Introduction

Welcome to the second season of the European Small Club to Big Club From a Big European Nation Challenge. (A bit wordy I know but it does exactly what it says on the tin I suppose ) - this challenge is all about taking one of those bigger nation small clubs to glory.

The Aim

To take a small club who were previously unplayable in the game from the lower divisions of a nation outlined below, leading them to success in their national top division and ultimately to achieve Champions League glory.

The Possible Countries

The available countries for this challenge have been deemed “too big” for previous challenges of this type. The ‘Big European Nations’ chosen are:

Holland
France
Spain
Italy
Portugal
Germany

League Reset Dates
Based on FM08, a list of all the league reset dates (TBC) are shown below. If you have found any changes to this, please let me know.

The Rules -Playing

Load a game with all the available divisions within the nation you selected only (only one nation is allowed).

A large database should be ticked (although you are free to choose a medium or small database option if you wish). Any official SI patch may be used, but no other edited databases can be used for this challenge.

Attribute masking should be enabled, with no additional players from any nation loaded.

The extra levels of detail that you can change while in the game are up to you, as they shouldn't make a difference. It is advised that you select ‘Load all Players’ for the country you are in. (This has been proven to provide you with over 50% more players in some countries!)

Add yourself as an unemployed manager, the details are not important at all, as you will not use this man to manage your club.

Go on holiday until the reset date of your chosen nation, this shouldn't take that long, perhaps about an hour. Saving on the day before this date may give you a better choice of teams by reloading the game then going on holiday for one day, I would strongly recommend trying this.

Retire your unemployed manager. Add a new manager, the options are up to you but 'past experience' must be set to the lowest possible which is 'Sunday league footballer'. I understand that choosing different nationalities may have an effect later on, but I trust people will be sensible with this. I would expect people to use their own true nationalities.

Then choose to take over any club which has been promoted to the bottom playable league of your nation.

You must now manage this club to the national top division title, then progress to be champions of Europe. This doesn’t have to occur in the same season, just with the same club. Should you be sacked at any point during the game, you may either re-start the challenge with a new team and a new save game, or you may wish to continue on your current save game, taking over a club at the end of the season under the same rules as before.

There are no restrictions on parent and feeder clubs, and you must be able to scout a player before you buy them - you don’t have to actually scout them, just that the option is available.

The use of any external utilities and editors (Such as Genie Scout or FMM) are prohibited.

Player naming is allowed. (This is a warning for those of you who do not wish to see this)

Discussion on tactics is allowed. (This is another warning for those of you who do not wish to see this)

Please use screenshots for any aspect of your game you wish to share - this is actively encouraged!

When you join the challenge, could you post a screenshot of your manager's profile as soon as you join your club.

Progress of your club should be documented using this thread, we want to hear the story of your club all the way through. Please keep us updated, even if you are doing really badly.

At the end of every season, could everyone post some kind of season review, including at least a screenshot of a league table and the clubs transfer page. If you give this a title in bold it makes it a bit easier to pick out.

How to Post a Screenshot

• While in FM, press the 'Prt Sc' button (usually next to F12 on your keyboard).

• Open an image editing program such as Paint and paste the image

• Save the file as a JPEG

• Upload the image to an image hosting website such as Photobucket or Imageshack

• Post the direct Url to the image here.

And it's here!! \o/ Just finalising my French game so will be starting tonight. At the moment it's going to be between FC Martigues and Red Star 93 i think.

you can't actually manage in the CFA (i think as i'm not actually quite there yet.) the CFA is almost full of reserve teams but one team is promoted from each of the 4 CFA divisions. I am anticipating that i'll be managing in the 'National' league, the third tier.

Red Star FC - French National - The Beginning.

And so i introduce to you the new manager of Red Star 93. The team looks like this, and this is the squad i have inherited. All of the players were on rolling contracts so that helps me get rid of any deadwood slightly. a lot of the players are pretty good though so contracts have been offered out. i have overhauled the staff somewhat and am pretty happy.

For those interested, a brief history of Red Star 93.....

Red Star Football Club 93 is a Frenchfootball club, founded by Jules Rimet (yes, the founder of the World Cup...) in Saint-Ouen, Seine-Saint-Denis, Paris in 1897. They played in Ligue 1 at periods of 1932-1933, 1934-1938, 1939-1948 (not included 1940-1944 period due to France occupied by Germany), 1965-1966, 1967-1973 and 1974-1975. The best result was 7th in 1946-47 season.
"Red Star" is not a translation; the club's name in French is "Red Star", rather than "Étoile Rouge".

Coupe de France Winners (5) : 1921, 1922, 1923, 1928, 1942

Former players include Cyril Domoraud and Tony Cascarino , and Former managers include Roger Lemerre and Philip Troussier.

