Welcome to the FM14 thread for the reigning Johnstone's Paint Trophy winners Crewe Alexandra. Can you follow in Steve Davis' footsteps by taking the club back to Wembley (Davis has done it in both seasons that he's currently been in charge for)?

First Team & U21 Squad:

1. Steve Phillips (player/GK coach)

13. Alan Martin

21. Ben Garratt*

There isn't a great deal between both Phillips and Martin at the start of the game (both rated 2.5 CA) but seeing as Al has 2 stars worth of potential to fulfil and Steve is at full potential, I would use Martin as first choice and use Phillips as backup and cup keeper. Ben Garratt should be tutored by either of the other 2 keepers and used in the U21 league as their keeper.

In the U18 squad there are 2 keepers, Liam Matthews (who has 4.5 star potential) and Robbie Johnson so i'd look to use Matthews where possible.

2. Matt Tootle*

3. Kelvin Mellor*

15. Gregor Robertson

20. Oliver Turton*

It depends on what formation you want to use whether the players above are used as full backs or wing backs (assuming you don't play a 3-5-2 where these players would be redundant). Both Tootle and Mellor are the first choice players on the left and right respectively and both have an able deputy with Robertson (the only left footer of the 4) as Tootle's backup and Turton as Mellor's on the right.

James Baillie (not to be confused with ex-Alex and current Derby midfielder James Bailey) is the only full back option in the U18 team.

4. Harry Davis*

5. Mark Ellis

6. Adam Dugdale*

12. George Ray*

16. Jon Guthrie

25. Thierry Audel

Again there is plenty of cover for the centre back positions. Harry Davis and Mark Ellis should be your first choice centre backs (if you play with 2 of them rather than 3) with Adam Dugdale as your 3rd choice centre back. George Ray though has a lot of potential and is well worth using during the 1st season whilst Guthrie (left) and Audel (right) can also cover in full back roles.

Joe Kearns and Jon Moran are the 2 centre backs with the most potential in the U18s whilst Perry Ng, Ryan Allcock and Louis Johnson make up the numbers here.

8. Abdul Osman

11. Byron Moore*

14. Bradden Inman

18. Liam Nolan*

23. Michael West

24. Lee Molyneux

26. Chuks Aneke (on loan from Arsenal until January)

27. Ryan Colclough*

29. Billy Waters*

42. Anthony Grant

You'll notice that i've included the wide men in here as well. Centrally you have the option of playing with a defensive midfielder if you choose captain Osman in there (Grant, Waters and Nolan are also options to play that role although none are natural) as well as attacking options in Aneke and Inman if you play with an attacking midfielder. The wide options are Moore, West, Molyneux and Colclough (Molyneux is the only left footer of the 4 whilst they are all wingers except for Colclough who is more of an inside forward).

From the U18 squad there is some potential in all of the midfielders. George Cooper is the only wide man here whilst Toby Mullarkey, Michael Pino, Joe Howell and James Jones are the central midfielders.

7. Max Clayton* (he'll be leaving at the end of his contract - end of the 1st season)

9. Mathias Pogba

10. AJ Leitch-Smith*

19. Vadaine Oliver

Surprisingly enough England youth international Max Clayton is the main man here whilst last season's top scorer Mathias Pogba (older brother of French international Paul) is the target man of the group although he'll miss the first half of the season due to injury. AJ Leitch-Smith is another option similar to Clayton and Oliver is another target man like Pogba but neither of them is as good as the first choice pairing.

There is some potential in the U18 squad here as well as Callum Saunders (son of former Welsh international Dean), Andre Brown and Chris Speed have the highest PA according to the stars whilst Liam O'Neill, Dominic Smith, Fraser Murdoch and Callum Pritchard-Ellis are the other options.

Who are the new players in the squad?

There have been 5 new signings over the summer to the squad. Defender Thierry Audel has arrived on a free from local club Macclesfield, Lee Molyneux has arrived from Accrington Stanley and can play either at left back or left wing, midfielders Bradden Inman and Chuks Aneke have been re-signed following loan spells last season (Inman to a permanent 2 year deal and Aneke to another 6 month loan) and striker Vadaine Oliver signed for a nominal fee from Lincoln.

Who's departed from last season then?

The main player is captain Murphy from the picture in the next post who joined Leeds for £1m. There were also a number of players released after their deals ended such as Andy White, Harry Clayton (who both play for Nantwich now) and Paris Bateman (Stockport) all of whom never made a first team appearance.

Former academy players you may want to sign in your career:

Some of these are players that you should look at signing as soon as possible whilst others will not join you until the end of their career when both the club and manager have a better reputation.

