There's a lump-sum payment every summer for the database editor of each team, i.e. those that decide on the attributes. There may be (I haven't ever heard there is though) for head researchers of entire countries, but assistant researchers who decide on attributes for their club do not get paid anything. EA provide a lump-sum payment + a free copy for every team editor. It's not a huge amount but it's a least something, I'm surprised SEGA/SI don't provide the same.
