    The Magical Magyars

I had a go with this on FM11 here is the Link
    [FM11] The Magnificent Magyars
Updates on the career will follow a similar way

Hungary were considered the greatest international team of the 1950's, going on a 4 year unbeaten run until they lost the 1954 World Cup final 3-2 to West Germany, a team they demolished 8-3 in the group stages only a few weeks before. An attack spearheaded by Ferenc Puskas made them a difficult team to defend against. However things of late have not been rosy for Hungary with them failing to qualify for a major tournament since 1986.

I have been hired as the unanimous choice to bring back the glory days of old, where a team was feared the world over.

    FA Expectations
I have asked to be competitive in the remaining Qualifiers, with 3rd place all but guaranteed

    Qualifying Group E

I will be using this more as preperation for the World Cup Qualifiers

    Current World Ranking: 45th

My 1st game in charge was a friendly against Iceland
    Hungary 1-1 Iceland
A bit of a cagey affair but happy enough with the result

    Hungary 0-3 Sweden
A one sided match we were never expected to win

    Moldova 0-3 Hungary

A comfortable win for my 1st victory as the Manager

    Hungary 4-3 Finland
Two wins out of two, a tenser match as we went behind twice before winning in the end

    Qualifying Group E final Table

A respectable looking 3rd place so something to build on for the future

    Poland 4-2 Hungary
Final match of the year ended in disappointment, despite dominating the defence let the team down with lapses in concentration

    2011 Team of the Year

    Current World Ranking: 52nd(-7)

    Code:
    Year	| Games	| Win	| Draw	| Lose	| GF	| GA	|

A couple of Friendly results before the World Cup Qualifying begins

    Hungary 2-2 Bulgaria
A fairly evenly matched contest, finishing could've been slightly better but no real complaints

    Hungary 1-1 Scotland
Lucky enough to get a draw from this match, but hopefully I can remain unbeaten through the year

    World Cup Qualifying Group 4
A decent draw for the Magyars, Andorra and Estonia should be full points and If I can win at home against Turkey and Romania I should have a chance of finishing 2nd behind the Dutch

Not a bad WC group, definitly possible to get 2nd but Hungary dont have much quality in the side.

    2014 - World Cup Qualifiers

    Estonia 0-2 Hungary
A comfortable performance to get the campaign underway

    Hungary 4-1 Andorra
Struggled to find the net in the 1st half but ran out convincing winners

    Romania 3-2 Hungary
Came from 2 behind to draw level before conceding late on

    Hungary 2-2 Turkey
Fortunate enough to get a point from this game

    Latest Qualifying Table
So currently sitting third but only 2 points off the pace

    Friendlies
    Norway 4-2 Hungary
Defence posted missing for most of the match

    Hungary 2-2 Czech Republic
Looking like we were going to win our last match of the year but conceded very late

    2013

2013 started with a friendly and a chance to test out a new tactic

    Hungary 1-3 Serbia
Serbia raced to a 3-0 lead after 14 minutes and the tactic seemed to be failing, but then the team clicked so decided to persevere with it

    World Cup Qualifiers
    Hungary 0-1 Holland
A close match that should've ended in at least a draw

    Hungary 1-0 Estonia
    The scoreline flattered Estonia

    Friendly
    Russia 2-0 Hungary
Outclassed and outplayed should've been a bigger margin of defeat

    Latest Qualifying Table
Really need to beat Romania and Turkey to stand any chance

    Domestic News
Two teams made the Group stage of the Europa League but both finished last and well off the pace.
The best facilities in Hungary are Average but most clubs have Basic so no real prospects anytime soon I think

That is a really tough job, no talent, no youth foundations, some expectations, and nothing you can do to build extra talent. All you can do is try to grind out results through tactics and hope for the best...

Forgot to mention that the Hungarian Division 1 is currently 49th ranked up 18 places from 67th, and the coefficients is currently 28th so Money from Europe for the clubs is not going to be easy to come by.

