Eight Goal Thriller At Celtic Park

The Celtic fans and players endured an emotional roller coaster at Parkhead during their UEFA Cup encounter with Feyenoord. A thrilling game finally finished in an incredible 4-4 draw as the advantage swung from team to team. Paul Shields, later voted Man of the Match for his performance, got Celtic off to a great start when he opened the scoring after just 8 minutes. This tied the aggregate score at 2 apiece but with Celtic having the advantage of an away goal. But 10 minutes before half time Feyenoord struck back with two goals inside a minute. The first came from ex-Celtic striker Pierre van Hooijdonk who prodded home the rebound after Rab Douglas had spilled the big striker’s initial header. And then as the game restarted Paul Shields was caught in possession by Anthony Lurling who dispossessed the youngster and then ran straight at the heart of the Celtic defence. He left Jackie McNamara for dead and dummied Douglas into committing himself before sliding the ball into the empty net. The visitors were 4-2 ahead on aggregate and Celtic had a mountain to climb. But the home side set about their task and shortly before half time the excellent Stephen McManus made it 2-2 on the night when he finished off a slick passing move. But 5 minutes into the second half the visitors were back in font when South Korean Song Jong-Kook outjumped the Celtic defence to head home a free kick. With Feyenoord now ahead 5-3 on aggregate Celtic needed to score 3 more goals. Shields got one of them 8 minutes later with his second of the evening to give the fans hope. But it was back to square one again 10 minutes after that when McNamara was sent off for a dangerous two-footed challenge and van Hooijdonk easily converted the resulting penalty. But Celtic refused to give up and a second goal from McManus in 74 minutes tied the scores on the night. Gordon Durie was thrown on as an extra attacker as the 10 men gave it their best shot but the two goals required were beyond them and Feyenoord qualified 6-5 on aggregate.

Broto Denies Celts

An outstanding display of goalkeeping by Livingston’s Javier Sanchez Broto helped the home side pick up a valuable point in a scoreless draw at Almondvale yesterday. Despite their brave effort Livvy are still bottom of the table 8 points behind Partick Thistle and they will require many more performances like this to escape relegation. Celtic lost two players to injury in a frustrating match for them as both Paul Shields and Allan Johnston were forced to retire from the game.

Gallacher Rolls Back The Years

35-year-old Kevin McAllister showed the Celtic youngsters that he still has an eye for goal as he rounded off an excellent performance with Celtic’s second goal in their 2-0 defeat of Dundee United. 20-year-old left back Stephen Crainey had opened the scoring in the first half with his first goal for the club before Gallacher struck for his 7th of the season. With Paul Richie looking assured in central defence and captain Paul Lambert as reliable as ever, the home side were rarely threatened by the visitors.

Jukebox A Hit At Parkhead

Gordon “Jukebox†Durie showed that, at 36, he can still find the back of the net as he scored twice in Celtic’s fine 4-0 defeat of Partick Thistle. With Mark Kerr pulling the strings in midfield and captain Paul Lambert guarding the back four, Celtic were in total control of this match. The outstanding Kerr opened the scoring after just 5 minutes as Celtic started out at a gallop. It was testament to the skills of Thistle keeper Kenny Arthur that it took the best part of 40 minutes before Celtic scored again. The second goal came from midfielder Charlie Miller who put in one of his better performances yesterday. Durie grabbed Celtic’s third on the stroke of half time to give the home side a comfortable lead at the break. Kerr was a constant threat to the visitors in the second half and could easily have added to his own tally before he set up Durie for his second and Celtic’s 4th.

Nice work Bob, its interestig to see so many veterans lining up - just wondered (as an Englishman who is partial to the Pars) whether you've been tempted to try and pry Stevie Crawford away from East End Park?

Keep it up anyway icon_smile.gif

Thanks Flip. I brought in the older players because a)They were available, b)I thought that they could do a job of work for a season and c)With so many youngsters in the first team that the experienced players would help their development. I haven't gone for Crawford, mainly because in this particular game he isn't showing much good form at present.

Kerr Spares Celtic Blushes

A last-gasp equaliser from Celtic wonder kid Mark Kerr denied Kilmarnock the win that their enterprising play had fully deserved. The home side maintained a positive attitude throughout and refused to be overawed by the visit of the league leaders. The Kilmarnock defence certainly had the better of the Celtic attack and as the game entered the last few minutes, a scoreless draw looked the most likely result. But then with 2 minutes remaining Scotland U21 international James Fowler scored with an unstoppable shot. Then to the great disappointment of a sellout home crowd, Kerr snatched a dramatic equaliser with virtually the last kick of the match.

