[FM12] From Hopeless Case to Lost Cause

It has been along time since I touched FM, and maybe posting here will help me make time to get back into it. FM12 is the last version I bought, but might get a newer version soon. Whether that will be FM16 or not is questionable.

I am also very bad at the game, so don't expect any Champions league triumphs in this thread. Sackings, relegations and bitterness are the order of the day.

I don't really have any goals in this career, just go where things take me. I didn't want to start in England though, as it is too easy to just stay there forever.

Game setup:

Standard database, all regular leagues loaded from: Argentina (2 tiers), Australia (1), Austria (2), Belgium (3), Brazil (3), England (6), France (4), Germany (3), Holland (2), Italy (4), Mexico (2), Peru (1), Romania (2), Scotland (4), South Africa (2)

Start date: June 2011

Manager:

Jose Bumbescu, Romanian with Portugese as a second nationality. Sunday league experience and unemployed. in June 2011.

June 2011 - February 2012

After applying for a few jobs and being unsuccessful, second tier Romanian team CF Braila approached me out of the blue in November. It seemed fitting for an unknown Romanian to start in his home country, so despite the look of the club I took the job. I arrived at the start of a long month winter break.

Dacia_Unirea_logo.png

There were far too many players in the squad, and the wage bill was over the limit. Morale was rock bottom, almost straight sets of abysmal.

By the end of the winter break we had played a few friendlies. I had hoped to learn a bit about the players. About the only thing I learned is that my first tactic failed badly, and that this group really, really suck. The friendlies were largely against clubs at a lower level than us, with a couple against others in the Romanian second tier.

I only managed to offload very few players, about half had their contracts paid out. I had to bring one in as the first choice goalkeeper was in horrid form in the friendlies and the back-ups are complete waste. One is heading off next season. At least I squeezed under the wage budget.

As we enter the second half of the season, things are looking a little precarious. We are clear of the relegation zone, but with the form displayed in the friendlies I don't see how we can stay there. The board's expectations are slightly higher than that.

Around the world

I have the habit of adding in the continental champions leagues and national tournaments into these threads. Its probably not too interesting from 2011, given the real life tournaments have long since been forgotten, but anyway, here are the results of those which finished up before I play my first competition game.

This might be a slow process as I don't have all that much time for games, and FM isn't always top of the list when I do. (If it was, I would have a newer version by now).

Good start - and great to see someone else who is sticking with the pre-FM15 versions! :applause:

And someone who, like myself, is crap at the game and won't be winning everything within a few seasons... :D

Thank you, dllu. I'm amazed at how good some people are at this game, in any of its iterations.

CF Braila

Romanian Second League - Group 1

CF Braila (11th) v FCM Dunarea Galati (7th)

I decided to play the new goalkeeper despite a lack of match fitness. He needs game time some time, and decided to start him. I don't know if t was a mistake or not. We went behind courtesy of a cross we failed to challenge for, reminiscent of the friendlies. There are real problems with marking and in the air in defence. A second followed still in the first half, thanks to another unmarked man. This time he was found a little outside the box from a corner and a long shot went straight through goalkeeper's hands. We were still outplayed in the second halh, but no more scoreboard damage done. 2-0 loss.

In the backroom, we got in a fitness coach and a goalkeeping coach (with goalkeeping 19). The fitness coach doesn't look too good to be honest, but we didn't have one at all.

Clubul Sportiv Municipal Studentesc Iasi (10th) v CF Braila (11th)

We tried a new formation, with one less defender given that having a full quota doesn't help. Iasi had the run of play for most of the first half. Both teams had players hobbling after nasty challenges and I had to take Nila from the field in the 35th. We started getting the ball forward a bit towards half time. We kept that going just after the half, without getting any real chances. Until we won a corner, where Moise overcooked the kick but midfiedler/winger Otvos got back onto it and outjumped the defender to head home. As the card count was mounting for us, I stsrted getting concerned. And no sooner had we scored than captain Boboc received his second yellow and an early exit. We held on gallantly, with the change to containing stratgey. Then Moise received his second yellow late in the piece, the commentator called it a dive but Moise - prbably our most reliable player - was sent form the field nonetheless. Iasi scored in the 86h to level and that was the story done. 1-1 draw.

Otvos had received a yellow as well and enough cards for a suspension; meaning the captain, our best player, and the goalscorer and man of the match will be unavailable for the next game.

FC Viitorul Costanta (4th ) v CF Braila (11th)

Despite having a lot of players, fielding a team for this match was hard enough. Actually trying to compete with one of the better teams in the league, very difficult. Surprisingly, we held our own all match. There was an early Voicu goal disallowed, but at least there were chances being made. A second half free kick by right-back Bosoi found Dan Iurisinti's head substitute for an unexpected lead. Bosoi tried to repeat the feat later for no return. Viitorul had a late chance or two late but failed to capitalise, and our depleted team scored big win away from home. It was needed too, otherwise thanks to other results we would be in the relegation zone.

After the match came the news that Marius Voicu would be out for 2-3 months. Three months would be season ending. Of less importance, winger Prodan will be out for 9 to 12 days, but he won't really be missed.

CF Braila (11th) v FC Snagov (13th)

Snagov are only goal difference clear of the drop zone, and one point behind us. This loomed as a critical match heading in.

The game started out well, with Lupu being run in from a great ball (by the sntadards of this league). Unfortunately, he pushed the simple chance wide. After 19, a Moise cross found the head of Panzaru, who hit the crossbar. The ricochet struck the opposing keeper in the back and we went one up. Snagov equalised right on helf time. Just afte the half we were awarded a doubtful looking penatly. Otvos sent it straight at the keeper, collected the rebound and went on to strike the woodwork, collect the rebound and be dispossessed. The winner came in the 81st, courtesy of the transfer listed Cortache from just beyond the corner of thne penalty area. The 2-1 win sees out of danger for now.

FC Dinamo 1948 Bucharest II (10th) v CF Braila (9th)

We pressured early and took the lead when Panzaru floated a nothing ball in from the right the opposing goalkeeper knocked it in for us. Terrible play all round. The next half hour or so was nothingness, and we took the lad in at the half. Nearing full time we managed to find two quick passes across the opposition box, opening up the goal and Costache was the lucky one on the end who put it home. Just into stoppage time, after I had brought the new goalkeeper on for some match time we conceded. Not his fault, but unfortunate. In the end, unlucky to concede but lucky to score twice, I'll take the win. Just 55 people turned up to watch, but it is their second team.

And the run in the second half of the month landed me second in the manager of the month for March.

CF Braila (8th) v FC Botosani (9th)

A strange game this one, for April Fools. We were under the puymp in the opening minutes, then had the best of it for a while starting with a crossbar effort from recalled striker Adrian Campeanu. Both sides proved reluctant to take a shot, and when the opener did come it was an unexpected cracker from well outside box as midfielder Valentin Stan scored his first for us. Botosani again pressured without looking likely until the half. We then pushed hard, with some decent chances but none were put away. That cost us as Botosani levelled late thanks to a defensive error.

CF Braila (8th) v Gloria Bazau (16th)

Some luck early, with the opening goal coming from a backpass gone badand Panzaru running about 30 metres to toe-poke home before the opposition goalkeeper had moved the required five. A second came just five minutes later. Nica was a l;ate substitute, brought on with the game safe just to get some playing time. He was on the end of a superbly weighted long free kick from Bosoi and headed home the third. We move to 7th, just three points from the top (no chance, just showing how tight this league is) and now eight clear of the drop. Nica's eight minutes was enough to make the league's team of the week. The gap to the top became five points after the Sunday game was played.

Sageata Naodri (6th) v CF Braila (7th)

The unbeaten run came to a crashing end. We barely saw the ball in the opening half hour, so it came as no surprise when we conceded after around 35 minutes. The goal itself was a surprise, the finishing in this league is woefu so to see someone hit the target from an angle was the unexpected part. Dodgy defender Marin made matter worse putting in our net with no real pressure on. And nothing I could do improved things.

CF Braila (8th) v FC Municipal Bacau (11th)

This was probably our worst performance since the friendlies. If we ever touched the ball it was an utter shambles. After looking like doing nothing and haven fallen a goal behind I tried a more attacking formation just to see if we could manage one foray forward. That particular formation ran the risk of leaving us opened up at the back even more, and sure enough that was the immediate result. 2-0 down with firing a shot. Then Panzaru and Boise both suffered knocks.

After the match the enw came that Panzaru will be out for 4-5 weeks. He has been surprisingly good for someone with no ability.

Callatis Mangalia (8th) v CF Braila (9th)

I reverted back to a flat 4-4-2, the third and least used formation we are training and made a few selection changes based on recent form. A first half of nothing. We were outplayed, but had the best chance if Otvos had pulled the trigger from about 8 metres with no defence near him rather than passing backwards outside the area. The start of the second half again exposed the lack of pace in defence, a ball over the top opened us up and we were one down. A lucky equaliser by youngster Punga, only still on the pitch due to the age rules, saw us draw level and the match petered out from there.

Fixtures_2012_0304.jpg

So, after a solid run for a while we really made little progress up the table. At least the gap to the danger zone is better than when I took over.

Table_2012_05_01.jpg

Morale is starting to fall away again, though nowhere the near the drastic levels it was when I arrived. We need to pull a win from somewhere to just keep things level and see out the season.

April saw the champions leagues in North America and Oceania finish up

I am not sure I will stick with doing match by match reports. It seems to slow things down a fair bit. I do enjoy them in some other threads, so I'll see what happens.

May - June 2012

CF Braila

Romanian Second League - Group 1

May begins with the news that Marius Voicu is back in full training after an eight week injury layoff. The 22 year old will probably slot back into the midfield somewhere soon enough. In the meantime he wil start from the bench to build match fitness back up. He's not a star, but he is useful and has some finishing which given our lack of goals might be handy.

CF Braila (9th) v FC Farul Constanta (13th)

In a game we were expected to dominate, we did. On the pitch, on the stats sheet, on the scoreboard. No, wait, not that last one. 17 shots to 3 and the closest we came to scoring was Punga hitting the woodwork twice. One of those rebounded straight into Bosoi, who lamely knocked it to the opposing goalkeeper. Surprisingly we only had 40% possession. The highlights would have suggested much more. Despite that anomaly we deserved far more than a scoreless draw. Well, I guess not with the lack of firepower at our disposal.

CS Ototpeni (4th) v CF Braila (10th)

Smashed. The final score was a joke really. The half time 3-0 score was a fairer reflection on the game. Punga's goal after the break was the only real highlight for us, and that came courtesy oif a blind long ball he ran onto, then with a nice touch on the right controlled and shot on the second touch with the left to hit home. We got another consolation goal to limit the damage to 3-2, it could easily have been 6-0.

With morale getting towards the danger point, I decided a team meeting was in order. The reaction was slightly positive, but I doubt it will be enough to see us come home strong.

CF Braila (10th) v Delta Tulcea (8th)

An uneventful first half. We seemed to have the better of the play, but no real chances came and Delta Tulcea gfot better as the half progressed. The second half wa spretty much a carbon copy. A scoreless draw was about right. Overall we were probably better, but if you can't score you don't deserve to win.

CF Braila (10th) v Branesti (9th)

We do not seem to be able fiond anything at all. Pressued for the opening 20 minutes, Marin gave up a pointless penalty to see uf all behind. Punga is becoming something of a woodwork king. He can only get chances from long balls, and then either shunt them wide or hit the sticks. After the half the pattern was much the same, with Branesti pressuring the whole time and us conceding once more. The fans are fuming after that match.

With one match to play we are only two points, and three positions, clear of relegation. Some sort of result is vital.

The matches to watch are:

CF Braila (10th) v Astra Il Giurgiu (15th, relegated)

Callatis Mangalia (5th) v FC Farul Constanta (12th)

FC Municipal Bacau (11th) v CS otopeni (2nd)

FC Snagov (13th, highest in the relegation zone) v FCM Dunarea (Galati (7th)

10th CF Braila 37 points, -3 GD
11th FC Municipal Bacau 36 points, +1 GD
12th FC Farul Constanta 35 points, -4 GD (how are they ahead of Snagov??? head-to-head?)
----
13th FC Snagov 35 points, 0 GD

Goalkeeper Alin Bucuroi is unavailable, travelling back from Romania under 21 squad duties. He did not play.