Owain fon Williams (Tranmere)

Billy Jones (West Brom)

Steve Foster (free agent)

Grant Hanley (Blackburn)

Joe Gorman (Inverness)

Kenny Lunt (Bala Town)

David Vaughan (Sunderland - on loan at Nottingham Forest on patch 12.3.0)

Ashley Westwood (Aston Villa)

Luke Murphy (Leeds)

Ben Marshall (Blackburn)

Nick Powell (Man Utd)

Nicky Maynard (Cardiff - on loan at Wigan on patch 12.3.0)

Shaun Miller (Sheff Utd)

Michael Higdon (NEC Nijmegen)

In the final game of the 2012/13 season Steve Davis played the above 11 as his starting 11 to make history by naming a full side of players that have come through the academy (Middlesbrough had 10 in a team about 7/8 years ago now) and was a statement to clubs that you can achieve with players that have come through an academy system.

We have the facilities at the club at the start of the game to achieve a number of players in the first team that come through the FM system so you can continue this trend during your management.

Those marked with * in the 1st post came through the academy system and can be followed via this twitter page https://twitter.com/TheAlexAcademy which covers both the careers of players that have played for the academy side past and present as well as fixtures that contain them and any transfers made and rumours where possible.

To gain a record you'll need to beat the current record that is in this post (i'll try to keep it updated as much as possible). NB: All of these records must be in competitive games and under your human management (or at least 13/14 season onwards) rather than of all time.

Good to hear.

Also managed to get £5.25m from Spurs for Max before pressing continue for the first time after offering him out for £10m + 50% + season loan back (also got the other 2 clauses too).

Had a mixed bag in my first season. It was very close throughout, I was 19th with 5 games to go, but with a few good results at the end of the season, I finished 12th. The cups didn't go so well. Knocked out at the first hurdle in both the Capital One Cup & JPT, to Bury and Preston respectively, and the Second Round of the FA Cup to arch rivals Port Vale.

2cy4cab.jpg

Transfer-wise, had to sell Clayton due to his contract status, but got him back on a season long loan which was a positive, and he got a few goals in the process along with winger Ryan Colclough. Released quite a few players over the course of the season which I didn't need to save wages, and out of my incomings, Etheridge and Wikheim (a winger) were my only real starters from the group over the season.

qxl0th.jpg

The first two of the three players (Clayton/Colclough) were sensational. Colclough exceeded my expectations, and I rejected a £2M bid from Newcastle in January. Hoping to loan back Clayton for next season but doubt it'll be that easy. As for Billy Waters, I was going to loan him out but brought him on for a run out against Oldham in September and he scored, and grew as a player throughout the season, and should be a good player for the future.

2ylwvom.jpg

15gxmcw.jpg

mlco4.jpg

Apart from Colclough and Clayton, the other Winger in my 41221, Wikheim, was a good loan acquisition from Stromsgodset. Centre back Harry Davis grabbed 8 goals, mostly from penalties, & Chuks Aneke, on loan from Arsenal chipped in with a few goals too. Hopefully we'll push for promotion next year as my young team grows

Finished 9th in first season, Clayton and Colclough got 14 each, sold Clayton to saints for 2.8m plus loaned back. Currently in the play offs after 23 games in the second season, sold Colclough to Celtic for just under a million again with a loan back clause. Signed Maynard on loan from Cardiff but he's always injured, signed Last season League 1 top Scorer Tom Pope (Former player) for 200k,

Joe Murphy (Free)

Kelvin Mellor

Michael Duff (Free)

Harry Davis

Matt Tootle

Abdul Osman

Jake Forster Caskey (Loan)

Brad Inman

Michael West

Tom Pope (200k)

Ryan Colclough (Loan)

Subs:

Liam Matthews

Eddie Nolan

Matthew Booth (£500)

Anthony Grant

Byron Moore

Jacques Maghoma (Loan)

Nicky Maynard (Loan)

Had a 5* potential goalkeeper come through the ranks in my first intake but Hull offered him a contract and he went there for 100k :/

Second season came about quickly, and my aims were to get a top half, maybe a play-off finish. Never in my wildest imagination did I think i'd get automatic promotion.

b7j1ax.jpg

Transfer-wise, I got a million pound budget to play with, strengthened further with the departure of Harry Davis. Before I sold him he had 4 in 5 games from centre half at the start of the season, but his replacements on freebies were Gabriel Zakuani and Kevin Gomis on frees, and they were a fantastic partnership. The wage budget this season increased significantly, but I still splashed out £400k on a teenage goalkeeper from Northern Ireland who is going to be a top player, and £300k on midfielder Tom Taiwo who was a lynchpin in the centre. Brought back the trusted loanees Aneke and Wikheim, but the signing of the season was definitely Javier Patino. Just look at his stats

2zrdkqx.jpg

Unreal player for this level.

vnzhg6.jpg

And hopefully he can shoot me to the Premier League after I finished 2nd behind a fantastic Brentford side.