McCutcheon Double Sinks Dons

Two well-taken goals by Gary McCutcheon was enough for Celticto see off Aberdeen at a cold and wet Pittodrie. The 23-year-old who was released last season by Kilmarnock scored a goal in each half in an impressive performance. The home side weren’t without chances of their own, with Rab Douglas denying Chris Clark with a fine save in the second half. Celtic’s afternoon was marred by a nasty injury to Jamie Smith just before the break. The 21-year-old has damaged his ankle ligaments and will likely miss the rest of the season.

McCutcheon Hurt In Celtic Win

Celtic recorded a comfortable 3-1 win over Motherwell at Celtic Park but lost the services of in-form striker Gary McCutcheon for 10 days. Having scored Celtic’s third goal after half an hour he limped off injured just before half time. Midfielders Charlie Miller and Mark Fotheringham dominated thr play in midfield. They both scored inside the first 20 minutes and provided the platform on which the win was based. Motherwell pulled a goal back in the second half but never threatened to make up the arrears.

New Year Cheer For Celtic

Celtic achieved a fine 3-1 win over Dundee United at Tannadice in yesterday’s encounter and now have a 7-point lead over nearest rivals Rangers. Once again a top display by the young midfield trio of Charlie Miller, Mark Kerr and Mark Fotheringham was the key. They each bagged a goal and their running, passing and movement left the home side without an answer. Mark Kerr opened the scoring on the half hour but the experienced Billy Dodds equalised for United before half time. But in the second half Celtic were much the stronger team and Miller put them ahead after an hour with Fotheringham sealing the win with 5 minutes remaining.

Poom Keeps Celts At Bay

As the SPL got back into competitive action after the short winter break a brilliant display of goalkeeping by Mart Poom enabled Hearts to keep a clean sheet on their visit to Celtic Park. The big Estonian has just arrived at the club on loan from Sunderland for the rest of the season and on this display he looks like being a very valuable addition. The visitors endured long spells of pressure from Celtic and Gary McCutcheon, back from injury, was denied on several occasions by Poom’s large frame. And then in the 72nd minute Thomas Flogel stole the points for the visitors with a goal totally against the run of play. This was only Celtic’s third league defeat of the season and with Rangers getting a narrow win over last placed Livingston, Celtic’s lead is now cut to 4 points.

Dream Debut For Buchan

Celtic’s latest signing Jamie Buchan made his first start for the club, replacing Stephen Crainey in the left wingback position. He got off to a great start by scoring what proved to be the only goal of the game in the Scottish Cup 3rd Round tie against Aberdeen at Pittodrie. The home team will feel unfortunate not to have taken anything from this game as they had the better of the play and created several good chances. But with Celtic captain Paul Lambert outstanding in his deep-lying midfield role, the Dons could find no way through. Celtic will play Motherwell at Fir Park in the 4th Round.

Dundee Hold Celts

Dundee underlined their credentials as the third best team in Scotland with a battling 1-1 draw at Celtic Park. The visitors put in a spirited performance and will consider themselves unfortunate not to have taken all 3 points. Their front two of Steven Milne and Fabio Caballero were a constant threat and Colin Hendry and Brian McAllister had their work cut out to contain them. Alan Johnston opened the scoring for Celtic on 37 minutes but Milne equalised in stoppage time at the end of the first half. Dundee had the better of the second period as Celtic struggled to gain a grip of midfield. The absence of Mark Kerr through injury was clearly a factor and Celtic will be keen to get him back into action as soon as possible. There was more injury news for Celtic as Jackie McNamara had to be replaced in the second half and is likely to be out for 3 weeks with a knee problem.

Celtic Win 8-Goal Thriller

Last night Celtic visited East End Park to play Dunfermline and eventually gained the three points that they were looking for as they triumphed 5-3. A brilliant performance by Dunfermline striker Steven Hampshire kept the Celtic defence on their toes and he opened the scoring after just 4 minutes. However, two goals from Alan Johnston gave the lead to Celtic after half an hour. Charlie Miller put them 3-1 ahead but two minutes later Danny Hatcher made it 3-2. A goal from Paul Shields 4 minutes from time secured the points but didn’t’ end the scoring as first Stephen McManus and then Hampshire both notched goals in stoppage time.

