Love Street Draw Good Enough

A 1-1 draw at home to CSKA Sofia was good enough for St. Mirren to progress to the UEFA Cup 2nd Round. The visitors took an early lead to square the tie but still faced elimination on the away goals rule. But Francis Duku scored an equaliser just before half time and Gordon Strachan’s team were able to hold on for the aggregate win.

Mac The Knife Does It Again

A single Gary McCutcheon goal was enough to end Motherwell’s brave resistance at Fir Park and give Celtic a narrow 1-0 win. Home keeper Myles Hogarth looked to be in unbeatable form until McCutcheon finally got the better of him in the 81st minute. With 7 goals in 7 games it looks like the Celtic hitman is on track for another stellar season for the Hoops.

Scotland Off To A Flier

Scotland got their 2006 World Cup qualifying campaign off to a flying start with a 3-0 win over Croatia at Hampden Park yesterday in one of the best performances of Berti Vogts troubled reign. An excellent team performance restricted the visitors attacking options and goals from captain Christian Dailly, Mark Burchill and Kevin Kyle capped off a wonderful afternoon.

Malta No Trouble For Berti’s Boys

Scotland recorded their second win in 4 days as they travelled back from Malta with a good 3-1 victory under their belts. Barry Ferguson opened the scoring after 17 minutes and Kevin Kyle added a second 5 minutes later. However the home side pulled a goal back before half time and when Gary Naysmith was shown a red card just before the interval a collapse was on the cards. But Kyle calmed the nerves with his second just after the restart and the team held on comfortably for the win.

Kerr Treble Sees Off Buddies

A superb hat trick from midfielder Mark Kerr was the centrepiece of an excellent 4-0 win over St. Mirren by Celtic at Parkhead. The 22-year-old was in unstoppable form and the visiting defence had no answer to his powerful and intelligent running. Goal machine Gary McCutcheon made it 7 goals in 7 games when he added the 4th near the end of the game.

No Slip Up In Greece For Celts

Two goals from Man of the Match Gary McCutcheon made sure that Celtic came back from their potentially tricky trip to Olympiakos with a fine 2-1 win in the first Champions League group game. The home side were captained by former Celtic player Stilian Petrov but he got little joy from a determined Celtic midfield. McCutcheon opened the scoring in the 29th minute but the Greeks struck back almost immediately to equalise. But the Celtic striker scored again on 55 and the visitors held firm to take maximum points. In the other game in the group Inter had a narrow 1-0 win at home to Nantes.

Even Stevens At Parkhead

Celtic held visiting Inter Milan to a creditable 1-1 draw in last night’s Champions League group game at Celtic Park. Inter opened the scoring on 40 minutes when Javier Zanetti scored with a low shot but the home side evened things up through Gary McCutcheon with less than 15 minutes remaining. On balance the Scots will be disappointed with the result as both McCutcheon and Kiegan Parker hit the woodwork. In the other group match Nantes made heavy weather of beating visiting Olympiakos despite the Greeks being reduced to 9 men in the first half.

Ten-Man Rangers Hold Out

Rangers central defender Marvin Andrews went from hero to villain in yesterday’s televised Old Form encounter at Celtic Park. He scored what turned out to be the only goal of the game after 25 minutes but was then dismissed in the second half for a dangerous two-footed challenge. But a below-par Celtic were unable to take advantage of their extra man and barely troubled Sander Westerveld in the Rangers goal. Celtic are now tied on 18 points with Rangers and Livingston but head the table on goal difference.

Nantes Make Their Point

Celtic returned from their trip to France with a 1-1 draw with Nantes. In what was a very even contest the home side opened the scoring 10 minutes after the break and their resistance was only broken when James McFadden scored from the penalty spot in the 81st minute. The point is enough to put Celtic top of their group but Milan now have a game in hand over the Scots.

