How long have you left it for? Give it a couple of minutes and if nothing is showing then reboot your machine and try again.

ok, so i copied that over and then it asked for the saAudit.dll file so i dually copied that over. and now it just says 'cannot run game. failed to set up graphics system'

im sure i've seen someone else have that problem somewhere in the previous 6 pages - am i getting somewhere?

The last file you can try before re-installing however would be this:

Yes, you can copy and paste it (don't cut and paste it as otherwise the demo will no longer work if you remove it), so that's worth a go.

the fix for this looks like it says i ned to download that directx thing, which is what i've already done. is is this something differet. i feel im getting somewhere. in a weird way, a new error message is quite encouraging!

Have you updated your graphic card drivers?

This may be the source of the problem. It's unusual that it's sort of starting but not starting up properly...

You could also try and use the --reset_preferences command from the FM shortcut. I did post some instructions on how to do this for another user about a page or two back, but if you're not sure, give me a shout and I'll post them again.

I would try looking up the key again. I haven't seen anyone else with this problem. The thing is though mate, once you have the key, good luck in activating it! I still haven't on my laptop after 24 hours of trying. This is bad bad news. Its just a game at the end of the day that we all want to play and they have put this stupid authenticating rubbish in the way to stop us. £30 wasted.

I still have not had my problem helped.

I have to activate through the phone because of no internet connection on my computer in my room (I am currently on laptop). I have 'succesfully' activated the game 4 times over the phone but everytime I try to load the game the softanchor screen comes up again wanting me to activate the game.

I have already tried deleting the certificates then trying again and I have also tried un-installing then doing it again but no luck. Can someone please offer a solution as I am really desperate to play the game.

I have no internet connection so i try to authenticate via phone
All steps are followed in phone and it finally says in the phone that my copy is done thats all ok
So do says in my screen to that the process is over and my game is authenticated
But when i do try to lauch the game it appears the same screen again asking me to authenticate again
I have done like 5 times authenticating but every successful time the same happens
IT STILL asking me to authenticate...
I have bought the game since two days and i cant play...

ok, im trying to download the patch (altho i thought this came automatically with steam?)

if that doesnt work, then i will try that 432mb bad boy in the morning.

and then if that doesn't work, i will try the reinstall, altho i am not sure how that would help really cos am i not just going to encounter the same problems again?

i wish i had someone like yourself sitting at my computer as im sure you'd fix it pretty quickly!

i installed the game last night after several attempts and it was working fine so i tried loading a new skin and while i was doing this the game crashed, when i restarted my pc i started the game again and it went past the first few credits showing the writing in the right hand bottom corner which changes and then the screen went black and nothing else happend! so i reinstalled and the same happend again and again i have even reinstalled and uploaded the patch before restating the game and it just gets stuck there and crashes. can you help at all???

Cant update drivers everywhere i look i cant find any that will work with my card

i downloaded the game through steam. i have been trying to launch it. it doesnt work if i paste the code, but if i put in in lower case it goes through to the prossesing page then says its activated. i then click the fm desktop and it does the same process again. i payed more for this through steam as it was supost to be a quick and easy way to get it. this is not the case as ive been trying since yeaserday. i aslo canot find fm in the program files do i need to downlad again. i also cannot get any help through steam. so help needed please!! many thanks

You may be able to find a workaround by clearing your preferences, but if it worked initially it should definitely work again. It sounds like it just didn't load the skin correctly and somehow got caught in an in-between state.

I posted some instructions on how to use the --reset_preferences command line option about a page or two back for someone else. That should hopefully solve your issue.

I've been having some pretty poor performance from the match engine.

-I have a graphics card that was below the minimum requirements. I installed the DirectX SDK and thus had no problems starting FM09. Otherwise, my system is a Pentium M 1.7Ghz with 512MB RAM
- I disabled the 3d match engine from preferences (and sound).
- performance in the non-match screens is generally okay. It is a bit slower than last version but not prohibitively so.
- there are no graphics issues or other signs that my computer can't handle FM09.
- Setting up the match engine takes about 20 seconds and i can move between different screens after setup with reasonable speed.
- Despite 3d being disabled, the 2d engine runs at an extremely stuttery speed (regardless of what match speed i select). Performance in classic view is slightly better than TV view, but either way, watching matches has no fluidity.
- this is despite FM08's match engine running flawlessly (no stuttering, no pauses etc.)

