Brazil tumbling down the World Rankings.

Recommended Posts

Never really paid much attention the Nations Ranking news item when it appears in my Inbox, but I noticed this...oh how the mighty have fallen

I've never seen a 'top' nation fall so quickly! Maybe a good Confederations Cup will give them a boost back up the rankings!

I'm sure Brazil took a nosedive on my FM11 save in the two years before they hosted the World Cup, as Acidburn has eluded to the temporary drop is no doubt caused by the lack of matches so they do not get the points needed to maintain a top 10 position

Does this happen to some degree to all teams that host a World Cup?

It will do as they miss a whole qualifying campaign of competitive matches over 18 months which give more ranking points than friendlies. I can't remember exactly but I think the World Rankings are calculated over a four year period so thats a significant loss of ranking points.

EDIT

Just looking at my FM11 save Australia are due to host the World Cup in a few months time and they dropped from a high of 40th to a low of 102nd.

Also Spain hosted the last European Championships and they dropped from 1st down to a low of 36th prior to the tournament.

I might have a look at how other host nations faired on my save, this could be a problem for European nations where seeding for qualifiers is driven by world rankings.

Hello, what do u expect? If Brazil plays only friendly games before World Cup 2014, theirs ranking has to drop dramatically! It goes the same with Poland and Ukraine before Euro 2012, Friendly games gives much lower ranking then a game in qualifying group etc.

Such extreme drops are unrealistic - Germany never dropped that low prior to 2006WC, or France in 1998...

Germany dropped as low as 22nd prior to the World Cup in 2006 while France dropped to 25th in 1998 but its worth pointing out that the rankings calculations have changed since then and that World football is probably more competitive now.

On my save Germany sacked Loew after Euro 2012 and dropped like a stone. They were only playing with greyed-out players at the time, which is an explanation.

It's 2022 now and once dropping out of the top 10 in 2012, they've never gotten back there. Usually scrapping for 20th place but dropping into the doldrums of the 30s is not unheard of. They've got good regens, but only about 6 of them play for the national side.

And I was sure I 'enabled the full selection of the German side' too, to avoid a situation like this. Brazil aren't faring much better either. England won WC2014 & 2018 and were 1st for 5 years. They're currently 3rd and haven't had a single english manager yet. Capello -> Wenger -> Ranieri -> Mancini.
