Old Firm Triumph For Celtic

Celtic turned around a one-goal deficit to run out 4-2 winners in the televised Old Firm encounter at Celtic Park yesterday. Matt Holland gave Rangers an early lead with a goal after just 8 minutes and for the remainder of the first half Celtic struggled to get into their attacking rhythm. But 10 minutes after the restart the game turned when Rangers keeper Jesper Christiansen was adjudged to have brought down Gary McCutcheon in the area. Celtic defender Eddie Forrest calmly sent the young Dane the wrong way to tie the scores. Then in a devastating 6 minute spell the home side scored three more goals with Colin Cameron bagging two and the excellent Don Hutchison getting his first of the season. Shota Averladze scored a late consolation for the visitors but this devastating defeat leaves Rangers fifth in the table, 11 points behind Celtic and struggling.

Gary Mac Back On Target

Celtic striker Gary McCutcheon broke his recent goal drought by scoring the first two goals in his team’s 4-0 win at Dundee last night. He was denied a hat trick by a tight offside decision but with Eddie Forrest and Don Hutchison both finding the back of the net that made no difference to the final outcome.

Ton-Up For McCutcheon

Gary McCutcheon scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win for Celtic over Aberdeen at Parkhead yesterday to reach a landmark of 100th career goal. Dons keeper David Gvaramadze was in excellent form and repelled Celtic’s best efforts for the rest of the game but his teammates never looked like gaining an equaliser.

Srnicek Red Card Costs Motherwell Dear

Celtic finally came out of an eventful encounter against Motherwell at Fir Park with a 3-2 win but not before Terry Butcher’s side had given them something to think about. Mark Kerr scored an early opener with a piledriver from distance to give the visitors an excellent start. However, former Celt John Hartson found an equaliser after 20 minutes and Georgian defender Levan Silagadze put ‘Well ahead before half time. But the game was turned on its head just minutes after the restart when veteran Czech keeper Pavel Srnicek was dismissed after felling Gary McCutcheon in the box. Eddie Forrest coolly converted the spot kick to bring Celtic level and within 5 minutes McCutcheon scored what would prove to be the winning goal. Celtic were unlucky on the injury front however, with influential midfielder Charlie Miller and defender Eddie Forrest both sustaining damage. Miller will miss a fortnight but Forrest could be out for several months with a torn groin muscle. This is a real blow for the 24-year-old as he had been getting established as a first-team regular recently.

Super Mac Hits Three In Old Firm Encounter

A hat trick by Celtic striker Gary McCutcheon ensured that Celtic underlined their domestic superiority in a 4-2 defeat of Rangers at Ibrox in yesterday’s League Cup Quarter Final. It was Colin Cameron that got the ball rolling for the Celts with an opening goal after 17 minutes but Shota Averladze found an equaliser 10 minutes later. Then McCutcheon struck twice before half time to take Celtic into the break 3-1 ahead. However, Kieran Richardson gave Rangers hope with a fine goal shortly after the restart. But barely 5 minutes had elapsed before Super Mac got his third of the afternoon to restore Celtic’s two-goal lead.

Livvy Second Best At Celtic Park

Currently Scotland’s second-best team according to their league position, Paul Bracewell’s Livingston were a little disappointed in the performance against Celtic yesterday having hoped to give the home team more of a fight. But in truth Celtic were in irresistible form and powered into a 3-0 lead with two goals from Gary McCutcheon and another by Colin Cameron before Paul Sheerin gave the visitors a late consolation. This defeat leaves Livvy 10 points adrift of Celtic having played a game more.

Patterson Out At Aberdeen

Aberdeen boss Steve Patterson was dismissed from his position yesterday evening. With his team struggling badly in 11th place, just a point ahead of Kilmarnock who are in the relegation place, it came as no great surprise that his tenure is now over.

The Celtic Bandwagon Rolls On

Celtic show no sign of easing up in their relentless pursuit of domestic glory and their latest three points came courtesy of a 1-0 defeat of Motherwell at Parkhead. Motherwell keeper Pavel Srnicek managed to last the full 90 minutes this time and it was his excellent performance that kept the scoreline so low. But he was unable to stop Gary Teale from scoring shortly before half time and that single goal proved enough for the win.