No problem, Its interesting to see some of the clubs and it makes me feel part of the challenge before I get the game on Monday

ROFL I just checked out Spain and in the Tercera División one level below the playable Division 2 B, there are 360 clubs in 18 divisions, I will write this up but just a warning it is going to be a rather long list haha. And I thought the german one was bad with 189 teams and Italy with 166 teams. There are a huge number of playable teams in this Challenge so a large variety for you all to choose from, I am tempted by one of the teams in Italy with names of bigger clubs included, so Football teams like Virtus Verona or Fortis Juventus, then again maybe building a rivalry would be cool the likes of ASD Francavilla or FC Francavilla if they both come up.

I think that was the biggest surprise when I was searching through the Serie D, so I had to check and make sure, now reading an Italian page about Serie D was not so easy, but their name was mentioned, I was sorta shocked, can't find out why they are down there though. Can't remember them in Serie C2 last season either...

Well that is why, haha after a little more searching I found this...

Football Club Messina Peloro are an Italian football club based in Messina, Sicily originally founded in 1900. The club has spent most of its history in the lower Italian football leagues. They last competed in Serie B in 2007–08, this following three consecutive seasons in Serie A. On July 2008 Messina were excluded from professional football due to financial issues, being later registered into amateur Serie D, where they are currently playing.

So they had financial trouble and got made into amateurs, gutted.

Well I just had a read of the Holland League system and it appears that they have had a closed League System, but as of 2008/09 they are moving to promotion/relegation between the Eerste Divisie and the Hoofdklasse, although the Dutch FA is looking at adding a Topklasse inbetween these two as a Semi-Professional League instead of having a direct step-up, but I think from what I understand this Promotion/Relegation should be in place in FM09, so I shall make a list of the Hoofdklasse teams and hopefully they are playable after a season on holiday.

Well it looks like they will be, but once I get the game in bout 22 hours by the time I get home from work I will be running a game through a year on each League to make sure of the dates etc. Holland being the big one to check, if it doesn't come after the first season I may run through a second cause it does mention something about promotion in 2009/10 so that would be two years into the game, we will see what happens.

With the current FC Barcelona "B" squad looking very strong to challenge for the Segunda División B Grupo III trophy, Head Coach Faz will be looking to further strengthen the squad.

It is still unknown whether the Head Coach has what it takes to bring FC Barcelona "B" to the dizzy heights of their parent club FC Barcelona which is currently in the La Liga; however a latest interview with the man himself, shows one extremely confident young manager:

Well, I was looking around at the Spanish Division B, also known as the Segunda Division B, leagues and deciding which team to choose for this challenge. (I know I have chosen Barcelona B above; but I read somewhere in Wiki that a reserve team cannot be in the same league as the 1st team, or something like that). Anyway, I did some searching for the teams that were newly promoted from the Tercera Division, to the Segunda Division B and these following teams were the newly promoted after the Play-offs were played:

think it's going to be tougher in France with Red Star than it was with Como... Not that that's a bad thing!! played a coupleof home friendlies against National teams, losing 2-1 and a 0-0 draw. Trying to fine tune my formation. debating a 4-4-1-1 but may revert back to 4-4-2.

Edit: I just found out a major disadvantage..Any player I sign for will stay in the main Barcelona team instead of coming to the B Team! :S

I've signed 2 quality keepers but they are both being 'pulled' to the main team!

But I think I may have found a solution to it; seems that when offering them a contract, I specified a 'Key Player' status for them; thus when they have agreed to sign, they'll automatically go to the first team.

Not sure if this is a bug or it is supposed to happen that way.. Nevertheless, shall try to make the best of what I have then.

Salvatore Leone has been unvailed as the new manager of AS Casale Calcio a club whom he belivies can win the champions league uner his guidance.

Casale are celebrating the centurion this year and the new manager will want to end there 79 year barren spell by winning a trophy

Ok Rant over, no idea when I will be joining depends how quick I can get the idiots to get me a copy sent here...As for the B team, you cannot enter the cups, you can't enter the same league as your Real club, basically you are the manager of a reserve club, completely pointless just so you know before you do it :P Hence why when I created my lists of every possible team you can complete this challenge with I didn't include B teams, the exception being AJAX (Who have an amateur club set-up seperately in FM)

Update: So now I have just thrown away any chance of getting it in stores and paid for it via Steam, knew I should've just done that on the weekend, cursed stores.

A quick update after a month into the new season..

Everything has been going well, minimal injuries and everyone's morale is high. Quite lucky with the minimal injuries as Barcelona "B" only has 18 players available; thus am unable to rest the key players during matches. Then again, it is still early season, so everyone is fresh and strong.

it looks ok to me for now. have a issue with my team sheet duplicating a couple of players so i'm playing with 13 men but the patch seems to have sorted a lot out....

