Default *Official* Football Manager 2013 Announced!

The best-selling, most realistic football management series ever made is back and will be released before Xmas. Football Manager 2013 introduces more than 900 new features & new ways to play. Check http://www.footballmanager.com from Monday for more indepth feature videos each week.

    Game Information

    Football Manager. Always.

Football Manager is the best-selling, most realistic football management series ever made. Football Manager 2013 celebrates 20 years of games from the people at Sports Interactive by introducing an array of new features.

This year’s version allows you to take control of any club in more than 50 nations across the world and includes all of Europe’s biggest leagues as well as database of over 500,000 real-world players and staff.

As well as some landmark new features in the Career Mode, there are now new ways to enjoy your Football Manager experience.

    NEW TO CAREER MODE…

    Match Engine
The 3D match engine has seen huge improvements this year. Everything on the pitch looks more realistic; from the stadiums, the players’ movement, intelligence, and the way the ball moves through the air.

We’ve also introduced hundreds of new animations to make the game feel more realistic and we’ve made the whole experience more televisual by introducing new camera angles and showing the kick-off and final whistle.

    Manager Roles
Another notable difference is the significant restructure of the manager’s staff and a revamp of their roles. The most obvious is that we’ve introduced the position of Director of Football into the game for the first time, which will allow managers to pass on some of their workload, such as contract negotiations, if they choose to.

In addition to this, we’ve also increased the number of specialist coaching roles within the game and given the manager greater flexibility to choose which coaches offer advice and when. The manager can also choose to complain about boardroom interference – although that particular option should probably be used sparingly.

    And much more…
A brand new training system, improved international management, tones in press conferences & a new user interface.

    NEW WAYS TO PLAY…

    Classic and Challenge Modes
Football Manager Classic is a less time-consuming way to enjoy Football Manager. The essence of the game is exactly the same – the manager still takes charge of a squad of players and competes at whatever level he or she chooses – but they will now find that a number of their responsibilities have either been taken over by their support staff or have disappeared completely.

For example, while the player still takes charge of training in FMC, this is carried out at a 'full team' level only – there's no individual player training. And when it gets to matches themselves, there are no team talks or opposition reports... you just go straight to a game using the same 3D match engine as Career Mode. The games are played out in a quicker 'highlights only' fashion, but you can even speed this up by going straight to ‘Instant Result’.

Players who opt for Football Manager Classic will also find that they have a couple of further options in terms of how they play the game; they can either play a full open-ended ‘Career’ or they can choose to play in the new ‘Challenge’ mode.

In Challenge mode they’ll find themselves in a particular situation which will test their management skills over a shorter game time – usually half a season. Can you win a trophy with a team consisting almost entirely of kids? Or could you guide your club to safety despite being bottom of the table at Xmas?

We first introduced Challenge Mode in Football Manager Handheld 2012 and it proved to be so popular that we’ve decided to include it in FMC too.

The game will come with four free-to-play challenges, each of which feeds in to a global leaderboard.

    Network Play
The brand new Network Play is fully integrated with Steam’s network functionality which means that players should be able to set up and enjoy games against their friends far more easily than before. The Network Mode also allows people to set-up special one-off leagues and cups and to import their team from their career mode, so you can now end any debate about whose FM team is better.

The deeper integration with Steam will also allow us to manage worldwide leaderboards, so, for the first time you’ll really know how good a manager you are.

Plus over 900 other new features!

Can we have details in text form so those of us unable to watch videos can see what its all about?

Micro transactions sounds horrible. That won't mean the end of FMRTE and so on, right? Don't want this game to go the Tiger Woods way of paying to unlock what is otherwise just known as cheats.

    Everything else sounds great.

I am suprised, was expecting more negative comments. I like it, sounds like it should be good, Pleased about tones in press conferences, loans and things like that revamped sounds good, hoping for some more big changes to the game, I can't see myself playing the 2 new modes.

Glad to hear about classic mode - fm definitely takes too long for me. Hope too much hasn't been removed for this mode though!

You know you're addicted to Football Manager when the next game is announced and your priority is to watch the announcement video while you desperately need to go to the toilet.

very exciting news.. and some exciting new features i think... probably leave the classic mode etc but good additions i feel...

I'm pleased SI are adding to the existing model and not scrapping it for the microtransaction stuff fully... Having a choice makes it fine...

Looking forward to seeing what they do with the media and the scouting. The classic mode doesnt interest me but the challenges are a good idea. Bit of a shame it looks like we'll have to wait until nov/dec at best to play the game

if classic mode offers the player the option to essentially buy a few in-game millions for real world money...

i wonder how SI have gone about ensuring no third party tools will be able to override this option..

