I am taken over on 20th February 2012 with the club currently sitting 15th out of 16 in the Northern Irish Second Division.

Not the worst of starts at my new club. Both the home games have come against the then top two and the last match against leaders Armagh saw us snatch an injury time winner. Positive results since the opening 3-1 defeat so survival remains the aim but just 3 points between the bottom four with two going down.

Season 2011/12



One game to go in the league and it could not be much tighter for the last relegation place. Sadly following Sports and Leisure defeat to Knockbreda they are now down but just a point between the three others.

As if magic the last day of the season pulls out two cracking fixtures



So we travel to the bottom club and the two teams between us play each other. From my easy working out the only way we will go down is if we lose and the other two draw with each other.

The end of season fixtures were less exciting as they could have been but that suits me perfect. 2-0 up within half an hour set us on the way and within two minutes of S & L scoring we increased our lead again.



A great win at the start of the month away to second place Lurgan Celtic set us up well and losing just 2 in 10 since taking over the side in the bottom two is pleasing but now the hard work starts.

A busy summer at the club with 14 players being released and two others leaving to join H and W Welders and Institute. Coming into the club on amateur contracts were four players.

With having non-contract and amateur contracts for my semi pro side i am looking and trialling players every week so the squad i have now will be changing as and when needed.

The summer saw the board offer me a new two year deal which i rejected as i have 12 months left so will see where we are in May.

I have been offered a wage budget of £54pw of which im spending £26 and nothing to spend on transfers. The clubs current bank balance is -£92,000.

Given that budget the club has targeted promtion this season while the media think we will finish 5th.

Craig Liddle was sacked as manager of Darlington and the press asked for my interest in the job which i denied.

A decent start with four points from two games quickly changed to just five points in the next nine games. Follwoing a 3-0 home defeat to league leaders Killymoon the board decided to sack me.





So 271 days with the club we are one place better off than when i started. Not great.

In the three weeks before my sacking i had denied interest in the managers job at both Braintree and Mansfield.

Just about to land in the Blue Square Premier. Was hoping for a job in Wales but none have come up yet and dont want to spend anymore time on holiday.

Havant were sat bottom of the Blue Square Bet South. By the time the job came offer came they looked too far adrift.




A club with no cash that for two seasons in a row survive in the Blue Square Bet Premier on goal difference. Tough job for someone.

Well here i am in my next role. Not the job i was looking for really but im here now.

Should be a busy summer with the squad only just surviving for the last two seasons



The current squad does have a few players that i think can do a good job for us but importantly we need to get control of the finances.






Will two 20th placed finishes i am looking to improve on that in the coming season.

An FA Cup run could do wonders for the bank balance so will be looking to reach the 3rd Round.

The FA Trophy is something i always treasure so will want a run to QF's minimum.

An indifferent start to the season but happily being 6 point above the relegation places so far. The Lincoln win was pleasing but given the poor start they have had i expected three points. The run of defeats was not good but we have a more settled starting line up since and i can see which players need to leave.

We are lacking a goalscorer with our top scoring forward on three and midfielder Bridge-Wilkinson on four, although three were pens.

Finances are still poor, insecure with the bank balance sitting at -£778,415.

Nice gap from us to the bottom four but still disappointed with how things going. The cups did not bring in the money the club required so we have 16 games to try and finish as high as possible.

Injuries have hit hard with my two top scorers and both goalkeepers missing at least a month of action. Currently we are without our creative midfielder Bridge-Wilkinson for 2 months. 12 assists and 5 goals have been key for us.

The start to 2014 was awful with 13 conceded in 3 league games and 7 in two cup matches but we seem to have turned a slight corner with sucesessive clean sheets and a two goal debut from St. Johnstone loanee Christopher Kane.

The next few months will go a long way to decide my future as i am out of contract in the summer but i fear for the clubs future with the finances now sitting at -£979,488.

The finances for last year reported a loss of £683,702 but during the same period Darlington spent £503,094 on interest and loan repayments.

Well a tough season is over and a finish of 18th is lower than i wanted but higher than they finished in the previous two seasons. Hopefully off field problems are over following a chairman coming in so the club can look to build the way up the table.

Of the current squad 12 players are out of contract this summer and should i be offered a new contract and stay i will be looking to keep just three of those players. With finances better now im unsure of budgets for new season so one or two others may be offered the chance to stay.

The new youth intake saw 16 players join on trial, including 4 goalkeepers and 5 centre backs, and i have offered youth contracts to seven of those.

With the BSBP season finishing at little earlier than most it gives me a couple of weeks to decide about my future.

The middle of May brought my decision as i am offered a new 1 year deal on £725 pw.

My short stint is over at Darlington and my record reads:




Straight away i contact 8 teams looking for a new manager and four have offered me a quick return





First up was Aldershot. The season has ended with them being relegated to the BSBP after finishing 23rd in League Two, going down by a point.

Burton suffered a the same sadness and finished bottom of the Football League.

My third offer from the BSBP is York City. Finishing 15th in the season just past the two seasons before that saw 4th and 6th placed finishes.

My final offer is from Carmarthen. Finished the season 10th out of 12 in the Welsh Premier League.


Well any input would be nice. Where would you go? I have my first feeling of who but going to think on it for a bit.

Aldershot and Burton offering same wage budget but both finances 'insecure' while York wage budget is half of other two and also 'insecure'. Strangely Carmarthen are only side to offer transfer budget (£725)

Squad wise the two relegated teams teams are superior than York but morale is awful as York are a happy bunch. I have accepted a role and the club I have joined has a bank balance of. -£1.3m. Oh dear.

I have arrived at The York Community Stadium to find the promises from the chairman were false. An offer of a wage budget of £13,750 pw was cut to just £8,000 pw within a month. Add to that the fact the club have a bank balance of -£1.3m it has not been a great start.