Rangers Triumph In Old Firm Clash

Yesterday Rangers got revenge for the 3-0 defeat inflicted upon them at Celtic Park back in November with a fine 2-0 win over their archrivals. This result sees Rangers at the top of the table for only the second time this season. With new player/coach John Collins making his debut, Celtic started well and Klos was the busier of the two keepers for the first half hour. But when Matt Holland put Rangers ahead on 27 minutes against the run of play, the home side began to take control. On the stroke of half time the 17-year-old wonder kid Kieran Richardson scored a contender for goal of the season as he carved his way through the Celtic ranks and powered a shot home. Celtic worked hard in the second half to get back into the game. They created some good chances but good play by Klos and poor finishing up front meant a frustrating afternoon for manager Tick Jones.

Celts Leave It Late

A late strike by substitute Gary McCutcheon gave Celtic a narrow 3-2 win over Dundee United to set up an Old Firm League Cup Final next month. United gave as good as they got in an enthralling encounter at the supposedly neutral venue of Ibrox Stadium. Jim Paterson gave the Tangerines a very early lead and Celtic had to wait until first half stoppage time before Charlie Miller evened things up. Ten minutes after the break the excellent Brian McAllister scored his first goal for the club to put Celtic ahead but ten minutes after that Kevin McGowne made it 2-2. And then Gary McCutcheon, on for an ineffective Paul Shields, grabbed the winner with 4 minutes remaining. United will consider themselves unlucky to have conceded so late in the game but full marks to Celtic for their tenacity. In the other Semi Final between Rangers and Kilmarnock, played at Celtic park ironically, the Gers won by the same scoreline in another very entertaining match.

Well, Well, Well – The Celts Go Out Of The Cup

Motherwell produced a major upset yesterday when they beat Celtic 1-0 at Fir Park to progress to the Scottish Cup 5th Round. For the second match in succession Celtic conceded an early goal, this time to David Partridge after just 3 minutes. They spent the rest of the game huffing and puffing to recover the situation but some woeful finishing, together with fine goalkeeping by Ian Dunbavin, left them disappointed. Don Hutchison, of all people, was guilty of the most glaring miss of the match, somehow contriving to stab the ball wide when presented with a totally unguarded net. That miss typified an afternoon that Tick Jones and his players will be anxious to forget.

Celtic got back to their attacking best with a vengeance as they mauled Kilmarnock 6-2 at Celtic Park yesterday. The in-form Gary McCutcheon hit a hat trick and 18-year-old Mark Fotheringham bagged a brace in a terrific display of attacking power. Paul Richie chipped in with a penalty after Robbie Henderson was dismissed for a professional foul. Celtic were 3-0 up at half time and added two more after the break before Andy McLaren and Sean Hessey got two late consolation goals. McCutcheon completed his hat trick in stoppage time to notch his 10th of the season. Hibs and Celtic played out a scoreless draw yesterday that was nowhere near as dull as the scoreline might suggest. Rab Douglas also played well in the Celtic goal but Hibs will feel unlucky not to have taken the three points having twice hit the woodwork. Celtic Win League Cup Shootout

Celtic won the League Cup yesterday beating Rangers 4-3 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes. Rangers played the majority of the match with 10 men after Michael Ball was sent off in the 56th minute following his second yellow card of the game. Celtic created by far the greater number of chances but poor finishing meant that less than a quarter of their efforts hit the target. When the Celtic attack did find the target Stefan Klos was always there to deny their efforts. Referee Gordon MacKay denied the Celts three very strong penalty appeals during the course of the game so on balance, Celtic just about deserved their win. This victory brings Chairman Brian Quinn his first trophy since his controversial “Scots-only†policy was introduced at the start of this season.

5-Star Celtic Blitz Livvy

After finding themselves 4-0 down at half time Livingston were probably grateful to escape from Celtic Park with just one further goal conceded in the second half. After their weekend exertions in the League Cup final, Celtic fielded a significantly changed team for this league encounter. But Tick Jones’ team was certainly fired up and goals from Charlie Miller, Kevin Gallacher, Gary McCutcheon and John Collins sent them into the break in total control. Less pleasing was an injury to the veteran Tom Boyd, playing in central defence, just two minutes after the restart. He was replaced by Colin Hendry who was himself injured just 10 minutes after his arrival. This caused a significant re-shuffle as Brian McAllister moved into central defence, John Collins moved out to the left side of defence and Paul Lambert came on to play in front of the back two. The excellent David Weir added a fifth and final goal, his first for the club, to round out a fine attacking display.

