Just completed my first pre-season at the helm of Chelsea...

Fairly successful and has given me a fair idea of what I should look to in the season proper.

def. Chelsea Res. 3-0

I kept my starting 11 as I originally had but moved my preferred reserves to the Reserves squad so they couldstart in the match.

It was fairly even until nearer the end when their defence looked to fall off a bit.

We then traveled to Italy to take on Legia where we left comfortable 5-1 victors.

Ahmed Khalil scored a double and Moussa Sissoko got a double.

I returned to regular squad, traveling with only the 7 substitutes.

We returned to England to face Charlton a few days later, and they put up more of a fight.

We came out on top 3-0 but the 2nd half was quieter.

Oleg Gusev opened the scoring and was folloewd by Asamoah and Sissoko.

Asamoah picked up a solid knock and will be out for 8-10 weeks.

I've sent a few players out on loan and have sold only 1 player.

Jan Mucha, Number 4 keeper, has been transferred to Man City for $5M.

Giorgos Zotos has joined Malaga for the season. The first team experience will help in his development.

Andy Miles and Cameron Brooks have joined Charlton where they too should gain quality experience

Our tactics look to be good for now, but we will soon see when we open our campaign against West Ham

in about 3 weeks.

I'll give out more detail regarding my finalised squad as the start date approaches but for now,

I must attend real employment...

Man City are offering me 31 mil for Ashley Cole and he said he wants to leave and requested transfer, I was playing him on the left and Philipp Lahm on the right with Andreas Beck and Cesar Azpilicueta as back ups, not really sure what to do. I'm thinking of selling Cole and either buying a replacement left back but not sure who with? Or I could play Lahm on the left and either put Azpilicueta/Beck on the right and buy a backup for the left.

Not sure on my budget as of yet but I'll have at least 31 million when I sell Cole to spend and depends on how much the board give me once the transfer window opens (just finished the season)

What do you guys reckon I should do?

I would never have read that post but I just fancied a glance through the Chelsea thread. What season are you in? Its just that is a great offer for Ashley Cole and with the players you already have it makes it even better. If it was me, I would sell him for that amount because it would go a long, long way to bringing someone like Villa, Messi ect into the club. Thats just my opinion and what I would do, but dont take what a Liverpool fan says to seriously haha

Fifth Season done:

Clean sweep of the domestics and the Champions League. Disappointing loss to Chiavas in the World Club Championship but other than that.

Start of 6th Season:

Ansaldi sold to Real Madrid for £10,000,000

Ivanovic to Inter Milan for £5,000,000

Fazio bought from Sevilla: £35,000,000 (£15,000,000 over 48 months)

Azpilicueta from Osasuna: £20,000,000

Pre-Season going to experiment with a 4,5,1 to use as alternative to 4,1,2,1,2. Lampard and Joe Cole in their last seasons of playing I think.

Still manager of England. Took the job in time for World Cup Qualification Play Offs vs Denmark. Won those easily. Took maximum points from World Cup 2014 Group and then lost 1-0 to Portugal in Last 16. Surprised the FA hasn't sacked me.

Squad 2014/2015

GKP: Cech, Delac, Niemeyer (Regen on loan at Derby

DR: Rafinha, Azpilicueta, Johnson (Regen)

DL: Bale, Zhirkov, Peralta (Regen joining Jan 1st)

DC: Terry, Sahko, Kjaer, Fazio

DM: De-Rossi, Mikel, Neustadter (Regen)

MC: Essien, Rodwell, Hamsik, Alastuey (Regen), Lampard

MR/ML: Armendariz, Van Dijk (Both Regens)

AMC: Gourcuff, Cole, Kakuta

SC: Aguero, Dzeko, Hulk, Sturridge

Lampard will only have contract renewed if it gives me a staff option as well. Cole will be released at the end of the season. Armendariz will be offloaded soon as well.

Would like to get Neil Johnson and Rickard Van Dijk out on loan this season. Man City are constantly trying to get Johnson. Terry is getting on a bit and will probably not play as much this season.

Minimum Fee. Besides only paid £20,000,000 up front and the remaining £15,000,000 over 48 months.

