Player unhappy to stay at club, demands money to leave?

I got a player I brought in on free transfer from La Liga to my Newcastle side this summer. He's an excellent player and have given me some joy. But he couldn't settle so became unhappy. Now he wanted to leave and I arranged a transfer back to spain to the only team bidding for his services. If he's homesick and makes a havoc at my training ground, why would he demand money to leave?

it would be that the contract he is accepting is much lower

It doesn't make much sense though - if he's the one instigating the transfer, then you would expect him to be leaving at any cost. If the money means that much to him, he should just sit out his contract.