The Green Machine March On

Celtic continued their remorseless progress towards the SPL title with a 3-1 defeat of Dunfermline at East End Park yesterday. Defender David Weir scored a rare goal to open Celtic’s account but Stephen Crawford gave the home side some encouragement with a fine equaliser. This proved to be short-lived as Gary McCutcheon and Mark Kerr scored within a minute of one another just before half time.

Super Mac Brings Boxing Day Cheer

The Boxing Day encounter between Celtic and Kilmarnock at Parkhead provided Killie keeper Colin Stewart with as much shooting practice in an afternoon than he would normally see in a week as Celtic pounded his goal for most of the game. It took Gary McCutcheon 47 seconds to notch his 35th goal of the season and 91 minutes later he scored his 36th. In between times the veteran Dennis Wise scored an unlikely equaliser and young Mr. Stewart pulled off save after save. But Mick Harford can have no real complaints about the final result given the balance of play and his team are now 7 points adrift at the foot of the table. Celtic captain Paul Lambert was injured near the end of the game and the prognosis is not positive – strained ankle ligaments will keep him out for at least a month.

United Pay The Penalty

Dundee United welcomed the visit of league leaders Celtic with a hard-working and positive approach that should have brought them some reward. That it failed to do so was due in equal measure to the splendid goalkeeping of Rab Douglas, named as captain in the absence of Paul Lambert, and the two penalties that were gifted to the visitors. Both of them were despatched in style by James McFadden and sandwiched in between them Gary McCutcheon scored his almost inevitable goal. A 3-0 scoreline doesn’t fully reflect the balance of play but United can take encouragement from their efforts.

New Faces At Celtic Park

Celtic boss Tick Jones has been busy in the short winter break and has secured a couple of new playing staff. First to arrive was young forward Steven Craig from Kilmarnock for £1M. And then yesterday we heard about the capture of striker Kenny Miller from Wolves for £6M. Miller’s arrival may give Gary McCutcheon some cause for concern but it’s hard to see how a striker with his level of productivity could possibly be left out. It may be that Jones is planning on a new formation that will allow him to play with two strikers rather than the lone hitman that he currently favours.

Dream Start By Miller

Kenny Miller made an excellent start at his new club by scoring the second goal in Celtic’s comfortable 3-0 defeat of St. Mirren at Parkhead yesterday. The Buddies had managed to keep Celtic at bay for the first half but James McFadden broke the deadlock 10 minutes after the restart. Miller added the second and then Jackie McNamara got his first of the season to round things off. Miller was utilised in an advanced midfield position playing behind Gary McCutcheon, a role that Gary Teale had been settling into nicely before Miller’s arrival.

Derby Joy For Jones

Tick Jones was absolutely delighted with the latest Old Firm victory for his team, a 2-1 win at Ibrox that takes his team 20 points clear at the top of the table. Brian McAllister opened the scoring for the visitors with his first of the season and Kenny Miller added a second before the break. Shota Averladze pulled one back for Rangers but Celtic held on comfortably for the win despite losing Miller to injury shortly after the restart. The Celtic new boy will be out for up to three weeks – a pity given the excellent start he had made at his new team.

Hibs Lose Out Again

Not many teams would savour the thought of playing Celtic twice in a week and Hibs are no exception. Following on from their defeat in the Scottish Cup last weekend, they lost again as Celtic left Easter Road with a 4-2 win. But a mighty exciting encounter it was as the home side did their level best to stop the Celtic juggernaut. The visitors powered into a two-goal lead inside 15 minutes through Gary McCutcheon, his 40th of the season, and Don Hutchison. However Hibs came back strongly and goals from Rodney Cairo and David Graham had them back on level terms within 5 minutes. But Celtic just will not be denied at present and a second goal from McCutcheon, this one his 100th for Celtic, put them back in front on the half hour. When Gary Tale was sent tumbling in the area in first half stoppage time and James McFadden slotted home the penalty it was game over.