Board expectations for 2014/2015: Qualification for Champions League through League finish.

Budget: £72,000,000

Also bear in mind I have maintained the wage bill each season at around £1.75 Million and was able to adjust the budget in January 2014 to give me an extra £40,000,000.

If I have lots of money I am happy to pay big to get the player. John Terry is getting old and very very slow. Fazio gives me three top class centre-backs for when Terry can't cut it anymore. Year or two in other words. I only buy 2 or 3 players a season now. Did the massive rebuilding over the first three years. Average age has gone up but that includes Lampard at 36, Terry at 33, nearly 34, Joe Cole at 32 nearly 33, Essien at 31 and De Rossi, Cech, Zhirkov at 30.

Link to post

It is a lot of money. At the start though I had Terry in his prime, Carvalho in his prime and Alex.

I try not to buy just for the sake of it, not saying anyone else on here does, but I buy as and when I think I need to. Kept an eye on Fazio throughout but didn't think I would use him much so no point buying him just to leave him on the bench for four years. Sahko was my replacement for Alex and Kjaer for Carvalho. Both have much higher CA and PA and are younger. Maybe could have shopped around a bit for a really young replacement for Terry and may still do so. For the next 3 years though my backline is sorted. The midfield is very strong and I can't think of a better, realistic, strike force than Aguero, Dzeko, Hulk and Sturridge. The oldest there is Dzeko at 28.

After reading a lot of this thread and doing a lot of experimenting of my own, I finally decided to start my own Chelsea save. As a fan, I obviously wanted to keep the core players but also bring down the average age of the side. These were my transfers:

OUT:

Deco - Inter Milan - £6.25M

Nicolas Anelka - Barcelona - £14M

Alex - Fiorentina - £11.25M

Florent Malouda - A.C. Milan - £11.75M

Salomon Kalou - Real Madrid - £6M

Juliano Belletti - Espanyol - £1.5M

Paulo Ferreira - Girondins Bordeaux - £3M

Hilario - Man City - £375k loan fee, future fee of £2.5M

Ross Turnbull - Arsenal - £375k loan fee, future fee of £2.5M

TOTAL - £55M

IN:

Sergio Aguero - At. Madrid - £52M

Mesut Ozil - Werder Bremen - £22.5M

Andreas Beck - Hoffenheim - £11.5M

Christian Zapata - Udinese - £14M

Guilermo Ochoa - America (MEX) - £2.1M

Leroy Fer - Feyernoord - £8M

Nicolas Otamendi - Velez - £2.6M

Diego Buonanotte - River - £3.2M

Romelu Lukaku - Anderlecht - £10M

Brad Moore - Los Angeles - £2M (Amazing regen keeper)

Danny Wilson - Rangers - £2.6M

Mats Rits - Germinal Beerschot - £725k

Marc Muniesa - Barcelona - £140k

Alphonse Areola - Paris St Germain - £75k

TOTAL - £131M

I also brought in my own backroom staff, but I won't go into that now. I also used SFrasers training routines and used the coaches in their specialist areas.

I chose the expectation of winning the league in the first season, although didn't really expect much success. After trying things out in pre-season, I came up with a narrow 4-3-2-1 formation which seemed to work:

GK - Cech (Ochoa, Moore): Goalkeeper - Defend

DL - A. Cole (Zhirkov): Full Back - Support (Sometimes Attack)

DR - Beck/Bosingwa: Full Back - Support (Sometimes Attack)

DC - Terry (Ivanovic): Central Defender - Stopper

DC - Carvalho/Zapata: Central Defender - Cover

MC - Lampard: Box to Box Midfielder - Support

MC - Essien (Mikel): Ball Winning Midfielder - Defend

MC - Ballack (Fer): Box to Box Midfielder - Support

AMC - J. Cole/Ozil (Buonanotte): Advanced Playermaker - Attack

AMC - Aguero: Inside Forward - Support (Sometimes Attack)

FC - Drogba (Lukaku): Complete Forward - Attack

A few tweaks to the standard settings, in particular lowering the amount of long shots seemed to give us lengthy spells of possession before finding the perfect option. I also set Drogba as a Target Man, To Feet and my Playmaker varied between Lampard and Ozil. By this time I had hired Italo Galbiati as my Assistant, mainly because of his high Motivating and Tactical Knowledge stats. I also asked Bryan Robson and, newly acquired, Steve Rowley to both scout the next opposition. This gave me a lot of insight into how I should play in the next game. I then altered the Starting Strategy and some of the Playing Styles accordingly. I also slightly altered the Corner and Free Kick routines aswell as obviously setting the relevant kick takers.