25ov0ub.jpg

Player stats. Aneke contributed very nicely from centre of the park.

20r5hc6.jpg

Colclough is developing nicely, he did not start as many games this season due to McLaughlin being loaned from forest on the wing, but he still got a few goals.

8xviti.jpg

Strandberg was another interesting freebie. Was my backup in the second half of the season to Patino. Took a while for him to score, but he has the potential to be a good striker.

------

Just screenshotted the most promising youngsters from my academy.

Josh McAllister (GK) signed from Linfield for £400,000

Andy Marks (AML) signed from Coleraine for £75,000

Garry Mitchell (LB) straight from the academy

Graeme Waters (DM) signed from Boston United for £8,000

Luke Bingham (ST) signed from East Fife for £80,000

Just finished my first season with Crewe and managed to get them promoted through the play offs, wouldn’t have been the case if it wasn’t for my goalkeeper Alan Martin (who is due to join Aberdeen) and Max Clayton who is due to go back to Spurs (sold him for 5m + season long loan)

I won so many games that I either didn’t deserve to or were fairly even due to those 2 players. A fair few of my first team are either out of contract and have agreed deals with other clubs or are due to return to parent clubs in the summer so it’s going to be a massive struggle to stay up next season. I only played 1 Championship club this season which was in the FA Cup, Doncaster who ended up getting relegated, and I got hammered 4-1

I've noticed that my right sided centre back often gets a bad rating no matter the score, have tried about 4 different players there and made sure they have stats good enough to match their role, I dont have any specific instruction on either so not sure why they keep playing poorly

I’ve got a decent amount to spend due to the Clayton sale but can’t offer much in wages; I’m also finding it hard to attract players on loan as the clubs always say they want the player to play with higher quality players. I’m going to have to scour all the released players and try and come up with a squad that can avoid relegation

I got some decent looking youngsters through the youth system but none are ready for championship football yet. I'm going to have to try and build a team round the players I'm keeping Tootle, Davis and Mellor in defence and Colclough and Inman in midfield so that's at least 6 first team members I need

Only plus point is I've gotten rid of every bit of deadwood in my squad, some I had too mutually terminate their contracts but most moved on for knock down prices. Took me quite a while to get rid of Pogba, Ellis and Dugdale but they've gone

I managed to sell him for £5.5m (edit: £4.5m upfront + £1m after 1 game) and got a transfer budget of around £2.2m transfer and with a few loans out around £4k for wages but you could always adjust your budgets as needed.

nice one. Thanks!

With that king of money has anyone been able to sign the likes of

Javier Patino

Renan Teixera

Kasper Kusk

Canuto

Sangweni

Bolanas

In the first season. You can pick up all these for under £1m combined. I have them in a Leeds save. Wondered if any of them would drop to playing in League one with Crewe??

I sold Clayton to Spurs for 5.25m up front, season long loan and 50% sell on clause and got 3.25m to spend but I couldnt offer wages above 1.8k a week nor could I edit my wage budget against my transfer budget which was weird

Spurs are now sniffing round Ryan Colclough but I've resisted selling him because his value has dropped by quite a bit despite him signing a longer contract and playing in a higher division

I hadn't actually checked just assumed, but neither can I :( and I'm £1k over haha, better ship out some of the deadwood!

Looks like I'm going to survive in the Championship in my 2nd season. I'm in mid-march and I'm 16th in the league but 19 points or so from the bottom 3. Bottom 3 will be Sunderland (someone has Sunderland's finances a but wrong on this game mind), Barnsely and one of Millwall or Preson

Whilst I'm doing well on the pitch I'm losing money despite being a fair bit under my wage budget. Was looking at the seasons expendature last night and I'm losing money due to the clubs training / youth facilities so I'll have to make some player sales in the summer.

Problem is I dont have a Max Clayton or a Nick Powell who I can sell for a decent wedge at the moment so may have to sell more than one. Mind in the last 2 seasons I've had some really good youths come through, have poached some from other sides and signed about 10 youths from Ireland / N Ireland. Think a fair few of them have a chance at becoming Premier League footballers so think I'll blood few of them once I'm safe / next season

Just finished Year 1, finishing 2nd! Had a chance to win the league on the final day but got crushed by Kevin Davies and Preston 3-0. Ended up finishing level with Wolves on points but losing out on goal differential. Made some changes to my 4-2-3-1 tactic in Janurary that sent me on an incredible run of form second half of the year. Played a Bayern inspired 4-2-3-1 after the new year that looked like this...

