Thanks SI, I've finally got the game working after around a week. I hope thar windowed mode is just temporary and the main window will be sorted soon. I'm lucky though as i get a white screen with the pop saying "Football Manager is not responding" so i say to wait for a response and it seems to work... don't know why...

It might be the case that your drivers need updating, failing that it may be a problem with the Cache files but I'll know more once I see your dxdiag.

to get this:

Click Start
Click run or click in the vista search box.
Type "dxdiag" and press return.
Once the program has finished scanning select "save all information" and save to a place you'll remember.
Open the .txt file and copy/paste the information into a post here.

If you have a shortcut on your desktop you can do the following:
Right-click on the FM shortcut.
Choose "Properties" from the pop-up menu.
In the "Target" field, add the --reset_preferences command line option after "fm.exe", so it should look like this:
"C:\Program Files\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2009\fm.exe" --reset_preferences
Press OK and then try to run the game as normal, using the shortcut.

You'll want to remove the command after you run the game, as otherwise it will continue to reset your preferences every time you launch.

If you don't have a shortcut you can make one and then perform the instructions on the shortcut you've made.
If you purchased and installed the game through Steam you should be able to find the fm.exe in the following directory:
C:/Program Files/Steam/SteamApps/Common/Football Manager 2009/
If you purchased and installed the game from a boxed DVD copy you should be able to find the fm.exe in the following directory:
C:/Program Files/Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2009/

To stop the game freezing when going to a match - In the game go to Preferences > Display & Sound and in the 'Display Mode' section in the top left hand corner of the screen click the drop down box and select 'Windowed' then confirm your changes. Hope this helps

just want to say thanks to gudge for finally sorting my problems out, I think it was down to changing the display mode to windowed as when i tried starting a match it still said xml.parsing error but instead of crashing the game stayed in the background and i just clicked on the ok and it hasn't done it since 'touch wood' its a shame about the problems as its a really good addictive game

I have downloaded the game 3 days ago now and still had no joy at getting it to work, I downloaded via steam as recommended and after initailly being told that my game had already been activated I managed to use the laucher application to get the game to register but now when ever I launch it through steam or directly through the fm.exe nothing happens, no errors just a process apprears in my task manager!! I have completely rmoved steam and reinstalled both that and fm and still no joy!

I opened a ticket with steam on friday and am yet to have any useful assistance from them, is this ever going to be resolved or are si/steam goig to start offering refunds for this god awful depolyment fiasco!

Since my xml parsing error just isnt going away can you help me do a complete uninstall?

I've uninstalled and removed any extra SI files in Application Data, Program Files, and My Documents(both admin and user) but the problem still comes up after reinstallation.

I'm obviously missing some files to manually delete. Can you help me out please?

Is there any other reason why the xml parsing error would continue to show even after a full uninstallation? Also would I be able to use my old save game if I get the game to work again?

You can use your saved game, just make sure you move it somewhere safe before doing a complete uninstall.

How to delete your Cache files

First of all you need to turn on hidden files and folders. Go to My Computer and at the top select 'Tools' the 'Folder Options'. The go to the 'View' tab and select 'Show hidden files and folders'

Windows XP:
1. Open “My Computer”
2. Navigate to : “Documents and Settings\<Username>\Application Data\
3. Go into the “Sports Interactive” Folder.
4. Delete the “Football Manager 09” Folder.

Wndows Vista:
1. Click “Start”
2. Click your username on the start Menu
3. Click on “AppData” and then “Roaming”
4. Go into the “Sports Interactive” Folder
5. Delete the “Football Manager 09” Folder.

How to Delete your Registry Files

1. Click “Start”
2. Click "Run"

And your documents folder (Has the location of your saved games).

After going thorugh and clearing anything FM related re-install the game, apply the patch and give it another go.

On this post it seemed your game was working you just didn't have facegen.

It could be the case your graphics card drivers need updating if you'd like to post your dxdiag I can tell you if that is the case or not and try to find a link for you to download your drivers from.

The other issue as I've said is something I'm looking into at the moment.

Okay, what you suggest above would take up 2 seats of the code.