I didn't expect too much in the first season, but I was soon top of the league. Confidence built early on and, to my surprise, we were top of the league from the off. Michael Ballack was in tremendous form early season and led us to 7 consecutive PL wins, the Community Shield and good starts in the cups. We went on to win the League Cup, beating Man Utd 2-0 in the final. In the FA Cup, wins over Utd in the Semi final and Liverpool in the final were very sweet. The league title was wrapped up with 7 games to spare and we finished the season with an amazing 103 points, 23 clear of second placed Utd. I'd had a tough run in the Champions Cup, winning my group ahead of Juventus despite only gaining 1 point from the matches against them. In the last 16 I drew A.C. Milan. After a 0-0 draw at the San Siro I twice led at the Bridge, but two penalties pegged me back. I was going out on away goals until up stepped Frank Lampard to slot home a penalty of our own late on. In the quarters, we played Juventus again. I was happy with a 0-0 draw at home in the first leg, meaning a goal away would be priceless. Mesut Ozil scored in the second half and we kept them at bay, 1-0. A tough semi final draw took me to Madrid. I was all over them in the first leg but somehow, only managed to win 1-0. At the Bernabeu, Joe Cole scored a sensational opener early on but was immediately cancelled out by Raul. This time it was out turn to hold on under immense pressure to seal a place in the final! It was back the the Bernabeu and World Champs Barcelona awaited... We were played off the park for the first 60 minutes and eventually their pressure paid dividends, Lionel Messi scoring a penalty on 61 minutes. I had to change my strategy and decided to go for it. Goals from Didier Drogba (77 mins) and Sergio Aguero (85 mins) sent the crowds into raptures and a famous quadruple had been completed!

SEASON STATS:

Games Won - 55

Games Drawn - 7

Games Lost - 2

Goals For - 124

Goals Against - 24

I'm not sure where I go next after that first season, I guess we have to try and repeat it. My board confidence level is 'untouchable'! This is made even more amazing because of the injury ravaged season that we had. Almost all of my starting lineup missed atleast 3 months each with a bad injury, was beginning to think I was cursed!

I thought that I'd post this on here, especially the tactics, because reading other peoples results helped me a great deal.

As a fan you sold Malouda and Anelka? :(:p

Great season though. Who were your top scorers and best performers?

Afraid so, I wasn't that keen to do so but decided to ship them out in favour of Ozil and Aguero. Anelka wouldn't have fitted into my system very well either. I decided that the core of the team should be Cech, Terry, Lamps, Essien, Mikel, Drogba, Carvalho, J Cole & A Cole. Anybody else could be sold at an acceptable price so that I could bring the average age of the squad down a bit.

Total Goals: (apps)

Drogba - 28 (49)

Aguero - 17 (46)

J. Cole - 17 (64)

Ballack - 15 (45)

Lampard - 13 (56)

There were 17 different goalscorers.

Total Assists: (apps)

Drogba - 18 (49)

Ozil - 15 (47)

J. Cole - 14 (64)

Essien - 11 (48)

Aguero - 9 (46)

19 players contributed assists during the season.

Av. Rating: (apps)

Drogba - 7.60 (49)

Essien - 7.27 (48)

Aguero - 7.24 (46)

A. Cole - 7.23 (62)

Ballack - 7.22 (45)

A total of 22 players made appearances

I had the top 5 players in the pass completion rate at the end of the season:

Essien - 89%

Mikel - 89%

Terry - 87%

Fer - 87%

Lampard - 85%

I was also right up there in the goals from set piece statistics. I was a narrow 2nd to Utd in the fair play league.

