GillsMan
Hi all, While everyone is busy getting excited with the new competitions editor - one thing I love about the new editor is the ability to be able save certain edits in a config file - I've been wishing for this for years! It means I can finally update a small part of the database and release it for others to (hopefully) enjoy. Years ago, I made an update which was relatively popular, and one of things I was most proud of was the updates I did to the injuries to bring them in line with what I felt was a more realistic model. I appreciate, however, that there is always going to be some debate about how realistic the injuries currently are. So, I'm working on an overhaul of the injuries model - perhaps "overhaul" is too strong a word. So, I've worked on tweaking the existing injuries, getting rid of some of the nonsensical ones, and adding loads more injuries. I've also tried to make the time out and chance of occurrence slightly more realistic. I also added more medical terms, but don't worry, the description of the injury is still in plain English - usually! So, for example, if you look at the injury league table, you may see terms such as "meniscus tear" and "ilio tibial band friction syndrome" and "proximal humeral fracture", but if you click on the player, you'll see that they have "a knee cartilage tear", "runner's knee" and "a broken upper arm". There are now more injuries that have a higher chance of occurring, but only keep players out for 1-3 days, such as an inflammation of the knee. More serious injuries occur slightly less where I felt they occurred slightly too much in the game. Some injuries have been reclassified, for example hernias are now groin injuries, rather than upper body injuries. So, I'll provide some screenshots shortly, but for the mean time this is what I'm working on, so if anyone's interested, or has any suggestions, let me know. I'll be looking to upload it somewhere shortly. Nice one, Gills Click here to download
strong centreback
Lovely will definately be downloading this, prefer to have a more in depth analysis of the injury on screen seeing as it is the club doctors telling you about said injury and not a newspaper. GillsMan
Cool - I'm just testing this now, as I wasn't happy with the regularity of a few injuries - e.g. ACL (cruciate ligament injuries) were happening a tad too regularly for my liking. Indi75
Superb idea, really looking forward to this. (albeit I might have to tone down the exaggerated injury proneness at Liverpool first!)
solstar
Any chance of broken fingers? Its not a joke but many players get broken fingers or toes and you dont see it all that often, much more hernias than finger or toe injuries.
Baroslfc5
I downloaded a db for FM 2009 in which the author,,(forget the persons name, sorry) had put swine flu in as a illness. In light of recent events at Blackburn, seems very real to life. Could that happen in this Mod?
Mons
Fantastic idea Entering 'swine flu' as an injury is not too unrealistic imo. Is it possible, perhaps, to enable the playing on with certain injuries. I think it's daft that a player in the game can miss a fixture due to a strained wrist (snigger) or a broken finger (ahem) whereas irl you'd be expected to play on, if you're not a goalkeeper naturally. I've played with a broken finger myself and fully expect professional teams to be able to handle minor medical issues better than at the ****** level I play in. Or stubbed toe, whoever's ever missed a game due to a stubbed toe! And so on and so forth, I wondered if you've thought of addressing stuff like this? matt_neil41
Sounds brilliant, would love to see more injuries in the game as currently, it only seems like there are a small fraction of how a player could get injured in real life! Looking forward to this mate and if you need anyone to test it as well?

homerjnick
Hey Gillsman great idea, hope you throw in a few one-off injuries like "slips on a banana skin at home" type thing...
Goobertron
How about adding some rarer but more serious injuries? I never, EVER, seem to see players sustaining an injury that keeps them out for more 8 months or whatever. Look at Eduardo and Hargreaves for examples of 12+ month injuries. I dont suppose there's some sort of guide explaining how to edit/create injuries (i've already done a search) so i could do it myself?