Late Winner Keeps Title Race Alive

A goal from Gary McCutcheon just 2 minutes from time gave Celtic a 3-2 victory over a brave Motherwell team at Fir Park. Twice the home side battled back with equalising goals and they were indeed somewhat unfortunate not to take something from this game. After a goalless first half Don Hutchison opened his account for Celtic just 3 minutes after the restart. But within five minutes Martyn Corrigan equalised for Motherwell. Then with 15 minutes remaining Alan Johnston gave Celtic the lead once more. But this time it took the home side just 3 minutes to strike back through Agnar Gunnarsson. However, Celtic were not to be denied and McCutcheon’s late strike keeps Celtic just 3 points behind Rangers and with everything still to play for.

Double Hat Trick At Ibrox

Rangers won a sensational Old Firm encounter at Ibrox during which both Shota Arveladze and Gary McCutcheon scored hat tricks. Arveladze opened the scoring on 11 minutes and McCutcheon grabbed an equaliser in first half stoppage time. But in an exhilarating second half Rangers outscored Celtic 3-2 to give them a 4-3 win that virtually guarantees that the tile will go to Ibrox this season. Rangers captain Barry Ferguson scored a brilliant solo effort just after the restart and Arveladze completed his hat trick with two goals in four minutes to give Rangers a seemingly unassailable 4-1 lead with just over 30 minutes remaining. However, Tick Jones’s team are fighters and two goals from McCutcheon in the 79th and 81st minutes made for a grandstand finish. Unfortunately, Celtic couldn’t find a fourth and had to settle for second best in a marvellous match. McCutcheon can consider himself doubly unfortunate as he had a first half strike ruled out following an offside decision. Elsewhere Partick Thistle’s failure to beat Livingston at Firhill means that John Lambie’s team are relegated.

Season Review

Welcome to our annual roundup of the season just completed in Scotland and around Europe. There is no doubt that one of the biggest stories of the season at home was the controversial decision taken by Celtic chairman Brian Quinn to implement a "Scots Only" playing policy. This resulted in the resignation of the hugely popular Martin O’Neill, his replacement by Tick Jones and a great deal of concern for the future by the Parkhead faithful. However, an excellent second place in the league, an unlucky exit from Europe and victory in the League Cup has gone a long way towards calming the fans fears. Celtic sold 16 players in total this season and generated £58M in transfer revenue. On the other side of the balance sheet, 18 players came in at a total cost of £30.5M.

Celtic pushed rivals Rangers all the way but a 17-game unbeaten run by Alex McLeish’s team took the title to Ibrox. The Scottish Cup was won by underdogs Livingston who finished 11th in the Premier League but beat third place Dundee in the final. Partick Thistle were relegated and will be replaced in the SPL by First Division champions St. Mirren. The Challenge Cup was won by First Division Falkirk who defeated Airdrie Utd of Division Two 2-0 in the final.

The final leagues tables for all four divisions are shown below.

Rangers Sign Cole

Yesterday Alex McLeish announced that experience striker Andrew Cole had agreed terms with Rangers allowing his £9.25M transfer from Blackburn to be completed. The 30-year-old scored 13 goals for Joe Kinnear’s side last season.

Howe Announces Surprise Retirement

Celtic coach Don Howe yesterday announced that he was retiring from his position with immediate effect because of health reasons. The 66-year-old was generally considered to have been a hugely influential backroom figure as Celtic set about transforming their playing staff in their audacious “Braveheart Revolutionâ€. Celtic Chairman Brian Quinn said “Everyone at the club is sad to see Don leave us as he has done a marvellous job in the 12 months that he spent with us.â€

Celts Go Greek

Little-known Greek coach Giorgos Pomaski has been appointed to the Celtic coaching staff to replace the just-retired Don Howe. Unheard of in Scotland, Celtic boss Tick Jones is obviously a big fan judging by his reaction to the appointment. “I am thrilled that Giorgos has agreed to become part of the coaching team here at Celtic Park. His top-class coaching skills and knowledge of the game will be of great benefit to the team.â€

Irish So Close

Ireland’s impossible dream was so close to being realised in last night’s World Cup Final, but they were narrowly defeated by a fine Italian team with Andrea Pirlo’s first half goal being just enough to bring victory to Italy. However David O’Leary can be immensely proud of his team’s achievements. They beat Germany, England, Croatia and Denmark along the way and have given hope to their fellow Celts that so-called “small†nations can find success at international level.