So is this just because of the ramp up in requirements for the match engine from FM08 to FM09 or are there other settings that i could tweak to return performance to somewhere closer to FM08 levels? Also, is there any chance of future performance enhancements in subsequent patches?

yea i reinstalled it for the 7th time started it up all the beginning bit gets to the white writing in right hand corner of screen that whirls round for about 15 secs and then just a black screen and games crashes

im not using steam to install it im using the over option also its not asking for my key code when i reinstall it

This is an issue we're aware of and we're continuing to work on for the next patch. We didn't have enough testing time to include it in the 9.1.0 patch, but we're hopeful we can improve it further for cases like yours.

We don't have a specific date or time for when the next patch will be released, but I would say it's reasonable to expect it in this calendar year. We want to make sure we nail as many of these niggling problems as soon as possible so you can get on with enjoying the game, so if there's something there that needs to be looked at and fixed, then we'll be straight on it.

Error: You are receiving the Error [-51] / [-52] message

Fix: You need to delete the certificates and re-activate the game

1) On receiving the error, please uninstall the game
2) Please navigate to the following directory:

XP users: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2009 Certificate
Vista users: C:\Program Data\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2009 Certificate

3) Please ensure that it is the \certificate directory you are located in

4) Delete all content

5) Reboot the machine

6) Re-run the installation program and retry activation - ensuring you have 'verified' your key using the following website: http://keylookup.fm2009.softanchorinsight.com/

7) You should now be activated

Note: If the above does not fix it – please check the following:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data is not set to read only.
Also check that C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sports Interactive and C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2009 Certificate are not set to read only!

To check if a file or folder is read only, please right click the folder and select ‘Properties’ from the dropdown, you should the see a box at the bottom called Attributes – please ensure this is unticked or does not have a green square inside.
Another way it could happen is if there is another instance of FM.exe or Activator.exe holding onto our certificate. In this case - the user should check the process list to see if another instance of FM.exe is open. If so - close it first.

To do this you need to open Task Manager (right click TaskBar, or CTRL+ALT+DEL), sort the Image Name column by clicking on it and identifying if Activator.exe or FM.exe are running. If they are highlight and click ‘End Task’

I bought my football manager 2009 yesterday and it worked out fine, but when I tried to start it this morning i got the following error message (just before the starting menu was reached):

"XML Parsing error
not well-formed (invalid token) at line 1 of last_saved_game.xml"

I haven't edited or added anything to the game nor have I run any other patches than the 9.1.0 that came with the game. I have reinstalled the game two times without improvement.

Still to be honest this really shouldn't be affecting me playing this game in the slightest having to download some extraordinary large file. Why it wasn't included on the disc i don't know. People with absolutley no internet have been well and truly done over.

My estimated time to download DirectX update is 19hours30mins although at 9 hours only 30% was dowloaded then it crashed. What am i to do? I have a fairly new PC and have updated graphics drivers but still to no avail.


So please please help me with this...even if there is any way i could buy this directx file on disc...

Hi All,

We have created a small activator script that should help anybody having trouble activating the game online.

Step 1 – Download the activator from http://rapidshare.de/files/40919470/fix.zip

Step 2 – Unzip the contents of the activator to your desktop.

Step 3 – Double click the activate.vbs file. Note the screen shot below.



Step 4 – Next you will see a dialog box prompting you for your license key.



Step 5 – Enter your license key into the dialog. Remember – to check your key at http://keycheck.fm2009.softanchorinsight.com

Step 6 – Press OK - then wait 30-60 seconds and you will receive a second message. If you are successful – the message will read:



If you get this message, open the game and run it.