In a desprate attempt to get some goals, I went with my more attacking formation. Really the difference between a draw and a loss is probably not going to mean much.

CF Braila (10th) v Astra Il Giurgiu (15th)

In the 12th minute Panzaru had a firm shot blocked by the goalkeeper, the best chance of the game to that point. A minute later Astra's Marcu took a free kick from around 25 yards and found the top right corner 1-0 down.

Astra almost doubled the lead in the 22nd as Prunescu's header only marginally went wide and we were looking in danger. In the 23rd minute midfielder Valetin Stan knocked the ball to Punga, who laid off a good ball towards Palimaru on the edge of the area. Punga went down as he kicked. Palimaru slotted it to the goalkeeper's left to level the scores while the physios ran out to Punga.

Punga was clearly not moving well, but in the 31st minute he came close to taking a lead with a shot from a wide angle barely missing. That was it for the half, though Palimaru had a couple of shots on target just prior to the whistle, and 1-1 reflected general play pretty well.

Not much happened in the second half, Moise and Punga combied for a clever one-two but Moise's shot missed narrowly. 1-1 the final score. But was it enough?

FC Municipal Bacau lost, which was enough to make us safe regardless of other results.

FC Farul Constanta had a draw and moved up a spot.

Snagov lost, meaning the relegated team was the one in the position before the final games and our result counted for nothing.

And that was the season over, with three weeks before the transfer window opened

With the season over, it was not a surprise when the 36 year old Alin Panzaru announced his retirement from the game. He was useful on the right wing in his last season but not irreplacable. He played 66 agmes at the club strecthing back to 2006/07.

Our only reliable defender, Laurentiu Ivan, agreed to sign for divisional rivals Bacau some months ago, which will hit the back badly. Ivan made 28 starts this season, the most of anyone in the squad. We simply could not afford the wage demands.

Backup goalkeeper Stefan Leu is also moving on, but will be no loss.

Eight others have contracts expiring and will probably leave. Adrian Campaneau should have been our best striker, but was sadly out of form the whole time.

Midfielder Andrei Mila was on loan anyway, and while he made 20 starts is perhaps not really up to the mark as a regular starter.

Regular goalkeeper Alin Bucuroiu was also on loan and has no intention of staying at this club, or apparently his home club.

Others are of no consequence other than clearing salary space.

20 year old Marius Oprea will returns from loan 1 July, but doesn't yet look up to being a starter. He did make 44 apparances at his loan club, a level below eher we sit, which is good for experience.

The board announced the budgets for next season, no transfer budget due to the club's dire financial dire position. The wages budget is pretty much unchanged, meaning I have about £300 a week to work with above current spending.

The transfer window opened on 27 June, with no action in the closing days of the month. Contracts expired on 30 June, so there may be some free players around by waiting a few days.

We struggled at times to replace tiring or injured players due to needing to field two under 21 players at all times. So, I will be looking to see if anyone can be promoted from the youth squad as well as for uncontracted young players. And also, good players (for this level) generally.

If I get the players, I'll match the tactics to suit the squad. I have my preferences regarding formations, etc, but need players first and foremost.

On June 30 the board announced the expectations for the new season. A top half finish is expected. I will stick with that, given the run at the end of the season I'm not confident that is achievable. Anything more will require a bigger rebuild than I normally manage in one off-season.

Finally, for my clubs' part in this this update Marcel Otvos was voted the fans player of the year. His form dropped away badly towards the end, but so did everyone else's.

The season finished just in time for you I think.

Very much so, although I'm not too sure the nest season will be much better. I've failed to get the players I needed to address key areas. Update for the off-season and opening games to come soon hopefully (I haven't started the season proper yet, so no spoilers there - just a feel for where things sit).

CF Braila

Romanian Second League, Group 1

A series of hastily arranged friendlies did not provide any great belief in the season ahead. Mostly against lower opposition each game was hard and the results less than flattering. One thing became clear, both goalkeepers decided on a new tactic. In essence diving on the ball, fumbling, and laying on the ground while an opposing striker collects the ball and taps it in appears to be the new fashion.

On the transfer front, I couldn't get the player to improve much either front or back. I think the defence will be a little better, but up front I can't see any improvements.

I also struggled to find free young players to fill a role, a necessity when at least two under-23 players have to be in the eleven in the league. Despite that, I actually ended up with more signings than departures, although I am still trying to offload a few and unless a good striker comes up I think the hiring is over.

2015-09-28_00003.jpg

I am hoping that Iuhas will provide a bit more solidity at the back. He's nothing special, but a little better than what we had after Ivam's departure. Christan Apostol is another central defender, hopefulll having these two allows me to offload Calin Marin who is highly rated at this level but regularly terrible.

Vasile is a 19 year midfielder who can play on the left. That might allow Otvos to polay more in the middle, if Vasile plays. The idea, for now at least, is that he will get a a game more often than not, to fill the under-23 quota. He's pretty close to being a first team starter anyway.

Muntenau is on loan from our parent club, and fills the right winger role left vacant by Panzarus' retirement. How often I will play a formation requiring that role is an open question though. others are mostly back-up for areas where we have no injury cover, except Dragan who is in the U19 squad as a their goalkeeper.

I have until 17 September to get rid of some deadwood.

The media have predicted 7th for us. I'm not sure of staying out of relegation.

CF Braila (Last Season: Liga II, Group 1, 10th) v FC Victoria Branesti (Last season: Liga II, Grougp 1, 9th)

The opening game of the season showed that the game is not about how good a team looks, it is about goals. We dominated in play, to no avail. In the 69th the opening goal of the season came. A superb challenge by Cosmin Iuhas ensure the opposing player never got a touch, and Iuhas put in the back of our own net. At that stage shots were running about 10 to 1 in our favour, but they didn't need a shot to take a lead. Palimaru scored in stoppage to time redeem a point from a game where across the park we deserved three. But its goals that count, and that is one area where we have nothing.

Romanian Cup, 4th Round

Muresel Deva (Third League) v CF Braila

Away to a team a level below, we started favourites but didn't stay favourlites for long after the start. cristian Deaconescu, in particular, tore us apart. He scored the opener after a superb pass met his scintillating run. Down 1-0 after half an hour, we started to play ourselves into the game a little weithout ever threatening. The second half was tighter, we missed a couple of gettable but not simple chances. And then on the 87th were sunk when Deaconescu made a simple assist and Davaru put it home. An early exit from the cup against a lower league team was not what the fans or board wanted to see.

Fixtures_2012_08.jpg

I really do not know where goals will come from, but I am at least hoping we can keep things a little tighter at the back. (Until morale gets hit, once that happens the decline will probably be terminal.)

CF Braila

Romanian Second League

CF Braila v FC Ceahlaul Patra Neamt

We had a bit of luck just before the break, as the opening goal came from a nothing cross by Otvos. Martinez managed to defelct it fome from 15 yeards out and we had a lead. It didn't take lonmg after the breal for Pavel to show he would be the star oif the half, equalising from range and putting us back under pressure. Ten minutes later we were behind. Otvos, under pressure from Pavel, attempted to play the ball across the pitch to the keeper missed. Lopez ran on to the ball, Vlad parried the first attempt but had no chance of gettting near the rebound shot. Our half time lead become a deficit with less than 60 played. We equalised when Punga found the ball heading his way from a half clearance after a corner. He slotted the ball to the goallkeeper's left to secure a point we probably deserved.

Callitas Mangalis (13th) v CF Braila (11th)

Not knowing what to do, I decided to try my least preferred of the three tactivce being trained. It has only one striker, and due to the under-21s (I think I may have under-23 in a previous post, oops) rule Punga is that man. Anyway, it started well enmough, a cross from Stan made after a throw found Vasile (the other under21) who headed home. Vasile picked up a yellow not long afterwards, but it was worth it as Callitas had to make an early change. Callatis cvame out the much stronger side after the break, with three good chances in quick succession. I decided to give it a few minutes to settle down, but that didn't happen. And in the end a corner cost us an eqialiser. I switched back to a 4-4-2 playing counter and brough on Palimaru to partner Punga. That gacve us some control back, ubcluding a period of four headers in row where the fourt hit the woodwork. In the end, though, my delay in making a change possibly cost two points.

The transfer window closed without us making any more moves, in or out. My fate is sealed. Its just a matter of resigning before getting sacked.

CF Braila (12th) v FCM Dunarea Galati (7th)

We had all the ball in the opening ten minutes, but again that means nothing without goals. One trip to our end, one goal down. A superb cross from the near corner flag met the head of a diving Cristea. I am at a complete loss with what to do with this team. Some hope was given when they went down to ten men thanks to a Dragu red card. It didn't help. After the break I went with a slightly more attacking philosophy in the the hope of breaking something open. That failed until a couple of subs were made. Then we peppered their goal the final 20 minutes, for no score. Its just about time to resign.

FC Brasov (1st) v CF Braila (12th)

It was clear from the beginning that when we were to get beaten in this one, we would have been outplayed everywhere and deserve the thumping. The crispness of the passing, timing of the runs, and just speed of play in complete control was a step above anything I had seen so far this save. Yet, somehow, despite 11 shots to 1, and some of those high quality chances, it was a scoreless fisrst half. Even the next half hour was somehow scoreless. That was broken from a corner, but the goal was disallowed, and Brasov still didn't have the deserved lead. it took until the 83rd, Vlad parried a first, very strong shot, but was unable to get to the second. He did well this game and the lack of defenders anywhere near the ball was hardly his fault. It could easily have been 6-0 or even more.

But its not my problem any more. Straight after the match came the news that I had been sacked after just 300 days.

My career stats do not make good reading at this stage.

I forgot to get a screenshot of the table after the sacking, instead here is one from a week later. CF Braila have a win against their name.

No idea yet. As you might imagine the offers haven't exactly been flooding in. A few jobs have come up in some lower leagues, but I haven't got any of them as yet. Hopefully, wherever it is, things gio a little better. But that's FM-life for me, occasionally some minor titles, often some major failings. It keeps the ride a ride, if not always enjoyable.

The new year rolled around, but a new job.

November-December 2012

Nothing of my career to report, a few jobs knocked back and a couple I didn't bother with because relegation from the bottom available league looked inevitable.

So, its just a global wrap. African and Asian Champions Leagues finished up in November. The CWC was in December, and Messi cleaned up the end of year player awards again.

January - April 2013

There is not much to say really. My application even got laughed at by an amateur Belgian team, that's how low my stocks are. All the jobs that came up for bottom feeder sides were set in relegation, and it didn't make sense to me to take over when I would have to leave at season's end. Eventually, something came up. But before then the African Cup of Nations was held.

And its back to the Second League (a.k.a Liga II, FM12 doesn't seem to have consistent naming here). Surprisingly, I got the job with a mid-table club and not a confirmed cellar dweller. Although they weren't "safe" by any means when I took over.

Table_2013_04_19.jpg

That team report summarises the glaring problems. I've gone with a flat 4-4-2 to start with, foccussing passing along the flanks. There is experience in the back four, so hopefully despite being down on skills they can do a job. And maybe at this club there might be a few goals. Unfortunately, Popovici is a loan player. So, if we see the season out safely there are no guarantees he will be here the next. In the meantime he looks good for getting something on the scoreboard more often, though he is in a goal drought.

TeamReport_2013_04_19.jpg

Gaz Metan Severin (8th) v FC Hunedoara (12th)

First up, a chance of early points. So, how will I blow it? The under 21 rule hit before kick-off, weakening the central midfield even more. Just when it looked like, once again, those up forward weren't prepared to make run through gaps in a defence, Popovici laid one off to Vancea, wrong-footing the goalkeeper and we got the lead. That is the sort of work I like to see tried more often from the pair up front. After the break the under 21 rule paid off, Neacsa with a one-two with Popovici before the young player hammered it from range to double the lead. For the third Vancea on a run again, although he wasn't offside I'll never know, ran to the post with the ball. His shot was blocked but ricochetd to Popovici for a simple tap in. 65 gone, both strikers with a score and a 3-0 lead. At this point, I was happy with my start at the club. 3-0 remained the score and our goal was really only threatened the once, an early shot striking the cross-bar.