Alan Is the Main Man For Pars

A vintage performance by 36-year-old Dunfermline keeper Alan Main was instrumental in his team gaining a valuable if unexpected point in an exciting 2-2 draw at home to Celtic yesterday. Kevin Twaddle scored his first goal for Dunfermline since his move from Hearts at the start of the season to give the home side the lead shortly before half time. Celtic pressed hard for the equaliser but were kept at bay until Gary McCutcheon scored after an hour. When Gary Teale added a second 15 minutes later it looked like curtains for Dunfermline but they kept plugging away and were rewarded when Danny Hatcher found the net with less than 10 minutes remaining. Main kept his team in it with half a dozen terrific stops through the game and, not for the first time this season, he demonstrated that there is certainly life in the old dog yet.

Celtic Euro Hopes Still Alive

A deflected shot from Kenny Miller 10 minutes from time kept Celtic’s Champions League campaign intact as they fought out a 1-1 draw at home to Nantes last night. The visitors took an early lead when Ariza Makukula socred with less that 5 minutes on the clock. Celtic worked hard to get back into the game but seemed to lack their usual attacking fluency. Their cause wasn’t helped by an excellent goalkeeping display from Nantes captain Mickael Landreau. With time running out Tick Jones made his last throw of the dice by removing captain Paul Lambert and introducing Miller as an extra attacker. This paid of within minutes of the change being made as the substitute finally beat Landreau thanks to a wicked deflection off the unfortunate Sylvain Armand. In the other game in this group Inter were kept scoreless at Olympiakos and stay top, two points clear of Celtic who remain one point clear of Nantes.

Ten-Man Celts In Champions League Drama

Celtic somehow came through an incident-packed encounter with Olympiakos at Parkhead last night with the three points required to keep their Champions League hopes alive. Gary McCutcheon gave the home side the boost of an early goal, finding the net after 11 minutes. But the visitors struck back twice before half time with Damir Cakar and Kwame Ayew scoring the goals. When Celtic captain Paul Lambert was dismissed on 41 minutes for holding back Ayew things looked grim for the home side. But no one can doubt the fighting qualities of Tick Jones’s team and in the second half they set about the visitors with a vengeance. The Olympiakos goal remained intact thanks to a string of fine saves from Juraj Bucek and a couple of desperate goal line clearances whilst at the other end Ayew had a scoring effort disallowed because of an offside decision. With 15 minutes remaining Jackie McNamara squared the game with a powerful shot to keep Celtic’s hopes alive but as we moved into stoppage time it looked as though the win was just out of reach. Then substitute Alan Johnston was felled in the area by Stelios Venetidis who was red-carded for the foul. 22-year-old Stephen Pearson took responsibility for the spot kick and calmly sent it into the bottom corner for a vital 3-2 win. With Inter falling to a 1-0 defeat in Nantes the group is now wide open with Celtic on 9 points and Inter and Nantes both on 8 points. Celtic now visit Inter in a fortnight knowing that a point will send them through to the second phase – a point that they will have to find without their hugely influential captain who will be serving a one-match suspension.

Gers In Euro Win

Rangers completed a fine victory over Portuguese giants Benfica in the UEFA Cup 2nd round last night. Their scoreless draw at Ibrox was enough for Alex McLeish’s side to progress on away goals after the 1-1 draw in Lisbon in the first leg. Dundee United were not so fortunate, failing to capitalise on their 0-0 result in Villarreal by going down 2-1 at Tannadice. Sunderland lost 1-0 in Parma but progressed 2-1 on aggregate and a 1-1 draw in Lisbon was good enough for Chelsea to go through 2-1 overall against Sporting.