A Tale Of Two Keepers

The League Cup Semi Final between Dunfermline and Celtic at Hampden Park last night ended in a narrow 1-0 win for Celtic thanks to a James McFadden penalty on the stroke of half time. Dunfermline keeper Paul Robinson, on loan from Leeds United, was in such outstanding form that a penalty looked like the only way that the 24-year-old would be beaten. Celtic carved out any number of chances and hit the woodwork twice in the first 10 minutes, but Robinson was equal to the challenge. Dunfermline themselves created a number of excellent openings and Celtic keeper Rab Douglas also excelled with some brilliant saves. In the other Semi Final local rivals Dundee and Dundee United played out an exciting contest at Easter Road with United coming back from two behind to force extra time. With the scores still tied at the end of the extra period the game was finally decided on a penalty shootout and Dundee triumphed 5-3 with Craig Easton the poor unfortunate to miss the critical kick for United.

Parker Wins It For Celts

A fiercely contested Scottish Cup 4th round tie between Kilmarnock and Celtic at Rugby Park was finally settled by a Kiegan Parker goal 15 minutes from time. The momentum of the match swung one way and then the other as both side competed strongly for the win. The evergreen Dennis Wise got the home side to a wonderful start when he found the net after just 3 minutes. But 20 minutes later Celtic were right back in it after Wise was adjudged to have brought down Parker in the area. The Kilmarnock players disputed the decision claiming that the Celtic man had dived but referee Mike MacGregor stood firm and Colin Cameron dispatched the kick to even the scores. Minutes later Don Hutchison had the ball in the Kilmarnock net but his effort was flagged for offside. But Gary McCutcheon scored yet another goal before half time to send Celtic into the break 2-1 ahead. Kilmarnock came out after the restart with all guns blazing and Stephen Donnachie scored a deserved equaliser within minutes of the kick off. However, Celtic would not be denied and Parker scored their third goal to gain the win. An offside decision a few minutes before the end denied the youngster a hat trick but Celtic progress through to the Quarter Finals.

A Big Mac Double Does The Trick

Gary McCutcheon’s 43rd and 44th goals of the season provided Celtic with a 2-0 win over Dundee at Parkhead that was much more comprehensive than the scoreline suggests. Dundee keeper Mark Brown was the main reason for the relatively narrow margin of victory and, if the rumours are to be believed, the 22-year-old features high on Tick Jones’s shopping list. The unstoppable McCutcheon opened the scoring after 12 minutes but had to wait until stoppage time to claim his second. It was well worth the wait though as his clinical finish rounded off a passing movement of awesome pace and precision that sliced through the Dundee defence like a hot knife through butter. Recent signing Jim Lauchlan made an assured debut in central defence but in truth the Celtic rearguard had an easy time of it as Dundee failed to muster a single attempt on target all evening.

Celtic Make It Fifteen In A Row To Take Title

Celtic’s 3-1 defeat of Aberdeen at Pittodrie yesterday meant that Tick Jones’s team have now won their last 15 league matches in succession, a new SPL record. It also meant that, with Livingston unable to beat last placed Kilmarnock, Celtic cannot now be overtaken and the SPL title goes to Parkhead. Celtic’s win was as comfortable as the scoreline suggests with Gary McCutcheon scoring twice and Colin Cameron providing the third. The bad news involved injuries to Paul Lambert and Mark Kerr and they will both be absent for a couple of weeks. Securing the league championship this early in the season is an unprecedented achievement and it underlines the domestic superiority of the 100% Scottish Celts.

Rangers March On In Europe

In spite of their mediocre domestic season Rangers continue to defy their critics by making excellent progress in the UEFA Cup and last night a 2-1 defeat of Nantes at Ibrox secured their place in the Quarter Finals after a 1-1 draw in France in the first leg. Alex McLeish’s team could even afford the luxury of a missed penalty as Michael Mols failed to beat the Nantes keeper from the spot just before half time. At that point the scores were tied at 1 apiece and the tie was very finely balanced. The French side took the lead after just 8 minutes but the impressive youngster Kieran Richardson equalised on 22 minutes. Andy Cole scored the decisive second goal 10 minutes after the restart and Rangers held on for the win. Elsewhere in the competition Blackburn failed to capitalise on a good 1-1 draw in the first leg in France as Bordeaux won 2-1 at Ewood Park to go through. Tottenham had an excellent 3-2 win over Dortmund at White Hart Lane but went out 5-3 on aggregate after their 3-0 defeat in the first leg. And in one of the night’s most dramatic ties, Newcastle lost out to Hannover 96 after extra time. With the aggregate score standing at 3-3 after normal time, Guus Hiddink saw his team collapse in the extra period, conceding three goals to go out 6-3 overall.