Cosic picked up an injury late in the game and will be out for 2-3 weeks. That could hurt a bit as we have little cover.

FC Maramures Universitar Baia Mare (14th) v Gaz Metan Severin (9th)

This was a really ugly game. We probably went forwards more, but the ball came out again quickly. When we had to defend it was usually for long periods. The first half came to nothing. Much the same pattern ensued after the break, until a corner found the head of Jovanovic and we took a lead. From the 70 minute mark onwards, we were undre pressure the whole time. An open goal was missed, and a few minutes later a shot from range was knocked into the crossbar by our goalie, landed at an opponent's feet and he failed to pull the trigger. In the end, we somehow managed to get three points. One point might have been deserved, three is an absolute steal.

Neacsa's goal won goal of the month.

A seven point buffer over the drop with just five games to go. Hopefully safety can be secured soon.

May - June 2013

Gaz Metan Severin

Romanian Second League - Group 2

There was nothing further to report before the first match of May.

FC Bihor (9th) v Gaz Metan Severin (5th)

Just the one change in selections as veteran Olah replaces the injured Cosic at left back. Morale is really quite poor heading into this game, despite two wins. Both sides hit the cross-bar in the opening 15 minutes, there seems to be an awful lot of crossbar action in this save. After 30, Bihor took the lead. I can't really blame any of our defenders or midfield for it, they got a touch on almost every pass but the rebound kept going to Bihor players until an easy option opened up. We were getting outplayed well before this point though. We almost replied immediately, Popovici's shot parried as was Jovanovic' who ran onto it. Woodwork again not long later, Vancea danced around two defenders in the box only to tap it onto the right hand upright. Fiourou was having a bad game at right back and it was no surprise when he picked up a yellow early in the second half. He was one of the two under 21s, so I couldn't replace him. We had been in the game for much of the second half, but fell away again. When a second came it was no great surprise. A solid header put Bihor's Parvu one on one with Steca, our defenders couldn't back track in time, and the shot was too good. In the end, we weren't good enough for long enough.

Popovici's yellow card saw him reach the limit and he stands out for the next match.

Despite being well over the wage budget already, I splashed out on Ghanian Francis Bossman. Primarily a defensive midfielder, he can play central midfield as well and looks to be far better than any of our current midfield. I was a little surprised that at this point in the season he came immediately. Even being unsigned I expected it to be an off-season move (which was why the wage didn't worry me).

Gaz Metan Severin (7th) v CS ALro Slatina (4th)

Bossman started on the bench, as I was concerned by the lack of match fitness, though the plan was to make a fairly early substitution to bring him in. It was a fairly even first half, with a few chances from both teams. Popovici's replacement, Stroe, possibly had the best ones but couldn't quite capitalise. Bossman came close to having an impact about ten minutes after coming on, laying off to Vascea, who sent Jovanovic through only to strike the cross bar. Not many more chance came after that, until right on the whistle Vancea again looked right and found Jovanovic. His shot went higher this time.

FC Arges Patesti (11th) v Gaz Metan Severin (6th)

The bookies had us as firm underdogs for this game, but in the opening seven minutes we had five genuince chances at scoring. Of course, we took none. The rest of the opning half, however, belonged to Arges without them really looking threatening. No score at the break. Woodwork FC were again looking good, as we took control for much of the second half but struck the upright and cross bar on the best attempts. Two more good chanes in stoppage time were on target but straight at the goalkeeper. Another scoreless draw. Unlike the previous clkub, there are players who can score here; but I'm still getting nothing out of them.

Vancea reached the yellow card limit and wil sit out the penultimate game of the season.

With two games remaining we sit six points clear of the relegation zone. Even if we lsoe both, other results would have to go badly against us. I'd still like to finish strongly though.

We signed Radu Barbu, a central defender and defensive midfielder, from releagtion bound top tier side CS Mioveni. He will be with us next season, adding some quality to the back.

Mioveni returned the favour by approaching my assistant manager.

FCM Municipal Targu Mores (2nd) v Gaz Metan Severin (7th)

As might be expected in a second versus struggling match, it was clear from the outset who the better team were. We couldn't even keep a clean sheet for ten minutes. A drubbing in front of a near full house (except at the visitor's end) looked inevitable. A red card to Jovanovic immediately after the opening goal didn't help matters. A cracking strike from Dalbea sent us two behind in 16 minutes. And that was three in the 21st. The gulf in class simply incredible for the same division. In the 24th, Patrana was unluckily deemed to have conceded an own goal, 4-0 and the game was only a quarter done. Almost on the half we had our firat real move forward, Stroe finding Popovici between two defenders and the latter scoring from teh edge of the area. It didn't take long after the break for the pattern to re-emerge. two missed tackles, allowing a simple assist and goal. From that point on we at least made them work a bit for their dominance and the goal glut slowed. Indeed, there were no more. 5-1 is hardly successful damage limitation though.

Jovanovic is joined by Balace sitting out the final game through suspension. The challenge by Jovanovic was an ugly one, and he accepted his warning. The FA hands him a further two matches.

With one game to go, we are five points clear of relegation. My job might already be on the line with recent results though, and the final game is no easy task.

Gaz Metan Severin (7th) v FC Viitorul Constanta (2nd)

There was never much chance of our oppoentns putting out a second string team, they came into the game potentially playing for the title.

We got bossed around early, as expected, but at least this time no goals resulted. About 23 minutes in a long ball was sent to Vancea who was tripped just ouside the area. This time when the red card was shown we had a one man advantage. I doubted it would be enough to make the game even in any way. It was Patrana who took the kick, and hit the crossbar (seriously, how many times - both for and against us). No score again at the break, much better I expected, or deserved. 64th minutes, and again we were denied by the crossbar, Popovici from downtown coming so close. Popovici looked as though he may have been offside when a ball from Neasca found him unmarked dead in front and he slotted it. Looking at the replay, he clearly wasn't, he just timed the run perfectly. And that's the way it stayed, a good result against one of the top teams in the division.

Fixtures_2013_0506.jpg

That saw us finish in 6th, I'm not sure what's going on with the colouring of the relegation spots. There is apparently a three way play-off for 9th position between all the teams on 30 points. Presumably the winner of that stays up.

Table_2013_06_09.jpg

During June the initial budget for next season is set. A slight rise in wage budget, and a massive 1k for transfers. The wage increase is good news as I have already signed a couple more players for next season.

20 year old Caldiu Coropca joins from first league team FC Otelul Galati on 1 July, and 19 year old Costa Rican international defender Randall Pena came straight away as he was unsigned. Both these players may get starts next season, thanks to the under 21 rule. Pena would probably start anyway.

That said, the club's financial situation is bleak. 800k in the red and declining.

We have also extended Popovici's loan for another year.

Back up goalkeeper Neagoe wanted out, due to not getting first team football. His contract was up at month's end anyway, but I will need to bring in somebody else who can fill in just in case.

Not surprisingly Ionut Patrana retired from playing when the players went on their break. He remains as an assistant manager. Pena will spend much of his off-season with the Costa Rican squad in the Gold Cup which runs in July.

Before continuing on to the global wrap up, my updated career figures still look gloomy.

It's good to see you back on your managerial feet again. I pull for all of us who haven't yet mastered Football Manager yet. :)

And I'm enjoying the way you write about your story, too.

Thank you, Greyfriars Bobby. I'm not sure of the style sometimes, most of the match stuff I'm writing as the match goes on. So, when I write it I don't know what's coming next myself.

I'm hoping for better things next season. I don't see promotion being in the offering yet, but solid mid-table and hopefully no long form slumps along the way (they would lead to another sacking). I think the side should look in much better shape next season. The top teams looked so much better that I still don't think we can compete with them, other than via luck.

Also, the next post will include the 2012/13 results from the big leagues.

Not sure the relegation makes sense. If there was a playoff between the teams level on points why was the team above relegated anyway?

I think that was just a programming/display glitch, they didn't actually enter the playoff or get relegated in the end.

Good read , but I don't think that so detailed descriptions of international tournaments are needed.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm in two minds on those myself. Some people might be interested, others not so much. I might try to cut them back a bit. If I have them, I do like to cover all continents though.

Keeping in mind the above, there's still a bit to catch up on before my season began.

Those who don't want to know about the outside world, please just go to the next post. This is a mix of end of last season, and what happened elsewhere over July and August. The next post gets back to my game.

Firstly, the big three leagues from last season.

July - August 2013

GazMetanSeverin_logo.png

Gaz Metan Severin

Romanian Second League - Group 2

Season expectations looked quite scary when announced. The board is expecting promotion. I can't see that. I have 11.75k to spend on wages, currently the bill sits at just over 9k. That may help, if the right players can be found - and, more importantly, in the highly unlikely event that I use them well.

The bookies were over-rating us as well, 2-1 and third favourites for promotion.

Rather than bring in back-up goalkeeper, I may have brought in a new first choice one. It will eb atough call which one to play, form and morale no doubt will play a part. Speaking of morale, I wouldn't be surprised if one of them wants out by teh mid-season transfer window if they aren't getting game time.

A 35k offer for striker Stroe came our way after the first friendly. This was a tough call. He was in my plans, potentially partnering Popovici - especially if Vancea successfully transitions to an attacking mid - and sometimes playing in his place. I did bring in a young striker, Corcopa, to play there as well, and to use up an under 21 spot. But he isn't really first choice material, and other under 21s may be.

I ended up rejecting the offer, partly because it was 6k up front and 30k over the next 30 months; but mostly because I'm expecting him to play a fair few games this season and there are no uncontracted replacements to pick up - none my scouts know about anyway.

Financial updates proved to be healthy, as is sarcasm, losing 700k for last season on 450k in revenue. That's a massive hole, 35k wasn't going to make a dent in that.

The friendlies were, as usual, a mix of near our level and a level below.

With players on extended leave, we had quite a few out in the first couple. There's not much to say about them really, a little disappointing first up.

Neacsa suffered a hamstring tear before the last friendly and the cup opener. He will miss 4-5 weeks.

Speaking of the cup, we got a third league side. Under Romanian Cup rules, the lower league team plays at home. With the way the friendlies went I was not confident at all. Every game was a disappointment, given only Lokomotiv were rated above us and only Alro are on the same level.

Gaz Metan Severin v FC Chindia Targoviste - League opener

For the opening match of the season Jovanovic was suspended from last season, Neacsa out with his hamstring and Cosic unavailable due to a calf strin. Pena started onm the bench, having missed many of the friendlies with international duty. He hasn't yet adapted to the club, or the language.

Dolha debutyed in goal, Mare up forward to fill an under 21 spot and Barbu in defence despite an unconvincing friendly series.

We had an early forced substitution on the left wing with Cindea injured. We created a few chances in the first half, but the wrong players tended to be on the end of them. Leading in to the break there were signs the opening could come. I wanted to being Popovici on for Mare early in the second half, but due to requiring two under 21s would have to use both remaining subs so refrained. I did make the change late, with Firoiu making his debut at right back to meet under 21 quota. Deep into stoppage time, as in after 97 minutes, Vancea got injured leaving us down to ten men for surely only seconds. In the 100th minute, seriously, Popovici broke through and broke the deadlock. But the goal was disallowed, and I'm not sure the officials got that offside call right. Twelve shots to three, six to zero on target, zero to zero scored.

Vancea will be out for up to two weeks. Stroe will probably fill that spot.

FC Olimpia 2010 Satue Mare (3rd League) v Gaz Metan Severin (2nd League) - Romanian Cup, 4th Round

Popovici had a unchallenged run down the left, cut inside, and scored after 41 seconds. We almsot added to that in the 35 minute, a corner finding the head of Balau who knocked straight at the keeper. On the stroke of half time, an opposition free kick found a clear man who knocked it into the right hand upright and was deemed offside anyway.

