Tner not happy with things

An angry Tner was found on the local pub complaining about being left out of the starting elleven on the national for several games in a row. At Ajax then player isn't too happy about things either as his contract is nearing an end and Ajax is hesitating giving him a new one. Later that night Tner was found in a garbagecan severly bruised due to him picking a fight with 3 STI hooligans.

Jamaica Stunned by STI’s Hart (Jnr) Attack

1st Half: The STI line up was rotated once again for the final group clash. Stigarakis and Cardiovascular had been unable to recover from knocks picked up against the U.S.A. in time so Whalley and Hasek came back into the first eleven. Castagnoli was also rested after two solid performances so far with van Pieters coming in at right back. Burrows and Kroeger Jnr. also returned to the starting line-up and Healy was selected for his first start of the tournament. The match started very cautiously as both sides knew a draw would be enough but a loss might put their hopes of reaching the quarter finals at risk. Most of the efforts were long range pot shots. As the half wore on, the game started to get a bit rough and the physios became the most active participants. First of all, Gus Crazy needed extensive treatment before coming back into the game; after that a couple of Jamaican players needed treatment after hard tackles; and finally Kroeger Jnr. was stretchered off after what appeared to be a stamp. Luckily, he had noting more severe than a bruised thigh. That meant Philippens came on and the half finished goalless

2nd Half: The second half continued in much the same mould as both sides had chances and plenty of crunching tackles too. Gingerbread Jnr entered the fray in place of Burrows as STI looked for a breakthrough but it was on the right side where Paul Hart Jr having the greatest effect. A couple of runs had caused the Jamaican defence problems and it was to be one of those that led to the goal that would decide the game. After some good work by Crazy in holding off his opponent’s challenge, the ball came to Hart Jnr who ran forward only to be fouled wide on the right wing. The free kick was in the perfect position for a deep cross into the box and the STI attack and Jamaican defence positioned themselves accordingly. Hart Jnr, seeing that the STI bench were preparing to bring Bobinho Jr on in his place, had other ideas though and decided to go for goal. He hit a stunning strike that went over the one man wall and dipped and curled over the keeper for a spectacular goal. Jamaica had no answer for that and didn’t even manage a shot on goal afterwards. That meant STI were definitely through but Jamaica would have to sweat it out and wait for the results of the other games to come in.

Video Highlights: The Goal


The U.S.A. made it three wins out of three as they beat Cuba. Cuba put up a good fight though and kept the scoreline to a respectable 2-1. That meant U.S.A topped the group with STI second. Jamaica’s one win over Cuba would prove to be just enough to get them through.
Group A Final Table

Mexico also topped their group with maximum points, finishing in style with a 5-1 win over Guatemala. El Salvador needed a win to advance and it looked good as they took the lead against Canada but two late goals saw the Canadians secure 2nd and El Salvador and Guatemala miss out as they managed just a point.
Group B Final Table

Group C was where the surprises came. Going into the final round, Honduras and Costa Rica were top with 4 points and they were expected to comfortably beat thier opponents, Panama and Netherlands Antilles respectively, who both had a single point. Honduras duly obliged as they beat Panama 2-0, knocking their opponents out in the process. Few expected what happened in the other game though as Netherlands Antilles stunned Costa Rica 1-0 to draw level with them on points and goal difference and overtake them on head-to-head results. Costa Rica still qualified as one of the best third placed teams but they had suffered a major shock in the process.

NTI Finally Find Their Spark With T & T

Another friendly, another trip away from home for the Northerners. Almond was brought back into the starting line-up and took the captain’s armband again as Lazewski was replaced by Twigge Jr. Barron and Collingwood were also given chances to show what they were made of as NTI sought to end a run of 4 consecutive defeats. It didn’t start well as the hosts took the lead with their first meaningful attack on 12 minutes, Kenwyne Jones scoring the goal. NTI did not panic though and stuck to their counter-attacking game. Although they were not seeing as much of the ball as their opponents, they were creating better chances and they levelled the game on 23 minutes. Alavro Brown collected the ball as a Trinidad attacking move broke down ad spotted Collingwood making an immediate run. The centre back hit a beautifuly weighted long ball stright into his team mate’s path and the Celtic youngster took one touch before firing a low drive past the keeper. The scoreline remained the same until just after the hour mark. Just as it seemed the game would peter out into a draw, Benat Fernandez Iglesias took matters into his own hands as he collected the ball out wide and went on a mazy run, eventually rounding the keeper and tapping into the net to score what would prove to be the winner. Trinidad and Tobago tried to put the pressure on after that but NTI had done such a good job of snuffing their attacks all game that they weren’t about to let it slip now and held on for the win.

STI Face Tough Task

Following the completion of the group stage and the selection of the 8 qualifiers for the next round, the quarter-final line up was confirmed today. The Southern Treasure Islands, having qualified an impressive 2nd in Group A with a very young side, face a really tough test as they have been paired with tournament favourites Mexico. The Mexicans will not take their opponents lightly but will be confident of reaching the semi final stage. In the other ties, host nation U.S.A. take on Canada while Group C winners Honduras take on Jamaica. Netherlands Antilles, who surprised many with their win over Costa Rica to take 2nd place in Group C, get the chance to do it all over again as they face Costa Rica once more.

