up Gary Teale for Celtic’s third with less than 15 minutes remaining.

Honours Even In Old Firm Classic

Rangers kept themselves in the driving seat for the title by twice coming from behind to secure a 2-2 draw in this vital Old Firm encounter. An even opening spell saw both teams playing positive football but with Celtic having slightly more of the ball. Gary McCutcheon opened the scoring for the home side on the half hour to mark the 200th league goal of his career. That’s how the score stayed until some 15 minutes from time when Rangers scored a fine equaliser. Freddie Ljungberg and Michael Mols combined delightfully to present former Celt Chris Sutton with a header that he put powerfully away. Sutton has been in outstanding form since he returned to Scotland from Middlesbrough and he is one of the few strikers in the SPL that comes anywhere near McCutcheon’s strike rate. Celtic were clearly keen to take all three points and with 5 minutes remaining they looked like they had succeeded in this objective when McCutcheon put them ahead. But barely a minute later Sutton scored his second of the game to tie the scores once more. As the final whistle sounded there was little doubt which team was better pleased with the result – the stalemate keeps Rangers 4 points ahead with just one more Old Firm league match to play.

McLeish Leaves Rangers

Scottish football was stunned by yesterday’s news that Rangers boss Alex McLeish was leaving the club to take over at Leeds United. Since the departure of Terry Venables from Elland Road a week ago there has been intense speculation regarding his successor. McLeish was inevitably mentioned as a contender but no one at Ibrox took the speculation too seriously. It was therefore a major shock to the Rangers Board when their longstanding manager expressed an interest in talking to the Yorkshire club. A deal was quickly agreed and to the dismay of the Rangers faithful McLeish has packed his bags and gone south. Leeds are currently struggling in the EPL and lie 17th, just one point above the relegation places, but McLeish is said to be looking forward to the challenge of reviving their fortunes.

Celtic Outclassed In Spain

Celtic’s hopes of progressing to the knockout stages of the Champions League took a severe blow after a poor performance in Barcelona saw them return with a 3-1 defeat. Young keeper John Connolly showed his lack of European experience in a nervy display that gifted the Spaniards both of their opening goals. Juan Riquelme scored the opener early on with a shot from distance that Connolly should have had covered. The second came on 23 minutes when Paolo Montero outjumped the keeper to head home a David Beckham corner. Celtic showed some resolve to improve their play in the second period and Gary McCutcheon gave them hope when he pulled a goal back with 10 minutes remaining. But Barcelona struck back almost immediately through Patrick Kluivert to restore their two-goal advantage and with three group games played Celtic are at the foot of the table and have yet to gain a point.

Celtic’s faint hopes of further progression in the Champions League went out the window at Parkhead last night when a late penalty gave Barcelona a 2-1 win. The Spanish visitors deserved the victory on the balance of play but having dragged themselves back into the game after going behind early on to a Javier Saviola goal, Celtic will be disappointed by the nature of the winning goal. Young keeper Connolly showed that he is rapidly maturing by putting in a sterling performance between the sticks to help his team weather a flurry of attacks and reach the break with just a one-goal deficit. Gary McCutcheon squared the game on the hour but with just under 10 minutes remaining Jackie McNamara was adjudged to have handled the ball in the area and Riquelme tucked away the spot kick to ensure that the Scots were eliminated.

With both halves of the Old Firm beating First Division opposition in their respective Scottish Cup Quarter Finals, the big two have been kept apart in the draw and could yet meet in the final. Celtic worked hard to get past a plucky Morton side with a 2-1 scoreline that flatters the home side to a large extent. Thoroughly outplayed for most of the game, Morton relied on the brilliance of captain Thomas Muirhead between the sticks to limit Celtic to just two goals. Stephen Simmons and Alan Johnston were on target for the visitors in the second half and young Steven Dallas got the Morton consolation goal. Rangers also progressed by a single goal, and their 1-0 win at Kilmarnock was as tight as the scoreline suggests, with a Chris Sutton goal after 12 minutes the only thing that separated the teams.

Celtic In League Cup Triumph

Celtic brushed aside the disappointment of their Champions League whitewash to lift the League Cup with a 3-0 defeat of underdogs Kilmarnock. The Perth side worked hard to deny Celtic time and space in the first period with some success and as half time approached they looked like reaching the break with their goal intact. But defender Mark Campbell undid all of his team’s hard work when he upended Mark Kerr in the area to concede a penalty. Maurice Ross made no mistake from the spot to put Celtic ahead. Worse was to follow in first half stoppage time as Ross scored an unexpected second, latching on to a half-blocked free kick to slide the ball home. Gary McCutcheon rounded off the scoring when he beat keeper Maik Taylor to a Stephen Crainey cross to head home. Their 7th League Cup triumph in the last 9 seasons gives Celtic the first leg in a possible domestic treble so despite their exit from Europe Tick Jones and his team still have much to play for.

Maloney Double Sinks Hibees

Two goals from a rampant Shaun Maloney was enough to give Celtic a narrow 2-1 win over Hibs at Easter Road yesterday. With Gary McCutcheon looking uncharacteristically hesitant in front of goal the youngster’s contribution proved vital in securing three points and keeping the Celtic title challenge on course. It was a passion-filled encounter as would be expected but neither side played with any great attacking rhythm. Both goals came early in the first half, Gary McCutcheon firing the Hoops ahead on 15 minutes with the Gers replying straight from the restart through captain Barry Ferguson. There were precious few scoring opportunities thereafter giving the sellout crowd little to cheer about on a wet and windy afternoon.

Rangers Have It All To Do

Rangers face an uphill struggle if they are to reach their first European final for over 30 years following a 3-1 defeat in Barcelona. The Spaniards struck twice early on through Thierry Henry and Javier Saviola before Freddie Ljungberg pulled a goal back with 10 minutes of the first half remaining. The home side continued to press and finally gained their reward with a 3rd goal ten minutes from time. Rangers captain Barry Ferguson was adjudged to have backed into Henry in the area and the resulting penalty was coolly despatched by Brazilian star Amoroso. In the other Semi Final, Liverpool held Man United to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford. Former Celtic man Didier Agathe struck first for the ‘Pool inside 10 minutes but Juan Veron found an equaliser 5 minutes later. United enjoyed the better of the play from there on but were unable to find a winning goal and will travel to Anfield knowing that they must score if they are to progress.