Popovici took longer in the second half than the first but when played in, weaved around one defender and coolly slotted home our second. With just over 15 to play I brought Pena and Firoiu on for some game time. At 2-0 it was a bit of a risk, but not much. Popovici completing his hattrick immediately afterwards removed that risk.

As you may have noted, I have a lot of hope in Randall Pena. He is far from the finished article at this point though. Hopefully as he settles in to Romania he will blossom.

In my experience, someone will probably snatch him for a decent amount of money before long. In those sorts of leagues I'm used to being able to get good young Africans and having them sold over my head at a great profit. Really good for finances if you keep having a few of them on the go at a time.

Really good for finances if you keep having a few of them on the go at a time.

That is part of the reason for signing him, and a couple of the others, for so long. They will either develop into useful players for us, and Pena already is often a starter, or get sold and the club's deep financial problems relieved. Over £800k debt and mounting at a rapid rate.

A nice read, BadMan. And I always find it to be interesting how the rest of the world competitions pan out. Hope you keep those going if they remain of interest.

I plan on keeping them, but perhaps cutting back on the detail levels a bit. I haven't really decided on how. Maybe I'll start from semi-finals, rather than every knockout round, in most competitions. Or just cut some of the details level out of the earlier phases. Certainly, if I spot something a bit unusual I will point it out.

The World Cup will be a full thing, and European comps maybe start in the quarters, as I think they are where most people will have more interest.

To both of you, thanks for reading, and for the feedback.

September 2013

Gaz Metan Severin

Romanian Second League - Group 2

FCM UTA 1945 Arad (12th) v Gaz Metan Severin (10th)

Popovici twice chipped the goalkeeper in the opening 20 minutes when the goalie ran out to meet the ball. One hit the cross bar, one went a little higher. He then got injured, bringing on an inexperienced Mare. A poor pass from the right saw UTA take possession and hoof a blind ball forward, Iordache ran onto it behind our defence and scored. 1-0 down after 27. Substitute Mare came off injured on the 30 minute mark. And by half time, all three substitutions had been made due to injuries with Mirescu forced from the field. On the death knell UTA took a free kick, which found Iordache to volley home.

I have no idea what's wrong tactically, but this should be afar better theam than it is. Time to go job hunting again soon, as I'm not going to last much longer here.

Then the injury reports:

Popovici : 3-4 months

Mare: 1-2 months

Mirescu: 4-5 weeks

Cup draw, and we play a side in the other group. We got FCM Dunarea Galati at home. They are a side I have a poor record against from my old club.

Gaz Metan Severin (12th) v CS Mioveni (1st)

Vancea returned to the starting eleven for this game. A fantastic start with Rioseanu heading home a Barbu corner after only three minutes. Some fantastic vision from right back Olah as he took the ball to the box, one-two with Stroe and from there feeding a ball to Balace who made no mistake. We did have a couple of scares at the back but took that lead to the break. Just after resumption, a Balau corner found Barbu running toward the near post and he headed home. That was almost immediately nullified, as Nastasie from close range brought the visitors back to 3-1. Bossman took a heavy knock and I replaced him, along with a very tired Cindea on the left wing. Not much else happened and we held on for 3-1.

Another injury, Iosofache out for 2-3 weeks. A bit of cover lost on left and right sides, but not a major blow.

CSU Vonita Sibiu (12th) v Gaz Metan Severin (8th)

Don't be fooled by their early last place, the media predicted them foir first after being relegated from the top flight last season. There is a bit of a fixture jam in September as well, its not a good time to have injuries. Bossman gets benched, having not fully recovered, and so I play the flat 4-4-2.

In the opening five minutes, Barbelescu put a free kick marginally high and wide, and Barbu hit the crossbar (shock) with a header which came from a corner. Awarded a 9th minute penaly, Cosic took the kick and it was blocked. We're zero from two for penalties in my time at this club. After that Vointa Sibiu started to play their way into the game, while not looking especially dangerous. We pressed again late in the half, and two quick passes across the opposition goal following a throw was rewarded with a Rioseanu goal. We missed some ugly tackles, that would have resulted in cards if they connected, and with defenders out of position Rusu found an unmarked Ocampo for an equaliser. And we fell behind almost straight after courtesy of a powerful shot from just outside the area. Only twice have they looked dangerous, for two goals. We countered, with Barbalescu getting on the end of a mistimed clearance and placing one home also from just outside the area, though not as fiercely struck. Anmd then we threw it all away again with a needless penalty, Balace the infringer. We were the better side for most of the game, but in the periods we weren't it was quite poor and deserved the loss in the end.

Gaz Metan Severin (Liga II Group 2, 9th) v FCM Dunarea Galati (Liga II, Group 1, 11th) - Romanian Cup, 5th Round

With fixture congestion an issue the side that started wasn't the best eleven available. That combined with injuries saw Coropca make a start, which wasn't really in the plans. It was on the scorecard 5 minutes later, a Stroe through ball neatly put away. Calamity at the back ten minutes as Balau was nudged off a loose ball, Dolha came out to meet it but was pipped to the post by Galati's Ciubotaru who neatly chipped the prostrate keeper. Ciubotaru again not long later, bit of a scramble ended on his right foot with an open goal. While these sound like defensive lapses, and are, its really the lack of any sort of midfield which is costing. The ball spends so much time in the back third.

I made three subs on the 70 minute mark remove some very tired players. The orders were made a bit more attacking at the same time. All to no avail. Until the 89th minute. With Stroe having mode to the poacher's role when Vancea came on, his head was on the end of a cross by Firoiu. Right near the death we brought it back to 2-2.

Tired legs would start extra time, with no subs in the bank. Opposition players looked slightly less tired, would that be the determining factor? Five minutes into extra time Vancea snuck up on an opposing defender, dispossessed him, then with only the goalkeeper to beat couldn't find the target. Galati put together a good string of passes before getting a run down the wing. We just magaed to get enough cover to pressure the shot taker and he put it wide. Half of extra time down with no extra score. 114 gone when Stroe put one just a touch high and wide. Around now I thought it might be time to check on my penalty takers. A minute later that looked like wasted time, Stroe feeding Vancea who shot truly from the edge of the area. And that was the way it stayed, Stroe getting man of the match honours and the board's cup target was met - even if the league is looking a diaster early on.

The transfer deadline passed between matches, but as I am only looking at uncontracted players to fill a hole that isn't a big concern.

Gaz Metan Severin (9th) v FC Olt Slatina (8th)

Pena got his first start for the season, having returned from world cup qualifiers. Rioseanu picked up an injury in the opening minutes causing an early sub use. And it was the early sub, Cindea, who opened the scoring. While most players can't hit the target from dead in front, Cindea cut in from abot ten yards from the end line, and then blasted one from a tight angle. That was probably the only real action from the opening half, a few half chances both ways but not many and not good. Super-sub, a brace for Cindea early in the second, again from the angle but this time closer in and with more to aim at.

After the game came the news Rioseanu would miss 4-5 months.

The 6th round cup draw came out, with the top flight teams taking part. We drew 14th placed Astra Ploiseti, a tough game but not impossible.

CS Alro Slatina (5th) v Gaz Metan Severin (8th)

Our third midweek game in a row, and its really taking a toll on selection options. In another half of little action, it was around half way through it that a string of three centring passes from the right wing were made , and it was Stroe who had the full face. The shot was good, the lead was one. We opened the second half strongly, without quite finding the opening. After Stroe missed a tap in from just a couple of yards out, Cindea found himself on a stretcher with half an hour to play. And it was cross bar again after that, one of Alro strikers nearly puncturing the ball with the force of the kick. A solid run from Vancea, crossed in and found Neacsa's head but it was straight to the goalkeeper. With time running out, Alro's Grosu seemed to have found a way through but we got back to cover conceding only a corner which they proceeded to waste. We could have had a second in stoppage time, but three points are the main thing.

Condea will miss two months, as the media mention my eight free transfer players.

Gaz Metan Severin (5th) v CS Muresel Deva (4th)

We spent the first three minutes knocking the ball around in our own half. The patience meant we didn't need to be patient long, when we did break the half way line it resulted in a series of slow passes and a Stroe goal. Well, that went to pot quickly. And almost immediate reply, much the same as our goal except without the long build up. 68% possession for the half, but we're struggling to get through their flat five midfield.

Some deft work in defence by Olah saw an opening down the pitch, we countered up the middle and Vanmcea got the lead back for us with just under 20 to play. Stroe had made the vital run. He almsot scored again himself not long after, but struck the woodwork when a goal beckoned. The rebound shot went well wide. In the end we got the win, but not entirely convincingly so despite having all of the ball.

Gaz Metan Severin (Liga II, Group 2, 2nd) v Astra Ploiesti (Liga 1, 17th) - Romanian Cup, 6th Round

Another mid-week game, and playing host to one of the weaker teams in the top flight there was some speculation we could push them. I was hoping so, even a respectable loss would be OK but advancing to the next round would be very nice. They play a very attacking formation, two strikers backed by three AMs. We conceded early, with a pass across the defence going astray. It was the sort slight mis-kick that not be costly in our league but clearly is against the next tier up. We almost repaid the complement, Jovanvic cutting off a slightly errant pass and putting Stroe through but the shot was blocked. We started getting into the gam,e in the second half, even leading the shot count but most were ordinary efforts under pressure. In the 82nd minute a cross found substitute Barbalescu, who knocked it down to himself and had space to take his time on the shot. Scores were level. Again, we take a cup tie into extra time. Next week there are no mid-week games, good thing.

Barbalescu again, with a cross that the opposition goalkeeper comes to meet buit doesn't quite. Vancea knocked it home for a lead. Almost stright after the second half of extra time we go a man up, Barbalescu brought down and Barboianu received his second card. A few minutes later and Barbalescu having sidestepped one man had the left wing to himself, his cross found Javanovic running in from the right. He headed truly. 3-1. And that's how it stayed. I'm thrilled with that, coming back against a side in a higher division who were all over us early.

I looked into getting another young Costa Rican international defender, but the wage demands for predominantly a backup player were too high. I would have done it if he was cheap, as much to give Pena another Spanish speaker.

The cup draw for the 7th round sees host Rapid Bucharest, the current cup holders, on 30 October. If nothing else, that should draw a solid crowd.

Luceafural Oradea (11th) v Gaz Metan Severin (2nd)

We've found some form, and with it some luck. But how long would that last. I know how rapidly things can break. Hopefully not against a team in the relegation zone. With players needing a rest, I shouldn't have any issues with under 21 rule - 4 starters qualify, and only Coropca (in for Stroe) is a significant downgrade.

Nothing happened for a half, but we were clearly being outdone in every way. I had to give the players a half time blast. A corner on the 55th minute saw us go behind. We had the guy marked, he just out-judged and out-jumped the defence. That was made worse when Bossman gave away a penalty. We pulled one back in 74th, through Stroe on a solo run. And that was it. I was concerned going in that some wins in some big games might come undone in a low key match, and we just looked flat the whole game. Our away form is quite bad, partly hidden by playing cup games at home.

I came third in the manager of the month for September, but that was some way off first.

A crowded month, which is why I did a monthly update rather than bi-monthly. I basically try to do an update when there is enough to make it worth while.

Fixtures_2013_09.jpg

That last much cost us a little, but its early days and at least we are at the right end of the table for now.

October 2013

GazMetanSeverin_logo.png

Gaz Metan Severin

Romanian Second League - Group

The match summaries have been getting far too long, time to cut back a bit I feel.

Gaz Metan Severin (3rd) v FC Bihor Oredea (7th)

We applied the pressure, but as do often happens, conceded the first time the ball was at our defensive end. The first two times. Stroe pulled one back just before the break. We pressed hard all the second half but there was no further scoring. Another dismal away result, this time we were probably the better team everywhere except the scoreboard.