Does that mean you've installed on 3 other machines? You can always uninstall on of those machines to get a seat back. However I've also raised this issue with the support staff that deals with this to find out how you can unregister one of the unused seats.

Edit: If you can't do this for some reason then I can forward your code onto the Softanchor people so they can look at what might be causing a problem. You can send this to me here via PM.

You've got a very old graphics card. And the driver is 5 years out of date.

After looking around the latest drivers I can find for your card are here:

These are ATI's own drivers so they are fine to download and install.

After doing that can you try again please and see if you have any luck.

Sure you can.

You can run the game by going direct to this location:

C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamAPPS\Common\Football Manager 2009

And using the .exe to run the game.

You can also put steam in 'offline' mode through their tools menu and you should be able to run the game as you do while it is online.

Here are the advised phone activation steps:

1. Insert disk and run the setup (if you have autorun installed it will do so automatically).

2. Once installed, the game will bring you to the "Soft Anchor" registration screen.

3. You will be prompted to enter the keycode on the back of your manual. This can be difficult to read if there are many "0" and "O" in the code. Before entering if possible visit the http://keylookup.fm2009.softanchorinsight.com/ site. Here you can enter the code as you see it and the website will display the full code in a format that enables you to determine 0's from O's.

4. On the soft anchor screen, there is text space split into 4 sections. Type the 25 digit code in full with no space in here. Please note that it is VITAL that you ENTER THE CODE IN CAPITALS.

5. Underneath the text space, there will be the option of "online" or "phone". Choose "phone" and select next.

6. Here you will be given a number for your particular country after an "are you sure you want to activate by phone message".

7. On the same screen you will be given a 16 digit numerical code. Once you ring the number, this is the code you must enter when prompted.

8. Enter the 16 digit code, once confirmed you will be given a 7 digit response code consisting of numbers and letters.

9. Enter the response code when prompted, and you will be given a new 16 digit code. This process will repeat about 4 times (ie. 16 numerical code, response code, 16 numerical code, response code, 16 numerical code, response code, 16 numerical code, response code).

10. If, after three 16 digit codes and three response codes the process stops, it means that you probably entered your intial 25 digit key code in incorrectly. Again - re-enter the 25 digit code IN CAPITALS.

11. Once the final response code is entered correctly, a small box will appear with "Auth Key" at the bottom left of the Soft Anchor page.

12. You will then be prompted with three seven digit codes to complete the authentication. Once the first auth code is entered correctly a second box appears beside it, and then once the second auth code is populated a third box appears. Put in the final code and the authentication is complete. A message will appear to confirm this.

13. Start the game as normal by double clicking the icon on your desktop or in your C/Program files.

So the game was working fine and then stopped working.

Did anything change to make the game stop working? Did you change any settings on your machine?

It's still worth updating your graphics card drivers and trying to run the game again.

OK heres the thing Steve I dont think I was connected to the internet when I activated it on my laptop, which is why Im a bit confused about it all!

I ran the game then the activation code screen popped up automatically put that in and I was done and dusted......

Okay so you're trying to run the game through steam.

That's an error with the steam software not the FM software. Have you tried to uninstall it or done anything else to the software?

Can you try this please:

1. Right-click the FM icon on your desktop & click on "properties"
2. In the "target" field in the dialogue box that opens, add "-windowed -small_screen" at the end of the target, making sure there's a space in between.
So it should read like this: "C:\Program Files\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2009\fm.exe" -windowed -small_screen
3. Save your changes & you'll be able to play FM in window mode next time you run FM

Now i got the problem to update the driver,it say "setup was unable to complete installation.Try to set up your display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running the setup".
I don't understand what that means lol.

So, the driver is now not installing on your system?

That is the correct driver for the Radeon 7500. I'm not sure why it wouldn't be installing.

It might be an idea to contact AMD Customer support over it.

Which FM.exe?

You haven't copied the .exe to the desktop have you? You should copy it back into the game folder and make a shortcut instead of copying the entire .exe if you have.

Okay so you're trying to run the game through steam.

That's an error with the steam software not the FM software. Have you tried to uninstall it or done anything else to the software?