    Default Ai improvement

I listen these press conferences every year before release, get excited and can't wait until the game is out but end up with disappointment after 3-4 months and then stop playing.

For me - most important issue was the AI development.. Personally, I don't want a new camera angle...I only want AI to compete with me.. if you keep on winning all the time , starting the league with 15 games 15 wins, when AI teams buy crap players for years and years, then game loses the fun after maximum 5 years years of career mode.

Unfortunately, haven't heard anything so far regarding AI improvement so far..

I hope the Transfers and loans have been sorted out to the extent that when you want to loan players it should be so easy as lower league clubs would be snapping at your door to loan your young stars.
and agents please sort them out, you can never tell a player it is your agent that won't let me speak to you......yet the player wants a move to your club, they should sack there agent.
another quick one if you don't need a player you should be able to tell them so it is up to them to also help them selfes find a club via there agent instead of just us offering the player to other clubs his agent may find a team that we did not approach..

other than that i am looking forward to this one as i have the rest...

Really looking forward to the new training and scouting system. Also the director of football role included would be good seen as though most contracts in real are gone through them. The tax and wages part looks great for those "greedy" players.

Classic mode sounds terrible, kind of bummed they wasted their time on that instead of fixing things like press conferences, which now sound even more convoluted. I am excited about the upgraded financial system in the "real" game though. Not touching classic "kiddie" mode though.

Oh they arent putting micro transactions in are they ? That is truly awful.

As long as it doesnt affect the game for anyone who doesnt want them then its no biggie, but a real shame SI want to try to make extra money. If you want extra millions at moment you just change it in an editor. If they are going to prevent real time editors then that too could be crap.

Sounds excellent. I actually love a long and in-depth FM career so I tend to only buy every other version but lack of free time meant I never bought FM12 after a 40-odd year career in FM10.

I'll almost certainly be buying FM13, not because it has FMC, although it is a brilliant addition and one I'd expect many users on here to take advantage of, but challenge mode sounds like something I would really enjoy when I get a bit of free time away from work, as well as starting up another long-haul game.

"Classic mode adds various 'unlockable' features that can ease the difficulty of the game. Players can remove the need for work permits, for example, or add cash to their transfer budgets.

This is where Football Manager adds in a new microtransactions model, with players allowed to either earn the features or pay for them themselves."

Classic Mode is a streamlined version for those who don't have the time to make the commitment to the behemoth that FM has become. Miles suggesting you could get through a season in 8-10 hours of play time.

I'm happy about changements on training system, but what about the Match Engine?

The 3D match engine will be improved, it's ok. But is the match engine itself improved? I don't want to play FM11 again with better graphic.

Can't believe they've wasted time and energy on producing FMC and the challenges. It's all far too 'gimmicky' for my liking.

Adding tones to the media interaction isn't going to make them any less boring either IMO, infact it's going to be worse as it's even more repetitive clicks.

Please, please SI, say you have vastly improved the AI's ability for squad building in the next announcement.

Not interested at all in the classic mode or paying for anything other than the game, but thats the way things are going now, i cant see any reason why spending time on that will have adversly affected the normal game so im looking forward too it all the same. New loaning system sounds interesting and new animations in the ME are always good. Interested to see how they have changed the PC's as well.

Am I right in thinking the challenge mode is only available if you play the classic mode? That's how it reads in the OP.

Interesting how they say there are 4 free-to-play challenges that come with the game - this makes me think there will be lots more available later on via expansion packs at extra cost. Alternatively, challenges can already be created in the editor! Unless of course they decide to limit what we can do in the editor....

I hope AI squad building has improved so "Career Mode" can actually be challenging after 10 or more seasons.

Can't say I'm overwhelmed, but then, FM has always been evolution rather than revolution. I'm slightly disappointed that the focus of the announced features seems to be on getting the human player to be less involved (Director of Football, FM Classic), but at the same time I know there are some players who've been clamouring for it. I've no personal interest in FM Classic (and, as a knock-on, in the unlockables etc.) or Network play, although the challenge mode sounds like it could be worth a look.

But the devil's in the detail, and a first announcement of this nature was never going to go into great depth about individual small changes. I'm hoping the press conference change does amount to more than just adding tones in, since they don't seem to have a great deal of effect as it is, but really a lot of FM13 is about fixing and expanding things that are already in FM12. So although this post's a bit on the negative side, it's great to have it announced, and I'm still eagerly anticipating further information.

