[GUIDE] Removing 3D kits from team information screen

I know a lot of people have had a serious dislike for the 3D kits showing on the team info screen. Well there is an easy way to fix that (that doesn't involve deleting them or anything like that). It'll also display 2D kits for teams with a license within the game.

1. Find your user data folder. By default this is the following location depending on your system:

Win Vista:
C:\Users\<username>\Documents\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2009\

Win 2000/XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2009\

Win 98/ME:
C:\My Documents\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2009\

Mac OS X:
/Users/<username>/Documents/Sports Interactive/Football Manager 2009/

NB:
There is no folder called 'user data'. This is simply a name for the location specified above. Everything should be done in the root of the directory shown.

2. Create a folder called 'panels' in your user data folder.

3. Download this:http://www.sendspace.com/file/ryz6t2

Mirror: http://files.filefront.com/kit+panelxml/;12381356;/fileinfo.html

[NB] If you use the filefront link please remove the underscore from the filename once it's downloaded and replace it with a space. This is something filefront do when you upload a file with a space in the name, nothing I can avoid. So it should be 'kit panel.xml' not 'kit_panel.xml' - Thanks to Maviarab for pointing that out.

4. Place 'kit panel.xml' in the 'panels' folder. Launch Football Manager 2009. When loaded go straight into game preferences from the intro screen. Click on 'Display and Sound' on the tree menu. Make sure that you tick the check box on the page called 'Always Reload Skin on Confirm' and un-tick then box saying 'Use Skin Cache'. Now press confirm on the tree menu. There should be a box that pops up saying 'loading image data for the new skin'. Once this is done 3D kits should be banished from the team info screen. You may want to quit the game and reload it - just to be sure. You can change the ticked and un-ticked boxes back to what they were before.

Ghost Kits

After doing the above you'll probably notice a ghost-like overlay on top of any non-regular style kits you install for teams. There are a couple of solutions for this:

1. Download a set of default kits for the style of kit you are using

For example, if you're using the ss08 style kits you can download the default kits here: http://rapidshare.com/files/67016343/default_SS_08.rar.html

Simply download, extract and place the 'default' folder somewhere in your graphics folder in the user data area. It doesn't need to be in a specific location.

2. Use a blank effect.png

This will get rid of the effect layer completely. If you use more than one style of kit or can't find default kits for your style then use this. Download the .zip file, unzip it and place the 'ghost removal' folder in your 'graphics' folder. Again it doesn't need to be in a specific location.

http://files.filefront.com/ghost+removezip/;12368992;/fileinfo.html

Using either of these methods it is important to CLOSE AND RESTART the game. Just reloading the skin does not seem to enable changes and could account for some of the problems people have been having.

This doesnt work. makes all the text disappear! all i am left with is the menu bar..

'loading image data for the new skin' appears in a box in the top left of the screen, normally in the middle, then after that screen is blank. i can click exit game but cant actually do so as the confirm button has disappeared.

Ok. It works if you put the panels in the userdata folder, but not the data folder.

Are you sure you guys are putting the file in the right place? It needs to be in your user data area not the steam folder area.

It works fine for me:

That's just the ghost kit that needs removing as was the case with FM08.

Simple way to do that is to create a blank transparent .png file 130x130 and call it effect.png. Save it in the same place your 3rd party kits are and add the following line to the config.xml file.

<record from="effect" to="graphics/pictures/kits/default/effect"/>

You can also download a set of ss08 default kits from various places that would get rid of that issue too.

Bert 44: Yes SI didn't include 2D kits for licensed teams.

I've got the ghost removal and my own kits working except for one small problem. It wont work for England.

I tried to put my own kit in for england and the default stayed. Then I tried the removal and it didnt work. I tried using the kits for other teams and it worked every time - but not for england. Ive got the correct unique ID but it just wont work for some reason, any ideas?

Everyone has a user data folder and you can find it depending on your operating system (XP, Vista etc) where it says in the initial post. Perhaps you are thinking there should be a folder called 'user data folder', that's not correct.

So for example with Windows XP by default your 'user data folder' is:

C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2009\