In short, I played a very possession orientated game. Once I got the ball, I kept it in midfield until a through ball or long shot was on. The full backs provided width and I effectively had 7 in the midfield when in possession, enabling a couple of them to join Drogba when the chance arose. Aguero also came very deep at times to run at the defence and caused all sorts of problems. I was able to play on the break aswell, with Sergio Aguero and Joe Cole my main threats. My main strength was defence and teams found it extremely difficult to break me down. Almost every goal conceded was either from a set piece or a ball over the top.

I'm just about to start the second season now and Roman's been very stingy with his rubles. :( I was hoping for him to inject a nice amount into the club, but it doesn't seem forthcoming.

Link to post

It doesn't help that Malouda is hugely underrated in the game either. Drogba was brilliant! Also I really like the spread of goalscorers you've got, always so much better than having one player score them all.

How much did Roman give you then? Wouldn't have thought you'd need to invest in the squad tbh, maybe just a few youths or something.

Thanks for the info, keep us updated

Thanks for the replies again guys. I don't intend on changing much, although I could perhaps do with an extra midfielder as Ballack and Lamps will obviously not be able to carry on for ever. I will try to keep those sorts of players around the squad though, especially Lamps. The only other possible shortcoming is an another creative attacking player, very much doubt I can buy Messi for £500k though! ;)

Roman gave me about £7M, all of which is gone on a couple of regens. One is an English Leftback and the other a French Rightback. The French guy is going to be amazing and is already pretty much as good as Bosingwa. I also have Andreas Beck in that position, who will be my first choice, so Jose will be on his way. I want to offload Daniel Sturridge, I didn't use him once last season in competitive games and he is never worth £60k p/w! Hilario has gone to Man City after they took up the future fee clause in his loan but Ross Turnbull returned from Arsenal, he needs to go. I will also clearout the reserves, anyone who isn't going to cut itI'm also contemplating whether to sell Ivanovic, he doesn't seem that great on the game for me and only made a few appearances last season. I signed Nelson Rivas from Inter on a free and for very cheap wages and also have Otamendi and Wilson looking to break through.

My main problem however is at left back, Cashley is unhappy and wants a new challenge. Obviously Zhirkov is a great left winger, but is he good enough to take Cole's place as left back? If not, then I may cash in on him, as unfortunately, he doesn't really fit into my system. I feel that one or the other is going to have to go anyway.

Link to post

From your defense I'd sell:

Bosingwa - sounds like his job has been replaced by that regen.

Zhirkov - keep Cole, whatever it takes, and use Wilson and Beck as backup.

Carvalho & Rivas - Carvalho is the oldest centre back, whilst Rivas isn't good enough imo. Ivanovic is the better of the three and him, Wilson and Otamendi could be used as backup for Zapata and Terry.

Link to post

I would keep Zhirkov actually. He is younger and I have had no problems with him at LB or LWB. Cole is expensive and can be used to generate a huge profit.

Have a look at Gareth Bale. In my save he spent 2009/2010 on loan at Everton as he was unwanted by Tottenham. I bought him and have never regretted it.

This does assume that you use your fullbacks in an attacking manner. If not then stick with Cashley.

After taking a break from FM10 I've started a new save with Chels and have just finished my second season. I'm on holiday right now, so I'll post up my team's info when I get back tomorrow. However, I do know I want to replace Bosingwa. I brought in Opare as I remember him becoming a really great wing back in a former long-term save of mine. I'm not sure if his PA has changed because he doesn't look near as impressive and my scouts don't rate him highly. I have plenty of my transfer budget left and can afford ( I would like to think ) any players suggested. Thanks ahead of time

Finally going to start a decent save with Chelsea, as I haven't got into one this year. Only loaded the five main leagues (Eng, Fra, Ger, Ita, Spa) which are all loaded down to the lowest levels with England to level 11.

Toyed with the idea of downloading an update or moving Joe Cole and Ballack but I am just going to play the season like the season just gone hasn't happened :D So it will be my choice if Cole or Ballack etc leave.