STI had to make the trip from Hawaii to California for their quarter final and the journey seemed to have taken its toll as they were stunned by Mexico early in the game and unable to recover. With the first attack of the game, Vuoso hit a fierce shot staright at Blackbeard but the keeper could only block it and the reboud fell to Pacheo who fired a volley in to open the scoring. 5 minutes later, STI fell even further behind. This time, Marquez played a through ball to Pacheo and, with the STI defence out of position, he had time to control the pass, move forward and slot the ball past the keeper. Following that goal, Mexico created three more good chances and it was only poor finishing and good goalkeeping from Blackbeard that prevented the scoreline getting worse. STI didn’t muster a chance until the half hour mark Paul Hart Jnr was played through after neat play from Philippens and Kroeger Jnr. but his shot went wide. Mexico eased off in the second half with thoughts already on conserving energy for the semi final. STI, try as they might, could not find a way past the experienced Mexican back line and that brought an end to their first foray into international competition.

In the other games, Honduras earned a comfortable 1-0 win over Jamaica and Freddy Adu scored a hat-trick as the U.S.A. smashed 4 past Canada. In the last quarter final match, the Netherlands Antilles did it again as they beat Costa Rica for the second time in this tournament. The game had gone into extra time after finishing 1-1 and seemed to be heading for penalites but a goal with 2 minutes to go gave the minnows a famous win and a spot in the semi finals!

2011 Gold Cup Round Up

After STI’s exit from the competition, the rest of the tournament played out like this:

Semi Finals
It was the clash of the titans (on a continental level at least ) in the first semi as U.S.A. took on Mexico. The game was to be settled by a single goal coming from Jozy Altidore in the first half. Despite many second half chances, the Mexicans couldn’t get back into the game and were knocked out.
U.S.A. 1, Mexico 0

Surprise package Netherlands Antilles were looking to book an unlikely appearance in the final but faltered at the last hurdle. The game itself was tight but a defensive slip with 12 minutes to go gave Honduras a penalty, which proved to be the only goal of the game.

Third Place Play-off
Mexico had something of a point to prove after their semi final exit and they made the Netherlands Antilles pay. 2 first half goals put the Mexicans firmly in control. They had several chances to add to that total but had to wait until the last 5 minutes to score a 3rd, Torrado completing his hat trick. A 4th and final goal was added by Carlos Vela in injury time as Mexico finished what for them would be a disappointing 3rd.

Final
With home adavantage, U.S.A. were considered heavy favourties to beat Honduras and claim the Gold Cup for a fourth time. Honduras, however, were no pushovers and had quietly worked their way to the final away from the media glare. They stunned the Americans by taking the lead on 24 minutes and then adding a second goal 7 minutes later. The U.S.A. piled on the pressure in the second half and eventually pulled one back with 7 minutes to go through Eddie Gaven. It proved to be too little, too late though as Honduras held on to claim their first ever Gold Cup!

Awards
Despite their appearance in the semi finals, the STI players were largely ignored when it came to the tournament awards. No STIers were featured in the Dream Team and the Best Player award matched the Golden Boot top three. There was some recognition for Paul Hart Jnr however, whose long range free kick against Jamaica featured in the goal of the tournament list.

A reminder for everyone:
If you are unable to post for any reason (holidays, exams, personal stuff etc), please let me know either by posting in here or by PM and I'll keep your player safe. The rule from now on works like this: if you don't post once during a season of the game/a week (whichever is longer), you don't get a player profile and summary at the end of the season. You are available for selection now but STI don't have any fixtures scheduled until February 2012. That should give you plenty of time to force your way into the reckoning though. One minor problem which I need to look at though is that I overwrote a player in the Spurs youth team using FMRTE who had DR Congo as his nationality. I changed that to STI but for some reason he is listed as having dual nationality and 'undecided' about which nation to play for. I will make sure he picks STI though.

A loan move would be nice although I did chose to start at a top club, so hopefully the chance to use their world class training facilities will compensate for the lack of first team football.

Solid performance from the national team in the recent Gold Cup despite only 1 start for me and the odd appearance off the bench. Good to see Arsenal continuing their dominance domestically and hopefully once van Pieters breaks into the first team he'll win a few trophies at the same time.

• Juan Alvaro Brown has become disillusioned with Porto’s transfer policy as he feels the club’s new signings will reduce his playing time. The utility man can play in the centre of defence, midfield or up front but he is unhappy at the arrival of two defenders, a midfielder and two strikers.
• Loic Philippens is unhappy that Ösnabrück rejected offers over the summer from Stade Rennais and Kaiserslautern when Lazewski was allowed to leave.
• Benat Fernandez Iglesias is in danger of becoming a manic depressive as he is still unhappy and desperate to leave Chivas USA as he has been for the last three years!
• Hawkini has told the media he is flattered by the interest being shown in him by top flight Mexican sides but he is staying put at Zacatapec for now. That may not be the case for long though as the defender will be out of contract in June 2012.
• Tom Hamilton fractured his wrist in pre-season training and is not expected back in action until October.

• Heinrich Kroeger has sitched clubs again, leaving his post at AZ to become goalkeeping coach at Wigan. Captain Gingerbread is still happy conducting aerobic workouts at Kasierslautern.
• Brendanio and Bobinho were both released from their positions at New York and now have just their STI jobs to keep them busy. Jason de Mire, despite the odd bit of punditry for T.I.T.S., is fully focused on his national job and the ass man... who was he again?
• The big success story of the legendary players from the first sign up so far has been The Stig. Shortly after joining Houston as youth coach, he was promoted to manager and has since won the US Cup and Superliga as well as taking his side to the NACL final.