FM Classic (why spend time on such a feature? Do you really think that's the way to capture new audience?), fully integrated steam (dear lord...), better 3D engine (hope it's not the usual marketing talk), better press conference (hope it's not the usual marketing talk) and better A.I. (hope it's not the usual marketing talk), better scouting (hope it's not the ususual marketing talk).

Dissapointingly, no news yet for improvement of tactics (one of the most badly designed systems in the game, where players HAVE to be placed on a certain spot on the pitch), no news about disticnt A.I. manager improvements on building squads or countering threats,no news about better competition for youth talents and transfer market behaviour which cripple the game down the line... But you inform us of a new tax system...?

I hope a real announcement, where "we have options for casual players now!" is not the centre piece, is coming sooner than later.

Can't wait now. Classic mode sounds good I think, as I don't have the time to play for as long as I would like.

Big question, when playing can we switch between career game and normal game. For an example, you start the season and want to do everything yourself, then you are mid table for the 2nd half of the
season can you switch to classic mode to finish the season more quickly.

I'm really glad about the addition of FMC: I've been a fan of FM since the early CM days and yes, the whole management has really become complex and somewhat cumbersome (while still satisfying and enjoyable), so I really look forward to customize my experience in order to "load off" some stuff to my Director of Football.

Plus, in theory no one loses, since we still have the full career mode .

Anyways, what we should really look forward, is an improvement to the match AI, tactics system and AI squad building. Everything else is just the icing on the cake, IMO.

Do what I did.. find a nice desk where no one is behind you. Turn one of your monitor a little so your neighbour cant see the screen. VOILA! you have internet freedom - dont misuse it though - but I just like to know that no one is seeing my monitor as people are so quick to judge!

I don't really see why this module is being messed with when there are always major issues in the match engine, transfer and squad engine, AI and financial issues.

International Management gets touted as improved every year, but it's not a core feature compared to the club game.

I never use press conferences because they are repetitive, boring, stupid and will eventually cause an illogical response from your players and shatter their morale.

New user interface. Another one? SI tinker with this all the time, aren't they happy yet?

Football Manager Classic - A dumbed down mode for casual players who aren't good enough at the full game. I'll never use it.

    Network Play. Long overdue.

Hopefully there are fixes in the scouting module (which is input intensive and takes too much time to setup big networks), finances (where you have no idea what your club is going to make or have any kind of projection for potential finances at the end of the year so you can plan your own budget, the squad system (where clubs buy stupidly) and the board AI (being incredibly obstinate and shutting down vital upgrades and manager requests with no feedback).

I hope some of those points are included in the '900 features'.
Why the arrogant attitude? - and who says FMC is only for "bad" players? - what about those that have a life and cant spend endless hour fiddling with details and instead want to be able to finish a season in only a few hours?

Agree with you on some points though, such as Network Play finally getting looked at and hopefully they've improved AI squad building and the financial model

Sounds okay. I'll probably never touch any of those new additions, except for training. Improving the Press Conferences is all well and good but after 2-3 seasons I don't care anymore and just use my assistant. I'm never going to let the AI take over the contracts as based on the state of the contracts when you take over at a new club it's completely incompetent.

A massive improvement in the AI long term squad building is just about the only thing that could persuade me to buy the game full price at release, otherwise I'll wait until February or March and get it cheap.

That's the way some clubs operate. Some have a director of football and you don't have a choice. Some clubs don't give the manager full control over team affairs. It's more realistic.

    Maybe perfectly fine your view.

And they have addressed the other points you've made there, in the match engine, transfers, squad engine, AI and financial issues, all mentioned in the video as being improved.

Maybe not a core feature your view, but Ilike IM and I don't like the way FM12 or previous versions worked with international management. As a result I've neglected managing internationally as it's just too dificult the way the UI is implemented and the selection of players.

I hope the new improvements to International Management suck me back into this world. I love being an international manager.

I agree with you on this one. I really hope they've toned down the impact it has player morale. I usually let me AssMan handle this side of things anyway. Couldn't be arsed with answering 50 questions a week - sorry the SAME 50 questions every week!

The UI in general is absolutely terrible. It has barely any continuity, and is a hassle to use. I really hope the improvements to the UI make it far more efficient. At the moment it's very inefficient and a chore to use.

Fair enough if you won't use it... others will. He said in the video it's been a success in FMH - so they've included it here too. I might use it if I need to drown an hour but don't want to get submersed in my full game I have going on.

Never use it. If I was take your standpoint on things so far I could say "It's a complete waste of time updating this blah blah blah" but the truth is others do use it. I don't mind that they updated it - and spent time on it - it's something others use.

He said in the video the Scouting has been updated. And the financial system was also mentioned in the video.

