Celtic Win Shootout In Lyon

On a night of high drama at the Stade Gerland in Lyon, Celtic survived a penalty shootout to reach the UEFA Cup Quarter Finals and keep captain Paul Lambert’s hope of European glory alive. It was an uncharacteristically hesitant performance from Celtic as they appeared intent on holding their narrow 1-0 lead from the first leg. But two minutes before the break Peguy Luyindula squared the aggregate scores. Both sides defended well and neither showed the invention or calmness in front of goal to find an all-important winner. 90 minutes came and went and when there were no further goals in the extra time period the shootout began. Lyon went first and each of their first four penalties were duly converted. Stephen Pearson calmly converted Celtic’s first kick but substitute Michael Stewart blazed their second over the bar to put Tick Jones’s team on the back foot. Mark Kerr scored the 3rd and Kenny Miller took Celtic’s 4th kick knowing that he must score to keep his team in the game and he did just that. Defender Cedric Uras then spurned the chance to win it for Lyon when he sent their 5th spot kick too high. Brian McAllister then stepped up knowing that he too must score and indeed he did. When midfielder Eric Carriere put his kick too close to Langfield, Gary McCutcheon had the chance to clinch it for the Celts. The 26-year-old striker made no mistake, firing home into the bottom corner to give Celtic a 5-4 win in the shootout.

Celtic Face Roma In UEFA Cup

Celtic have been drawn against Italian giants Roma in the UEFA Cup Quarter Final. The current Serie A leaders are undoubtedly the strongest side left in the competition and Celtic will face a huge challenge if their quest for European glory is to continue. The first leg will be played in Glasgow in 10 days time.

Celtic Cruise To Semis

The Celtic second string proved too strong for Inverness Caledonian in yesterday’s Scottish Cup Quarter Final at Parkhead. With the first choice players being rested in preparation for their forthcoming UEFA Cup encounter the home side were still rarely troubled in a comfortable 3-1 win. Stephen Simmons and Colin Cameron gave Celtic a 2-0 lead inside the first 15 minutes. Bradley Allen gave the visitors some hope with a goal on the stroke of half time but Cameron’s second of the game on the hour mark killed the game off.

Sublime Celtic See Off Roma

Despite the absence of their hugely influential captain Paul Lambert because of an injury picked up in midweek training, Celtic recorded a fine 3-1 victory in the home leg of their UEFA Cup tie with Roma. They started somewhat nervously but grew in stature as the first half progressed. Stand-in captain Michael Stewart, seen by many at Parkhead as a natural successor to Lambert, opened the scoring with a powerful free kick shortly before the break. With their confidence growing by the minute, the excellent Mark Kerr added a second after 60 minutes but unfortunately had to be withdrawn 5 minutes later. Substitute Stephen Simmons sent the fans into raptures with a third goal with 15 minutes remaining. However, Roma scored what could be a very valuable away goal when Brian McAllister was rather harshly adjudged to have impeded Martin Palermo in the area. The resulting penalty was tucked away by Marco Delvecchio to give the Italians a potential lifeline.

Tangerines Lift League Cup

Dundee United secured their first trophy in over 10 years with a comprehensive 4-0 defeat of Hibs in the League Cup Final. James Fowler got United on their way with a goal after 23 minutes. When Hibs had defender Takis Fissas sent off just after the restart it was clear that they would struggle to recover. Derek Lilley put United two ahead after 51 minutes and Kevin Nicholls killed the game off with a third after 75 minutes. Lilley rounded off a fine performance with his second and United’s fourth two minutes from time.

Italian Joy For Celtic

Celtic secured a narrow aggregate victory over Roma last night to progress to the Semi Finals of the UEFA Cup. Stephen Crainey gave the Hoops a wonderful start scoring with a free kick after quarter of an hour. Ten minutes later Gary McCutcheon put Celtic in a commanding position with his 40th goal of the season. At this point the visitors were ahead 5-1 on aggregate and looked unbeatable. But Roma captain Francesco Totti had other ideas and almost single-handedly he set about repairing the damage. He pulled a goal back after 36 minutes to give Roma a glimmer of hope but they still required a further 4 goals to overturn Celtic’s lead. And how close they came! In a frantic 15-minute finale Totti scored his second on 76 minutes, Emerson put Roma ahead on the night with 4 minutes remaining and Totti completed his hat trick in stoppage time. But a magnificent 4-2 win was not enough, as with an aggregate score of 5-5 Celtic qualified on away goals, much to the relief of manager Jones and captain Lambert.