UEFA Cup Draw

The draw for the Qualifying round of the UEFA Cup took place yesterday and it's a Scotland against Croatia affair. Celtic have been paired with Osijek and Dundee will face Rijeka. Both teams have been drawn at home for the first leg. Thanks to their Scottish Cup win, Livingston have been seeded and will enter the competition in the First Round proper.

Celtic Off To A Flyer

Celtic got their league campaign off to a flying start in last night’s televised match against Hibs at Easter Road. There was just two minutes on the clock when Gary McCutcheon fired them ahead and it took the evergreen Kevin Gallacher just 6 minutes more to add a second. Charlie Miller provided Celtic’s third goal in the second half with an exquisite free kick. The only negative for Tick Jones’s side was a knock to Paul Richie that saw him replaced by Steven Pressley on the hour mark.

Celtic Cruise Past United

Celtic brushed aside the challenge of Dundee United at Celtic Park yesterday and their 4-0 win takes them to the top of the table. The Tangerines held out until 5 minutes before half time but two goals in quick succession from Gary McCutcheon sent them into the break wondering what had hit them. Mark Fotheringham and Mark Kerr added two more in the second half and the tally would have been greater but for some fine saves by United keeper Alan Combe.

Sutton Heads South

The £1.6M transfer of striker Chris Sutton from Celtic to Middlesbrough was confirmed yesterday. Having spent last season languishing in the reserves thanks to Celtic’s “Scots Only†policy, the big striker is said to be desperate for first team action and is relishing his return to competitive football.

Mixed Fortunes In UEFA Cup

It was good news, bad news in the Scotland/Croatia clashes in last nights UEFA Cup matches. The good news was a 2-0 win for Celtic over Osijek thanks to goals from Mark Kerr and Gary McCutcheon. Their opponents came to defend and provided stubborn resistance. Some determined defending and a solid display by the visiting keeper kept the score respectable. The bad news was a 1-0 defeat for Dundee by Rijeka. The visitors took the lead after quarter of an hour and Dundee failed to find a way back into the game.

Collins Sees Red In Pittodrie Stalemate

Celtic’s John Collins was sent off and Aberdeen’s Eric Deloumeaux was booked when the two clashed during yesterday’s encounter. Collins appeared to head butt the French defender and referee John Underhill had no hesitation in dismissing the Celtic man. Gary McCutcheon was unfortunate not to extend his scoring streak to 4 consecutive matches as a seemingly valid effort was disallowed for offside early in the first half. Both sides had ample scoring opportunities but the respective keepers were both in fine form and the match ended scoreless.

Gallacher Double Sinks Pars

Two goals from a resurgent Kevin Gallacher either side of half time provided the catalyst for Celtic’s 4-0 win over struggling Dunfermline. Charlie Miller opened the scoring after 20 minutes and substitute Eddie Forrest calmly slotted home a penalty within a minute of his introduction. Alan Curbishly’s team prop up the table with just a single point from their 4 games so far, and on this performance it’s not hard to see why. They failed to get a shot on target during the 90 minutes and have keeper Marco Ruitenbeek to thank for keeping the score almost respectable. The only bad news from Celtic’s perspective was an injury to Jackie McNamara that will sideline him for 2 weeks.

McCutcheon Double Downs Croats

A goal in each half from Man of the Match Gary McCutcheon was more than enough to send Celtic home from Croatia with a comfortable 4-0 aggregate win over Osijek. Unfortunately for Dundee they could only repeat the 1-0 defeat of two weeks ago and crash out 2-0 on aggregate to Rijeka, a result that manager Jim Duffy described as “bitterly disappointingâ€.

Ten-Man Dundee Hold On

It was somewhat ironic that having both been involved in UEFA Cup action just a few days ago Dundee and Celtic should meet so soon afterwards in the league. Dundee did the visitors a big favour by having a man sent off after less that quarter of an hour gone. Georgy Nemsadze was red-carded following an unseemly scuffle between him and Don Hutchison. The Celtic man escaped with a caution following the incident. The home side then spent the remainder of the game defending as though their lives depended on it, and knowing Jim Duffy’s volatile nature, that may be near to the truth. Captain Barry Smith led by example and recent signing Mark Brown was solid between the posts. But nonetheless Celtic had more than enough chances to take all three points but just seemed to lack that cutting edge.
