Not necessarily, without the third place safety net teams would have approached the group stage differently, and who knows what would have happened? Personally, as a Northern Irishman I love the 3rd place qualifying, as a football fan, I think it's daft and a 16 team tournament is the only sensible option. Imagine everyone thought they'd get hammered in every game but they're a resilient bunch. Can't believe Will Grigg didn't play a single minute throughout the four games though.