    2014 World Cup Qualifiers

    Andorra 1-2 Hungary

Needed a penalty to avoid this potential banana skin

    Hungary 2-5 Romania

Down 2-0 and to 10 men so wasn't surprised at the outcome, qualification no longer a possibility now

    Turkey 3-1 Hungary
    Outclassed by a stronger team

    Holland 2-1 Hungary
Flattered by the scoreline as 10 man Holland dominate

    Final Qualification Table

    Final Friendly
    Macedonia 1-6 Hungary
Moral boosting win to end the year

    2013 Team of the Year

    Current World Ranking: 88th(-22)

    Managers Summary
Well a bit of a disappointing year in charge of Hungary, My attempt to have an attacking formation like the team of the 50's has backfired the team has slumped to its lowest ranking ever. The FA were pleased that I was competitive though, but they do want improvement otherwise I'll be replaced. So I now have a few friendlies before the Euro's Qualification to test out a more conservative tactic.

    Pre-qualifying Friendlies

Some moral boosting friendlies to test out the new tactic

    Hungary 1-0 Belarus
Evenly matched but scored the only goal

    Hungary 3-0 Luxembourg

    Starting to show dominance

    Hungary 3-0 Liechtenstein
    Another easy victory

    Hungary 2-0 Kyrgyzstan
Finishing could've been better but overall pleased

My Assistant retired so I appointed recently retired Hungarian Star Zoltan Gera as my new number 2

The qualifying group for the Euros gives me a good chance

    Qualifying group C

You're not gonna get an easier group than that, Greece and Norway are still stronger but it's now or never. It's quite tight though, you could very easily end up 1st or last. Do both 1st and 2nd placed go through to the Euros? (it's the first edition of the 24-team Euros).

Any regens worth considering a call-up by now or is this still too early?

Top two automatically qualify and there are playoffs between 3rd placed teams so should have a good chance, no newgens looking that good yet, but a couple of cameroonians got citizenship so I called 1 up and he went off injured after 10 mins so hasn't been seen in the national team since

    Going Backwards

A terrible year for Hungary as results just wouldn't come

    Friendly

    Ukraine 1-0 Hungary
Overrun all over the park, the scoreline flattered the Magyars

    Qualifier
    Hungary 3-0 Macedonia
A must win in which the team duly delivered to keep hopes of France alive

    Friendly
    Israel 1-3 Hungary
A good win which was marred by 2 key players getting knocks ruling them out of a crucial match

    Qualifier
    Hungary 0-2 Cyprus
Hopes of qualification left in tatters after a bad performance

    Friendly
    Hungary 0-0 Denmark
The team show more fight against stronger opponents

    Qualifiers
    Greece 2-1 Hungary
An early goal had me believing that we could take all 3 points but the Greeks fought back stronger to win

    Hungary 3-4 Norway
Took the lead 3 times but the Scandinavians wanted it more

    Macedonia 3-3 Hungary
Conceded in injury time to plunge the Magyars into 4th place

    Final Qualification Table

    Friendlies
    Hungary 3-1 Slovenia
    A comfortable victory

    Sweden 5-0 Hungary
A lesson in how not to defend

    2015 Team of the Year

    Current World Ranking: 73rd(-10)

To answer jcoll's question this is the closest to any decent player coming through the Hungarian clubs
    Istvan Racz
He might get a call up in the near future purely based on his acceleration

    Managers Summary
Disasterous year and was surprised that the Hungarian FA were happy that I was competitive in Qualifiers, may have to resort to a basic tactic to try and get some pride back

Thats what I thought, but even if I managed to finish 3rd I think I would've had too little an amount of points to get the play-offs

I'll be happy with 15 points from the group.

You'll get into the Euros eventually, with 24 (of about 50?) teams in every year.

Much better season here, 3rd in that group given the lack of talent available is quite good actually, but unfortunately you'd need further improvements if you're to lead Hungary back to a major international competition. Last time was the 1986 World Cup I believe?

Yeah there isn't much talent coming through either with no improvements to clubs facilities at all during this save, I also keep getting informed that only 57% of players in the league are Hungarian Nationals so that doesn't help. 1986 is correct I mention it in the opening blurb, was hoping I qualified for Euro 2016 to end 30 years of Hurt!!

