This is a funny read lol.

I have a couple in my team.

Bosko Milcic Doesn't look hard but I've never been certain if I was saying it right lol I go for 'Bos-co - Mill-chitch' but have been known to say 'Mill-chick' as he's from Montenegro (not like I know if that makes a difference or not lol).

Tsvetomir Todorov This chap is from Bulgaria, I usually go for 'Vet-omeer - Tod-o-rov' Assuming the the 'Ts' is silent.

David Swärdh Swedish Right Back... Not a clue how to say this guys name.... I stick with David lol. At a guess I'd have to go with 'Sw-aar-d' though.

Andrija Vrhovski I'm pretty certain I've got this one right with 'And-ria - Ver-hov-ski'

Ercan Atilgan This guy is from Turkey.. Think i'm spot on with how to say it right. I go with 'Er-can - Atil-gan'

    Bosko Milcic - Bos-kho Mil-chi-c

    Tsvetomir Todorov -Zvetomir Todorov

David Swärdh- I cannot tell here i am from eastern europe and i ussually hate nordic names hard to pronounce.

    Andrija Vrhovski - And-ria - Ver-hov-ski' correct ;)

Ercan Atilgan - Ercian Atil-gian , when you have turkish players it's and "i" that you ussually put to pronounce their name .

The letter Ä is pronounced like the a in the english word 'stand'. The 'h' at the end is silent, pretty much just a spelling variety, as is the 'w' instead of a regular 'v', and should be pronounced as a your average english 'v'. So, pronounce it like 'svärd', with the pointers on the 'ä' above.

The swedish word 'svärd' means sword, by the way.

IIRC then ll is pronounced as soft 'j' (estonian) - in english it would sound like y but with emphasis.
é indicates that emphasis (? - damn I suck in filological terms) is on the last part of the word.

So altogether it should sound like gui-yeen or smth. like that.

He's Finnish, so each letter is pronounced exactly how it's written. In 'Lehtola' emphasis is on the 'Leh' on h is relatively strong and can be heard. Finnish pronounce single t (also k and p) quite brief and softly, sometimes it even sounds more like d (i.e. Laitinen sounds like laidinen). Although this is not very significant as h in front of t makes t also a bit stronger.

I believe the general rule is z is pronounced as 'sh' and w as 'v'

    Krzynowek = Kryshnovek

    Przemyslaw Kazmierczak = Prshemyslav Kashmiercshak

Razvan Rat is actually Razvan Raț

In Romanian ț is ts in English or Ц in Russian, so his name would be pronounced as Raz-vahn Rats (Like the Soviet footballer from the 1980's)

The Russian Club is ЦCKA (CSKA Moscow) so its actually ts-ess-kay-ah, whereby the Ц acually stands for tsentralny.

Ć is Serbo-Croat is what makes Modric sound like Mod-Rich

Gornik Zabrze is pronounced goor-neek za-bz-uh. Zabrze is said quickly and in one syllable.

In Polish the z is the same as English but its combined with other letters it changes its sound (a dipthong):

    cz - ch
    sz - sh
    dz - j

The best way to make the 'll' sound in Welsh I told is to put your tongue on your top two teeth and blow lightly. I think when English people immitate Welsh they make a throat sound (glottal) whereas the actual sound is within the mouth (plosive)

Common in Vietnam and here in Cambodia. Sounds like it is. Try saying 'sing' and then remove the 'si'!

Nediljko Parlov - This croatian regen's first name has boggled my mind since I first signed him! Since he's my best striker, I'd like to show him some respect by pronouncing his name correctly.

Isn't it a rule in French that you don't pronounce the "s" if it's the last letter of a word and comes right behind a vowel?

I mean, Paris is pronounced Pa-ree. So I would suggest that Lloris is pronounced Lo-ree.

how about a turkish player I have, may not be a regen, but I think so:

    Cihan Gokce

(the o has the two dots above - umlaut (sp?) in german,)

I'm definitely not saying you're wrong, in fact the video proves you're right, but for me as a Dutch person it makes no sense whatsoever that Paris is pronounced Pa-ree and Lloris is pronounced Lo-ree-se

I've never see him IRL, only in FM. And in FM he kicks ass, to put it in an Eric Cartman kinda way.

Now screw you guys, I'ma going home.

Okay, here's one for you. My Utrecht loanee Simon Cziommer. At the moment I'm going with Chee-o-mer, with perhaps a little bit of 'z' on the Ch part.

    Any ideas?

I LOVE this thread. It's important to note that people with different mother tongues will pronounce things differently. If Hugo Lloris moves to Spain he won't be Loree anymore he'll be Yo-rees. But it's nice to know what the original intention is.

Also some players maybe from a certain country but their names will originate elsewhere which means even they may not pronounce it "correctly" - like Jag-ee-el-ka...

He-reth but don't roll the r. The r is only rolled if there are two like perro (dog) and pero (but).

    Canabary explains it perfectly:

Nearly - you need to pronounce the middle e:

Ow-re (with a rolling r if you can manage it and re as in red not reach) -ko (like collect) -e (like education not email) -che -a (like apple, not abraham)

And yes, as someone earlier mentioned - Yossi Benayoun, not "Benna-noon". That always rattles my cage when watching ITV Champions League!

PS. What does David Pleat actually want? Go away. I'd rather listen to wideboy Ian Wright.

Ha i thought i recognised the name and then i realised it was my player you were talking about from a save-game i haven't played in over 7 months! Well as a tribute to the discovery of knowing how to properly pronounce his name, i'll post a screenshot of the fella in question:

I bought him from Bilbao, then sold him to Celtic who in turn sold him on to Inter. Tbh i just always called him Jon

Generally u's in Spanish are silent when they're in front of an e (ue, Miguel is pronounced Meegel, with emphasis on gel and a soft g like in great) or an i (ui, Guillermo is pronounced Geeyermo, again with a soft g and with emphasis on yer).

And about Lloris/Paris and the s in the end, it is only pronounced in some names, never in words that end with s. And the final s is only pronounced in names that originate from Latin, Greek and Catalan amongst others. Lloris is originally Catalan but in French you just say Loris.

I think the "Ido" might be pronounced as "Eedoh", but as for the last name, I'm not sure if it'd be pronounced any differently from how it looks. I'd hope so though.

    That's brilliant.

I still haven't got an answer for:
    Ikhtiyor Mamadaliev

    Ubeikistan regen.

I pronounce it "Ik-hye-or Mamadal-E-ev". The first name is the hardest part.

I'd also like to know how to pronounce the Bosnian name, Urosevic.

    Grafite is pronounced "Gra-feet".

Dzeko is pronounced "Dz-ecko". The "Dz" is pronounced like the "G" in "Ginola". It's a soft sound.

So it's ee-ree-ne'u (/irine'u/ in IPA). Accent falls on the e.

A rule of thumb for Romanian names: in almost all cases they are pronounced as they are written (phonetic language).

Frejlach is fray-lakh, more or less. "Ch" in Czech is a digraph representing the [x] sound in IPA. Think Bach the composer, loch as in a Scottish lake... a soft sound between "h" as in 'ah!' and "kh" with a silent k.
