December 2013 Update



FC Anji Makhachkala - SOGAZ Prem'er Liga

Bit of a different monthly update as the SOGAZ Prem'er Liga takes a break until March 2014. However, we still have the Europa League!

UEFA Europa League

Tying Salzburg was a bit of a let down, but I believe the boys were just tired over the busy fall. We rebounded nicely against Amiens in a dominant win.

We finish a couple of points behind Olympiacos. That draw against Salzburg hurt us, but nonetheless, we still qualify and move on to the knockout stages.

We've drawn the German club, Schalke, for our 1st Knockout match. The draw could have been nicer to us, but we'll just have to make do. The match won't happen until the end of February 2014, so he are now in a 2 month lull. A few friendlies and the change to heal all wounds before the league's home stretch.

Our winter break gave us some time to play a few friendlies, rest some players, and heal some injuries.

UEFA Europa League

This was expected to be a tight affair with Schalke succeeding. I think we showed Europe that were'not done yet. The first match was great, including a goal for Alzáte, a new transfer on his first match. He came off the bench with 20 minutes to go for his first senior goal ever anywhere. The second match was not difficult. We won with a good run from André who sped by all on a brilliant individual effort.

Luis Alzáte - M/AM R - Alzáte joined us at the opening of the transfer window from Colombian club, Medellin on a free transfer. He was impressive in the friendlies and came off the bench in the first Schalke game for his 1st goal. He's already a $6M rated player.

Managerial Thoughts

The season starts up again right away. We'll have to deal with a busy schedule as we also have the Europa League and the Rambler Kubok Rossii Cup all to go. I believe we can win the league and I wouldn't mind the Russian cup as well. As for the Europa League, one round at a time.

Kerimov Looking to Leave Anji

In a stunning announcement, Kerimov, Chairman of Anji Makhachkala, has stated his intention to step down. While no reason has been offered, it is expected the club continuing financial woes are to blame. Anji currently sit in 1st in the Russian Prem'er Liga. They are also involved in the Europa League and Kubok Rossii.

I actually got a couple decent strikers in the mix. They'll go nicely in my non-existant youth squad.

Mikhail Gusev - AM RL, ST - Gusev has some decent physical stats for the 15 year old. Hopefull he can improve the rest.

Sergey Martazanov - ST - Apparently an aerial master! No pace, so that's a little annoying, but if he can improve some, he is a likely contender for at least a backup spot in a few years.

Said Abdulaev Takes Over as Chairman of Anji

Former director Said Abdulaev is welcoming his new role as Chairman of Anji. However, in speaking to media earlier today, he remarked on the financial situation that is plaguing the club.

"We have much to do at Anji. A business cannot function when it is losing this much money each and every month. Something must be done." -Chairman Abdulaev

The move has left financial experts puzzled. In an odd first order of business, Abdulaev has cancelled all links with other clubs, including one with England's Tottenham Hotspur, which was bringing money into the club. He has also balanced the current financial siutation with a new $33M bank loan. This now increases Anji's total loan debt to $160M with monthly payments estimated around $930K.

One analyst exclaimed, "Did Abdulave learn about fiscal responsibility from the Lehman Brothers?!?!"

In other news, current manager Cerud has been asked to remain at his job. No managerial changes are imminent.

Yeah, so this new Chairman isn't a savior. He's a power hungry village idiot. I may just finish the season and look for a new job. This club is a one way ticket to bankruptcy.

March 2014 Update

SOGAZ Prem'er Liga

A triumphant return to the league. This was pretty much the only good thing of this month. Spartak Moscow gave us a few problems, but other than that, this was us playing our game against easier opposition. We should have won all these matches and we did. Simple as that.

Rambler Kubok Rossii and UEFA Europa League

Both the Kubok Rossii and the Europa League kind of need to be described together because their matches were so close to each other. Going into the first match against Lille in the Europa League, we looked good...until my starting goalkeeper injuried himself in training and was ruled out for 10 days. That spanned the entirety of these 3 matches. On top of this, my backup goalkeeper was not registered for the Europa League because of the limitations of homegrown players. I had to use a 16 year old prospect in net.