Celtic Seconds Too Good For County

Celtic manager Tick Jones continued with his recent policy of resting his first choice players ahead of crucial European games when he made wholesale changes for their league game against Ross County in Glasgow. County, desperate to avoid relegation, took an early lead through the excellent Darren Jack but Paul Shields struck back within minutes to square the game. The scores remained tied at the break but Alan Johnston put Celtic in front early in the second half. Shields added a third on the hour mark but County wouldn’t lie down and Jack gave them hope with his second of the game. However, a rampant Shields completed his hat trick 7 minutes from time and added a 4th before the end to give Celtic a 5-2 win.

Kerr Double Sees Off Germans

Two goals and a Man of the Match performance from Mark Kerr gave Celtic a solid lead to take to Germany as they defeated Hannover 96 in the first leg of their UEFA Cup Semi Final in Glasgow last night. The home side played well throughout and created a number of good scoring opportunities, most of which were kept out by the Hannover captain and keeper Daniel Haas. Kerr struck twice in three minutes just before the break to put Celtic in a strong position for the return leg. However midway through the second half it looked like the visitors had grabbed an away goal but substitute Jiri Stajner was flagged for offside as he tucked the ball away.

It’s Another Old Firm Final

Yesterday’s Scottish Cup Semi Finals went to form, setting up yet another Old Firm Cup Final. Celtic rested their first choice players but were still too good for Dunfermline, winning 3-1. The first half finished scoreless but Paul Shields gave Celtic the lead after 52 minutes. With 20 minutes remaining Steve Brown found an equaliser for Dunfermline, raising their hopes of a replay. But Alan Johnston put Celtic back in front and Shaun Maloney added the third with a couple of minutes remaining. The other game was a dour affair with Motherwell intent on avoiding defeat and Rangers not firing on all cylinders. The stalemate was finally ended by Michael Mols 15 minutes from time with Stephen Hughes putting the issue beyond doubt 10 minutes later.

Celtic Through To UEFA Final

Celtic booked their place in the UEFA Cup Final with an excellent 2-1 win in Hannover last night to complete a fairly comfortable 4-1 aggregate victory. Stephen Pearson gave Celtic the lead on the half hour when he coolly converted from the penalty spot after he himself had been pushed in the area. After an hour the home side found an equaliser but within two minutes Kenny Miller scored to put Celtic back in charge. Manager Tick Jones was pleased not just with the result, but also with the disciplined manner in which it was achieved. His team went into the game with 5 players just one booking away from missing the final, including key players such as Lambert, Kerr and Teale. All of them survived unscathed on an evening that saw three Hannover players receive yellow cards. Celtic will face German opposition in the final after Schalke 04 completed a 4-0 aggregate win over Grasshoppers of Switzerland. Schalke are likely to be regarded as favourites as the final will be played in the Olympiastadion in Berlin.

Celtic Buckle at Ibrox

The final Old Firm game of the season produced a resounding 4-0 win for Rangers at Ibrox. Celtic struggled from first whistle to last and had no response to the drive and attacking flair of their opponents. Rangers captain Barry Ferguson opened the scoring after just 9 minutes and Michael Mols added a second 5 minutes later. When Andy Cole made it 3-0 on the half hour the game was as good as over and Kevin Nolan put the icing on the cake for the home fans with a 4th goal on the stroke of half time. Whilst technically not a title decider as there are two games remaining, this result almost certainly means that Rangers will take the championship as they are two points clear and are in such good form that they have lost just two games all season.

UEFA Cup Glory For Celtic

Celtic captain Paul Lambert led by example in the UEFA Cup Final against Schalke 04 at the Olympiastadion in Berlin and his superb performance was a major factor in their win. The Germans started confidently and took the lead after 22 minutes through Emile Mpenza. But Celtic showed their character and fought back with an equaliser 10 minutes later when Gary McCutcheon ended his recent goal drought. The teams entered the break all-square but with Schalke looking the most likely to score again. However, the Celtic defence held firm and within 10 minutes of the restart Stephen Pearson gave them the lead. When Schalke midfielder Stefan Siedschlag was shown a red card 15 minutes from time the odds tilted in favour of the Scots. There was no further scoring and it was a proud Paul Lambert that lifted the club’s second European trophy. The game itself was far from a classic but the thousands of Celtic supporters who had made the trip to Berlin didn’t care about that. They had the result that they had been dreaming of and the club’s controversial policy of only signing Scottish players has been fully justified.

So for the second time in 10 days Paul Lambert was able to hoist high a trophy in front of thousands of adoring Celtic fans. The 35-year-old may well decide to call it a day after achieving his ambition of leading Celtic to European glory but there is no doubt that he remains one of the club’s most influential players.

