England going out of tournaments - normally a fine line

2010 aside, it's not very often we take a hammering is it?

I can remember back as far as 96.

Euro 96 - out on penalties (Semi-final)

World Cup 98 - out on penalties (Second round)

Euro 2000 - out at Group stage

World Cup 2002 - 2-1 defeat (Quarter-final)

Euro 2004 - out on penalties (Quarter-final)

World Cup 2006 - out on penalties (Quarter-final)

Euro 2012 - out on penalties (Quarter-final)

I mean you know, fine line between the quarter final hoodoo and making several semis.

We'd have made 1 final, 1 more quarter final and three semi-finals just if the shoot-outs went our way.

What's worse, our inability to keep possession (which is obviously still a major issue) or what seems to be a mental problem for our players?