Guttingly there is none in Wellington, so I ended up paying for it over Steam and downloading then after reading for a bit cause it wasn't working getting it to work using a few shortcuts around the place, and now it works beautifully, I really can recommend Steam and follow that up by making a desktop shortcut and then adding the reset preferences and small screen and windowed mode to the target (Check my old posts for more info) and then it worked a charm, no issues since I did that. Of course to use steam you have to use a credit card I have been told Wellington will get its earliest stock in about the end of the week, I would suggest just calling stores continuously til you get one with stock then get there straight away lol.

Well holland is seemingly not going to have promotion in FM09, I have fast forwarded to June, but I then realised the rules all along had never mentioned relegation, I am trying to fast forward into the new season to see what the rules say after the reset

Welcome everyone to a new year, and for Des Tiny a new season with a new club in a new league. On June 23rd 2009 he was appointed as the newest manager of Associação Desportiva de Fafe, (henceforth known as Fafe), on the day he joined the club he found the club lacking in staff, with only two Physios on the books, but he found a full Squad of players ready to put their all into the club and ready to fight for future Champions League Glory.

Fafe: A Club History

The club was founded in 1958 and is a fully professional team, with a stadium called Estadio Municpal dos Desportos which has a capacity of 8,000. The last time the club won a title was in 1996 when they took out the Portugese Third Division. The most famous ever player to play at the club was Rui Costa when he was on loan from Benfica at the age of 17. Another notable former player is Flávio Meireles who is current captain of Vitória Guimarães, he spent three years with the club playing 48 games and scoring two goals as well. AD Fafe spent a year in the top flight in the Portuguese First Division were they finished 16th in the 1988/89 season were they were relegated.

(According to Wiki they are in the Second Division A already in 2008/09 season, yet in FM09 they start in the lower 3rd Division...a little confused at this)

So my challenge is to take them back to the glory of 1988/89 and return them to the top division and do better than 0-0 against FC Porto that they achieved that season.

No way I could turn down the team when they came up, that name was just awesome, a bit gutted to read on other sites that Fafe in RL is actually already in the Second Division, and that most of the teams that come up were competing there in 07/08, but I will deal with that.

As for players, well I went out of my way and signed 18 new players, including the most necessary position of Goalkeeper, with two 16 year olds that would be trouble. I must say I am very happy with the new line-up and also with an opening friendly result of 3-0 over fellow promotion team AC Viseu. Now the question is whether my team can actually compete, I am predicted to come 6th out of 12, but I would like to go for promotion as soon as possible, especially as I believe a lot of my players are good enough for the next level up

Well I am now glad I chose to go somewhere other Italy for my first FM09 save, I haven't hit the bug.

Minor Tiidbits (If anyone wants to add their own thoughts go for it)

1) Elevated view in 3d (TV Mode) is the best to see tactical decisions having an effect.
2) There is a better view for watch goals, think it is behind corner or something (see some excellent shots in this)
3) Is everyone elses Ass Man actually able to do Team Talks & Advice in game? Cause mine just seems to disappear when I am into a game.
4) 3-0 in first friendly with Fafe (I love my midfield combo, not a great DM/AM combo like Diagne & Rinaldi or Diagne & Morete, but they are definitely good enough for this level.
5) The number of coaches for my team SUCKS (I have 1 Coach, 1 Ass Man, 2 Scouts and 1 Physio not allowed anymore staff)

It seems that way, which kinda sucks, it will only let me have 1 at all, the limit is one, same with scouts, so when picking these I would say be a little more careful than I was, I have an awesome goalie coach, but the rest of my coaching sucks.

Just got my 2DA Odds and they have me at 20-1, expected midtable, I am happy with that.
As for Fafe playing this season in the 2DA, I have looked into it and they were in the 2DA in 2007/08 but were relegated at the end of that season after finishing 11th and hence why the squad was reasonably acceptable for the new season. now two Friendly Victories chalked up 3-0 & 4-2, the 2 goals against me were when I had my reserves on the pitch and my 2nd best goalie in net.

Friendly Game number 5 rolls around going into it I am 2-1-1, 2 wins at home and a draw and loss away, I am pitted against Naval a club from the division above me, so I go slightly more defensive thinking they will come at me, half time rolls around 0-0, so I have been able to hold them out, then my striker goes down injured, and shall we say the rest is history. As for Red Star, three league games into the season and it's been a tough start. 1-0-2 record, with our only win a late penalty for a 1-0 away at Romorantin. Was a big shock nonetheless! I will need to work on our tactics as we're being outplayed in most games. our strikers can't score for toffee either.

They were my exact thoughts throughout the season! But, tbf we actually had alot more potential than we were showing, and I'm sure it's the same with Red Star.

I'm gonna see out the season with FC Rouen, then resign and holiday 'til the restart.