United Stun Celts

Dundee United ensured that Celtic’s league campaign did not get off to the best of starts, recording a fine 3-2 win over the visitors. The Celtic management were not best pleased with referee John Underhill’s handling of the game as he disallowed no less than three goals because of offside decisions. But take nothing away from United as they never let their illustrious visitors settle and, despite falling behind twice, showed great character to come back each time. Stephen Simmons gave Celtic the lead after 14 minutes but the excellent Craig Easton squared the game 10 minutes later. Kiegan Parker then scored Celtic’s second on 35 minutes but Derek Lilley struck back within minutes. Alex Hauser completed the Tangerines recovery with a winner 9 minutes from time and the young Austrian looks like becoming a key player for United. Celtic were without the services of goal ace Gary McCutcheon who is sidelined for a month with a groin strain but will feel mightily aggrieved that they failed to get the win.

Celtic in Super Cup Brawl

Several other players got involved in a general pushing match and the final outcome saw the two protagonists both dismissed for violent conduct. Milan scored once in each half through Shevchenko and Inzaghi to spoil Celtic’s hopes of landing an early trophy.

Richardson Goes To Italy

Yesterday Rangers announced the sale of exciting young left winger Kieran Richardson to Italian giants Juventus for a fee of £6.25M. The Gers supporters have responded with dismay as they see a brilliant young talent leave the team. The 20-year-old has provided a potent attacking threat and has been a key player for the last 4 seasons.

Scotland Held In Iceland

Despite taking an early lead through Kevin Kyle, Scotland were outplayed by Iceland last night in Reykjavik and were fortunate to escape with a draw. Aberdeen’s Calum Bett scored the equaliser in the second half but Scotland are still in pole position to qualify. They require a point from their final game against Norway at Hampden next month to ensure that they will be attending the World Cup Finals in Germany.

First Blood To Rangers

A goal 10 minutes from time by Michael Mols gave Rangers a 1-0 win in the first Old Firm match of the season at Celtic Park. There was little to choose between the teams in a vibrant encounter. Celtic created more openings but lacked a cutting edge up front and will be looking forward to the imminent return of Gary McCutcheon. Rangers now top the table with Dundee United just a point behind whilst Celtic are some way back in 3rd.

Mac Is Back

Gary McCutcheon celebrated his return to competitive football with a splendid hat trick to give Celtic a perfect start to their Champions League group. The 3-0 win over PSV flattered the home side slightly as the Dutch always looked dangerous with young talent Arjen Robben striking the woodwork twice in the first half. But there was no stopping Mac the Knife as he opened his account just 6 minutes into the game and two more strikes followed in the second half. The other group game saw Real Madrid record the same scoreline in Zurich.

McAteer On Target for Dundee

Celtic may be going strong in Europe but their domestic form is rocky to say the least. Yesterday they suffered an embarrassing 3-1 defeat at Dundee with the evergreen Jason McAteer scoring a splendid hat trick. The Irish international struck after just 4 minutes and then things went from bad to worse for the visitors as Michael Stewart was sent off after 15 minutes for a two-footed lunge. Gary McCutcheon squared the game after 25 minutes but McAteer restored the advantage minutes later. He completed his hat trick 20 minutes from time to round off a miserable afternoon for Celtic keeper Jamie Langfield.

All Square At The Bernabeu

Celtic recovered from a poor start in their Champions League group game against Real Madrid to return with a creditable 2-2 draw. A blunder by keeper Jamie Langfield allowed Fernando Morientes to open the scoring virtually straight from the kick off. Celtic weathered quite a storm for the next 45 minutes as Real went looking for goals and Langfield redeemed himself with a series of fine stops. Then the ever-reliable Jackie McNamara found an invaluable equaliser in first half stoppage time. Just after the half hour Stephen Simmons gave Celtic the lead and we began to wonder if they could hold on for an unlikely win. But it was not to be and the very impressive Ronaldo tied the scores with 20 minutes remaining. In the other group game PSV beat FC Zurich 2-0 in Eindhoven to restore their own chances.

Celtic Scrape Past St. Johnstone

Despite exerting sustained pressure on bottom of the table St. Johnstone, Celtic struggled to turn their dominance into goals and finally had to settle for a narrow 1-0 win thanks to midfielder Stephen Simmons. The 23-year-old is now a regular starter and seems to be settling in to his role very well indeed. The welcome 3 points take Celtic up to 3rd but they are 8 points adrift of leaders Rangers.