Link to post

Cheers el sid, I'll give them a look when I get back home.

tcoleman1: Joe Cole and Ballack can definitely do a job for the first season. Ballack has always done pretty damn good in the CM position for me. I always look to find a player that can do J. Cole's job for the majority of the season (with Milner being my most recent purchase) and start him during less important matches and a sub due to his high flair and low stamina.

On a side note, I'm surprised at the amount of people on this page that have sold core players during their first season such as A. Cole, Drogs, Riccy etc. I'm hoping to have most of them retire with me. Especially Riccy and A. Cole due to their ability to tutor the youngsters.

Cheers for the advice. A bit of an update... I've decided to try to keep both Cole and Zhirkov for this season atleast. Ivanovic has gone, he just didn't perform for me when given the chance and Carvalho seems to have slightly better stats in the relevant areas, the downside is that he is now 32. Rivas is in the reserves. From my sales, I managed to raise the funds to make one very important signing, especially considering MB is still out for a few months. Yoann Gourcuff came in for £17.5M from Girondins Bordeaux, with my total transfer spending at £26M and sales totalling £49M. I've once again been struck with a crazy amount of injuries - Terry, Zapata, Ballack, Essien, Ozil, Otamendi, A Cole and Zhirkov are all missing for atleast the first month of the season. Ochoa and A Cole are both unhappy an want to leave. We've won two out of three league games so far, but slipped up 1-1 away at Blackburn. The Community Shield and European Super Cup are already safely in the trophy cabinet, making it 7 trophies out of 7 since taking over! :D

Update on my Chelsea save.

Finished 2nd season. Won the CL and PL again, reached untouchable status at the club.

Paying out only 1.55M in wages and still have 40M transfer budget left over.

Youth facilities upgraded, new stadium approved, will be finished in 2012.

Playing a 4-3-3

GK: Cech, Smithies, Delac

DR: Azpilicuetta, Lee Blackman, Hutchinson

DL: Criscito, Zhirkov, Garrido

DC: Terry, Mancienne

DC: Ivanovic, Rodwell

DMC: De Rossi, Mikel, Matic

MC: Essien, Lampard, Cork

MC: Gourcuff, Hazard, Di Maria

LF: Aguero, Neymar

RF: Sanchez, Craig MacDonald

CF: Dzeko, Lukaku

My CB pairing of Terry and Ivanovic was amazing last year, as they combined for 16 goals !!!

Just sold Otamendi, as he was one of the worst perfomers on my team last year, so looking to buy a replacement for him as a backup to Terry and Ivanovic. Who should I buy?

Also anything else I need to fix up? Anyone I should sell or buy?

Have you checked the expiring contracts? You might get a decent player on a free, apart from that I can only really think on Zapata, although I think he might be slightly above the price your willing to pay.

Looks like I'm gonna have to lash out a considerable amount on CB now.

Ivanovic got injured in the community shield game, out for 8 months now.

Terry and Rodwell will be my first choices now.

What are your recommendations on:

Jorgensen

Subotic

Kjaer

Badstuber

Papastathopoulos

Should be able to get each for 10-15 M.

Or should I just play Mancienne and Bruma as backups?

Let Ochoa leave tbh. Delac

Will do when Delac returns from his loan spell in January. I also have another young keeper from the USA who, according to Italo Galbiati, has the potential to be as good as Petr Cech. I got rid of many reserve and youth players in the Summer to raise funds to buy Gourcuff and a few quality youngsters. I kept the majority of English talent though and also anybody capable of being a squad player. Kakuta and Bertrand have both made a few appearances this season and my new young French rightback has been sensational and is now already first choice for his country. The English leftback is also making waves in the youth and England U19 teams, as is an amazing striker who came through our youth system. I think I'll let Zhirkov go in January too as I have Bertrand and the regen to cover for Ashley Cole now.

Im gonna start a new save with Chelsea on tha original 10.3 update and ****. Im gonna play with the same squad as they did last season. What formation is the best? And what playerroles should i assign? Im leaning towards a 433 formation. And wich talents in the youthteam are worth taking a look at?