GK - Martin

RB - FB (S) - Mellor

RCB - CB (D) David Stephens ( Signed from Barnet in August for 135k)

LCB - CB (D) Davis

LB - FB (A) - Tootle / Molyneux

RDM - BWM (D) - Osman / James Dunn ( Signed from Stevanage for 87k in January)

LDM - DLP (S) - Grant / Sam Mantom ( Signed from Walsall for 145k in January)

AMR - IF (S) - Colclough

AMC - SS (A) - Aneke

AMR - IF (A) - Leitch - Smith

ST - DLF (A) - Clayton ( sold to Tottenham for 5.5 and returned on loan)

Rigid

Counter

Be More Disciplined

Drill Crosses

Stick to Positions

Hassle Opponents

More Direct Passing

Play out of Defense

Stay on Feet

Stephens, Dunn and Mantom were my only signings and all three were immense. Only Aneke had a higher rating then Stephens and Mantom and Dunn was all over the place breaking up attacks. Colclough ( 8 goals), Clayton ( 21 goals) and Mellor were the other standouts.

Season 2 in the Championship and so far I am getting crushed. Almost into November and only have 4 points. Hopefully, we can stay up.

Besides some fringe players like Dugdale and Turton, Harry Davis was the only player I sold. The now tycoon backed Tranmere came in with a 1.6 million offer which I could not turn down.

My biggest signing was this fella from Swansea to replace Clayton for 170k.

2u5th68.png

My other 1st team signings were some still usefull veterans to provide some leadership and to tutor the younsters.

CB - Andy Butler from Walsall 140k ( Leader, Reserved)

GK - Micheal McGovern from Doncaster for 58k ( Resilient, Unflappable)

LB - Adam El-Dab on loan from Brighton ( Model Professional, Reserved)

CM - Keith Southern on a Free

Signed a couple youngsters too, including this guy on a free ..

And the home grown crown jewel who has already attracted bids from United and City and is projected to become a leading Premership keeper...

Hey guys, thought I would post an update of how my crewe career has gone. in my first season I finished around mid-table, second season I finished 2nd and got promoted to the championship, im currently in my first season in the championship and im sitting in 2nd place 7 points clear of 3rd with 9 games left.

my current team is:

gk: mannone

rb: luke o'neill

cb: Baldwin

cb: stephens

lb: nthle (or something like that)

dm: mellor

cm: aneke (500k from arsenal, must buy)

cm: rocks (region from Ireland)

rm: odubajo (leyton orient)

lm: colclough (absolutely amazing)

st: brown (starts of at crewe)

my team is full of youth players, so im very surprised im 2nd, im currently trying to keep all the premiership vultures away from my youth players and regions, ryan colclough and andre brown are my 2 best players, I will post 2 screenshots up of these guys for you to have a look when I figure out how.

has anyone got any advice on how to get players to sign contracts as colclough and brown are refusing to talk even though im pretty sure I couldn't be doing any better, its really frustrating!!!

hope your all enjoying your careers!!

While you're in FM press Alt & F9 to take a screenshot. Then go into the screenshots folder which is documents/sports interactive/football manager 2014/screenshots. Upload it to an image hosting website i.e Photobucket. Then paste the direct link to here. It will give you 4/5 links, the one that says "Direct" is the one you want to paste.

Plays on either wing inside forward when at AML and winger at AMR, although I did train him with some striker roles to up his off the ball and finishing. I think with even more careful training from the start he can be even better than he is on my game.

thought I would give Crewe a start and was happy with my season finished 8th but could of made the play offs had it not been a defeat to preston in my last game some good performers from clayton,Oliver and Colclough, brought in some good players in babic, norris on loan but made a few mistakes bringing in litmanan and bardsley on loan heres a few screenshots.

So, I'm halfway through my first season and I'm sitting 9th in the league, 2 points off the play-offs. The January transfer window was coming to an end, in fact it was deadline day and I had all completed all my business..... Then this transfer offer came in. I certainly wasn't expecting it.

Anyone else had similar experiences?

Link to post

yeah Man United signed him from me aswell I had already got Jason Brown in so I sold him

In the 1st January transfer window as well? And how much for? Utd offered me only £49k for Martin, and considering he's worth £190k I tried re-negotiating, but then they backed out. Martin never complained. It was like it never happened.