Swiss Won’t Roll Over

The Celtic faithful endured a frustrating night at Parkhead as visitors FC Zurich led a charmed life in their Champions League group encounter. The home side totally dominated the game but found themselves facing a keeper in truly inspirational form and Peter Joller pulled of a stunning set of saves to frustrate the Celtic players and supporters alike. The breakthrough finally came in first half stoppage time when Jamie Buchan scored his first of the season. The second period was a mirror image of the first, with chance after chance kept out by the Swiss keeper. However, the 1-0 win still gives Celtic three points and with PSV beating Real Madrid 1-0 the group is wide open. An injury to Stephen Simmons is a blow to Celtic though as the midfielder will be out for several weeks with a pulled hamstring.

Celtic Slip Up Again

It seems to be a case of two steps forward and one step back for Celtic presently and they suffered another poor domestic result in a 2-2 draw at Hibs yesterday. An early Gary McCutcheon goal gave Celtic the lead and their advantage was doubled before half time with an unfortunate Paolo Vernazza own goal. But they looked far from impressive and a hard working Hibs side never let the visitors settle. They were rewarded when former Celtic youngster John Paul McBride scored twice within a minute to give the home side a valuable point.

Sutton Back In Scotland

Former Celtic striker Chris Sutton, a casualty of the Parkhead “All-Scots†policy, returned to Scotland after 4 successful seasons at Middlesbrough. The 32-year-old has been snapped up by Rangers on a free transfer and is said to be delighted at the prospect of facing his former employers in the near future.

Celts Cruise Past Pars

Celtic moved comfortably into the League Cup Quarter Finals with a 5-0 demolition of Dunfermline at Celtic Park last night. Manager Tick Jones unveiled a slightly different formation than is normally employed, playing a second striker alongside Gary McCutcheon and sacrificing a midfield player. Given Dunfermline’s all round ineptitude on the night it is difficult to tell if the new lineup was responsible for such a fine result. This writer suspects that Celtic could have fielded their reserves and the result would not have been much different. Stephen Pearson got the ball rolling after just 3 minutes with Mark Kerr adding a second on the half hour. Just before half time Pars keeper Steve Croudsen was red-carded after felling Kiegan Parker in the area. An attacker was withdrawn and substitute keeper Mike Franks came on, doing well to keep out the resulting penalty from Pearson. In the second half Celtic took full advantage of the extra man and McCutcheon scored a hat trick to complete the rout.

Germany Here We Come

Berti Vogts has realised his ambition of taking the Scotland team to the World Cup Finals in his homeland next summer. An excellent 3-0 win over Norway at Hampden has guaranteed that Scotland will finish top of Group Three. Two goals from Gary Naysmith, the first from the penalty spot, and a third from Gary McCutcheon did the trick and takes the team through with only one defeat in their 8 qualifying games.

Déjà Vu All Over Again For Pars

Having suffered a 5-0 defeat by Celtic in the League Cup it must have seemed like Groundhog Day to Dunfermline as they were once again outplayed, losing 4-0 on this occasion. Celtic chose to field a weakened team as key players were rested for Tuesday’s Champions League game but they were still far too strong for the visitors. Alan Johnston opened the scoring with Gary Teale adding a second before the break. After the interval Teale scored his second and Jamie Buchan wrapped up the scoring near the end before hobbling off with a knee injury.

Celts Triumph In Zurich

Celtic put in a fine European performance last night to defeat FC Zurich 4-0 and put themselves in pole position to move on to the next group phase in the Champions League. Goals from Gary McCutcheon, Mark Kerr and Stephen Pearson made the match safe before the break. McCutcheon added his second of the game inside the last 10 minutes to notch his 5th Champions League goal of the season. With Real Madrid held scoreless at PSV, Celtic need a point from their next two games to progress.

Sweet Revenge For Celts

Celtic avenged their opening day defeat at the hands of Dundee United with a comprehensive 3-0 win at Celtic Park in last night’s televised game. After an even first half hour the balance tipped in Celtic’s favour when United defender Kevin McKenna received his second yellow card and left for an early bath. United held out until 10 minutes into the second period when Colin Cameron, on for the injured Kiegan Parker, broke the deadlock. Gary McCutcheon scored two more as United tired in the final stages of the game.

Celtic Through To Next Phase

A 1-0 win at PSV last night was more than enough to ensure that Celtic progress to the next set of group matches in the Champions League. Gary McCutcheon scored the only goal in a disappointingly poor game. Real Madrid beat FC Zurich 3-0 to move into second place but they need to beat Celtic in Glasgow to guarantee further progress.
