Squad, tactical anylasis:

As you might know, I am a Hull fan and I’ve watched us this season climb to the top of premiership table, beat Arsenal on their own turf, scare Manchester United but lose to them 4-3, draw against Liverpool and Chelsea and look destined for a Uefa Cup place. But as you know, the second half of the season wasn’t too good for us and we have dropped to 13th in the table. Still a good finish for a team that have never played in the Premiership League before. But just how did Hull manager, Phil Brown, do this? And how can Hulls first half of the season be achieved in FM. Hopefully I can answer these questions.

Tactics:

Obviously Phil Browns tactics played some kind of role in Hulls success but how important were they?

First Formation: The 4-5-1

This formation was used by Brown for the first couple of premiership games before striker Daniel Cousin joined Hull from Rangers. This formation was defensively minded and looked like this:

                                                GK
RB CB CB LB
			DM DM
RM LM
					AM
					TM

GK: The goalkeeper was normally very solid anddidn’t come out and collect long balls, that was up to the deep defensive line. Otherwise he played like any normal goal keeper would.

FBs: The full backs where generally quite defensive but would still support the wingers and whip in deep crosses. Otherwise they’d play a flat back four and keep in line with the other centre backs.

CBs: The two centre backs would both man mark the 2 strikers on the opposing team and play a deep defensive line. Neither would venture forward at any time except from set pieces.

DMs: The two DMs would both shield the defence and do a lot of closing down. Only one of them would venture forward at any time whilst the other would sit back.

WFs: Both of them would have high attacking roles and wouldn’t really defend very much. Both of them would be given high creative freedom and would do a lot of cutting inside.

AM: The AM would be the playmaker. He’d be involved in all the attacking play and would be given a free role and lots of creative freedom. The player have to be a very good player and be capable of taking on players hitting long passes and basically been the creative player in the team.

ST: The striker would be a target man not necessarily good in the air but capable of holding up the ball. The player would have to be strong and fast and also be able to score goals as he would be the main goal scorer in the team.

Overall: The team would play possession football and play balanced football. They’d launch a lot of counter attacks and would be hard to break down in defence.

My Favourite Players To Play In This Tactic:

GK: Myhill

RB: Ricketts

LB: Dawson

CB: Turner

CB: Gardener

DM: Ashbee

DM: Boateng

RM: Geovanni

LM: Fagan

AM: Bullard

ST: Cousin

If you choose this team you are relying on Bullard to be the main creative spark in the team. Fortunately he is perfect for the job being Hulls best player. Fagan will have to be retrained as a LM which I feel is a good idea as he fills the needs of that position.

Second Formation: The balanced 4-4-2

This is the formation used by Brown for the first half of the season, the formation that they used when they beat Arsenal and scared Manchester United. A very balanced formation that looked like this:

                                                 GK
RB CB CB LB
				CMD CMA
RM LM
				ST ST

GK: Would come out and collect long balls and basically play any good goalkeeper would.

FBs: Quite attacking and would support the wingers whenever possible and whip in crosses from deep. The wingers would occasionally take on players but wouldn’t if they felt they would be putting their team under pressure if they lost the ball.

CBs: Would play a normal defensive line and not venture forward accept from set pieces. One of the centre backs would man mark the striker whilst the other would act as a sweeper and bring the ball out of defence.

CMD: The defensive minded CM would try and keep possession of them ball and help the defence out. Occasionally he would go forward but he wouldn’t dribble the ball, he’d just pass and keep possession.

CMA: The attacking minded CM would be the link man to the strikers and would be very creative, and given lots of creative freedom. The player would occasionally help out defensively but he would normally be at the other side of the pitch.

WFs: The wingers would provide much needed width and would stay out wide. They’d help out defensively when needed but would still have some creative freedom and would take on players.

STs: The two strikers would have to link up well together and score a fair few goals. Both would have to be fast and good on the air and ground. Both of them would stay forward but would not take on players often.

Overall: As you can see the formation is very balanced and relies heavily on teamwork and the players blending.

My Favourite Players To Play In This Tactic:

GK: Myhill

RB: Mendy

LB: Ricketts

CB: Turner

SW: Zayatte

CMD: Ashbee

CMA: Bullard

RM: Geovanni (but will be more effectual in the CMA role so I advise you make him swap positions with Bullard during the match).

LM: Halmosi

ST: Cousin

ST: Fagan

So tactics did play an important role in Hulls success but what else did.

Staff: Make sure you get the best staff in and around you. And by this I don’t mean the coaches that give you the most stars in training. No, of course I recommend having at least three stars in every aspect of training but when you hire staff I think you should make your decision judged on Mental Stats. As well the staff being English speakers also helps as the players can communicate with them.

Training: Obviously don’t overwork the players but make sure they get the most out of training. I recommend using TUGS training as that has worked for me very well.

Transfers: Even though the squad is far from world class I don’t recommend buying lots of players and having a massive squad clearout. The key to doing well is letting the players blend and play well and the fewer players you sell and buy the better the players will blend. As well if you are looking at buying a player have a look at their personality because if they don’t fit in with the rest of the squad they aren’t going to blend very well.

Well I hope this has helped and there is only one other thing that will help, have faith, do not give up and yes sorry but I just have to say this COME ON YOU HULL!