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Couple of times when it was installing it failed. Apart from that i haven't done anything else except for attempting to play on it.

hi there, i also have the XMl parsing error and have tried every piece of advice under the sun, through steam, not through steam, the target field thing on the shortcut dont work as all it says is football manager 2009 as oppose to all that other stuff its meant to say. It all happened cos i got blue screen whilst playing the game. I have all the correct specs. I have spent twice as long trying to sort this out and installing re-installing as opposed to what i have playing the game. I absouloutly love the game, but i just keep getting the feeling that this cant be saved and is a serious waste of £30 please someone help please please please.

Also i have tried the show hidden files folders etc but havnt got the cache file, and also had the latest patch.

Hi there. I had a load of problems trying to install the game when it came out.
I was told it was because of my graphics card or something. He told me to check back here in a week to see if you'd come up with a solution, and what i'd have to do.
I've typed "dxdiag" into Run like the guy told me a week ago, and in the device bit it says:

2 Questions.

Firstly your computer has 2 drives. Are they both DVD drives or CD drives?

Secondly where did you purchase your disk from?

Hi Steve, 1 drive is a CD only drive and the other is a new DVD / RE / CD drive, not had any previous problems with ant games. I bought the game from Sainburys in Derby.

I'm jelious of all these people with running problems...I be happy just to run the disc.

OK Steve, i've just tried to run the game again and played a friendly against Swansea and part way through a huge image of a Swansea shirt appeared and then the game stopped responding. I eventually got out of it using task manager, i'd guess that this is part of the same problem. Anyway this is a large chunk of the dxdiag file:

After a succesful install when i try and run the game i get:

" Football Manager has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution becomes available".

I am running on Windows Vista.

Any ideas anyone??

this might sound stupid but where do i install the patch to, i don't have the net on the computer my game is on

will the patch make my game faster because it takes me nearly 2 hours to go 1 week and about 20-30 mins to play 1 game, unacceptable

Hi Steve - so i'm on my second copy of the game - after changing one disc as it wasn't working... and my laptop still simply will not read the disc. I've tried it on another computer and it works (although the first one didn't) but it just makes noises and nothing shows up on the dvd drive in my computer. It's a pretty decent laptop and works with all other dvds... Have I just wasted £30 or is there anything i can try? It's not scratched - although the first one wierdly was...

I've also tried using a lense cleaner but made no difference. Bought it at GAME

Hey steve, my game crashes all the time, and I've updated my drivers. Offcourse I have the patched version. I've also played in windowed mode, and it's freezing also. I always have to reset my computer. It's only happening when I play a match. Here's my dxdiag. Can you check please why it doesn't work? I can play fluently games like fallout 3, dead space, fifa 09, .... but it only crashes with fm 09. I cannot play a game like that. Thanks.

Please read the information below, the suggestions have been confirmed as fixing the issues you are experiencing.


I own a MAC – what’s the problem?

Mac users have nothing to worry about there is no activation on the game for MAC users, just the normal disc check. Mac Book Air users will need an external Optical drive in order to play – we are currently looking into options for this.

ALL USERS PLEASE DO THIS FIRST

Please check the ‘Football_Manager_2009_InstallLog.log’ located in ‘C:\Program Files\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2009’ and report any errors. If you do have errors can you please also report where you purchased the game from.

When I try to activate, it says I'm not connected to the internet / other activation problems

We have created a small activator script that should help anybody having trouble activating the game online.

Step 1 – Download the activator from http://www.footballmanager.com/fixv2.zip

Step 2 – Unzip the contents of the activator to your desktop.

Step 3 – Double click the activate.vbs file. Note the screen shot below.



Step 4 – Next you will see a dialog box prompting you for your license key.



Step 5 – Enter your license key into the dialog. Remember – to check your key at http://keycheck.fm2009.softanchorinsight.com

Step 6 – Press OK - then wait 30-60 seconds and you will receive a second message. If you are successful – the message will read:



If you get this message, open the game and run it.

