A.S Monaco FC

Association Sportive de Monaco Football Club (French pronunciation: [a.sɔ.sja.sjɔ̃ spɔʁtiv də mɔnaˈko]; commonly referred to as AS Monaco or simply Monaco) are a French football club based in Fontvieille, Monaco. The club was founded in 1924 and currently play in the National, the third tier of French football. The team plays its home matches at the Stade Louis II located within Fontvieille.

Though based in Monaco, the club is regarded as a French club, as the club plays in the French football league system, and because the principality of Monaco is not a member of UEFA. Monaco used to be one of the most successful clubs in France, having won seven league titles and five Coupe de France trophies. The club has also used to regularly compete in European football having been runners-up in both the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and UEFA Champions League in 1992 and 2004, respectively.

Monaco enjoyed success in the 1970s and late 1980s during the managerial tenures of Lucien Leduc and Arsène Wenger, during which the club was amongst the leading lights of European football. Monaco's traditional colours are red and white, and the club is known as Les Rouge et Blanc (English: The Red and White). Monaco is also a member of the European Club Association. In December 2011, two-thirds of the club was sold to an investment group led by Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev. However, he left the club with a number of debts and the club were relgated from Ligue 1 in 2018. An eight year spell in Ligue 2 followed, but for one brief season back in Ligue 1. However, the club were riddled with debt and, with performances not being what they should be, the club sunk ignomously into the French National division and stayed there, finishing 11th last season. In May 2027, AS Monaco appointed eminent Santarcangelo manager Andrea Managerino to the position of manager...

So this is a complete departure from the previous thread (although the same save). No restrictions although, as ever, I will try to keep a mainly French flavour to the proceedings. I removed Italy from my leagues available, simply as I want no way to go back to Santarcangelo. I also resigned from Italy to stop me missing them! So here we go. I sacked all the staff and it's time to write a new chapter in this club's long history!

Well, I just lost a friendly 0-1 to my U-19's. In the 90th minute. With an own goal. We're shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit...

Plus in that matchup, I now have 4 players missing for the start of the season and up to 2 months. And an experimental formation that really didn't work....

So, I tried a experimental 4-4-2, with the second striker wide-out on the left in the AML position playing as a Inside Forward. However, this was a terrible idea as we got turned over time and time again in the pre-season. So, sadly, I had to change formation late on in the pre-season to the following.



We have a huge lack of talent and this should be enough to avoid relegation (yes, that was my brief!)

Yeah, having only used the catenaccio formation since FM12 was released, it'll be nice to try something else. And yeah, eventually. But who knows where I get to in the meantime.

Well, here I am, my first pre-season in football management at a new club. And what a mess this club was in. They'd accumluated so much debt that the first team was bought of their contracts and the club put into a CVA. The name means nothing anymore and the board (who had also turned us semi-pro) considered our target for this season was Avoid Relegation . That's right, the club that once boasted Barthez in goal and Saviola & Morientes up front are now part-time and content to avoid relegation to the CFA!! The club gave me an £11k transfer budget and a £15k wage budget. Time to go dumpster diving. I also had to employ a whole new backroom staff. Finally, I got them to increase the junior coaching in a vain attempt to perhaps get some gems in.

Hervé Raymond fired home from 20 yards to put us in the lead and then we got an own-goal to double our money. However, after conceding early on in the second half, Ryan Mouchel hooked the ball home after Ivan Popov's shot was spilled. A late goal against gave us a few scares, but we rode out the win.

Also, I raided parent club Olympique Lyonnais for DR Esteban Lecomte and DL Grégory Tangay

The only player to leave for cash was ST Maurice Perrin to AST Tripolis for £130k.

The last day of the Championnat National season dawned dry and cold, however things were soon to heat up. We went 0-1 down after 10 minutes, but equalised on 18 mins when Jéan-Christophe Ruiz fired home. This, coupled with Toulouse F losing, meant that we were promoted on goal difference. Things got even better in the second half as Hervé Raymond netted to give us the lead. The wheels then fell off in spectacular fashion. Gregory Tanguy saw a straight red for a hack inside the box and they scored the resulting penalty on 77 mins then, with the principality holding it's breath, they scored in the 89th minute to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and finish above us in the league.

Well, after last year's heartbreak, I was determined to avenge it and get us promoted this season. Our great run at the end of the season meant that our rep was slightly boosted too. This meant the board wanted mid-tabe obscurity this time and would give me a £53k transfer budget and £18k p/w wages in which to achieve it. We had no money to upgrade the facilites, but I'd managed to get them to agree to upgrade our junior coaching to an 'Excellent' level.

A tough season opener against Ligue 2 opposition. Jimmy Da Costa opened his account for the club early on and then an own-goal and a great solo goal by loanee Cédric Lesage to see us through to the next round.