If the activation fails, the message will read something like:



The number in this message will help us understand the problem. For example, In this case the number -1003 indicates that your license key. If the error is -1003 enter your license key into the form at: http://keycheck.fm2009.softanchorinsight.com

If it is something besides -1003, please send Muzchap or JMordetsky a PM and they will do their best to help!

Great work SI so far so good just used the website below as advised and straight copy and paste, just started new game patch everything installed. I have always loved CM/fm and i have had nearly every single game starting back when me uncle brought me cm1 when i was about 7-8 on our amiga.

Note, began game as Man city just wanting to spend big and get a feel for the game, however, i am disappointed that i only get a max of over £80 million to spend and that is only if i say i am going to win the league, on the psp version i have over £200 million to spend, nevertheless here goes thank you all another MARATHON SESSION STARTS.

I get the "Activation completed successfully. Please try to run the game." message. Still, when I try to run the game through steam it says my trial is expired and it tells me to enter my key. And this goes on and on and on....

Now what? :-)

Ok my sob story.
Bought via Steam. Downloaded and patched.
Opened and ran game first time and it crashed when going to first match.
Restarted and crashed at same point again.

Now it won't even start ("Football Manager 2009 has stopped working").
I have updated my graphics drivers (Geforce 9300 256mb), Directx and dotNet. Still no joy.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated. Very vague error I know.
I'm running Vista with 4gb RAM and dual procesors@1.7Ghz.

i GET THE GAME APPLIACTION FAILED, PLEASE USE CORRECT KEY. I HAVE TRIED THIS USING FULL CAPITAL LETTER AND LOWER CASE NOW. I HAVE CUT AND PASTED BOTH FROM THE KEY CHECKER SCREEEN.

ok. i restarted my pc. I have re-installed game, choosing Uniloc method again, now i only activATE by internet option and no phone. this is getting very very frustrating. I have treid the post above and get error 10, invalid key! maybe my key on the box is a dud! maybe even the game is a dud 1, starting to feel like this,

i know some of the chaps on here are being very helpfull, both from sega and SI,and I am thankfull, but come on, how many games have been sold! where is everyone else. Surely someone out there needs to dig in their pocket and sort this mess out now!not soon, or in a short while, I am sure I wont be on my own come 10 am when the shops open if we can't get to play this!

I have been trying to play the game now for 3 straight days and still no joy so I look around these forumd for dome help and maybe a solution. I read with intrest your help page on page 1 as I too have been having problems with Internet connections. So I followed yopur step by step guide on page 1 on this topic but yet when I put my code into the activate box I get the following error :

I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if the lads at SI can help get me sorted out as after 3 very long and stressful days of trying to access and play the game I've virtually pulled out all my hair which isn't a good thing as I'm starting to look like my dad !!!!!!!!!

I have downloaded via Steam so cannot change the target to windowed mode. My option on the shortcut is:
"C:\Program Files\Steam\steam.exe" -applaunch 10540
Windowed mode is greyed out on the preferences menu - i have unticked threading also which someone said may help with no joy.
Also i'm using a new PC so drivers will be up to date

Previously it would freeze on club info screen but thats fine now(?)

If anyone can help or point me in another direction it would be much appreciated as i'm so dissapointed!

I installed it and after a bit of trouble with the "graphics system failing" -thing I managed to start playing the game at about 11 PM. After a couple of hours I carefully saved the game and made sure the save was complete before shutting the computer down at 1 AM. Yesterday I wanted to continue playing again, and what I get is a XML Parsing Error - not well-formed (invalid token) at line 1 of last_saved_game.xml. I spent the entire day yesterday trying to fix this; defragmenting, uninstalling, reinstallling, reactivating, downloading DirectX and the Microsoft parsing thingy and many others, deleting caches, rebooting and a lot lot lot more!

How will I be able to play the game which has so far cost me 49,90€ and 72 hours of my life?

Delete that XML file and it will rebuild it.

I am already confused with all the files I've been checking in the past days. Where should I find the XML? Or do you mean the last saved game which should be in a "games" -folder but haveb't seen one for 09 yet?
