Default Trying to open Steam I get the message Steam cannot connect

Out of absolutely nowhere, my FM12 stops working. Trying to open Steam I get the message "Steam cannot connect, it needs to be online", or some-such. After trying everything I could find, I decided to delete everything linked to FM12 and buy the game again (a couple of months later) with the summer sale, seeing as it only cost 12. After going through the whole process, I get the same message! BTW, I have a 13 inch MP, which apparently Steam have a poor grasp of. I'm disgusted, TBH, out of nowhere, through no fault of my own, I've wasted about 45, a complete joke.

    Try this from the FAQ:

Mac - 'Steam needs to be online to update' but I am already online

Follow these instructions if you are on a Mac and you get a popup stating "Steam needs to be online to update", even though you are already connected to the internet.

*Please note that on Mac OS X Lion the Macintosh HD is hidden: Open a Finder window then at the top click on 'Go' then 'Go to folder' which should be second from bottom. Finally, type in '~/Library'.
That will bring up your Library and you can now follow the steps below.

    1. Remove the registry.vdf file:

    - Go to Finder
    - Go to Macintosh HD
    - Go to Users
    - Go to your home (Shape of a house) folder
    - Go to Library
    - Go to Application Support
    - Go to Steam
    - Delete the file registry.vdf

P.S. I'm usually a placid character, but this is genuinely absurd, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Manden I'll try that after what I'm trying ATM, I re-downloaded Steam with a different account and I'm not sure I used that account the first time I tried to load Steam. Long-shot but... really fancy some FM too, haven't played since christmas!

Still going... no doubt it'll end in my heart0sinking but currently on 50,500 odd out of 56, 348. Usually ends on roughly 15,000 out of the usual 48,00ish.

It started with the registry.vdf file (i think it can only start with this), so then I deleted it whilst steam was updating, waiting now.