We ran riot against a promotion contender for this year as we put five past them! Aymar Ropomat came back from a pre-season injury to put us in the lead, then the on-fire Jimmy Da Costa hit a double. Returning loanee Esteban Lecomte headed home for the fourth and Cedric Lesage outstripped the defence to score the fifth.

Our next cup game pitted us against the team that beat us to promotion by a point last season. However, we gained a measure of revenge, thanks to goals by Aymar Ropomat and Jimmy Da Costa that saw us dump out the Ligue 2 team and look forward to the next round.

Another team was put to the sword by this rampant side. Ex-PSG youth Mathieu Maigan headed home twice from corners to give us a 2-0 lead, then came young Vladan Arsenijevic's time to shine. Played because of Jimmy Da Costa's suspension, he scored twice to become our youngest ever goalscorer at 15 years and 137 days. Aymar Ropomat hit a fifth and then Dejan Pavlicic fired home from 20 yards to complete the rout.

We weathered a tough storm at the hands of the Ligue 1 team, but Ryan Mouchel broke away to score in the 70th minute and then Aymar Ropomat scored a carbon copy on 90 minutes to give us a famous (well, recently) win!!.

I decided to throw caution to the winds and break the bank in an attempt to get promotion. If we get it, we're safe. If not, we're selling. And quick! I trawled the Ligue 1 expiring youth contracts in February and identified three players that I thought would enchance the team. I managed to sign DC Mathieu Maigan on a free from Paris Saint-Germain, but my other two targets wanted £23k p/w to sign. Erm. No. So I tracked them all the way until they were released by their respective clubs. I then kept making offer after offer to them. A lot of 50% wage rises and high goal bonuses and large signing fees led to first, ST Jimmy Da Costa signing after being released from Olympique Lyonnais then, later, came AMR/ST Samir Medjahed. Also coming in, after being released by Ligue 1 clubs were; DC Bilal Yilmaz; D/WBL Mehdi Sbai; GK Gael Romero; DRL Sébastien Thomas and finally DR Jacques Njock. Finally, I signed WB/L Petr Jursa, star performer in the Czech Republic Euro '28 U-19 winning side. Coming on loan were AMR/ST Cédric Lasage from GF38 and DRC Esteban Lecomte from parent club Olympique Lyonnais.

Only French. Signed from Schalke 04 at 15 from £3.4m from Lyon. Played at FC Istres for a season on loan.

NOTE: He's equalled his best ever goal tally for a season (7 in 27 for Istres) in just 4 games...

Tactical Breakdown

Right, this season, I decided that I wanted to move away from my rigid catenaccio and embark on an attacking flow for my time with Monaco. It evolved from the 4-1-3-2 into a 4-4-2A and now, this season, is this.



I went for a more balanced philosophy, simply as I need to cover that hole in the middle. An attacking mentality with direct passing and little timewasting means we're always looking to hit the wingers or the TM to setup a break. The defensive line is deep enough to counter any attacks, but not so deep that we invite pressure

GK: Default instructions. Once we hit Ligue 2, these things will matter

DR/DL: A more defensive mindset than I used previously, to counteract the space given away by the two wingers.

DC: A 'one up, one down' scenario, with the slower stopper going forward and the quicker one of the pair covering.

DMC's: One is the 'Makelele', he holds it all together, with a greatly reduced mentality and the other is the 'Pirlo', advancing from deep to make a pass.

AMR/AML: Both are quick strikers that are given licence to cut inside and go for goal. With the formation being quite narrow, it means that they're often 1-on-1 with a DC/FB

ST's: The Target Man comes deep to feed either his fellow ST or to play in the wingers.

We continued to march on. Dejan Pavlicic put us ahead early, then Mathieu Maignan headed home for his third goal of the season. Finally, Ryan Mouchel slotted home to top off a great win.

A game of two halves here. Ryan Mouchel put us in the lead and then goals from Mathieu Maignan and Samir Medjahed put us up 3-0 by half time. But two goals in the 86th and 88th minutes made me panic.

Vladan Arsenijevic scored just before half-time to give us the lead, then a goal for both sides in the first 20 minutes of the second half finished the scoring, ours coming courtesy of Aymar Roponat .

TWO mistakes by Mathieu Maignan meant that we were consigned to defeat, with Jéan-Christophe Ruiz scoring our consolation.

This game was settled in 12 second half minutes. Samir Medjahed put us ahead on 58 minutes and then Aymar Roponat broke away to finish smartly.

Ryan Mouchel scored twice to put us in the lead and then Hérve Raymond lashed home a penalty when Mouchel was hacked down in the box.

It's actually quite humbling and pleasing that in another save Monaco ended up crippled with debt and in the National. In my French save I can't beat them to the title, they have finished the last few seasons with 90+ points, reached a CL final and have a 55,000 odd stadium which they fill every match, what a difference.