To the match. Our goalkeeper couldn't match up. On top of that Lille injured both my top strikers, Eto'o and André in the first 14 minutes. I was also awarded 9 yellow cards and 1 red (a record for me!). Even the end match report talked about the bias of the referee. I just don't have luck in big games and refs, I guess.

The Kubok Rossii meant I could use my backup goalkeeper, but I didn't have my two best strikers. In fact, out of my three strkers, one was healthy. On a normal day, Krasnodar should be easy to beat. They dominated us.

The return match with Lille was better. We had Eto'o back, albeit not ready for a full match. We made it close, but were unable to get the final goal to send it to extra time.

So basically between the 13 and 24 of March 2014, we exited the Europa League, the Kubok Rossii, and got a new Chairman that made a deal that would have made Shylock in the Merchant of Venice sit down and cry.

The Standings

At least we're doing great in the league! We have qualified for the Champions League and look to solidify our top spot sometime next month. However, I am having serious doubts about staying another year. Yes, we have made the Champions League, but the impending wage cuts will mean I will have no players to play in it. I'll finish this season and then re-evaluate.

The loss to Zenit put off the inevitable. We ended up winning the league with a win against Ural. So, with 3 matches left to go, we are finished as the champions of the Prem'er Liga!

The Standings

I had thought that it would end up in a bit of a fight to the finish between us and CSKA Moscow. However, CSKA has fallen hard, giving away matches for free to other clubs. Rubin have moved comfortably ahead of them with 3 matches to go. As for me, I'm strongly considering a move away in the off-season. I have no idea where, so long as they are financially viable.

Cerud Reaches 200 Matches on Final Game of Season

The upcoming match against Rubin will mark Cerud's 200 game as a manager. So far, his career has seen him in Brazil, Costa Rica, and Russia. However, rumours have been circulating that this eventful match may also be his final match with Anji. It has been well publicized that Cerud and newly appointed Chairman Abdulaev disagree on the future of the club. Both have denied any damaged relationship and have pledged to continue along with Anji's title winning season.

1st Place - League Title Winners

The League

Standings | Past Positions | Fixtures - It was a very good year in the league. We ended up winning with a large point lead, 12 points. Other clubs didn't manage the home stretch as well as we did. We had our own problems, but they were in other competitions and not the league. This also awarded us $10M in prize money, always an asset.

The Cups

Rambler Kubok Rossii - We disappointed in this competition to only make the quarter finals. Our Board wanted at least a semi final finish.

UEFA Europa League - We did better in the Europa League; however, injuries and registration issues with our goalkeepers hurt us in the end.

The Players

Squad | Transfers - The squad is good and will last for a while, but they cost too much. It will definitely need some trimming from foreign players and a few lower cost domestic Russians brought in.

Hosny - DM, M LC - Our Egyptian midfielder is wanted by several other clubs. He led our club in assists in all competitions and contributed goals as well.

Carlos André - ST - André came from my former club, Santo André. I was hoping that he would continue to dominate in front of the net and he didn't disappoint. He only played a part of the season, but was 2nd in goals only behind Eto'o/

Samuel Eto'o - AM L, ST - Team leader in goals and a dominant presence on the pitch. I was lucky to be able to resign him, especially for the wage cuts that he agreed to.

The Backroom

Finances - Well, we were horrible and now we're flush! The Board just injected $21.5M, which helps. However, they have also lowered our wage budget for next year, meaning I have to cut $9M worth of wages out of the squad.

Facilities - They're upgrading the youth facilities. The move to the new stadium in still a few years off, but I'm not sure why they thought they needed it anyway.