This is unfortunately the first version of the game in which I'm going to resist the temptation to guide The Tigers to glory...I'm a ruthless bastard on FM and I just can't bring myself to steam into City's squad selling the legends that are Ian Ashbee, Boaz Myhill, Michael Turner, Andy Dawson and the two DEANO's, I thought this might finally be the update where these players are rewarded for their obvious premier league talents with some respectable stats, yet again i am disappointed, particularly with Myhill who is in the real world one of the best keepers in the country with Division 3 stats on FM09. Even more annoying is Ash's mental stats, this guy is the greatest captain the game has ever seen, taking a mid table division 3 team by the scruff of the neck and dragging them to the promised land and yet there are probably non league players on the game with better mental stats than him, why? how?

I've been going to City since '93 and playing FM and demolishing most of the squads (with good reason!) since '99, this year i thought it might be different...I was sadly wrong.

Unfortunately pre-season everyone and their dog was expecting the Tigers to 'do a Derby'. In fact some so called pundits were predicting less than 10 points all season. In that climate is was pretty much impossible to get SI's head researchers to accept that City were choc full of decent players really. As it is I do think we've over-performed this season. We're light at full backs and could do with a real talent in the centre of midfield.

You're right about Myhill. Not sure how his stats slipped through so low. I'll endeavour to get things looking better for the new year data update.

Looking forward to november the 14th! Can't wait to play the new game for the first time and try out City! Hopefully Myhill will have better stats than you say he has on the new game and also i hope Hull will have a chance of staying up when i'm not managing them!

I've started a game with City, set my ambitions low, stating 'attempt to avoid relegation'. With the team on this game, there is no chance I'll be able to recreate our exceptional real life form, in my opinion anyway. Not been particularly extravagant in the transfer market, £3 million doesn't get you very far, and with only 20k spare wage budget, you really have to be resourceful.

Transfers in:

Mascio- MC- Cisco Roma- 35k- A dead ball specialist, only 17 so more one for the future, may feature occasionally this season.

Fabian Carini- GK- Murcia- 110k- I thought this was a brilliant deal for a keeper who has won 69 caps for his country, and at 28, he still has a long time left. Provides definite competition for Myhill.

Kike Mateo- AMC- Sporting- 300k- Provides a bit more competition in midfield, I feel he is more than capable of performing.

Igor De Carmargo- ST- Standard- 500k (Loan Fee)- Didn't want to commit to taking an expensive chance on a striker so went for a relatively inexpensive loan option. Looks a slightly better than Cousin, giving me more depth in my squad.

Also on the 1st of December I will be signing 3 Americans who are at the end of their contracts in the MLS- Michael Parkhurst, Marvell Wynne and Justin Mapp. I highly recommend you take a look, there are lots of players who's deals are expiring, leaving you to take them for nothing. You should have the MLS as a playable league, or American players loaded.

I have 2 million spare, some which I might transfer in to my wage budget, leaving a million for January. First match against Wigan, will keep you updated.

Right just hit January, and as I expected, it's been a struggle, 17 points from 20 games played, despite this we are out of the relegation zone, albeit on goal difference:

I felt I'd made a big signing in acquiring the services of Landon Donovan on a free from LA Galaxy, however he hasn't quite had the start I hoped for, but salvaged me a point with an injury time equalizer against Blackburn. I reckon I'm going to need to get the best out of him if we're going to have a chance of staying up. Captain Ian Ashbee is having a solid season, keeping Boateng out of the team on most occasions. Cousin is top scorer, bagging some crucial goals, but Geovanni has, unfortunately, not had the same effect on the game as in real life.

I've sold Wayne Brown (575k), John Welsh (325k), Ryan France (100k) and Sam Ricketts (3million) Ricketts went to West Brom, and I felt I got good money for him, whilst having better alternatives already in my squad, such as this bargain:

http://i198.photobucket.com/albums/aa243/rhodesy1991/Masilela.jpg

For 350k, I felt he was a must buy, not heard him mentioned on here before and was spotted by one of my scouts, but at 23 there is still time to improve. Can I keep the Tigers up? I will return to update at the end of the season! :)

Well played Mikal, I myself have been using that formation! I managed to stay up first season, finished 15th, 7 points clear of relegation! Managed to sign Emile Heskey in the January transfer window for £3.3million, a risky move possibly, but he chipped in with 5 goals in 14 appearances whilst getting a few assists, too! It's now June 2009, and I've been given £11.15 million to spend for saying I'd get a mid table position, and the KC is getting extended to 38,000 seats.

Apologies for lack of screenshots, on a different PC, I'll post some later :).

I have made an offer for Fraga.

£1.6M and 20% of next sale was enough and seeing as he's only 20 I will see how Myhill does and if he's good then I will use Fraga in cups and the odd Prem game to get him ready as he will be my no.1 next season.

Not a good start for him as he said Hull are a stepping stone.

Not off to a very good start a 3-1 defeat to Bolton.

Guy's i'm gunna quit my Hull game as I just don't have the patience I mean I don't know how you did it only winning 3 games out of 20 and still finishing the season.

Guy's I was looking for a CB and Balde is only like £65,000 do you think I should sign him, the problem is his wages are £19,250.

Any cheap GK's you could recommend, no dearer than £2m.

If your still after a CB try Fuentes, transfer listed at Villa and only costs 200k.

You dodged a bullet with Balde, I'm desperate to get him off my wage bill :D

I'll play a few more games after i've done my accounting assignment and see how I get on... If i'm still winning I will get my tactics up for you lot, but i'm sure it will need a fair amount of tweaking. Good luck with the rest of your games!

@joe seddon - Assuming the game will install through steam, then you don't need to download the patch as it does it automatically through steam for you.