On the playing staff front there has been 17 players released or had contract expired. Coming into the team is 15 new guys so alot of work is needed over the summer to blend the players together.

Given the awful finanical position and huge cut in wages i was bowled over by the clubs expectations. The minimum expected is a play-off challenge!

It looks like its going to be a rollacoaster ride of a season so settle in for a bumpy ride.

With the chairman instruting me a play-off place is the minimum i fully expect him difficult to work for. And that is how it proved. I imagine he is a guy around 50ft tall as his head seems in the clouds with his expectations and demands but he sure cut me down to size.

For some silly reason the board have offered me a new one year deal. After a long period of talks we agree a new 2 year deal to remain at the Abbey Stadium.

Its a tight league this one. Any of the top nine have a great chance of a title push. Our home form is what is letting us down so far. On the road we have only conceded 4 goals in the league.

The FA Cup ended with a battering at Boston while a tight win over Soham gives us a home tie with BSBP Mansfield in Round One of the FA Trophy.

Well what a start to the season. First month or so goals were hard to come by but we were not concecding either. That led to a few indifferent results but a victory over FC Halifax who were top sent us into the FA Cup trip to BSBP side Bromley with hope.

A stupid week with six injuries meant a change from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3 and a close 1-0 defeat ends our FA Cup run.

I know full well the only reason i am still in charge at the club is down to our FA Trophy win last season and following the cup defeat the media claim nothing less than a win away to Eastwood would seal my fate. A 3-0 defeat had me clearing my desk but i survived that.

The next week i dodged another bullet despite a 3-2 home defeat to Hinkley that leaves us 12th.

A trip to Colwyn Bay brought a third straight media story about my future but this time we win. And win well, 4-0. That starts a run of four straight league wins without conceding including a win at home to leaders Boston. In that time we win a replay away to Eastwood, after being 2-0 down, to make the next round of the FA Trophy.

At the end of October i was amazed to still be in charge at Abbey Stadium but by 1st December i pick up my first manager award



Along with that a decent month for two of my players also



Maybe, just maybe the tide has turned. Still down in 8th but just six points from the top and in great form.

There we have it. So close to the sack in November we managed to secure a play-off place on the last day, recover from 2-0 down at half time in the semi-final first leg to eventually win the final 4-0 away from home.

Back to the Blue Square Bet Premier for Cambridge but what next for me.

I have rejected the first offer of a new contract and maybe now after a relegation, promotion and FA Trophy win i should let my contract expire.



My problem is the only jobs around at the moment are:

York - been already
AFC Wimbledon - just finished bottom of League 2
Oxford - finished 21st in League 2
Doncaster - finished 14th in League 2


I doubt York would re-hire me, the two in League 2 i am unlikely to get and that leaves AFC Wimbledon, insecure finances, awful morale, best players leaving in the summer.

Following two offers from League Two sides i have opted to join Doncaster Rovers. A club with a difficult few years and a bank balance that reads -£1.8m the next 12 months are going to be tough.

All but 6 of the first team squad are out of contract in four weeks so i have to quickly decide who i want to stay and set about building a squad for the new season.

Season 2017/2018

npower League Two


It has been a busy time at the Keepmoat Stadium with almost a brand new squad of players to choose from.

Coming in has been 14 freebies and one loanee while £400k has been raised through the sale of seven players.



Importantly the club now is spending only £18k pw on wages compared to £38k+ when i joined. The reason behind such a drastic cut comes from the chairman informing me that his expectations for the season are to avoid relegation. Armed with this information im looking to use this season to build a squad and then have a real go for promotion next year.

I am happy with the squad i have, would not change one single player at the moment. I did miss out on three targets but refused to pay the wage demands.



Coming from Cambridge is my assistant manager Matt Oakley and u-18 manager Mark Bonner.

Oh dear oh dear. The worst of worst starts at my new club. Job on the line already. Just 3 points from 9 games and a crushing defeat to Middlesborough in the League Cup.

Next seven games

This is more like it, 13 points from 15 and a JPT win over Grimsby.

A really good season overall, having two older forwards helping the two younger ones meant goals were not really a problem and the back four were solid without being amazing.

We came into form at the right time, losing one of our final 12 games.

Having been out of a job since May im starting to want any job. I want to go to Scotland but so far no jobs other than in the SPL.

What made you decide to leave Doncaster?

Mainly was most of the squad were coming to end of contract and given the budget we had could not offer decent enough wages so thought time was right to try Scotland but also leave on a high of reaching play-offs.

Had the squad been more stable would have stayed one more year.

Overall a nice finish to the year, only placed one place lower than we could have when i joined so its been a success in my eyes. Already looking forward to the new season to see what that can bring. Promotion? Maybe.

The club offered me a new two year deal at the end of May but i have rejected that for now. Not looking to leave but like to keep my options open next summer.

Certainly a nice start to the season. Only slip up against the side relegated from the SPL.


Cup Results:



100% start in the cups also. Round 3 of the Challenge Cup brings a trip to non league Deveronvale while SPL side Kilmarnock come to us in the League Cup 3rd Round.

Thinking a Challenge Cup victory could be on the cards, a decent QF and at least one of the semi finalists will be lower than the First Division.

A good month all round ended with us coming from behind twice to grab a point. The league is really starting to take shape now with the bottom three looking like they are adrift already.

Cup Results:



Two more good results in each competition this moth give us a Challenge Cup semi final date with Scottish Second Division Ayr while our reward for a penalities win over SPL Kilmarnock is a trip to fellow SPL side Morton.


After an unbeaten run i collected the manager of the month award, hopefully the curse won't strike against Ross County.