Honestly, I don't know right now. The club now has $70M in the bank, but they will lose about $6M each month. With the ticket prices at a mere $5.20, there is no logical way to lower the wage budget unless I have only two players and a backroom staff of just me. It may be time to move on, but if the Board is willing to bankrupt themselves for the sake of the club....no idea what to do.

Cerud Leaves Anji on a High

We saw it coming. No one can deny otherwise. Canadian-born manager Cerud, in a press conference today in Moscow, confirmed his exit with Anji. It has been well publicized in Russian media that Cerud was unhappy with several moves by Said Abdulaev, the club's new chairman and while the club is on financially stable grounds at the moment, the impending need to cut players and staff was a main source of contention between Chair and former manager. Speaking to media, Cerud stated,

"Anji offered me my first opportunity to manage in Europe and I won't forget that success that we brought to this club. However, success requires more than a single season. I wish all the best to whomever takes the reigns at Anji."

It is rumoured that under his breath, Cerud further said, "They will need it."

This was not an easy decision. I know that I could have stayed and probably won another league title and possibly a decent run in the Champions League before I really had to start worrying and begin to dismantle the club. But that's not what I want. I want a club that I can manage effectively and to have a Chairman that understands his job. That's wasn't going to happen here. And so, I move on. No idea where I'll end up, but I won't be just sitting on my ass for long!

Cerud Garnering Interest in the Netherlands

It seems as though Cerud won't be out of a job for long. The Canadian manager has emerged as the early frontrunner to take over sc Heerenveen after the sacking of Fred Rutten. Cerud stated that managing in the Netherlands for such a respectable club is exactly the kind of challenge that he was looking for.

"Heerenveen has been a well managed club, both on the pitch and by their Board. It's about time that they brought in some silverware to go along with their success in the Eredivisie. To be attached to such a club is an honour and a challenge that I would definitely consider."

sc Heerenveen and Cerud Reach Agreement

Today, sc Heerenveen Chairman Robert Veenstra welcomed Cerud as the new manager of the Dutch club. Cerud spoke to media at a joint press conference, where he reiterated his enthusiam for working in the Netherlands, paying special attention to the quality of the squad in place, the financial prudence of the club's Board and Directors, and the legacy to the club in general.

"I have great respect for sc Heerenveen and look forward to bringing success to the club. When I look at the club, I see one that has always been on the cusp of being something great. I can tell they all want it. They have tasted Champions League football and are desperate to get back there one day. However, that also means domestic success. The KNVB Beker Cup has been won before and it can be again. So too can the Eredivisie."

Cerud will meet with the current backroom staff later today.

sc Heerenveen - Eredivisie

I have signed a two year contract at $425 000/year. It's a significant pay cut from what I was making at Anji, but the viability of the club won out in the end. I am now at a club that I believe is on sound footing and will give me a place from where I can better grow my reputation.

About the Club

sc Heerenveen was founded in 1920. After playing in regional and lower national football for decades, they finally won promotion to the Eredivisie for the first time in 1990. They were the first Frisian club to ever reach this height in Dutch football. Relegation came quick and saw them drop back down only to fight back and rejoin the top flight again in 1993.

From here on, they began to build as an Eredivisie club. Their highest even finish came in 2000 with a 2nd place finish and a spot in the UEFA Champions League. In 2009, they won their first and only major trophy, the KNVB Cup, the main domestic cup in the Netherlands.

I've tried to be financially prudent, not going after every player that I want and trying to work within the budgets that have been set. So far, so good. The squad is coming aloso nicely. I was also able to get rid of the majoirty of reserve players who would never have a hope in playing first squad football. The Board initially only wanted a midtable finish, but I believe that we can and must push for more. We need to expect more from ourselves, which is why I want to make the European Places Playoff. That's at least an 8th place finish.

Spain Wins Consecutive World Cups!

It took penalties to make it final, but Spain have triumphed in winning their second FIFA World Cup in a row. A concerted effort by Fernando Liorente gave Spain all the firepower they required; however, Argentina did not go easily into the dark. The Spanish striker also won a spot on the Dream Team.