Just got the draw for the Qualifying for Euro 2020 in Belgium

    Qualifying group A

If I don't finish 3rd at least in this group I'll probably get sacked

Qualification was looking a certainty after beating Poland away, but I've just lost 1-0 to San Marino to leave my hopes hanging in the balance with 4 games to go

    2019 - Hungary Expects

    Friendly
    Hungary 0-1 Turkey
Close match but the Turks got their revenge

    Qualifiers
    Poland 1-2 Hungary
A big victory for Hungary, creating a bit of breathing space and making qualification look almost certain

    Hungary 2-3 France
France edged this thrilling game, but as they are favourites to win the group no real surprises

    San Marino 1-0 Hungary
A result that surely echoed over the globe, Hit the woodwork 3 times and was constantly knocking at the door but San Marino pulled off a great win, Poland beat France and qualification looks precarious at the moment

    Friendly
    Hungary 1-1 Cyprus
A good game to clear the cobwebs before the final rounds of qualification

    Qualifiers
    Hungary 7-0 Andorra
Great result and the more goals we score the better incase it comes down to difference

    Albania 0-4 Hungary
Another big win for us as we sit 2nd on goal difference

    Hungary 2-0 Poland

The players were really fired up for this game and dominated from start to finish, Qualification was confirmed after this result as we had a better head to head

    France 3-0 Hungary
Completely outclassed by the French, who I seem to have drawn again in the World Cup Qualifiers

    Final Qualification Table

Hungary Qualify for the 2020 European Championships in Belgium
We have been drawn in Group D against Germany, Russia and France(seems to be the team I get drawn against all the time)

    Friendlies
    Hungary 2-2 Latvia
Gave a defender his 1st cap to test him out and he gave away a penalty so not sure if he’ll be selected for Belgium

    Hungary 3-3 Slovakia
Pleased with the fighting spirit to come back from 2 goals down but the defence really needs to improve before the tournament

    2020 - Pre-Tournament Friendlies

    Malta 0-1 Hungary
Created several chances but couldn't find the killer instinct in front of goal

    Hungary 1-0 Moldova
Again the finishing was awful, our defence played well as Moldova didn't have a shot at goal

    Hungary 1-1 Macedonia

Another hatful of chances but finishing again is woeful

    Hungary 4-0 Luxembourg
Finally found that scoring feeling which had been missing in other games

    Manager's Thoughts for the tournament
Well I'm not confident after the poor finishing in the friendlies, at best I can hope for a result against Russia, Germany will no doubt beat us and I hope to keep the scoreline respectable in our 1st game against France

    Euro 2020 - Belgium - Group Match 1

So our familiar foes France are up 1st in the Championships, and we start brightly trying to take the game to them, both teams are playing well but neither can break down the others defence to have any real chances in the 1st half

    Half-Time : Hungary 0-0 France

    Match Stats
    Hungary Player Stats

The 2nd half started pretty much the same as the 1st with both teams trying to find a way through, as the Hungarian legs started to tire Mbiwa pounced on a chance for France on the 69th minute to put them in front, after that they seemed comfortable to keep possession as the game closed out.

    Full-Time: Hungary 0-1 France

    Match Stats
    Hungary Players Stats

    Current Group Table

So defeat in the 1st game but a respectable performance, hopefully the next match against Russia will be more rewarding.

    Euro 2020 - Belgium - Group Match 2

Russia is the next team on the agenda and we'll be looking for a victory in this match, the match started at a hectic pace and that quick speed enabled us to hit them on the break with Racz scoring an easy tap in, both teams went in the hunt for the next goal but as half time approached it wasn't coming

    Half-Time : Russia 0-1 Hungary

    Match Stats
    Hungary Player Stats

The 2nd half was another of high paced play as Hungary went searching for the cushion goal while Russia searched for an equaliser but some great goalkeeping at both ends meant the score wouldn't change

    Full-Time: Russia 0-1 Hungary

    Match Stats
    Hungary Players Stats

    Current Group Table

So the final game against Germany approaches and a draw may be enough to reach the second otherwise we could be coming home.