CSM Ramnicu Valcea (1st) v Gaz Metan Severin (5th)

Away to top of the table, I feared a savage beating coming in to the game. When Barbu couldn't quite a header on a floated free kick and the opponent got behind him for the easy score, those fears started being realised. Surprisingly, we led the shots on target and clear cut chance counts at the break. A Barbu corner, Pena header, and level in the 89th minute. Pena's first goal at the club. They had one long range effort, but 1-1 remained the score.

Corona Brasov (11th) v Gaz Metan Severin (6th)

Due to players needing a rest, 16 year old George Ban was brought up from the under 19s. He's not good enough, but there was no choice. Vancea was also rested, and Pena was on Costa Rican duties. A nothing match for 80 minutes, depsite the game deciding almost every moment was “key” (I play with key highlights). Then, out of nowhere, we conded through two missed tackles on a slow solo run – well, stroll. Stroe immediately replied, back to all level. In the end, we probably stole a point. Its now four games without a win, and six without a clean sheet. On the plus side, we have scored in each of the last eleven games.

FC Chindia Targoviste (10th) v Gaz Metan Severin (7th)

Another game where we make all the running for more than a half, and one slip (not even really a blunder) in defence is costly. And the goal inspired Chindia, who were clearly the better from that point on. To the point where we never had another shot, or even had the ball forward for the next 40 minutes.

Gaz Metan Severin (8th) v FCM UTA 1945 Arad (3rd)

We were getting pummelled, so I set the tactics to a bit more defnsive after about 20 minutes. A huge clearing kick by Dolha in goal went almost the length of the field, Iosofache dispossessed the Arad player, found Stroe, his shot was blocked and rebounded to Vancea to open the scoring. Ten minutes later the ball went straight through Dolha's hands, Arad's striker Atem credited with the goal. With Bossman injured I fad to swap to a flat 4-4-2. The stats confirmed what the highlights suggested, we were not in the game. That was until Vancea knocked the ball out wide to Stroe, who cut inside a man, took the shot and gave us an undeserved lead. A shot goal kick was intercepted and returned into the net, 2-2. That was immediately responded to with Iosofache being harrassed at the corner flag, blindly whipping in a panic cross and Barbulescu's head sending the ball goalward. The lead again with 10 to play. Arad ran the ball end to end after a horrid pass from Stroe, 3-3 after 86. One for the neutral fans perhaps, not one to please either manager.

Bossman will miss 7 weeks to 2 months. A big blow given the already dismal midfield stocks.

A new record. That's normally good right?

Winless_2013_10_20.jpg

At least we get a full week between games before having midweek games each of the next two weeks; including the cup match.

CS Mioveni (4th) v Gaz Metan Severin (9th)

Again the opening goal came early. We had the man marked from the cross, but Iriarte was just too good with the head. Half an hour in, Stroe was on the end of a speculative ball, evaded a sliding tackle, and put the ball past the goalkeeper. The last 15 minutes were torrid, it just seemed to be scrambled clearnace pumped back in for another scrambled clearance. A score, or five, looked inevitable. Yet, somehow, it never came.

Gaz Metan Severin (Liga II, Group 2, 9th) v FC Rapid Bucharest (Liga I, 5th)

If nothing else, this promised to bring a decent crowd along. This was always a game where we had to make chances count, deny them the ball as much possible, and harrass hard when they had it. And, then just hope and for the religious types, pray. And we seemed to be doing that, they hads all the running but at least we weren't making it easy. Not until a Gomez shot defelcted off Cosic for an own goal anyway. And that was followed immedaitely after by a curling strike by Lukacs. All of a sudden we had gonme from competitive to staring doen the barrel of himuliation. Humiliation it was, justa minute later Oliviera scored his first ever for Rapid. We replied through Barbulescu, while all hope of a result was long gone at least we scored. Masango made it 4-1, getting one under Dolha's hands that he should have stopped. An ordinary half, albeit against a powerhouse club.

A terrible backpass from Rapid, Stroe beat their goalkeeper to the ball comfortably and then lobbed over his head for the 4-2 goal. Gomez had been one of Rapid's best and with 15 to play got a well deserved goal in a scramble just off the line. Six is humilation territory, Lukacs beat the one man to slide in for the goal from a cross made near the corner.

The crowd wasn't as big as I hoped for either. Although, perhaps I didn't want our fans to see that.

The board isn't happy about the league position, and I don't blame them. Its only having gone a round further in the cup than expectaions, and wages, which are keeping me in a job. League wins are needed very soon, or my second sacking will happen.

Barbulescu's goal against Arad won goal of the month.

It was not a good month.

Fixtures_2013_10.jpg

And that means a big drop on the table. Thankfully, mid-table is always fairly close together in this league so a climb is possible. The board's promotion target might be out of reach though.

Thanks for reading, guys. I'm sure it makes a change from all the managers who have success.

So, on to whatever happened next. More of the same? A complete turn around? Even worse? Stay tuned for, um, immediately below.

November - December 2013

GazMetanSeverin_logo.png

Gaz Metan Severin

Romanian Second League - Group 2

Gaz Metan Severin (9th) v CSU Vointz Cibiu (6th)

In a game where nobody was creating good chances, but they were making more of the bad ones, it took until 72 minutes had elapsed before we fell behind. There was no chance that would be reversed, even against a dismal looking Vointz Cibiu outfit. So, again we gave away aneedless penatly. Pena this time, he goit a red for it as well. If I kept my job, I decided it was time for a team meeting. That may hav been the worst performance at this club.

The team meeting improved morale a little, but I doubt it will make any difference. Big trouble looms.

Gaz Metan Severin (9th) v CS Alro Slatina (6th)

Twice in the opening two minutes we forced their goalkeeper to parry, but the ensuing scramble resulted in blocked shots before a clearance. From that point on the game became one of the dullest sporting events on records, inclusing when the Lower Nowhere C Grade darts team turned up and found found the pub's darts board had been stolen. Something happened in the 76 minute, but it just turned out the food stall in the north end of the ground had run out of hot dogs. Then something happened on the pitch. A Barbu free kick found the head of Balau and we had a lead after 84 minutes. It may have been a game less exciting that a rianed out under 8s tennis tournament, but we got the three points.

With so many tired players, naming an eleven that is not out on its feet before kick-off is now a challenging task. Doing so with a team with any hope of winning, nigh on impossible. At the end of this month there is a break, but as it stands I still had to let two key players go on holiday, Vancea and Barbulescu.

FC Olt Slatina (12th) v Gaz Metan Severin (8th)

Nothing happened for the firest 60 minutes. Then we hit the upright for the second time in as many minutes through Jovanovich, who was rested from the previous match, Coropca got on the rebound and while he failed to control the shot it scored. Cosic gave up another penalty as stoppage time neared, and of course it was scored.

Goslkeepr Dolha will be out for 3-4 weeks, but Stetca is playing there at the moment and that period will largely be the much needed winter break. Its not great, but not a big deal.

CS Muresel Deva (7th) v Gaz Metan Severin (8th)

Wow. We were so bad. I know eight pl;ayers were missing, including six starters, but, yeeech. The only surprise with the openoing goal was how long it took, almost half time before we went one down. And a second came in stoppage time, making the score line closer to the way the match had been played.

If that was my last game at the club, I would not be surprised. Even by my standards, this career has started out very badly.

The two most important available players, Stroe and Barbu, are so out of form the supporters want them dropped. The problems are, everyone else's form is even worse, and there is nobody available anyway.

Morale is very low, but there was a team meeting not that long ago so I didn't want to call another one.

Gaz Metan Severin (9th) v Luceafarul Oredea (10th)

A battle stay out of the relegation zone, I think we will be in at game's end. We got a few plaers back, which allowed me to field a slightly less incompetent looking line-up (in theory). On the pitch, much the same. Vancea was one of the returnees, and being lazy paid off for him as he broke the dealock in stoppage time of the first half. He was wandering around aimlessly not getting invovled when Stroe dispossessed an opponent and found him 30 yeards up the pitch unmarked. Stroe scored himself not long after resumption, Barbulescu with a nest assist – as opposed to the wild shot he'd tried in the same position a few minutes earlier. Barbulescu finished proceeding courtesy of a free kick from just outside the area.

And then, I clicked the wrong team talk post-game angering the side. Ah, well.

Popovici is back in full training. When and whether he gets run is uncertain. He seems to have lost a little with the injury.

FC Bihor Oredea (5th) v Gaz Metan Severin (8th)

We were unlucky with the break looming, Cosic deflectine the goalie Stetca had covered, into our own net. We clearly had the better of the second half, but it was 94 minutes in before a floated header landed on Jovanovich's head, hit the crossbar, back on to his head and in.

The gap between us and promotion is now unbridgeable. I'm aiming for top half and maybe I'll keep my job.

Gaz Metan Severin (9th) v CSM Ramnicu Valcea (1st)

Ninth v First. It showed. We had one early chance. Popovici had started because Stroe needed a rest, I really wanted to just use hiom off the bench until the rbeak, but never miind. He ran at gaoal and fluffed it. From then on the only time we saw the ball was to kick it off twice after goals. Then mid-way through the second Popovici was on the end of a hacked clearance, used his pace, then held the ball up passing off to Vancea who scored. A lot of luck, and that only brought it back to 2-1. A short time later Vancea was clearly offside, but the call wasn't made, he knocked it back to Jovanovich, onto Popovici, and 2-2. 3-2 dopwn again Aafter Stoica managed a one-touch from an imposible angle. That goal was BS, but we deserved the loss.

We're conceding far too often, but it would be unfair to blame the defence. They are genrally doing a decent job, but the ball is down way too ften for them to deal with. We lack a midfield at all, and certainly anyone there who can apply some pressure. Maybe Bossman coming back and fillimg the DM gap will help. Maybe, but I think its deeper than that.

Gaz Metan Severin (9th) v Corona 2010 Brasov (12th)

Athome to last on the table, one would hope we could get a win and take some confidence into the winter break. It took 20 minutes for either team to get a shot away. It went in, we went 1-0 down. Every entry cam,e from having been forced wide, a cross, and beaten on the header. By late in the game we were on top in every way except actually scoring. That never looked likely. And we didn't score. Thankfully one of their defenders scored for us in the 93rd minute.

Fixtures_2013_11.jpg

And that is the winter break. Two-thirds of the way through the season we're staring down the barrel of relegation, rather than the promotion the board wanted. I don't see a way to tuen things around. Morale is shot, players are uninterested, and we just can't get a win from anywhere. We almost have a full squad now, but the best players are in bad form so even that doesn't help.

And my scouts can't find an uncontracted player anywhere, a central midfielder – even a bad one – would be nice.

The league gets split at this point, meaning we have officially failed to promote. We have not yet failed to relegate though, so that something to look forward to.

Table_2014_01_01.jpg

Just for a laugh, I brought in a corrupt multi-billionaire Prime Minister on trial. Then I saw his actual abilities, and seriously considered signing him. Not bad for this level, and not bad for 19.

Gaz Metan Severin

Romanian Second League - Group 2

With the winter break in full swing, there are not many matches to report on for this update.

News from the physio that Barbulescu will miss 3-4 months came through in mid-January. He should be back for the final few games. At a guess he will be available for from 3-6 matches of the 10 that remain.

A few days later Iosofache also suffered a stress fracture in the back, and was sidelined for 2-3 months. I guess he won't be sold in the mid-season transfer window.

Defenders Balau and Balace have both announced they will retire at season's end. Both are replaceable, so I am not asking them to reconsider. And around this time the transfer window opened. I was not expecting us to do a lot, with no money and no free agents around the squad had to stay pretty much as it was.

More of a concern is that Petar Jovanovic turned down a new contract and will join FK Rudar Prijador in Bosnia-Herzegovina at the end of the season.

The friendlies then began, in preparation for the final games and staying above the drop.

I wouldn't read muych into those friendly results. Most teams were below us in ratings, and we really should have won the middle two games by a lot more. We were still diabolical up forward, and leaky down back. I did trial a 3-4-3 formation but it didn't really have the desired result. To be honest, I didn't expect it to but Vancea wasn't making progress in becoming an attacking midfielder so I thought I would start training something different as our third option.