GillsMan
Hi all, Apologies for the delay in this. It's now ready for uploading, so I'll post the link in a few minutes (just need to work out where I'm going to upload it). I just want to answer some questions first: Any chance of broken fingers? Its not a joke but many players get broken fingers or toes and you dont see it all that often, much more hernias than finger or toe injuries. Yes, broken fingers are in there. What I've done with the hand injuries is created duplicates of each of the hand injuries: one for goalies and one for outfield goalies. That way, goalies can be fully affected, and players can play on with, e.g. a fractured wrist.I downloaded a db for FM 2009 in which the author,,(forget the persons name, sorry) had put swine flu in as a illness. In light of recent events at Blackburn, seems very real to life. Could that happen in this Mod? Good idea this. I've added swine flu to the list of internal diseases. I thought long and hard about internal diseases, and I've not really changed these too much, but I have added testicular cancer. It's got the lowest chance of occurrence (0.01), but I felt it was important to put it in there. If anyone wants to find out more about this disease, I suggest you check out the Neil Harris Everyman Appeal. Yes, as explained above, hand and wrist injuries for outfield players have a much lower inactive ratio. Incidentally, a stubbed toe is a interphalangeal joint sprain and can be slightly more serious in pro sports, keeping players out for a week. It doesn't really refer to when you 'stub' your toe on a bit of furniture! Hey Gillsman great idea, hope you throw in a few one-off injuries like "slips on a banana skin at home" type thing... You can edit the type of injuries, but not really the cause of injuries. I've added the sort of injuries that can be caused by this, but unless I edit the injury name to "strained ankle ligaments caused by slipping on a banana skin" or something like that, I can't really refer to it. If there's enough demand for it, I could include it the cause in the injury description however. How about adding some rarer but more serious injuries? I never, EVER, seem to see players sustaining an injury that keeps them out for more 8 months or whatever. Look at Eduardo and Hargreaves for examples of 12+ month injuries. There are now some more serious types of leg break and knee injuries, e.g. a compound double leg fracture which will keep players out for between 10 and 14 months usually. solstar
Good news, I await the file eagerly. Well done.
GillsMan
Release: OK, the file is now available from FileFront: Click here to download. The file is a .rar file so you'll need to unzip it using WinRar, WinAce, 7-zip or something like that. The file contains a readme which it's recommended you read. Changes: * The number of injuries has increased: from 79 in the original game up to 127 in this release of my injuries model. * Medical names are added to the injuries which are visible when viewing the injury table (viewable by going to a particular league, clicking on Stats and choosing the Injury Table tab). For example, Facet's Syndrome is the medical name for back pain, patellofemoral pain syndrome is the medical name for anterior knee pain. * Sprains and strains tend to have three stages/degrees to them: first degree (sometimes called stage one) strains are minor injuries, where a muscle or tendon has been pulled; second degree (sometimes called stage two) injuries are slighly more serious injuries where injections can't be used to get the player through a game. Third degree (sometimes called stage three) injuries refer to torn or ruptured muscles or ligaments. The injuries model reflects this. For example, you have a first degree hamstring strain (pulled hamstring), second degree hamstring strain and a third degree hamstring strain (torn hamstring). * There are more injuries that put the player out for a shorter amount of time. So you may find you have a few more injuries during a match day, but you'll find that a lot of these injuries do not force the player off, and don't keep the player out for too long. So there are more dead legs, swollen knees, bruised calves, etc - representing the knocks that players accrue in a game, but don't necessarily keep the player out of the next game. * There are now many more varieties of broken legs, knee injuries, wrist breakages, ankle problems and so on. * Internal injuries have been largely untouched but swine flu has been added and, after much serious consideration, so has testicular cancer. In the game, this has the lowest possible chance of occurance (0.01) and can strike any player. Please see the Neil Harris Everyman Appeal for more information on this disease which can effect all of us (assuming we're all male). * Many more changes and tweaks to each of the injuries. GillsMan
Great work, a question though. If testicular cancer ever occurs on a player, what happens? BigBeast
This looks brilliant, thanks! Without meaning to sound rude, are there any plans for an updated version of this in the future or is it a one-off. Just for the fact that I'm not going to have much time playing FM over the next couple of weeks so I'm not sure whether to download it now or wait in case there is a new update later. Just for the fact that I'm not going to have much time playing FM over the next couple of weeks so I'm not sure whether to download it now or wait in case there is a new update later. It's not rude at all. It totally depends on feedback and my own testing. I'm sure there'll be more injuries to add, in which case I'll definitely do an update, but it depends on feedback. And what about arthritis? Hi, there are a few arthritic-style ailments included, such as osteoarthritis of the knee and achilles tendinopathy. FuryG
Good Work - but the XML causes repeatedly "array ccess out of bounds". Lloydey
This looks great. One question: has it been tested over a number of seasons, to ensure that the number of injuries overall doesn't increase / decrease massively? Just don't want my game becoming unplayable (which happened with one of the release versions of FM in the last few years!). Thanks

Just don't want my game becoming unplayable (which happened with one of the release versions of FM in the last few years!). Thanks Good question. I tested up to 10 seasons in the game (I was very surprised how quick it was to do that!). The number of injuries seems about right. There are fluxuations in injuries, and there were a couple of times when the injuries seemed a bit low, or when there were a few too many injuries, but overall it balanced itself out. What I was particularly interested in was keeping the number of particular injuries realistic. For example, at first cruciate ligament injuries were a bit too frequent and ankle ligament injuries didn't happen enough, but I feel they're about right now. rancer890
This looks fantastic Gills. Just one question, have you included concussions (grade 1,2,3) and post-concussion syndrome? If so, how long are the players out approximately?

blurps11
Not sure if this is a bug in the vanilla game, your file or if I simply lack the medical expertise: The specialist can make ruptured ligaments go away in a day ? Abaddon879
Shame it isn't save-game compatible. Looks like an awesome addition to the game. Lazarous
Great addition here - many thanks! I laughed at the Banana skin comment, I remember that Leroy Lita from Reading was out for a few games when he "got out of bed and hurt his back"... http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/r/reading/6935892.stm ...can we have these kind of injurys! White Flag
Excellent addition to the game, thank you. Slightly off at a tangent, but along similar lines to injuries : have you considered doing a similar edit for bans, if this isn't hard coded ? I remember a few FM's ago we had players attacking referees and being banned for 8 months. We also players becoming dissilusioned and retiring. Both happen in real life so it would be interesting to see this added.
Australian Stig
GillsMan I just have to say this addition is amazing - it's subtle yet adds another dimension to the game - well done! I can just imagine the next update will have everything from a chipped nail to lacerations sustained from crashing his new Ferrari (only joking!). But you could almost incorporate an entire medical text book into this if you had time...having said that this is Football Manager not Team Doctor... Latimerinho
I think there's something a little odd about some of the injuries you've added, otherwise it's a fantastic idea and concept. Some people have already mentioned about players being out for one day with what we class as a serious injury. What might cause this? It would seem there's something missing, or that the expected return dates with a specialist are not working properly.