The next World Cup will be held in Russia in 2018.

The Players

Squad | Transfers - We made a few changes, mainly bringing in strength up front in strikers and depth in defense. The difference transfers also netted us approximately $600K.

Thomas Kaminski - GK - I wasn't expecting to sign a new goalkeeper. I was figuring that I'd use the guy I had now. However, Kaminski is younger and much better. I was also able to sell my former keeper for more money than Kaminski cost.

José Contreras - D/WB/M RL - Contreras recently played his last three seasons with FC Utrecht in the Eredivisie as a starter. I needed a leftback and he's our guy. He was solid for FC Utrecht and I was happy to get him on a free.

Cayfano Latupeirissa - ST - Latupeirissa was my first signing for the club. He comes from 2. Bundesliga's Paderborn, where he was underused. I can assume you that he will be much more effective with us.

Pre-Season Thoughts

The pre-season went well. Most of the other teams we played were close to our calibre, either a little lower or little higher. I was happy with solid wins against BATE and FC Oss. The loss to Standard was disappointing, but we have quickly become tactically sound and are well prepared for the Eredivisie.

I'm also happy with the squad as it stands. I expect a couple potential moves in January, but nothing substantial. I think was have a squad that can push up the table. Now to do it.

August 2014 Update

This is still going to be a tough league. I was happy to bounce with with a good win after our loss to AZ. Our main problem, as was in Brazil, is defense. However, half of our goals against came from the one match. I'm hoping that once we get into the season a few months, things will settle down a bit.

The Standings

It's still very early, but we're on the right trach. I'm hoping for at least an 8th place finish in order to qualify for the playoffs at the end. However, the better we do now, the better our chances for European football will be next year.

I was attached to a few job in France's Ligue 1, but when I stated an interest, they laughed me off. sc Heerenveen came calling and so did the Kaizer Cheifs in South Africa and a club from Israel. This was the best choice. Also, I wanted a club with sound financial backing. This club knows how to be practical; whereas Anji didn't. It may not be the biggest club I could have gone to, but I can still grow something here, get them their first title and hopefully more before I move on to bigger and better

It was a short month, only two league matches in total due to international commitments. However, we won two cleansheet performances and have begun our move towards a strong position. We are still in the hunt for more too; just because we are higher than 8th place doesn't mean we only want to hold onto what we got. We will push for more.

KNVB Beker Cup

Our first match in the KNVB was another good performance, ensuring that we were not scored on in the entire month of September in all competitions. Almere City is a Jupiler League team, a league below us.

The Standings

We are still in 6th place, but are maintaining a close proximity to the higher clubs. It will difficult to break into that group. They are strong. We also haven't played any of them yet, so I don't really know what to expect.

We have also received our expectations from the Board for the KNVB Beker Cup.

Cerud Making a Name for Himself in Netherlands

Not even half a season into his first campaign, and Cerud has already attracted the interest of other well known Dutch clubs. Alex Pastoor has been fired by AZ and Cerud is the first name on Chairman Erwin Drost's list as a replacement. However, given sc Heerenveen's record as of late, Cerud may wish to stay where he is.

Well, it began as a good month. However, PSV put brought us back down to reality. We have been progressing up the table, but we were no match for the defending title champions. We didn't play well, but it probably wouldn't have mattered as they took the match to us right from the beginning. To call it a bloodbath is being nice. We were slaughtered by a much better club.

KNVB Beker Cup

Unfortunately, our match against PSV was immediately followed by our next KNVB match. It took us 30 minutes of extra time to finally put down Telstar, a team that we should be winning against easily. Hopefully, morale is at least improved from the win.

The Standings

Regardless of that humbling loss, we have moved into 2nd place in the standings, albeit tied with PSV. This next month will be difficult though as we face Ajax and Vitesse in back to back matches. I'd take ties in each, just to maintain morale, hopefully eke out a win in one of them. Crazy that those 6 goals scored against us by PSV are almost half of the total against us.