Rudderless Dons All At Sea

Having dismissed manager Steve Parkin last week after less than 10 months at the helm, the good ship Aberdeen is in serious danger of sinking into the First Division if they continue to put in performances as poor as this. They failed to register a single goal attempt on their visit to Celtic Park and suffered a 5-0 defeat. Stephen Pearson and Gary McCutcheon both grabbed braces and Mark Kerr helped himself to a single as Celtic condemned Aberdeen to their 8th league defeat of the season. Celtic Crash Out Of Champions League

Requiring just a draw to progress to the second phase, Celtic slumped to a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Inter at the San Siro stadium in Milan last night. They made most of the early running but fell behind to a goal from Luigi Di Biagio after 19 minutes. The Celtic midfield looked laboured and sluggish and the influence of captain Paul Lambert was clearly missed as replacement Michael Stewart struggled to make an impact. Gary McCutcheon was unlucky not to square the game before half time but his shot on the turn came back off the post. Inter got their second with 20 minutes remaining through Rafael van der Vaart and with Jaap Stam and Ivan Cordoba dominant at the back Celtic never looked like getting back on terms. A 2-1 win for Nantes at Olympiakos ensured that the French finished second ion the group behind Milan and consigned Celtic to the UEFA Cup safety net.

A goal deep into stoppage time by Gary McCutcheon gave Celtic a share of the points as visiting Motherwell came close to a stunning victory. With the stadium clock showing 90 minutes Motherwell were in dreamland when experienced midfielder David Hagen scored his first goal since his move from Dunfermline in August. But you can never rule out this determined Celtic team and with the three minutes of stoppage time allowed almost at an end, McCutcheon popped up to net his 26th goal of the season and give the home side a dramatic 2-2 draw.

Celtic Young Guns Do The Business

Celtic took a big step towards the UEFA Cup 4th round with a 2-0 defeat of Rangers at Parkhead last night. Celtic’s midfield trio of Stephen Pearson (22), Mark Fotheringham (21) and Mark Kerr (22) held the key to a fine win. After a scoreless first half during which Rangers keeper Sander Westerveld was outstanding, Celtic made the breakthrough when Pearson coolly converted a penalty after 52 minutes after defender Craig Moore was penalised for a lunging tackle on Gary McCutcheon. Celtic racked up yet another comfortable three points with a 4-0 defeat of Ross County at Victoria Park. With Shaun Maloney having impressed in the midweek League Cup tie he kept his starting place, playing behind McCutcheon as a withdrawn striker. Maloney it was who set up the opening goal, teeing up Paul Lambert for his first of the season after just 2 minutes. Celtic Triumph in Almondvale Thriller

Celtic maintained their fine league form with a 4-2 defeat of Livingston in the Boxing Day fixture at Almondvale. A frantic first half produced 5 goals and a red card and with Livvy striking the woodwork twice and Celtic having a disallowed goal the score could have been higher. Mark Kerr got the show on the road when he put Celtic into the lead after just 4 minutes. Westerveld Sees Red In Old Firm Derby

A red card for Sander Westerveld proved to be the defining moment in a tumultuous Old Firm match at Celtic Park last night. Both teams entered the game on the back of unbeaten runs – Rangers had not lost in 11 games, Celtic in 19. There was little to choose between the teams all the way through and when Kieran Richardson put Rangers ahead with 20 minutes remaining that looked like being the only goal of the game. Then came Westerveld’s dramatic intervention – in a one on one situation with Gary McCutcheon he was adjudged to have clipped the ankles of the Celtic striker. He was dismissed and a penalty was awarded. To make matters worse Rangers had already used their last substitute a minute or two earlier and central defender Marvin Andrews was chosen to pull on the gloves. His next task was to pick the ball out of the net after Stephen Pearson calmly sent the big man the wrong way. It was then backs to the wall as the 9 outfield players did their best to protect the rookie keeper. With less than a minute left on the clock their brave efforts failed when Gary McCutcheon volleyed home to notch his 100th league goal for Celtic. With both sides playing positive football there were chances at either end and both keepers excelled with a string of fine saves.

Celtic No Friends Of The Buddies

A much-changed Celtic team was still too strong for St. Mirren in the league encounter at Celtic Park yesterday afternoon. Any hopes that Gordon Strachan may have had of his team taking advantage to continue their push for a place in Europe next season were dashed when Alan Johnston and Stephen Simmons gave Celtic a 2-0 lead before the break. Paul Shields added a 3rd in the second half and the 3-0 win keeps Celtic 4-points clear at the top of the table.