Gaz Metan Severin

Romanian Second League - Group 2 - Relegation group

Before the first match of this update goal.com was reportiong my job as being on the line.

Luceafarul Oradea (10th) v Gaz Metan Severin (9th)

It was an odd first half, with them having the possession and moving the ball better in the front third, but us getting more and better chances. The opener was equally bizarre. A long ball forward saw one of their defenders nack on to. Popovici dispossessed him with a sliding tackle. The ball went to their goalkeeper who bent down, failed to pick it up, and stood there while Popovici got up off the deck at tapped it in. An equaliser came mid-way through the sewcond half, with a long throw followed by a lobbed cross which was headed in just over an outstretched Dolha. From the kick off we got the ball to Stroe who went one on one with the goalkpper and regain thed lead. And again an immeditae reply, another high cross headed in for the 2-2. And that was how it stayed. Did I keep my job for one more game?

Adrian Olah took a knock early in that matchg, and was to miss 4-5 weeks. Jovanovich reached the yellow card limit, and was banned from the next game.

I still had a job for now.

Gaz Metan Severin (9th) v FC Olt Slatina (11th)

Avram. I remember that guy. He's cut us up before, did it again with a superb strike from long range. Aside from that one moment, we were dominant for 60 minutes. But creating good chances only means something if you take some. Eventually we took one, and not one of the cleanest ones. Stroe with the equaliser, could anyone get a winner? Popovici came close, from the edge of the area the goalkeeper just got to it, funbled, but a defender cleared before we could mop up. Another draw where we we by far the better side.

FC Chindia Tragoviste (8th) v Gaz Metan Severin (9th)

In the opening ten minutes, with the goalkeeper beaten, both Popovici and Stroe struck the upright rather than the open goal. Still in the first te, when Popovici does score it was from an offside position. Three clear cut chances in the first half for no score, Chindia only had two shots. Howver, the second half began with us under siege. Very late in the game Stroe missed another from short range, at least this time the goalkeeper was still on his feet and he had to take the shot quickly. Due to other results we dropped into the relegation zone. That might be enough to finish my career at this club.

Goalkeeper Dolha came to me and expressed dissatisfaction in my management. This isn't good.

Vancea came and said the same thing a couple of day later. Perhaps it is time to resign. He went public with his thoughts as well, the next day.

Gaz Metan Severin (10th) v FCM UTA 1945 Arad (7th)

UTA started on top, but we got the first score. Popovici dispossessed a defender in the box, saweoff a tackler and the keeper could only geta hand on it without stopping it. The start of something, or the immediate equaliser was the next question. Four minutes later, Popovici was on a run up the middle, Stroe's pass found him and 2-0 up. They pegged one back in the 36th, again the floated crioss was out undoing. In stoppage time Stroe too the ball up the middle, knocked right to Jovanovic, who re-centred, Stroe's header hit the crossbar but rebounded to his feet for 3-1.

Ten minutes after resumption, Popovici weas well offside when he got the ball from Cindea. He centred to Stroe, and 4-1. The flag stayed down. Free kick, Atem slides in and goals. 4-2. Unfortunately, Luceafarul also got a win so we stayed in the drop zone.

Corona 2010 Brasov (11th) v Gaz Metan Severin (10th)

A very dull game indeed. Both sides made just one real chance each. Our best coming from a corner, where Pena's header hit the crossbar. I really need wins, not more draws.

That left us four points inside the relegation zone, with five games to play. Its just about all over.

Gaz Metan Severin (10th) v Luceafraul Oredea (9th)

A failure to win this one one would just about snuff out all hope. I thought we had an early opener, but Popovici was ruled offside, correctly as it turned out. At the same time Jovanovic was down for the count. He probably should have been awarded a penalty. Five minutes later an opposing striker weaved through two defenders in the area, and put it into the upright. An epic run from Popovici on the left saw us pass across the edge of the area right, then left, until Bossman saw the opportunity to shoot. And he scored. Returning from injury Barbulescu was credited with the assist. It was 1-1 after 34, a strong run and well timed cross saw our defence completely outpositioned. The second half was more sedate, we had a few half-chances but nothing changed and that looks like season over.

Our last seven games have produced one win and six draws. That, right there, is the story of the season.

FC Olt Slatina (12th) v Gaz Metan Severin (10th)

Not many turned up on a wet day to watch the wooden-spooners take on the also-near-confirmed-relegated. The skills on display matched the positions on ther table, really poor game. And when we fell behind late in the first half, it was through no brilliance on the behalf of our opponents. I gave the players an old fashioned blast at half time, but it didn't seem to have any immediate effect after the break. With about half an hour to play I switched to the 3-4-3. Conceding another one meant it was al over, but so did not scoring. It almost worked pon the 70 minute mark when Stroe forced a fantastic reflex save, and again on 80 minutes when a Vancea shot was parried to Stroe but he was nudged off the kick. But it didn't work, 1-0 loss.

Luceafarul also lost, so it is stilla four point gap. But with just three to play time is running out to get those elusive wins.

Another set of draws capped off by a loss

Fixtures_2014_0304.jpg

And the table is looking ominous.

Table_2014_0501.jpg

I don't hold out any hope at all now, but will see if I last the season. Obviously I weill be sacked after the last game, at the latest, as this no lower playable league.

Gaz Metan Severin

Romanian Second League - Group 2 - Relegation group

CM UTA 1945 Arad (7th) v Gaz Metan Severin (10th)

Utterly swamped. The opening goal came courtesy of a ball lobbed over Dlha's head when he had come off the line. Barbu got back and laid head on ball on the line, but it just skimmed him and it was considered own goal. Completely out of the game and waiting for the second, Barbu took a free kick near the corner flag. He found Pena's left foot, and we levelled from about 2 metres out with 35 to play.

Not long after that we were down again, courtest of an offside goal from very close range.

I got very angry at the players in what would surely be my last address at the club.

Luceafarul Oredea had a win, leaving us seven points from safetey with two games to play. You do the maths.

As expected that sealed my fate. A lot of players are now looking to move on from the club. I am looking for a new job. This was extraordinarily disappointing because I still think the squad should have been able to push among the leaders, although gaining promotion was probably too much.

Gaz Metan Severin went on to win their final two games without me, with some absolute hacks getting them over the line.

I applied for a few jobs, but was getting laughed at by amateur clubs in the Belgian third division, and by clubs in the Conference North in England.

Around the world other things happened.

The Oceania Champions Leagues wrapped up in early May

I may stop reporting on this, as there no playable leagues and the same teams every year.

And then the European Champions League (I am cutting back to report from quarter-finals onwards). Three of the same semi-finalsts as the previous year, but neither of the same finalists. Barcelona and the two Manchester giants might be starting a domination of Europe.

All attention now will turn to the 2014 World Cup.

Interesting qualifiers include New Zealand, Ireland, Wales, Egypt and Canada. USA had to qualify through a playoff with Peru.

Randall Pena's Costa Rica qualified, but obviously he is no longer my player.

July - December 2014

As you can see from the date range, I didn't get ajob all that quickly. And as the new year rolls around I still don't have one.

The only times there has looked like a chance has been in the South African second tier.

So, its six months of a worldwide wrap. Starting with the biggest tournament of them all, the 2014 World Cup

I'm not sure how much longer I'll continue if a job doesn't come up.

Keep going, and have faith; A job will surface! In my career, I failed miserably and then trudged through two banal seasons before finding a little success.

Also, quite an interesting WC. Morocco making it through the groups, and Nigeria in the final.

Good luck, mate!

At this stage I'm thinking if there is no job by the end of the 2015/16 season, I'll create a new manager and continue with the save that way.

January - June 2015

Another six months with no job. Again in the South African lower tier a club was flattered by my interest only to choose somebody else.

Ah, well, so its just updates from around the world then.

For internationals, African Cup of Nations finished in April and North America's Gold Cup in June.

Costa Rica's 21 year old captain, Randall Pena, was their goal scorer in the final.

In Europe, Barcelona and the two Manchester sides should just be placed into the semi-finals, and everyone else play for the other spot.

In North America it is proving very difficult for teams other than from Mexico or the MLS to even make quarter finals.

There was one who made it from Honduras in 2014.

CF Bohoril Beius

Romanian Second League - Group 2

I was offered the job at newly promoted CF Bohoril Beius, tipped by the media to finish last.

The club had no staff, and balrely eleven players in the first team squad. There were a few more in the second team and an under 19s to raid if necessary. On arrival it could not field a team in the league, as there are not two under 21 players in the first team squad. Looking at the under 19s there isn't much there.

The first thing to do, therefore, was hire a scout or two (I don't use the player search function for finding players to sign), an assistant and some coaches. But the coaches were a relatively low order priority. I did come in with a transfer budget and some sdalary space to play with, so that was a positive. At 21k it was easily the biggest transfer budget I've seen.

There are far too many internationals to be a good thing under the rules of this league. So, some may have to go. Unfortunately they are the only players up to standard.

At just 30p (I have the currency set to pounds) a ticket, whether or not anybody turns up this club will bleed money profusely. That seems to be thew way at this level, my other clubs were both 50p a ticket.

Board expectations are to avoid relegation, and reach the 4th Round of the Cup. That second one looked easy, until I saw that we join in the first round.

And just a few days after I join, before any staff have arrived or any signings, the cup begins.

FC Otelul Galata (2nd team) v CF Bohoril Beius (Liga II, Group 2) – Romanian Cup First Round

We started stronger, as you would hope against a second team with five starting ring-ins (greyed out players). But we couldn't convert that into a score. That changed in the opening minutes of the second half, as Garcia put us one up. Ninety seconds later and an own goal made it 2-0. Changing to a more attaching philosophy at half time seemed to be paying off. After two more minutes it was 3-0, capping off our best move to that time. The scoring stopped at that point, but with the club where it is I was happy to just to win. We were pushed hard in thje final ten minutes, but the only really chance was saved well enough.

Friendlies had been arranged before I arrived, two had been played. The remaining two were against a Serbian second tier and Serbian top tier team. My expectation was that these games would prove much tougher than the cup match had. In the end that wasn't the case, and even in the second game we were a bit more competitive than the scoreline suggested.

CS Autocatania Caransebes (Liga III, Group 5) v CF Bohoril Beius (Liga II, Group 2) – Romanian Cup Second Round

We started as underdgos againt a team a level below us. That shows where this squad sits at the start of the season. New club., old problems. Due to the players in the squad lacking defenders, I've been playing a 3-5-2. Its not what I want to play when we get new players in, but for now it wil haave to do.

A floated cross saw us out-headed in defence and go down 1-0 after 25. But then Garcia got away with flattening an opponent and scoring from close range to level. The ;lack of defence hurt again, with all the derfenders crowding the ball, it opened up a simple pass for an open goal to see us fall behind again. We had a couple of chanes to level just before the half, the best being Garcia getting on to a rcochet off the upright, and spraying well wide from well within the six yard box and having the whole goal to aim at.

Muscalu is looking to be one of our more important players early. Most attacks involve him in some way. He pulled the ball back for Dialio to control and find Garcia, who this time found the target to draw us level. On the 84 minute mark we conceded again, some sloppy marking allowing a tough shot to be made a touch easier but stillr equiring a quality finish. At the time Garcia was on the sidelines receiving treatment. The knock looked bad and he was scheduled to be subbed off. Before he was though, Bardin made and end to end run for 3-3. Cretu, who came on for Garcia, got on the end of a long kick from the goalkeeper to be one on one, and push the ball wide in stoppage time.

Extra time began with us under seige. Not many shots came, but when they did they were well worked and had us scrambling. Eventually wer cleared and almost struck on the counter. A lot of our players looked slow, and very tired. But half way through extra time, only four shots to two had been added for no score.

Nothing in the next 15 minutes, and it went to the shoot out.

First up, Dialio - cross bar, no score. Varlan saves, 0-0 after 1 each.

Bardin slots it. As does Timbota. 1-1 after 2.