November 2014 Update

This has been one of the more odd months of my football career. We began with Vitesse. By the 15th minute, I was down to 9 men on the pitch due to 5 injuries. I even had to substitute two players at the same time from injury, which I've never been forced to do before. Unfortunately, one of those injured was my starting goalkeeper, now out with a broken finger for 6-7 weeks.

We were able to handle Feyenoord, but Ajax destroyed us. We looked as though we were in awe of them. They were up 3-0 by the 7th minute. Didn't help that my backup goalkeeper is only rated at one star. Then, at the end of the match, I told one of my defenders that I was unhappy with his efforts, given that he ended with a 4.7 rating. Instantly, my entire squad was listed as "seems confused". Confused!?!? This players has an own goal and gave up another one on a horrible pass. So, I decided that a team meeting was in order. I stated that I was happy how we had been doing, but I felt we could do even better. This was based on 3 losses in 5 matches. That didn't go over well, with one of my players calling the meeting "a waste of time". I'm really not endearing myself here.

We ended on a positive note with two wins, but the responses of my squad to me is making me wonder if I made the wrong decision in coming here.

The Standings

We're stilling 3rd place, understandably behind Ajax and PSV. The season is almost half done and I am happy with the record we have. I'm not sure how we can crack those two higher teams. I've tried to encourage my Board to expand out stadium as we are selling out most matches. However, they don't believe that it's necessary. I'll keep trying as the option is offered, because we could really use the added gate receipts.

sc Heerenveen Commit to Youth

Both Chairman Veenstra and club manager Cerud were on hand today to discuss a new youth initiative. The club has announced a $6.25M upgrade to their youth facilities as well as a renewed effort to their junior program. Cerud has been quoted before stating a commitment to local youth development in order to grow the club.

The youth facilities are currently listed as Average and upgrading will begin once the season is completed. Junior coaching has gone from Average to Good.

A good month for us to get back on track. We should have won the FC Oss match, but a tie still gave us 7 of a possible 9 points.

KNVB Beker Cup

We jumped to a very early lead and were looking good to hold on. However, 7 yellow cards and 1 red card later, that lead went away and we just couldn't hold on. We were very undisciplined and unfortunately deserved to lose.

The Standings

We're one match past the halfway mark and sitting in 4th Place, only 1 point behind 2nd place Vitesse. I was aiming for a top 8 finish at the beginning of the season; however, I'd now enjoy a top 3 finish. Our progression through the first half tells me that it is possible. I am looking for a couple players in the upcoming transfer window, ideally a centreback and striker. Hopefully, I can find what I'm looking for.

We also have a bit of a break until 20 January 2015. So, a few friendlies will keep us fit until then.

January 2015 Update

We started the new year with a great win against AZ. Our new striker, Torghelle, also got a goal on his debut and set up a couple more. However, he ended up fracturing his arm in the second match and is now out for 5 weeks. As Kurt Vonnegut would say, "So it goes..."

Transfers

I wanted a centreback and striker and I got them.

Jerry Akaminko - D RC - Akaminko was recently with FC Midjylland in the Danish Superligaen. I paid $1.4M for him, a bit more than I wanted, but he's still young and is able to mentor.

Sándor Torghelle - ST - He's older at 32, but still very good for this league. He's spent several years in Hungary with Videoton, but he was looking to move up and probably find a place to retire. He was cheap at $170K, can mentor, and once his fractured arm heals, he'll be ready to go.

The Standings

Still in 4th place. This will be a tough group to break into as all of these clubs have strong records. All I need is one win against these clubs and that would push me ahead to them. I will at least get a chance in February as we play Ajax. Either elation or humiliation, not sure which.