Celtic Cruise Into Semis

Celtic recorded a very comfortable 2-0 win over Airdrie United at New Broomfield in yesterday’s Scottish Cup Quarter Final match. The visitors dominated proceedings and Airdrie were reduced to some desperate defending at times. They almost reached the break unscathed but five minutes before the break Stephen Crainey scored his first goal of the season with a powerful free kick. Gary McCutcheon had a headed goal chalked off just after the restart because of an offside decision but Don Hutchison added the second on the hour mark to secure the win. In the other games Dundee beat Ayr United 2-0 at Somerset Park, Dundee United had an easy 4-0 home win over Aberdeen but Ross County fought bravely at Ibrox to tie 2-2 with Rangers and force a replay. The highlanders reached last season’s final and clearly have hopes of repeating their remarkable achievement this year.

Two Down, One To Go

Celtic completed the second leg of the domestic treble with a narrow win over Dundee in the League Cup Final yesterday. Dundee provided a shock start to the game when Steven Milne scored after 12 minutes but Celtic hit back almost immediately as Gary McCutcheon equalised just two minutes later. The game then developed into a personal duel between McCutcheon and Mark Brown with Celtic’s prolific striker being denied time and again by the impressive young keeper. Dundee defended in depth and looked to hit Celtic on the break and as time ticked away it looked like their approach would at least take them to extra time. But two minutes into stoppage time Don Hutchison finally found a way past Brown to clinch a 2-1 victory. With the league title already secured Celtic are now two games away from a terrific treble.

No Joy For Pars At Parkhead

Despite playing what could be described as a Celtic reserve team at Parkhead last night Dunfermline could not profit and lost to the only goal of the game scored by Mark Fotheringham. There were a number of unfamiliar faces in the Celtic lineup as Tick Jones now seems to be using the remaining league fixtures to give his fringe players first team experience. Jamie Langfield had a solid game in goal and Eddie Forrest made a welcome return in central defence after his injury layoff. Brave County Pay The Penalty

A fighting performance by a courageous Ross County team was undermined by two unfortunate penalty incidents in yesterday’s Scottish Cup Semi Final against Celtic. The first happened on the stroke of half time with the game still scoreless as County keeper Matt Boswell made contact with Gary Teale as the midfielder was going past him. Boswell was red-carded and Martin Wood was taken off to allow veteran replacement keeper Vince Bartram to come on. Paul Ritchie coolly converted the spot kick to give Celtic a scarcely deserved lead. This was without doubt the turning point in the game as County had acquitted themselves very capably up to that point. Worse was to follow when a second spot kick was awarded 10 minutes into the second half when Allan Grant was adjudged to have pushed Mark Kerr. Ritchie took responsibility again and had no problem in netting his second of the game to make the final score 2-0 to Celtic. The other Semi saw Dundee United overcome neighbours Dundee 2-0 at Easter Road.

Kerr Hat Trick Sinks Rangers

A superb hat trick from Celtic midfielder Mark Kerr was the high point in Celtic’s 4-0 win in the final Old Firm match of the season. The 22-year-old has been in outstanding form this season and is a key component in Celtic’s success. Rangers looked dispirited as they took the field at Parkhead and rarely put together any football of quality to trouble the Celtic rearguard. Stephen Pearson was the home team’s other scorer, converting a penalty in the second half after Stephen Hughes had brought down Gary McCutcheon in the area. Season Review

Welcome to our annual roundup of the season just completed in Scotland and around Europe. In Scotland, Celtic demonstrated in spectacular style that Scottish playing talent is alive and well by winning the domestic treble. They won the SPL by a record points margin, just failing to break the 100-point barrier. Their European campaign was less successful and having reached the UEFA Cup Semi Finals last season they were disappointed to finish bottom of their Champions League qualifying group. Their manager Tick Jones was voted Manager of the Year and their players almost completed a clean sweep of the player’s awards.