    Euro 2020 - Belgium - Group Match 3

Germany who had all but qualified with 2 wins out of 2 were our final match where we were hoping to take something from the game, unfortunately they were far too strong for us and took the lead in the 16th minute, before doubling it on the 38th.

    Half-Time : Hungary 0-2 Germany

    Match Stats
    Hungary Player Stats

We started the 2nd half with more vibrancy looking to take something from the game and were rewarded in the 68th minute to get ourselves back in the game, but with 10 minutes remaining out Keeper was off his line and a superb chip from 25 yards out restored the Germans 2 goal advantage
    Full-Time: Hungary 1-3 Germany

    Match Stats
    Hungary Players Stats

    Final Group Table

Remarkably enough that win against Russia was enough to qualify us for the 2nd round where we will meet Holland.

Congrats! Quite lucky to get through with 3 points but definitely deserve it after beating Poland in the qualifiers (twice!) now Russia in the Euros! That's a very big break for hungarian football.

    Euro 2020 - Belgium - 2nd Round

Holland were our opponents for the 2nd round match, and despite being the better team we couldn't find a way through so we finished the half goaless

    Half-Time : Holland 0-0 Hungary

    Match Stats
    Hungary Player Stats

The 2nd half was going pretty much the same as the 1st until the Referee decided to show his 1st card of the match, a red one at that, in the 54th minute. This changed the whole complexion of the game and Holland started knocking at the door, and we rewarded soon after. A dodgy penalty was given against us but our keeper saved it to keep the tie alive, but no team could find anymore and so it finished with the one goal and Hungary were out

    Full-Time: Holland 1-0 Hungary

    Match Stats
    Hungary Players Stats

So Hungary go out in the second round, I was very pleased with the way the team performed, and now we can concentrate on the World Cup Qualifiers.

    2020 - A New Horizon?

    World Cup Qualifiers
    France 8-2 Hungary
    Nothing to say except SPANKED!

    Hungary 2-0 San Marino

    A comfortable win

    Serbia 5-2 Hungary
Another heavy defeat, the team appears to be going backwards

    Hungary 5-0 Faroe Islands
A big win which is needed to reduce the goal deficit

    Latest Qualifying Table

    Friendlies
    Hungary 1-2 Ireland
Threw away the lead, due to lack of finishing

    Hungary 2-3 Scotland
Two goals up and threw it away again

    2020 Team of the Year

So Hungary appear to have slipped backwards in fabulous fashion, the chances of qualifying are all but dead and if the results carry on like that so might my job

Are you trying to outscore the opposition? It's unlikely to work against those big sides, why not playing cautiously and on the counter?

    2021

    Friendly
    Finland 4-1 Hungary
Poor finishing and poor defending let me down

    Qualifiers
    Hungary 3-0 Iceland
    Good victory in this match

    Hungary 1-3 France
Still a big gulf in class between the nations

Good win for the team after the French disappointment

    Hungary 0-1 Austria
Again finishing really needs to be better

    Qualifiers
    San Marino 0-7 Hungary
A great win for my 100th game in charge

    Hungary 2-2 Serbia
Should've won this match but the opposition injured 2 key players inside the 1st 13 minutes

    Faroe Islands 1-3 Hungary

A routine victory now that qualification is dead

    Iceland 2-2 Hungary
This result shows have far back were dropping

    Final Qualification Table

    Friendlies
    Luxembourg 0-7 Hungary
This is the sort of result I expect against teams of this calibre

    2023 - Europe Awaits?

    Friendly
    Hungary 2-0 Estonia
A good win to start off the year

    Qualifiers
    Armenia 4-4 Hungary
Proved to be a stronger team than I had estimated, lucky to get anything from this game

    Scotland 1-0 Hungary

A close match but Scotland scored the only goal of the game to put qualification on a knife edge.