Aris have sacked Giannis Papakostas and Chairman Vasilis Tsavalos has publically named sc Heerenveen manager Cerud as his desired replacement to lift the club out from their current slump. However, it is unlikely that Cerud is willing to leave as his Dutch club is performing well in their table.

The Standings

We have moved within 6 points to top spot. I think Mikal was right; we are letting in too many goals. Our new centreback is working well, but we may need to look at bringing in some support on the back end. If cut out a few more goals against, that could be the difference we need.

Cerud has tactfully remained noncommital, likely due to his former ties with Anji. sc Heerenveen maintains a good position in the Dutch table and it is likely that Cerud will remain where he is.

Our record was enough to keep us in the hunt for those top spots, but the real bonus was in getting back-to-back wins against PSV and Vitesse. The PSV match was great to watch. We played them to the outside where they weren't able to get any decent shots. Everything was long range and easily handled. In the offensive end, we were strong in the box and our strikers performed well when they had their chances. The Vitesse match was a little lucky as we snuck one off an indirect free kick, but I'll take wins any way they come.

The Standings

With those two wins against PSV and Vitesse, we have moved into 3rd place and have a 4 point cushion over Vitesse. Ajax and PSV are the only two ahead of us. Ajax are still holding onto their 6 point lead on us, so they will be hard to bring down with only 5 matches left to go in the season. However, overtaking PSV is still possible. I'm pretty sure that we've played most of the more difficult clubs already, but some of the lower table clubs have given us problems. Every match will count.

Another good month that keeps us in the run for European football next season. The Feyenoord match was great to watch. We were up by 4 goals before they even registered their first shot. However, we got a little lazy in the end and they got a couple back.

The Standings

We are only 3 points behind the two league leaders! If only we had won a couple of our ties or losses, this could be a very different season. Still, we are guaranteed a 3rd Place finish in the league with 1 more match to play. We also have the European Places Playoff after this. I'm not sure how that works just yet, so we'll see. The top 8 teams go up for this playoff. Not sure how it works.

Standings | Past Positions | Fixtures - A 3rd Place finish is a great achievement for the club. Looking back through our fixtures, there were only two matches that we were completely outclassed in, our first matches against Ajax and PSV. In the second half of the season, we beat both of them showing that it is possible. Our point total is hopeful as well as we were only 3 points behind the champions, Ajax. I think that will a little help, next year could be very good for us.

The Cups

KNVB Beker Cup - We didn't do as well as expected. It was even a lower club that took us out. However, it was during a minor crisis moment for the club. I think that these matter have been resolved and we should be better in the coming season.

The Players

Squad | Transfers - As I was not part of the club when Beckers was brought in yet, I ended up making a small profit in transfers this year, around $1M. There were a few players of note this year.

Thomas Kaminski - GK - In 28 league matches, half ended in clean sheets. This young goalkeeper has a bright future here.

Rodrigo Alborno - M/AM L - A loanee from our parent club, Inter, Alborno lead the squad in assists and chipped more than a good share of goals as well.

Michael Chacón - AM C, ST - Our young striker has started well. A tally of 14 goals in 16 league matches will mean he should see increased time next year.

Luca Magnini - AM RLC, ST - Our second loanee from Inter, but wow do I wish he was a permanent signing. He broke every goal record this is to break, club and league. He has a bright future wherever he ends up. Hopefully, I may be able to sign him for real in a couple years.

The Backroom

Finances - We lost about $3M this year, but the qualification of the Europa League next year should see us recoup some back.

Faciilities - I bug our Board every chance I get for them to expand the stadium, but nothing works. We sell out most matches and have a general capacity of 99%. I did, however, get them to agree to a youth upgrade.

Plans for Next Season

I'm still planning of sticking around with sc Heerenveen. This means that we need to look at improving the squad for the Europa League, but I also don't want to reinvent it as they are working well. We will lose Magnani though because he is a loanee. Hopefully, I can grab him again for another year. I'd also like to perform better in the league, break into the top 2.