If the activation fails, the message will read something like:



The number in this message will help us understand the problem. For example, In this case the number -1003 indicates that your license key. If the error is -1003 enter your license key into the form at: http://keycheck.fm2009.softanchorinsight.com

If it is something besides -1003, please send Muzchap or JMordetsky a PM and they will do their best to help!


I’m receiving the Error [-10] what can I do?

Fix: The error 10 is related to not being able see the server correctly; this could be due to a firewall blockage or ‘proxy’ issue. You are receiving a [-703] error: ‘We were unable to process your unlock request. To receive a new key please visit sigames.com’

Fix: This indicates that the server is busy and has been unable to fulfill your request, please do keep trying, it will authenticate.

Phone activation fails - Drops out after 3rd key issue

Fix: This happens because the original key entered was incorrect and the phone line cannot validate the request. Please recheck the original 26 character key entered, you should validate your key (if possible) via the following URL: http://keylookup.fm2009.softanchorinsight.com/

ERROR: Cannot run game:Failed to set up graphics system

You should also check that you are running the latest graphics driver, you can do this by visiting the computer manufacturer website, or by visiting the graphics card manufacturing website.

Fix: You need to delete the certificates and re-activate the game

1) On receiving the error, please uninstall the game
2) Please navigate to the following directory:

Note: If the above does not fix it – please check the following:

• C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data is not set to read only.

• Also check that C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sports Interactive and C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2009 Certificate are not set to read only!

To check if a file or folder is read only, please right click the folder and select ‘Properties’ from the dropdown, you should the see a box at the bottom called Attributes – please ensure this is unticked or does not have a green square inside.

• Another way it could happen is if there is another instance of FM.exe or Activator.exe holding onto our certificate. In this case - the user should check the process list to see if another instance of FM.exe is open. If so - close it first.

To do this you need to open Task Manager (right click TaskBar, or CTRL+ALT+DEL), sort the Image Name column by clicking on it and identifying if Activator.exe or FM.exe are running. If they are highlight and click ‘End Task’


You launch the game via Steam and nothing happens

When launching the game you receive the following Error: “FM.exe application error. The application has failed to initialize correctly (0xC0150002). Click on OK to stop the application.”

You receive the ‘Error: Application was unable to connect to the internet. Please check your connection.’

Fix:
1) Open IE and go to: https://fm2009.sa01.softanchorinsight.com

2) Here if you are using IE7 it will prompt you – “There is a problem with this website’s security certificate.”

3) Next, Click – “Continue to this website (not recommended)”. However – this is okay, it is safe.

4) Look up top at your IE address bar – you will see “Certificate Error”. Click this box, then click “View Certificates”.

5) Press, “Install Certificate…”

6) Select the “Place all certificates in the following store”.

7) Press “Browse”

8) Select “Trusted Root Certificate Authorities”. Not this will install the Go Daddy (a reputable) certificate into your trusted root certificate authorities if it is not there.

9) Press OK

10) Press Next

11) Press Finish

Close IE, then Reopen it and to go to https://fm2009.sa01.softanchorinsight.com. Note: on this visit, you will be allowed without trouble.


From here –

1) Reopen your FM2009 game
2) Enter your key into the Activation Dialog
3) Select the “Online” activation
4) Press Next

You game should activate immediately.

I installed through Steam and cannot start the game or create a shortcut, or running without Steam being active

I installed through Steam and I can't find my Data Editor Or Resource Archiver.

I installed through Steam and now I get an annoying block of colour on my screen (bottom right hand corner)

I can't play the game due to an XML parsing error

If you have a shortcut on your desktop you can do the following:

• Right-click on the FM shortcut.
• Choose "Properties" from the pop-up menu.
• In the "Target" field, add the --reset_preferences command line option after "fm.exe", so it should look like this:
  "C:\Program Files\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2009\fm.exe" --reset_preferences
• Press OK and then try to run the game as normal, using the shortcut.

You'll want to remove the command after you run the game, as otherwise it will continue to reset your preferences every time you launch.

If you don't have a shortcut you can make one and then perform the instructions on the shortcut you've made.