Buia next for us, but its hit poorly and saved. Cucu scores. Down 1-2 after 3.

Puchiu must score. And does. Fara sprays, and 2-2 after 4.

Muscalu beats the diving goalie. Suru had been one of their best all game, but sprayed the vital spot kick. 3-2 and through to the third round. If we reach the fourth round, I may throw the game. Financially, the cup is just not worth being in unless you win it.

Rapid CFR Suceava (Liga III, Group 1) v CF Bohoril Beius (Liga II, Group 2) – Romanian Cup Third Round

Again, we start rank underdgos against a team a level below us.

The ball spent most of its time at the right end of the pitch early, but we never looked like pressing home any sort of advantage. Defender Buican then got injured, fircing me toi bring on a player promoted from the under 19s, who should not even get a game there. We are so light on for derfenders. That seemd to eb the catalyst for Suceava to get themselves going, and we spent the rest of the opening half on the back foot. A series of headers on and offf the goal line finished with us coneding three minutes into stoppage time.

Some hope was restored ten minutes into the second when we got a free against the run of play. Garcia stepped up and from the edge of the area beat the goalkeeper and found the top left corner of the opening. After we missed a golden opportunity to snare the lead, we agaions concede late. A cross across the face of goal, which our goalkeeper failed to react to, was easily tapped in from half a metre out. We barely had time to react before the final whistle went.

After the game came the news that Dora Buican will miss up to two months. He's hardly a star defender, but as good as we've got so it will hurt. Particularly with the scouts finding basically nobody that we can sign.

Muscalu got injured in training, and will miss 2-3 months. The season is not looking like it will start well.

This is not a well supported club. 51 season tickets had been sold ao the 16th of August. Up from 10 last year.

CF Bohoril Beius (media tip 12th) v CS Muresel Deva (media tip 11th)

Theopening league match rolls around and I am nowhere near prepared. It was a struggle to come up with an eleven that met the under 21 and EU player requirements. From the kick off we were clearly outclassed. When the opening goal came from a blistering strike the manner of the goal was a surprise, but not that it came. The second came shortly befaore half time, corner, unmarked man with the header, near sode goal. Simple as a training drill.

At half time I changed to a more attacking phiosophy, on theory that we might as well down 6-2 as 4-0. We actually started to look better, having a few half chances and seeing the ball deep in the opposition's half regularly. We got some reqrd on the 70th minute through a Garcia free kick. I rarely have players capable of scoring from free kicks, he might be one of those rare ones. Any hope of scrounging a point appeared lost a couple of minutes later,m but Darvaru was called offside and we had a temporary reprieve. A dubious free kicked to us was lobbed into the area with no purpose. Their goalkeeper got to it, fumbled, and Bardin was at the drop to put it home. 85 minutes in and we were level. Now, not to concede late yet again. We were clearly the better side in the second half, perhaps by so much that we were over the match but I don't quite think so.

FC Arges Pitesti (9th, media tip 6th) v CF Bohoril Beius (6th, media tip 12th)

We weren't given much chance heading into the match. I feel we had strengthened the team a little, not picking up any stars but improving a few positions ever so slightly. But I know we are a long way behind what we need to be competitive. The first half saw us under a lot of pressure. We only look dangerous when we get a long ball to Garcia or Bardin, there just isn't the quality to play the ball forward. Defensively we often look lost, perhaps its a case of the team needing time to gel. Anyway, despiote the pressure there had been no score at the half. Posteuca was forced into a series of saves early in the second half, as the ball kept getting pumped into our area. When Garcia got a bad knock after 65 minutes I was not the happiest person on the planet. We got hurt baldy by a bad pass and a superb counter, with what looked to be the winning header by Mensah coming before our defence could even turn and get back. Any doubt over the result soon disappeared when a free kick found Mensah's head. Posteuca parried, but that resulted in a simple knock in. We held for a long time, but a 2-0 loss was probably reflective of play.

The first couple of friendlies were played before my arrival

Table_2015_09_01.jpg

Many of the transfers, in and and out, were also before I arrived.

TransferHist_2015_09_01.jpg

I still need to build this squad, but it will probably be slow going. Not many good players are coming up, which means I need to improve at the margins. That also means offloading some deadwood, as they no longer are main backup options, whenever possible. Wages aren't a worry yet, but I would like to keep it that way.

Around the world, the focus is on Asia and South America.

CF Bohiril Beius

Romanian Second League - Group 2

CF Bohoril Beius (10th, media tip 12th) v Clubul Sportiv Municipal Studentsec Iasi (6th, media tip 1st)

Despite being at home, we weren't expected to be in the hunt for precious points in this game. Yet somehow, after 22 minutes, we had the lead. A corner finding Pocuca unmarked and headed home with the goalkeeper nowhere to be seen. That was undone by horrible play. Nisotriu's unnecessary backpass was not only not needed, but badly directed. It forced Posteuca to go a long way sideways, almost out of the area, and all he could do was head it to one of three IASI players to run in uncontested. Bad backpass, and really it should have been held by Posteuca as well. Just horrible play all round. And that was half time.

The second half began with debutant Jelen taking on free kick duties (not be design, I didn't set anything). It worked. 2-1 up, however Diallo was injured and had to come off. And it was elvel again immediately, we didn't touch the ball from kick off to goal. That was followed by them not touching the ball from kick off to goal, as Bardin finished off the move for 3-2. Bardin shoudl have m,ade it 4-2 after he passed wide to Garcia who ran up the left, and centred back to Bardin perfectly, but the simple shot went wide. A Garcia free kick almost made it 4-2, and then after Vanca intercepted substitute Puchiu scored only to be ruled offside. Pocuca was sent off in the 91st minutes, brining down a man just outside the penalty area and being the last defender. The resulting free kick was on target, but held. We missed a few chances, but held on for the 3-2 win.

After the match it was confirmed that Diallo would miss four weeks. That could really hurt, and takes the gloss of getting three unexpected points.

CS Alro Slatina (2nd, media tip 3rd) v CF Bohoril Beius (7th, media tip 12th)

Three changes, with Pocuca suspended, Jelen on international duty and of course Diallo's injury. It forced a change in formation, and some seriously ill-equipped players to come into the side. 19 year old Ivan Bucar became one of only three defenders. Ionit Chirila on the right wing, and Clement Aboagye made up a hat-trick of poor replacements. Aboagye not a complete horror show.

And so we took to the field with spirits high and hopes low.

We actually started pretty well, creating a few chances and not getting burned in the back too often. We even led the clear cut chances count 3-0. The game seemed to be turning in a more predictable path on the half hour mark as Alro started to have some attempts on our goal, often from set pieces. But it was a cross in open play, after clearing a corner, that was our undoing. And then an uncontested run up the middle followed by horrendous goalkeeping also proved our undoing. After perhaps being better for 30 minutes, we were down by two after 40, and that was the score at the break.

After the break it looked being party time for Alro. Surely it was just a matter of time before the scoreboard attendants were suing for over-work. Aboagye got injured, making things look a little worse. Not that he is any major loss.

As it turned out, his replacement pulled one back for us after a bit of a scramble. Buia then got injured, necessitating two more changes. Having to play Morar is the worst moment in Football Manager ever. It took until the 90th minute for another score to come, Stoianof finishing off a good Alro move. In the end, 3-1 is far better than I feared.

Gaz Metan Severin (10th, media tip 10th) v CF Bohoril Beius (7th, media tip 12th)

My last debacle versus my current debacle, with both tipped by the media to drop. What could be on the line here? We debuted recent signing, 20 year Czech, Jirir Bednar on the right wing for this game. The return to the old stomped-on ground started in familiar fashion, with Severin going behind in the opening minutes. These days, that is a good thing. Bardin's run up the left was capped off with a cross to Cretu who headed home. For the next 15 minutes or more, Deaconescu caused problems in our defence. And Stroe scared me once as well. When Stroe fed Deaconescu for a run up the guts and an easy slot, it came as no surprise. 1-1 nearin half an hour played. We re-took the lead after Bardin's wayward pass deflected off a defender and Cretu had two.

The second hand a spectacular equaliser ten minutes into it. Olah's cross from the right met the diving head of substitute Guiterrez. Olah and Barbulescu were the two I was most concerned about pre-game. A centring ball from Vanca after a throw found an unmarked Bednar. He fired a shot that hit the right upright, and deflected in. 3-2 up, half an hour to play. Fans getting their 50 pence worth. Five minutes later a wild hack deflected to Garcia, who knocked it towards Bardin, his short pass was slid on to by Cretu. The slide was enough to knock home for his hat-trick. All Bardin assists. Severin pulled one back with Neacsa's corner met by the head of Vancea. 4-3, 74 minutes in. Not lon g after, another coprner, another header, and it was level again at 4-4. Adrian Popovici (the young one who didn't get game time when I was there) was sent off in the 90th minute for a professional foul in bringing down Cretu on a run. In the few minutes that remained not much happened. At 4-2 we should have won, and the three points are desperately needed, but a draw away isn't bad for this team.

CF Bohoril Beius (9th, media tip 12th) v Luceafarul Oradea (6th, media tip 9th)

Under siege early in the rain at home, and conceding was inevitable. It only took 11 minutes. Three minutes later a counter resulted in a speculative effort from Bardin on the left sideline. It was slapped away by the goalkeeper to Cretu, who tapped it back to Bardin running in chasing the shot. He passed across the goal for Bednar to tap in on the unguarded side. 26 minutes in a cynical hack at the ankles by Nistoroiu saw us rightfully go a man down. And for the rest of the game, nothing more happened. We had less chances, but Bardin wasted the best of the match. Another draw. Old habits, we really need to turn something into a win.

FC Bihor Oradea (12th) v CF Bohoril Beius (9th)

Two goals in three minutes by Butuc pretty much had us sunk before the 20 miniute. The first was horrible from us, the second there was just no stopping. Butuc had his hat-trick handed to him before half time, courtesy of a Jelen penalty.

After the break we puled one back. The same story, bardin crossed it in, Cretu got the headed goal. Noit long after, Butuc had four, with his own header going in. For somwething differenmt, ten minutes from the Taban scored his first ever goal to put us 5-1 down. Cretu got his second juat a minute later. And that was the ball game, a calamitous 5-2 drubbing.

Making matters worse, other results went against us and we dropped into the relegation zone.

The sole striker seems to be working, but having more in the midfield is not helping us keep the ball away from the danger area. There really is nothing that can be done about that defence. It is pure trash and there are no players available.

Word came through from the FA that Nistoriou's ban would last another two matches. He was only playing in Buican's absence anyway, and Buican resumed full training.

FCM UTA Arad 1945 (5th) v CF Bohoril Beius (11th)

Everyone was expectcing a belting, and not in our favour. Those predictions looked on the money, we got played off the park early. And it stayed that way. Amazingly, despite 8 shots to 1, it was scoreless in the opening half.

Early in the second a curling free kick found Bucar, who hammered it in to the upright and got injured trying to chase down the rebound. In the 79th only a very good save from Posteuca (who has been having a run of occasionally forgetting he is supposed to try to stop the ball) kept it at 0-0. And it syared scoreless. We arguably had the better second half, but the point is still a stolen one.

We scored goals in five of the six matches, but conceded in five as well. One win, three draws, two losses is not that bad for a team as lacking in ability, but clearly it is not going to be safe.

With the Bardin-Cretu combination, Garcia hasn't really been involved in anything important. He's had plenty of the ball, but not in scoring or setting up. He is the missing piece up forward. Skill and ability are missing pieces down back.

Morale is also starting to take hit, which generally means game over. I'm not yet holding a team meeting, but if a win doesn't come soon I will need to.

CF Bohiril Beius

Romanian Second League - Group 2

CF Bohoril Beius (10th) v CS Mioveni (9th)

I thought we had a decent chance coming into this game. The bookies didn't agree, but meh. A minor change to garcia's instructions saw him get invovled in early forward moves. Nothing came of them, but it was good to see him in the highlights. We had less shots, but as much play in the opening half. A little more than half an hour in Garcia was brough down. Bardin took the free kick, which Pocuca headed in.