I played a version of that formation as it suits the players already at the club. With a couple of creative players, you can have a really solid team with a bit of bite going forward. Be aware of Essien, Mikel, Kalou and Drogba going to the ACN for a month or so in January. My key signings would be Aguero and Gourcuff. I would also look into a few youngsters, the youth team is ok but now fantastic. Kakuta and Bertrand are the two that I have found capable of being squad players so far. Delac is also a very useful keeper but is on loan for the first 18 months. I used the following roles for my players in the first season:

GK - Cech (Ochoa, Moore): Goalkeeper - Defend

DL - A. Cole (Zhirkov): Full Back - Support (Sometimes Attack)

DR - Beck/Bosingwa: Full Back - Support (Sometimes Attack)

DCl - Terry (Ivanovic): Central Defender - Stopper

DCr - Carvalho/Zapata: Central Defender - Cover

MCl - Lampard: Box to Box Midfielder - Support

MC - Essien (Mikel): Ball Winning Midfielder - Defend

MCr - Ballack (Fer): Box to Box Midfielder - Support

AMCl - J. Cole/Ozil (Buonanotte): Advanced Playermaker - Attack

AMCr - Aguero: Inside Forward - Support (Sometimes Attack)

FC - Drogba (Lukaku): Complete Forward - Attack

I also stopped a lot of the players from taking long shots as I found that they were just throwing possession away.

Play with one striker so he has more space to move forward into, also make the striker hold the ball up and play plenty of through balls. Set the AMR up as an Inside Forward - Attack. Always works for me, my wingers usually outscore my strikers. If the AMR is right footed make them learn "shoots with power", if they are left footed teach them "places shots".

Cheers.

I'm yet to receive my transfer budget, but finances are much healthier than last year. Franck Ribery will be my first signing, he is joining on a free from FC Bayern on 1st July.

Ribery  Drogba still performing brilliantly, just looking at those stats it'll be tough replacing him.

Unlucky in the Champions League though.

Cheers Joe. Drog and Aguero were both incredible, especially towards the end of the season. I have Romelu Lukaku developing well but he's been very hit and miss when I've played him. He got a hatrick in one game and a late winner against United (9 wins out of 9 so far against them by the way! :D) but was dreadful in a few other games. I have another English regen who looks amazing, he came through our own youth system. Any ideas what I should do if these two fail to live up to expectations?

I think Lukaku will come good if you keep giving him chances and time, I'd keep my faith in him tbh. Other similar players are Yaya Sanogo, Khouma Babacar and Ishak Belfodil, who all have very good potential if you want an alternative. Or there's older players like Dzeko, Cardozo or Necid maybe. Other than those, you'd probably have to change the type of striker you use.

I liked Joes alternatives all very good similar strikers and Lukaku will come up with the goods just let him play some games here and there and he wll then be able to take over Drogbas Job. In my previous save i was luck enough to get him on a free in 2014...Unfortunatley my team had way too many good players but he was amazing!

Can anyone reccomend a good player for the right other than Sanchez? As i have signed him already and i am looking to ship Kalou in January if he doesnt perform.

Thinking of taking a break from my Birmingham game once I hit January, and going to start a game with Chelsea. Mainly due to the fact they have a great squad, but it is aging so I can bring through some youth. I'm stuck for which formation I'd play with; I'm likely to go with the 4-3-3/4-5-1 formation, but if I were to sign Aguero, would I be wasting him out wide or would he be able to cut inside a lot?

Basic team (In my head so far):

GK: Cech

RB: Boswinga

LB: A.Cole

CB: Carvalho

CB: Terry

DM: Essien

CM: Ballack

CM: Lampard

AMR: Anelka

AML: Malouda

ST: Drogba

Signings I'd set out to make would be: Keeper (Youth; may rely on what I've got and wait for a regen), CB (Youth; Danny Wilson), DM (Backup with potential; Will wait a season, possibly, but target Sissoko), CM (Unsettle Fellaini), AMR/L (Aguero my main target, anyone know how much he usually costs?) and a ST (With potential, mostlikely Lukaku)