This is just a teaser video announcing some of the new features. Over the course of the next couple of weeks they'll go more indepth to the new features.

Some new features I'll enjoy, some I won't. Some updates to features I won't like, others I will.

But I'm sure SI aren't catering to your or I, specifically, but on a well rounded updates and new features based on the entire community.

You have to take it that they can't just do the updates and new features that one person wants. Win some lose some.

Classic mode doesn't appeal to me. I am one of those with very little time to play FM these days but I still like to have more control over training and I watch matches in extended highlights mode because watching the game is probably the most important part of management. Once I've set training schedules they don't need to be touched again, team talks and oppo instructions are all handled by my assistant anyway so it's not like FMC will actually cut down any unnecessary time for me.

I couldn't imagine ever using an instant result button. How many managers pick their team and then say "Right, I'm off, somebody text me the result after the game"? (apart from Andy Flower yesterday but that's cricket so it doesn't count).

Not explicitly stated either way. I'd think the smart money would be at least the same Steam activation requirement as FM12, box or no box.

I think that, for those who want the traditional, "hardcore" FM experience, FMC can still be useful as a "scouting ground" to check out minor and possibly unknown leagues, just to get a sense of how that particular championship works for a full season without having to experience the career mode first.

For example: hey, ok, I'll play my usual "career" playthrough taking a Conference South team to glory; maybe I'll also play a career game with my favourite Serie A team. But what about checking out the MLS in FMC mode? I never played with a MLS team, but maybe FMC will provide enough interest to try it out, alongside the normal career save games.

I think that's the right mindset when thinking about FMC, at least for us "experienced" FM/CM players.

Nothing really stands out here at all..have been saying this since FM2010 the transfer system is out dated and unrealistic..why waste time in doing a scaled down version (classic) when what the game needs is all the excitement of the transfer window and deadline day... FIFA12 intergrated it last year and IMHO makes FM transfer window look non-exsistant and extremely boring..I mean it's by far the most exciting time in the football calender...the transfer window needs a complete re-vamp!! ... dissapointed

Best guess it will be the same as last year in that while you can buy a boxed version it will have to be tied to a Steam account (i'll still be buying the disk as its quicker to install)

i want to see a new match engine which is more realistic. and a press conference which is dynamic and not repetitive. and AI squad management improved.

it seems like another mass visual enhancements which i'm not interested in at all. won't be buying this game until i know if things that need massive overhaul is improved. visual upgrades like animations and i won't bother.

I truly hope SI have overhauled the tactical side of the game, which is an area where I feel has serious weaknesses. We should be able to practice runs and specific attacks, movement and positioning on and off the ball in various areas of the pitch for one. I remember in one of the old games SI did have positioning off the ball and I don't know why they scrapped it. Real football takes into account specific movement and positioning in all areas of the pitch. This is a key issue I hope SI will implement this year which would improve the sim experience even more. Cosmetic crap such as more variation in answers at press conferences and stuff doesn't really interest me. Hopefully SI brings some changes in the core of the game - the strictly football managerial match day experience - this year.

I've bought every single issue of ChampMan/FM since the start though, so I'll probably buy the game regardless this season as well, but hey... :-)

Really excited about this already! I wish the game was released tomorrow. I was one of those who suggested a lighter version of the game for more casual players. I won't use the new 'classic' option myself but if this gets more people playing the game then I will be delighted about its inclusion.

Two biggest things I hope for in FM13: - Fix the bloody cup bug that means 'big' even 'medium' teams play terrible teams [14, 15 year olds etc] in their cup games and always lose, thus a much lower division team will usually win it. And hopefully better AI in reference to squad building, transfers etc.

Indeed I was itching for a SSN style transfer window or a live window to be implimented...aminations as pretty as they look (and I do watch extended highlights) was the last thing that needed improvement..it works just fine..I go on quite a few FM fanatic forums and loads of FM gamers wanted a complete re-vamp on the transfer side..not to sound too critical but its just so repetitive and most of the time comes and go's without you even knowing..I do like the idea of a Director of football mind!

Funny how some people say training system overhauled ... useless. You guys must be kidding. WE (THE COMMUNITY) asked for this for like 3 editions now and we finally got it. Thank you SI keep up the good job. The current training system is way too simple and doesnt resemble football in any way shape or form.

How exactly have they ruined the game lol? Help me out here.

Yeah my new strategy is to buy FM after the final patch is released so February/March. Hopefully I can stick to that and not give in and buy the game earlier than planned I'm also still playing FM 12 and only at the end of my 1st season on my current save so I'll be playing that up until then.
