Question regarding tactical roles

Quick question regarding preferred tactical roles - if a manager has a role set that he isn't able to fit into his preferred formation (for example an inside forward in a 4-4-2) what happens?

So essentially using a Wide Midfielder as an Inside forward from a deeper position? Would you still keep the Wide Midfielder PI's too?

No, you customise the role as closely as possible to match the inside forward. And yes, he can made to almost exactly represent an inside forward starting deeper and gives you the added benefit of better defending. As far as your original question goes, not sure wha you mean about a manager that has a role set. Do you mean a player that is best at a certain role that doesn't match your current formation? If so, then yes, adapt roles that you can, or play a player in a different role. As long as he has the basic skills you want from the position, I wouldn't worry about how the game displays his best roles.

I will assume you have a player that the RDS has suggested plays best as an IF, and you want to fit him into a 442. In this case you would want to ask yourself how best you can fit that player into a role with some customisation

If he is an IF and has the attributes to play as one of the wide mids (ML, Defensive Mid, AP, WM) then he can slot into the role, he may not be perfect but you can customise the settings to match the IF to some extent

eg. WM - Cut Inside, dribble more, roam from position.