    Sweden 1-1 Hungary
Injury time equaliser saves a point for the Magyars and keeps Sweden within 2 points

    Friendly
    Hungary 3-2 Bulgaria
Defence had a bad game allowing an average team to breach them twice

    Qualifiers
    Hungary 6-1 Montenegro
A big win as Sweden lose to Scotland to place Hungary in 2nd place

    Luxembourg 1-5 Hungary
The goals keep coming as the team is looking stronger and stronger

    Hungary 5-1 Armenia

Another great performance from the front men, as Hungary qualify for Spain

    Hungary 2-1 Scotland
A big victory against the Scots

    Final Qualification Table

    Friendly
    Hungary 2-2 Turkey
A good result against slightly better opposition

    Hungary Qualify for Spain 2024

    The Draw for the Finals

So only 1 defeat in the last 2 years now for Hungary

Very well done there not just for qualifying but for beating Sweden in the group too. Top 30 in the World Rankings is a very nice achievement too.

Cheers Guys, I'm hoping the higher ranking will bring a few more better youths through the clubs.
As far as the championships are concerned I fully expect to beat Poland so a draw in either of the other 2 games should put me through to the 2nd round

Hi Jimbowmanuk, great idea to try and bring the Magyars back, it has been an interesting read.

I had been toying with this concept myself for some time and decided to give it a go some weeks ago, albeit with a somewhat different approach: Start as a club-manager and earn myself the national team job. In parallel I'd invest in my club team's youth infrastructure and improve the quality of Hungarian regens. I currently can't get around to continue that save as I found Hungarian teams just bleed money with no chance of improving infrastructure in the first years.

Sorry if I overread: Did you load the Hungarian League? Can you see some positive changes there?
Any regens you consider an improvement compared to your original bunch apart from Racz?

Cheers CRM, yes I loaded the Hungarian League and Debrecen seem to be reaching the group stage of European competitions most seasons, but usually finish last. Also they keep breaking their attendance figures each season but are yet to put any of this wealth into their facilities. I've got a good selection of strikers that seem slightly better than the old core but the rest of the positions seem to be lacking in any real quality coming through.

Yeah but I'm hopeful that I beat Poland by a big enough score to qualify for the 2nd round and an easy draw

You've done well with Hungary! The next stages may be tough, but this is still a great achievement.

    2024 - Pre-Tournament Friendlies

    Slovakia 4-0 Hungary
The worst possible start to the year, just couldn't get the team to perform

    Hungary 2-2 Denmark
Disappointing draw where they scored all 4 goals

    Hungary 0-4 Croatia
Again spanked by a team I felt we should have played better against

    Hungary 5-4 Ukraine
Pleased with the win but in reality if Racz didn't have his shooting boots on we would have been beaten heavily

    Euro 2024 - Spain - Group Match 1

Poland up 1st and I'm fully expecting 3 points from this match, we were the better team through out the half creating better chances but just couldn't get the breakthrough

    Half-Time : Poland 0-0 Hungary

    Match Stats
    Hungary Player Stats

The 2nd half must've been quite boring for the neutral fan and with the game heading for a draw, Defender Otigba decided to slice down a Pole in the area giving away a penalty and getting himself sent off. The worst part of it being deep in injury time.

    Full-Time: Poland 1-0 Hungary

    Current Group Table

So defeat in the 1st game and unless there is a miracle against either Italy or Holland then I'm sorry to say that Hungary are going home early

    Euro 2024 - Spain - Group Match 2

Well we managed to hold the Italians at bay for all of 5 minutes, and it was all one way traffic

    Half-Time : Hungary 0-2 Italy

    Match Stats
    Hungary Player Stats

Italy were searching for more goals but they just couldn't get a breakthrough, then we scored to give us a small chance of a point but another never came

    Full-Time: Hungary 1-2 Italy

    Match Stats
    Hungary Player Stats

    Current Group Table

An Expected defeat but with Holland beating Poland, we could still qualify if we beat them

    Euro 2024 - Spain - Group Match 3

The superior finishing of the Dutch had this tie dead and buried by half time

    Half-Time : Hungary 0-3 Holland

We tried to get back into the game in the second half but to no avail

Yeah but the year as a whole has not been good so far. Hoping that the World Cup Qualifiers don't go the same way

Bit of a disappointing tournament but it's still an obvious encouraging trend to have qualified for the last 2 Euros. Keep on pushing with the Magyars.