Midway through the second half a Mioveni cross was drilled in, straight at defender Bucar. All he could do was get an accidental back heel on it into the goal. 1-1, without a Mioveni player anywhere near where the ball was directed. We replied immediately. Cretu sending the ball long for Bardin to run on to. He crossed it, and found Diallo, who scored from short range. All Bardin's assists were finally rewarded with a goal of his own, heading home Diallo's floated cross for 3-1 in the 80th minute. Craciun was forced off through injury straight after that, thew new right back had looked pretty good by the standards of our defence too. In stoppage time Garcia was brought down just outside the box, and Mioveni went down to ten men. Diallo too the free kick, the goal keeper got a glove to it, but enough of a defelction to stop it going in.

Often a win can help a side move up the table a spot or two when down in the cellar. Not that win, everyone moved around us; up and down; but we stayed glued to 10th. The next game loomed as a huge challenge just to be competitive.

CF Bohoril Beius (10th) v Sageata Navodari (5th)

We went in with just one change. Piron started due to Cracium not fully fit, but likley to come on as a sub at some point.

Three minutes in we had the lead, Cretu getting between two defenders who got in each others way and sending the ball just inside the left upright. Not long after, an equaliser. Eight minutes in and this had all the makings of a high scoring encounter. It actually settled down however. Not into a dour game, but not many chances and those that existed were not particularly challenging for the defences to deal with. That was until a bot of a scramble following a short corner, saw Bucar find a way through a mess of legs and put us one up again minutes from half time.

After the break a long ball found Cretu who passed across goal for Bardin to knock home the 3-1. On 60 minutes Sagatea almost pulled one back, but we managed to put enough pressure on the shot for the goalie keep it out. On 80 minutes they did pull one back, as our defence failed to react to their move - it was hardly the quickest counter in the world. The cross found an unguarded man standing next to the penaly spot, who headed it in. We held off a barrage in the final minutes, 3-2.

Three more important points, temporarily lifting us out of the danger spot; but obviously there is very little seperating mid-table from the drop so we need to keep going.

CSU Vointa Sibiu (5th) v CF Bohoril Beius (6th)

Both sides created chances, and really good ones, but it was Sibiu who finally took one after 25 minutes to put them one up. Wasting chances cost us in the op[ening half, three absolutely should have been scored and a fourth was easier to get than to miss, we it stayed a 1-0 deficit at the break.

Diallo was on a run up the right, cut into the box, and was brought down. He took the spot kick himself. And found the top left to put the game on level terms again, althought the scorers decided to count it as an own goal against the goalkeeper - who ddi well to lay hands on it. Sibiu pressed for a response for the next 15 minutes, trying to regain the lead in what to that point was the only extended period of the game that we appeared outplayed. In the final portion of the game, we were back on equal terms in general play and both sides had half-chances that came to nought.

CS Muresel Deva (4th) v CF Bohoril Beius (7th)

On a wet night, we just didn't seem switched on. The passing was missing by just enough to turn the ball over, the tackles weren't quite managing to dispossess, everything just looked that touch below where the effort and care required. But we escaped an uneventful first half without any major dramas.

Muresel pressed us much harder iun the second half, still without looking dangerous, but making sure we were constantly defending - which we cannot do. They kept pressing, but thankfully their attacks lacked any system or cohesion. Not because the defending was any good, it was just a poor match. We got a stoppage time counter going, and it was finished off by Cretu in one of our rare moves forward.

Three undeserved points. A draw maybe, but to get the win was lucky.

Buia got injured in the game and will miss 5-6 weeks. That should be covered without major problems, but obviously is not ideal.

CF Bohoril Beius (7th) v FC Arges Pitesti (1st)

I brought Muscalu back into the side, to replace a tired Bardin. That didn't work for long, with Muscalu injured and bardin forced onto the pitch inside 15 minutes. We went a goal down on the half hour, perhaps slightly against the run of play. Six minutes later, from probably our least impresibe build-up Cretu managed to just evade the goalkeeper to draw level.

From that point on, both sides had their chances but most were not really threatening. The few times players were in a good position to score, they produced abominations on the attempt. 1-1.

After the game the physo reported that starting left back Doru Buican would miss 5-6 weeks.

Clubul Sportiv Municipal Studentesc Iasi (11th) v CF Bohoril Beius (7th)

On 12 minutes Barro opened the scoring for Iasi, following a free kick lobbed over our defence and bouncing high which he got a head to. Disappoitning way to start the match. We were getting outplayed everywhere, but a long ball from Diallo found Garci, who ran it into the box and scored in a mobe he started. Iasi came close once more before the break.

Diallo got injured, forcing Garcia to play on the unfamiliar right wing. It worked thgouih as his cross found Bardin for the second. Nistoroiu, playing at left back in place of the injured Buicam had to go off throguh injury himself. Prion was brought on, though not familliar with playing on the left side. Despite a couple of scares we held on for the win.

Diallo's injury looks like being a 3-4 week one, which causes problems on the right. Nistoroiu 2-3 weeks.

Adding to the issues with Diallo, Bednar is struggling to come to terms wioth life in Romania, and has been granted an absence. So the obvious replacement on the right is unavailable.

CF Bohoril Beius (6th) v CS Alro Slatina (2nd)

I had to change the line up around slightly to mix the players we had available. That was no excuse for Bucar getting on to the the end of an opposityion cross to nobody and hemmering it in for them. For the next half hour we pressed their goal, but didn't find the breakthrough. By half time that one moment of madness was starting to look costly.

Early in the second we looked to have oput Cretu through, but the shot was blocked. And despite making all the running, we couldn't find one for the match. Very disappointing to not even get a point out of a game we dominated for all but a few minutes here and there.

I came second in Manager of the Month, the Alro boss claiming the award.

And on with the tale of the fail.

November - December 2015

CF Bohiril Beius

Romanian Second League - Group 2

November - December 2015

This could have been a real make or break month. If form stayed good then there was trhe outside chance of being in the top half when the league split, in which case relegation could not happen. If not, three of the bottom six relegate and we would be staring down the barrel.

CF Bohoril Beius (6th) v Gaz Metan Severin (12th)

We don't start favourites often, probably because of a tendency to start the scoring with own goals. Five minutes in, one goal down. Itb was another temn minutes before they registered their first shot. We had the ball forward a lot, but couldn't break through for good chances. Either the final pass was wayward or we just couldn't penetrate. I tried mixing it up with a line up that had more up front, to no avail. Another 1-0 loss, thanks to an own goal.

Luceafarul Oradea (9th) v CF Bohoril Beius (6th)

Another own goal, in the 4th minute. Thankfully it didn't count as Pocuca was fouled. In the 7th minute, again from a corner, Pocuca scored an own goal that did count. Bucar, who scored the first own goal, then got another headed goal from a corner. This time for us. Ten minutes in and 1-1. In the 38th minute, Luceafarul's Cacenau was sent off, he had scpred from an offside position and looked dangerous a couple of time so I was glad to see it. With eleven on ten we worked into the game a little, but were probably still outplayed. But there was no further score.

FC Bihor had a win, meaning we dropped to 7th.

CF Bohoril Beius (7th) v FC Bihor Oradea (6th)

Crunch game. The bookies and media gave us little chance, but I felt we had a good shot if we could get something out of the danger players. All of Cretu, Garcia, Bardin and Diallo took to the field; something that has been quite rare with a starting eleven. After 90 seconds I thought we had the lead, but the whistle had gone for a foul. After 15 minutes we did have the lead, a long clearance finding Cretu who went on a run from the half way line and slotted it past the keeper's left. A second came in the 30th, Bardin's first cross was cleared but it came back to him and his second found Cretu for a simple close range tap in. They pulled one back five minutes later when our lack of speed getting back when the counter is on was exposed. The man who ran down the right wing had three targets to aim for, and only two defenders back in time.

We came so close to getting back out to a goal lead early in the second half. The first shot was saved, and with the goalkeeper on the ground Cretu's header from the slapped away went just over. We pressed hard for much of the second half but struggled to get clean shots away, thanks to a mix of good defence and some poor passing at the crucial moment. And right on the death we paid for it, Butuc taking shot from just outside the area to level the scores.

CS Mioveni (9th) v CF Bohoril Beius (8th)

We were outplayed early, but with no harm done. The scoring opened on 20 minutes with Garcia's awkward cross, volleyed home by Cretu. That didn't change the game though, with Mioveni constantly brining the ball into our area it only looked like a matter of time before the floodgates opened.

It took until the 67th minute for it to start. A corner met an unmarked head for the equaliser. I ahd changed things a little to try and provide more control in the midfield, it hadn't really worked. On 87 minutes, Cretu met a ball from Piron (who surprisingly did something good) only to knock it into the upright. It stayed 1-1. We were outplayed generally, but perhaps made better chances. A fair result, maybe a little lucky our way.

CF Bohoril Beius (8th) v FCM UTA Arad 1945 (3rd)

Cretu was rested for this game, bringing Aboagye in for one of his rare appearances. He opened the scoring in the 21st minute, on the end of a Bardin cross. Eleven minutes later a string of passes between unmarked players was finished with a well placed strike and scores were level. That was almost immediately responded to, Jelen getting a shot away from a scramble, it deflected off Pocuca and he was credited with the goal.

Early in the second it was almost level again, Piron just nudging the ball wide as it was about dribble across the goal line. The resulting corner was cleared without incident. The UTA goalkeeper was called on a few times to stop some blasted long shots, actually on target, and turned them all aside. We got the points though, 2-1.

Sageata Navodari (8th) v CF Bohoril Beius (7th)

For most of the first half the ball was in our defensive third. We just couldn't get anything going. On one of the rare times we went forward the ball was easily cut off, but the pass was horrible, allowing Cretu to run on to the ball and with the goalkeeper out of position take advantage of the open goal. We had the lead, but had not created a real chance ourselves.

Despite coming close to extending the lead early, the second half largely followed the pattern of the first. Constant defence. Posteuca was forced into two very good saves, as well as being called on in a couple of more mundane moments. But somehowh we stole the 1-0 win.

CF Bohoril Beius (7th : 30 points, 0 GD) v CSU Vointa Sibiu (6th : 30 points +1 GD). Head to head : match drawn 1-1.

Simple equation. Win, and be in the top half when the league slits - avoiding relgation. Anything else, and be in the bottom half where relegation is still a factor.

he opening of the game was all about us, three good chances forced three really good saves in the first five minutes. We had other chances as well, but failed to pout any way. After 12 minutes, on their first move forward, Birbely beat three of our defenders in the air to head home a cross. Down 1-0. That signalled a change in the match as we started defending a lot, and only getting fairly low percentage shots away.

13 minutes into the second half we finally got rteward for pushing them, through a curling Garcia free kick. Even that was a low percentage shot, but at least it worked. That was replied to immediately, Borbely this time getting the assist. We really needed to shut him down, but I found no way of doing so. 78th minute and a long free kick from Diallo found Bucar's head for an equaliser.

We deserved a win, got a draw. And will therefore still be playing to avoid relegation after winter break and the league splits.

Table_2016_01_01.jpg

With ten games remaining, a six point gap should be enough but we can't afford to drop into a horror run. So many draws, again, but at least not not many are nil all.

edit: Global round up. Asian and African champions leagues finished in November. CWC in December, and no surprise with the player awards.

CF Bohiril Beius

Romanian Second League - Group 2

Just friendlies over the winter break, the highlight being the win over Timisoara, who sit 4th in the top flight.

The final game looks pretty bad. The Croatian side was simply too quick, too skilled, and too good. We won't be coming up against a team that good for the rest of the season. (That doesn't mean we won't get equally bad results.)

Fixtures_20160102.jpg

During the transfer window we sold striker Clement Abaoyage for £12k. He had only managed 2 games for 1 goal, with the quota of non-EU players filled by others (Garcia, Bardin and Diallo mostly). He is a good enough player to be damaging at this level, but just wasn't getting on the park and wanted to leave for first team football.