The final leagues tables for all four divisions are shown below.

Hutch Calls It A Day

Don Hutchison has announced his decision to hang up his boots with immediate effect. The 33-year-old was signed by Celtic 3 seasons ago from West Ham and although he never established his place in the first team he made 47 appearances scoring 14 goals. He gained 19 caps for Scotland and since starting his playing career at Hartlepool he made 349 senior appearances and scored 60 goals during his career. This follows the recent decision of 36-year-old John Collins to retire from the playing side although he will remain at Celtic on the coaching staff.

Brazilian Magic Wins It For Rangers

Rangers latest signing Juninho, who joined from Middlesbrough in a £2.2M move less than a week ago, became an instant hero at Ibrox last night after a brilliant hat trick helped his new team to a 4-2 win in the Champions League 2nd round qualifier against Atlantas of Lithuania.

Celtic Upset In Season Opener

Livingston produced an upset at Almondvale in their televised encounter with Celtic last night when they pulled off a terrific 3-1 win. Celtic took the lead on the half hour through Gary McCutcheon but Livingston struck back with second-half goals from Richard Barr, Rolando Zarate and Barry Wilson to send the defending champions back to Glasgow empty-handed.

No Goals Good Enough For Rangers

A scoreless draw in Lithuania last night was good enough for Rangers to progress to the 3rd qualifying round of the champions league as they eliminated Atlantas 4-2 on aggregate. They will face Athletic Bilbao of Spain with Celtic taking on Puchov of Slovakia.

Celtic Back On Track

Celtic shrugged off the disappointment of their opening day defeat by recording a comfortable 3-0 win at home to Inverness Caledonian. Jackie McNamara, Brian McAlister and Gary McCutcheon were all on target for the Celts and they could even afford the luxury of a missed penalty from Kiegan Parker. Only a solid performance between the sticks by Caley keeper Craig Nelson kept the score respectable as Inverness struggled to make any impression on a powerful Celtic team.

Good Night In Europe For Old Firm

Rangers beat Athletic Bilbao 2-1 at Ibrox and will travel to Spain hopeful of holding on to their advantage. Celtic beat FX Matador Puchov 2-0 in Slovakia with Gary McCutcheon providing the goals and look likely to progress after such a good result.

Dons Done In By Celtic Power

Aberdeen found visitors Celtic just too hot to handle at Pittodrie yesterday. Gary McCutcheon gave Celtic the lead after 14 minutes but Aberdeen’s Icelandic star Calum Bett found an equaliser just 4 minutes later. However, parity didn’t last long as McCutcheon scored his second of the game five minutes later. Mark Kerr wrapped up the points with a goal in the second half to give the visitors a well-deserved 3-1 win.

Brown Dismissal Makes The Difference

Dundee keeper Mark Brown was sent off 25 minutes into their game at Celtic Park when he clipped the heels of Gary Teale. Replacement Derek Soutar couldn’t stop Paul Ritchie’s well-taken penalty but he spent the rest of the match repelling everything that the Celtic attack could throw at him. However the 1-0 win is enough to take Celtic to the top of the table as pacesetters Livingston fought out a 3-3 thriller at Dundee United.

Celtic Through But Rangers Just Lose Out

Celtic have reached the group stages of the Champions League after beating Puchov 2-0 at Celtic Park last night. Already 2-0 ahead from the first leg their task was made easier when the visitors had a man sent off after half an hour. Second half goals from Gary Teale and Gary McCutcheon eased them to a 4-0 aggregate win. It was a different story for Rangers in Bilbao however. They too were facing 10 men after the Spanish side had a player dismissed just 6 minutes into the game. Despite dominating play Rangers just couldn’t break through a stubborn defence and with 20 minutes remaining they were hit with a sucker punch when Athletic scored a breakaway goal to even the aggregate scores and progress on away goals. Rangers now drop into the UEFA Cup and Celtic have been drawn in Group H for the first phase games alongside Inter, Nantes and Olympiakos.