• If you purchased and installed the game through Steam you should be able to find the fm.exe in the following directory:

Temporary fixes for users having their game freezing

One solution to this is playing the game in Windowed Mode. Instructions on how to setup the game in windowed mode can be found in another thread:

I've just trolled through 27 pages with this question asked several times, and it has been completely ignored by everyone at SI....

I have downloaded the activator and the launcher because I received the could not connect to the internet error, i put my serial in that and it says completed please launch the game etc, I try launch the game and im faced with the activation box again saying my trial period has expired.

Now is anyone at SI going to respond to this? we the customers paid alot of money for a game we should have no problems installing or playing, but having a problem and been completely ignored is a complete disgrace to be quite frank.

quite simply... how do we fix this error? if you don't know... just say, ignoring customers is not how you get repeat custom.

That is simply what Windows does when it cannot receive a response from an application. My guess is that this comes up for you when the game is processing (fixtures or dates) and simply means that FM is busy spending all of it's time running the game instead of responding to Windows. I get it every now and again, and have done for all versions of FM/CM - as I always play in windowed mode.

Given that this really isn't effecting your game, i don't really see how this is a bug and should warrant such posts?

As far as I am aware there are three "solutions" to this "bug".

1 - there's a preference for "processing speed" or something similar with settings such as "fastest (less responsive)" "fast" etc etc.. try turning this down if you want your game/pc to be more 'responsive'.... but do remember that this will adversely affect the time taken to process events/fixtures
2 - select fewer active leagues
3 - purchase a better computer

As far as I am aware you need to properly uninstall FM and deactivate if before reformatting or else you will lose one of your activations.

As far as i can tell from the forums, for those with the disk copy of FM, this currently works; but those (like myself) who installed via steam are still waiting for a deactivation URL to go live before we can deactivate our games.

I keep getting a Windows Security Warning that it has found a problem with the file.

It will not let me install b/c it says the file does not have a "digital signature."

To stop the game freezing when going to a match - In the game go to Preferences > Display & Sound and in the 'Display Mode' section in the top left hand corner of the screen click the drop down box and select 'Windowed' then confirm your changes. Hope this helps

I downloaded the patch and that DirectX thingy and still my game continue to freeze when going into a match till I saw your posting. I went to the Display & Sound and select 'Windowed' and now my game is up and running. Thanks! I hope my game will be fine from now on.

... and one more thing, can you tell your bosses in SI for the next FM2010, please have it working right out of the box and have a more easier activation code process. The activation exercise was really a painful affair.

I've updated my display/VGA driver to the latest one, and my DX10 is updated until october version
I can play many games such as CoD4; CoD5; PES 2009; FIFA 2009; etc with high graph quality

You can use your saved game, just make sure you move it somewhere safe before doing a complete uninstall.

Once again this is the advice about the XML Parsing Error from the front page:



Again give that a shot before completely uninstalling.

Hi Steve. Progress has been made! The xml parsing errors are gone and I can start a new game.

However when I try to load my old game, a "This game could not be loaded" message comes up and FM shuts down. When I click it again it says "FM09 is already running" and I have to restart to get it to work.

Any suggestions as to how I can play my old game as I'm already 3 eventful seasons in?

I have purchased FM09 via Steam. All working ok until I submit the team prior to the match engine starting. Then it just freezes with the 'football cursor' showing. Have left it for some time but it does not progress. My PC spec is 1.66GHz; 2GB RAM; Core 2Duo; so should not be a machine issue...any ideas pls?

Sorry if this has been dealt with before but I've read through so many pages of forums and I really should at work

Anyway, I bought the game just normally on disk and didn't download it or anything and every time I've tried to play it it just randomy crashes. Sometimes it's when I'm trying to do my first match, sometimes it's just randomly, I've still never even managed to play a game yet. I don't get any error messages or warning or pop ups or anything it just sit there. My laptop is only a year old but I know nothing at all about computers so I'm worried I won't be able to do anything about it. I've had every other game and never had a problem.

I was told it was because of my graphics card or something. He told me to check back here in a week to see if you'd come up with a solution, and what i'd have to do.
I've typed "dxdiag" into Run like the guy told me a week ago, and in the device bit it says:
