Preetty decent first Championship season, ticked most of the boxes the msot important was survival. Nothing really interesting of note about the season. Do need to make some more improvements before I will even think about pushing for promotion.

Finally allowed to scout whole of Europe so have scouts out everywhere looking for new talent. Hope to improve my defence as the main place I need some desperate improving.

The season started with my first major sale, Kalema Lukaku left for Southampton for a fee of £110k rising to £160k if he plays internationally, and with a 50% sell-on fee. Not a bad deal for a goalkeeper who wasn't exactly setting the world alight.

After a bad start, form picked up dramatically, and we rose up the table like a rat up a drainpipe.

In early March, top of the league by two points, injury crisis struck. My squad, whilst deeper, didnt really have the strength in depth to cope, and at one point, Williams, Adams, Shyllon, Karatoprak and Haynes were all injured simultaneously - with the exception of Shyllon, I'd say that was our four best players, by a distance, out at once. Several of the remaining players were very tired, too, and so the injuries just kept coming - 3 in 55 minutes against FC United on March 26th, for example! Turned out to be a combined total of 15 months out between the three - and again, it was two key players in Adams and Avgousti, with backup striker Melling the third. Up till that day, we were coping fine with the injuries. That game started the decline. With so many players out, we lost that game and then got hammered 4-0 away to Hayes & Yeading. It was Karatoprak's injury that really did it, and we found difficulty scoring goals, with just two in four games. He came back and BAM, 1-0 win against Rochdale. But it felt like it was too late already - three games remained, and we were four points off Southend at the top of the table. We had secured a playoff place but after the season I had up to the injury crisis, I was hoping for more.

The penultimate game was a routine 3-1 win over already-relegated Darlington, and left the league ridiculously well-poised. We won 3-0 away at bottom-placed Tooting and Mitcham, and in the clash of the titans, it went our way as Southend snatched victory at Colwyn Bay. The other way round would have meant the playoffs for me unless I had won about 7 or 8-0. Four straight wins at the end of the season after four games without a win was an impressive turnaround. It should have been much easier than it was and I got lucky in the end, but we limped over the line.

Cup runs this year were a bit of same-old, same-old. Really poor performance at Ebbsfleet in the FA Cup qualifier, but all the way to Wembley for our third FA Trophy Final in a row. The third consecutive Wembley win felt like a bit of an anticlimax after the amazing league finish, but still very satisfying, as we bow out of the FA Trophy effectively unbeaten in 3 years. And WE DID THE DOUBLE!

What a season!

On the downside, the need to make the stadium all-seater in order to move up to League Two cost the club £120k which hasn't helped the finances move up to the next level with me. So I don't know whether to laugh or cry that a bid of £450k for Harry Haynes was accepted from over my head by the board and Haynes is now a Burnley player. I would have sacrificed a bit of that cash for a future fee - he might well go for millions next time. Oh well. There was of course also a TV windfall from the Football League for the first time: £280k to be precise, very nice. We've also turned professional.

Key Players

The strikers deserve their own special section. They really hit their straps this year. I don't think they're the reason for the promotion, see below, but to score 74 goals between them is impressive. Only Manuel Ferreira had a higher Average Rating than Karatoprak or Haynes this season. As Colwyn Bay lost to Southend once again in the Playoff Final, I might look into signing him for next year. But all three of main strikers deserve huge credit:

I really will miss Harry Haynes - but hopefully I can keep hold of Karatoprak who should be good enough for League Two.

Joe McConville and Matt Tonkin - finally plugged the holes at full back on both sides. I believe this was the key, in the end. It's the first time I've had two decent full backs for a sustained period.
Volkan Kaya - key player in the anchoring role.
Wilfred Adams - the rock of the defence.
Josh Williams - found some form again in partnership with Adams
Giasoumis Avgousti - declined in form a bit this year but still a good player.

After his attributes hit a dramatic decline after a long injury, Abian Serrano left in January for £10k to Exeter. Before his injury, Serrano enjoyed two very prolific seasons, scoring 52 goals in 110 games.

ROBERT PARATORE
Hadn't been doing that well for me and I wanted to cash in, especially because he was on a pretty high wage for the BSP.

Next season, survival is key, but with quite a lot of really good players, if we can keep the squad together, then you never know it might be a better season than that. I would also hope that various club improvements might be possible - a stadium expansion maybe, or at least a scouting range expansion.

Targets for 2021/22
Promotion. SUCCESS
More quality in the squad. SUCCESS - Karatoprak came from within, but Fairhurst was a new signing as were McConville and Tonkin.
Improve depth so that injury crises dont hit too hard. SUCCESS - we had a terrible injury crisis which almost cost us promotion but we had just about enough. Next season the squad will have to be massively improved in both strength and depth.

Targets for 2022/23
Survival.
Cup run to maintain the finances - hope for a Premiership tie.
Sign at least three players with Championship or Premiership potential.


In other news, Arsenal won the Premiership by a point from Chelsea, who took the FA Cup as consolation, beating Newcastle on penalties in the final, whilst Atletico Madrid beat Juventus to claim the Champions' League in Paris.

#9 Darren Parker - Hastings United Season 14/15

Season Summary: A better season than the previous one, finishing mid table in 10th. We were never in any danger of relegation, and up until the last couple of months we had a shout at a play off spot. Went out at the first hurdle in the FA Cup to lowly Aveley, but managed to get to the 3rd round in the Trophy. Wage budget for next season has now been reduced again to £1900 p/w as we are in major financial difficulties. As such I will be letting the player of the year leave to free up some much needed wage allowance, and hope to get by with some lower wage replacements.

Manager of the Year

A good season which started with board paying of a remaining loan debt. We finished in 8th position, though I believe we would have deserved a better end position. Chose a new formation this season 3-1-2-2-2, due to having some really good AM L/R, who really couldn't play in my previous 4-3-1-2, and the fact we have better DC than DR/L made me try with 3 defenders instead. It worked out better than expected. Still conceding some goals, but as players get better, or better gets signed, I am confident, this will be our best option formation wise. Chairman decided to sell 1 of our players Mrmic, who had been with us for 6 seasons. It was both good and bad, as it gave some other midfielders a chance, but still would have liked to use him.

We won the League Cup (press) and made it the semi finals in the FA Cup, where Man Utd was just a tad better and we lost 2-1.

Notable players over the season:

GK:
- Alen Murtic: Starting to become a good keeper, as long as we dont concede any penalties!

DEF:
- Carl Flynn: Still our most solid defender. Didn't score as many goals this season, but is good and reliable.
- Cristiano: New signing from Jaguares. Cost 7mill but has been worth every penny so far.
- Abubakar Tagoe: Really strong season and he has improved amazing in stats this season.

MID:
- Marcos Costa: A good season, but has played both MC and AMR this season and not really hit the form, still 12 assists.
- Pirulito: So far not been worth the 9mill he cost last season, but he is getting there.
- Duarte Pacheco: His 3rd season here, and his first season he got to play. Did an pk job and have high hopes for him.
- Wayne Hall: New signing from Crewe and our first wonderkid. Has been training to become a striker. Amazing stats. Funny stats, but still amazing.

ATT:
- Giuseppe Cutolo: New signing. Bought from Man C reserves for 13.5 mill. Good player and can't wait to see how he will mature.

Board has agreed on the second facility improvement in 2 years (finally they have) and hope they will do it again Now they just need to build a new stadium!!

This year is going as I had hoped and kind of predicted. The strikers are kicking in form and the late signings of last year (March) and the couple from this year are really working out. A slight change in formation from 4-1-3-2 to a 4-3-1-2 has increased our scoring. With our defensive record last year and poor goalscoring record, I don't know why I didnt implement it more. Possibly because of the lack of a quality AMC. The season started anxiously and we couldnt turn chances into goals in our first two matches and we ended up grabing just 1 point from a possible, and achievable 6. I anticipated a re-run of last year but we kicked into form with a 3v0 win and we havent lost since, scoring in every game bar one. We sit at the top of the league for the first time after 16 games - 10W-5D-1L with 29GF and just 8A. A good start with plenty more to come I hope - including a cup run.

A nealy season in the end. After promotionlast year I was hoping for lower mid-table, which we more then managed. We started the season solid but around November time we hit the wall and a change in formation resulted in change in fortune and a march up the table, we were around the play offs but never able to really close in on them untill the last 6 weeks or so of the season where we went on a great 12 game unbeaten run the not only saw us break into the playoffs but ending the season in a quite frankly shocking 2nd place! In the playoffs we drew Kiddiminster (who we did the double over in league games) and a very comfortable away leg saw us cruise to a 2-0 win, going into the 2nd leg my team thought this would be the perfect time to produce our worst performace of the season as we went down 4-1 to lose 4-3 on agg, was truely gutted

Got all the way to the final of the FA Trophy. The final was 3 days after the 2nd leg of the play offs and despite our best effots is what not meant to be

On to next season where my only plan is to win the league!!!!!!!!!!

HENDON F.C - Season 2029/30

Another good season for the fans of Hendon Football Club to enjoy, we made a dodgy start to the season but we managed to pick up the wins atound Christmas and went on an 18 match unbeaten run which was a new club record. We finished 3rd in our Champions League group so we made it into the Europa Cup where we met Rapid Bucharest who we dispatched 6-0 on aggregate, then we met Liverpool who we beat 3-1 on aggregate. In the Quater Finals we faced a tough tie against Zenit St. Petersburg who we easily beat 5-1, Hendon were in the Semi-Finals of an European Cup match. AC Milan were next in the Semi-Finals, after a testing 2-2 draw away a full house at Hendon Stadium saw us draw 0-0 so we went through on away goals, next was a Final against Catania at FC Porto. We started slowly but we went into a 2 goal lead at half time, a goal midway through the second half gave us a Cup Double for the first time.

Just hammered League 1 side Doncaster in the FA Cup 2nd Round 4v0. Completely unexpected. I was hoping we would put up a good fight, but things turned out better. We were under pressure a lot but our early goal gave us the win in reality as Doncaster pursued a much more aggressive and attacking game. With players behind the ball and playing counter attacking football, we were able to break through on a number of occassions and with some solid finishing, come away with an expected victory and an extra £27.54k.

A much improved season, but annoyingly was in a promotion place for most of the season, and just couldnt hold that form. It was like the squad gave up or knew they werent ready for premiership so saved some future embarassment. We ended up losing 5-4 to Newcastle in the Playoff Semi Finals.

We also made it to the FA Cup semis, but lost to Man City 2-1. We did beat Everton in the quarters, so have to be happy about that.

My finances are all over the place, but I am attempting to get a grip on them. We have got just over 2000 new seats going into the stadium, so hopefully will get more attendance money from mid season next season.

Aims

Get a new DL, AMR, DMC and poss GK
Get rid of players that I really shouldnt still have at club
Perhaps start investing in a couple of promising youngsters

No luck in the cups crashing out in the prelim round of the Carling Cup, Second Round of the FA Cup and Q/F of the Johnstone's paints

We were acknowledged by our peers as I picked up the Manager of the Year, Jamil Adam picked up top goalscorer, Yala Bolaisegot goal of the season and four of my players made the team of the year.

The Jamil Adam Trophy (Top Scorer) was won by Jamil Adam with 40 goals from 46(1) apperances
The Pass Master Trophy (Most Assists) for Michael Ratcliffe 28 from 31(6) Apperances
The Tuff Tackler Trophy for Bob Harris 6.95 per game
The Wizard of the Dribble Trophy for Yala Bolaise 2.38 a game

Match of the year - was our 2nd ever league game it certainly gave them belief.....

PROFILE

I’ve started again as Hendon because I had completely ruined Marine financially. I now have a better understanding of finances in the Blue Square leagues so hopefully this will go much better.


AIMS

· Survive comfortably whilst building a good squad for next season.
· Reach the FA Cup 1^st round.
· Keep financial losses to a minimum.


LEAGUE (POSITIONS GRAPH)

An average start was followed up with a run of 7 games in which we only picked up 2 points and dropped towards the relegation zone. In the middle of December we hit form and started to look like we might just make the playoffs and with 4 games left we were the in-form team in the division only one place outside the playoffs. We ended with only 1 win and 1 draw from those 4 games which meant we had missed out on the playoffs by 4 points. Despite overachieving in the league this season I still felt like we had missed an opportunity.


FA CUP

We reached the 4^th qualifying round of the FA Cup having gone through on replays in each of the previous 2 rounds. In the 4^th qualifying round we lost 3-1 at home to a Gateshead side who were near the top of the Blue Square Premier. We went out a round earlier than I had hoped but I was pleased with our performance in this cup anyway.


FA TROPHY

We lost 1-0 at home to non-league Banbury during our run of bad form. We should really beat teams of this level but at the time I was just glad to be able to concentrate on getting our league form back on track.


PLAYERS

Josh Wilson finished the season as Hendon Supporters’ Player of the Year and Top Goalscorer as well as the Blue Square South Player of the Season and Top Goalscorer.

Jake Nicholson made one of the central midfield positions his own halfway through the season and I fully expect him to still be there for a long time.

Jeremy Helan was a late signing and only played 10 games at left back for us but he has significantly improved a weak area in our side and he will be a key part of our defence next season.


FINANCES

Due to our run in the FA Cup we were able to minimise losses and we are only £44,000 in the red which is partly due losses incurred building a new stadium. A loan costing £11.75k per month has been taken on to build the stadium, I think this will be difficult to cope with unfortunately.

Our Junior Coaching has been improved to Adequate level.
A 4,883 capacity stadium is being built and should be ready by 22/6/2014.
Our average attendance for the season was 313.

Went into the new season in a new stadium expecting to struggle due to the media prediction of 23rd. However, a great start to the season gave the team confidence and momentum which never waivered until mid April which was a bit squeeky bum time. Luckily, the team dragged themselves over the finish line and clinched promotion with a game to go. Finished the season with a great 5-0 loss against Notts County!

2018-97 Season Review:

An okay season from our perspective.. A strong start among the playoff teams crumbled and we soon found ourselves midtable and down to earth through multiple 4+ goal losses. We finally got a upgrade of our training facilities through, and a new stadium to boot.

Player of the season:

Sergey Melnik - M/AM/S L/C - Plays well. But I'm not sure he's the solution in the long run.

Other Key Players

Nicola Baio - D R - Strong wingback. Will need to up his game in the new season

Maurinho - AM R/S C - Played well, but a replacement is already signed.

Kenneth Christensen - AM R/S C - Still our top goalscorer although injuries ruined some of his season.

2019/208 Season Preview:

I've already signed a couple of decent looking young players. I will look to rebuild the squad for yet another season and getting some more pieces in order to compete for promotion, especially some centrebacks.

The League

Well this season started off as i expected, which was a struggle, the first half of the season we were battling hard, but kept on losing vital games by a goal, and times when we seemed to be playing well we would concede a stupid corner, or the opposing team would score their one shot on target.
December and January proved an up turn in form for us, although we never seemed to be able to get a proper run together, and always seemed to be on the cusp of a good run only to lose an unexpected or dissapointing game.
We continued in February and seemed to be moving up the table, well we were, we were doing so well that we managed to sneak into 6th, the last playoff spot. Now all i had to do was hold onto that position for the last 10 games of the season.
CUE AWFUL RUN! As my player saw the possibilities of the Championship looming, they seemed to all go off to dream land. Our last 10 games of the season resulted in the following
Pl 10 - W - 2 D - 2 L - 6 (Yes thats 2 wins, 2 draws, and 6 losses)

The form was enough to send us plummeting down the table into a dissapointing 11th place.

An Acheivement for me here. I made a clean sweep of losses in the first round. Lost to Sunderland in the League Cup first round, Hartlepool in the Fa Cup first round reply and Millwall in the JPT first round.

Key Players

Zac Ansah - Once again he is the Key Player for the club. He scores whichever league he is in, and his potential can still rise. Seems to score for fun at times, and hope he can keep this up for the next few years, at least until the Premier League. I have already decided i am going to find a way to keep him at the club for life. I think his achievements for the club deserve recognition. He has also this season become the clubs all time leading goalscorer.

Peter Larsen - Struck up a good partnership with Ansah. Is not always first choice but for the majority of the season (Apart from a few dips in form, and injuries) he was the ma to compliment Ansah. Came in with a decent return of 10 goals and 9 assists in 35 starts.

Lee Carpenter - One again he improves year on year stats wise, and will be a another player i plan to take into the premier league and into the clubs history books. 7 goals and 12 assists may not be the best stats from a long season, but i can't see a better MR than him in the league.

Joe Wright - Not the first time he has appeared in the key players list either. A massive contributer again with a haul of 17 assists in just 31 league starts. His stats still are not the greatest and he is not always first choice, but you can't argue with a player who is consistently setting up goals. Did pick up an injury after this screenshot that will see him out for the first month of the new season.

Marco Appiani - Was close between him and Corbin Ong - But Appianis form was better and he seemed to be a more consistent player. Has alot of potential and scored 7 goals from CB which is impressive enough, and can also fill in at RB if needed. Him and Corbin Ong need to form a consistent partnership if we are going to win the league or get promoted this next season.

Other News

Nothing much other than Zac Ansah getting player of the year and breaking the all time goalscoring record for Bury Town.

Next Seasons Aims

1. Promotion - Simple really we need to get promoted.
2. New key players - need a few more key players and a few more english as i was struggling to field 6 HG players in the squad last season.
3. Do SOMETHING in one of the cups. Don't want another clean sweep of rubbish. Think i will choose one cup to play my first team in.

After last season's disapointment (FA Trophy runners up, play off losers) I set my team out for promotion, I only made 3 new signings over the summer as I felt we were close last season and needed evolution rather then a revolution, we started ok and spent most of the season in and around the play offs, but every time we got up to top spot we blew it and never really convinced, with 7 games to go we were 2nd 3 points off top with 2 games in hand, 7 wins would see us champions, we then won our next 3 games to give us a great chance, but then 4 straight drews left us in the play offs.


We drew Crewe in the playoffs and it was them or Barrow that I wanted to play having never beat Ebbsfleet in 6 previous games, a good solid first hour of the away leg found us 3-0 up, however some sloppy play allowed them to grab 2 quick goals to end the 3-2 to us. In the 2nd leg we were fantastic! We played them off the park and won 4-0 and cruised into the final 7-2 to play Ebbsfleet!
A very even first half saw us go in level 2-2, we then stepped up in the 2nd half and in the last 20 mins we grabbed a couple of goals and saw out the rest of the game to win 4-2 and seal promotion into the football league!!!

Brief update, only because I need to get going on a major squad revamp, and I may mean it this time. Lots of players dont want to renew contract. Others want first team football. Others want bigger clubs. Need to just try and keep the happy players, find a couple of half decent british youngsters, and see if I can get some better players in generally.

Having managed to bag myself a 1v1 draw against Middlesbrough in the FA Cup 3rd Round, I get to take them to our ground where I'd like to think we could outplay them. Reality is we shouldnt have even had a draw, they bombarded us with pressure and we got lucky. But, the extra £140k from the tv is a helping hand in our poor financial times. I'm hoping we can force it to penalties or something! But I feel that may be dreaming a little bit.

Hoping we can win the FA Trophy and the League this year for a bit more cash and finally the ability to play in League Two. Things are moving up for my Hitchin boys. Wish me luck against Middlesbrough! Ill need it.

Aspirations of a solid finish this year may be hindered after star striker Bunn declared himself unhappy and wanting to leave for a bigger side. I tried talking to him - it made it worse. He's our top goal scorer so hopefully he will still play and score, if not, our secondary strikers will get a proper chance - which they probably deserve to be fair.

Edit: Who needs your most prolific goal scorer when you can just use your second striker alone? We just beat 7th place Championship side Middlesbrough to go through to the next round (Bolton). Im not entirely sure how realistic a win it is, but I suppose we've seen it happen IRL and its given me a hefty £68.85k to the balance plus TV money. My cup run has gone further than expected :O

Manager of the Year Runner Up - PRM Top Scorer - PRM young player 3rd

A good solid season, without any remarkable achievements. Finished 7th and got an automatic qual for next seasons EURO Cup as only highlight. Board finally agreed it was time to build a new Stadium, so 2 years from now, we are moving into a 22525 capacity stadium. Had the 3rd consecutive upgrade on training and youth facilities. Continued to play the 3-1-2-2-2 formation. We scored alot of goals this season, but also did concede quite some goals. Hopefully the conceding part can get better and we can push for a better league position. Our best game of the season was found in the PRM where now relegated Birmingham wondered what went wrong, as they lost 8-2 at home. (press)

League Cup was abysmal and we had a 3-0 defeat away to Tottenham. FA Cup wasn't alot better and saw us exit in the 6th round to Man Utd. This game was particular depressing, as we were up 2-0, but lost 4-2.

EURO Cup was a great run. We managed to get to the Q/F where League winners Arsenal waited. Loosing 3-1 at home in first leg and there really wasn't alot to play for away, but we managed to secure a 1-0 win.

A number of players had a good impact on our season:

GK:
- Alan Murtic: Had a good season, but is lacking consistency.

DEF:
- Carl Flynn: Besides getting older now and stats wise not better than our other choices, he is still rock solid in defense.
- Lars Andersen: Played alot more this season and did it really well.
- Cristiano: Our best defender and a good player getting the ball into counter action.
- Abubakar Tagoe: Very close to Cristiano's abilities and really strong.

MID:
- Marcos Costa: Had another great season. 9 goals 19 assists.
- Carlos: Tireless DM. great player.
- Ibrahim Turan: Controlled our midfield and played solid in defending phases.
- Sven Haufe: Our "spare tire" played both CM and MC when needed.
- Pirulito: Finally starting to repay the 13 mill he cost 2 seasons ago.
- Florian Schwaab: Soo much potential, but haven't had a breakthrough yet.

ATT:
- Giuseppe Cutolo: 45 games and 17 goals. Had hoped for more goals, but he repaid those with 14 assists.
- Wayne Hall: only 1 word for this player. Amazing! 56 games. 53 goals, 21 assists and 15 mom. Euro Cup topscorer with 19 goals.

Signed a few good prospect youngsters, more in the case we loose some of our regular squad players.

Besides, I'm not saying it's a bug, more I wonder if it's something you can't do given team meetings are meant to improve morale, or if my form needs to be worse etc,

HASTINGS UNITED (#68) Season 3 2014/2015

The Season
Our first season in the Blue Square Premiership was a tale of two halves. My first priority was dumping some of the players with expired contracts I felt couldn’t help out at the new level. I then brought in a few players (7, from Jun to August) that I hoped would help us through the first season. Only one of those, Ben Bailey, played a huge role, accumulating 42 appearances at the right back position with a 6.95 overall rating. Two others played rotation roles, accumulating about 20 appearances each. A couple others were brought in for future potential and put into the youth team to grow.

During the first half season, avoiding relegation seemed to be a real battle. We managed 25 points (7 wins and 4 draws) in our first 23 league matches, and hovered just above the relegation spots for most of that first half. I knew that if I could match that point total in the second half, we would likely survive (45 points being the historic threshold for survival)…but we had to actually achieve that doubling of points total in the second half. With only 23 goals scored, vs 42 allowed, things didn’t look great. My outstanding defence of the first two seasons just wasn’t working.

Late in October, I brought in Kossi Hodouto to play alongside Tunnecliffe (my star from the previous two seasons). The Togo defender had been with Tottenham for three years (only making two appearances in cup matches during that three year period), and was pointed out to me by, I believe, my AssMan. According to all of my coaching staff, he is universally regarded as having great League One potential, and he immediately made a difference in my back line. He ended up making 28 appearances, with an AvR of 7.00, adding one goal and three assists. Strangely, he had no MoM awards.

Two other players rounded out my transfer acquisitions. Right Winger/defender Matt Parry came in to play a rotation role (and to cover for international absences). He made 16 appearances, grabbing one goal and two assists, with an AvR of 6.93. Not outstanding, but he definitely came in handy when he was needed.

Finally, when Polish goalkeeper Mateusz Taudul was recommended to me (as having potential to be much better than my current GK, and of similar current ability), I decided to pick him up with the idea of making him my future keeper. However, the future came quicker than expected, as my starter ended up missing most of the last nine weeks with training injuries (hamstring, hernia) --- the first missed games by Ollie in two years. But, boy, was I glad to have picked up Mateusz. 15 appearances, 6 clean sheets, averaged 1.13 goals/90 minutes, claimed 7 wins and 3 draws, including consecutive shutouts against Alfreton, Forest Green, and playoff-hunting Cambridge (in matchday 44, away at the Abbey). Instrumental in my final push to the top half of the table. Made team best XI despite playing only 15 matches. (Ollie might've been given a bad break here....he played as well as Mateusz in the 2nd half...but the whole teams' abysmal fist half of season might've hurt his chances to remain in the top XI for a 3rd year).

My stats for the second half were much better than the first half. 12 wins + 4 draws for 40 points put me well outside of the relegation battle. 38 goals scored vs 22 against, reversed the tally of the first half. 8 of my 12 clean sheets came in the second half of the season.

A really (really, really) good January saw me pull 12 points from 5 matches, starting out with a 6-0 drubbing of Darlington (I play well against them…as seen by this 6-4 season finale against them!) Where I couldn’t put more than two non-losing matches together in the first half of the season, I managed two 5-game non-losing streaks in the second half.

As I said..the season was a tale of two halves!

CUPS: My cup matches were a huge disappointment this season. As with my first season, I had some terrible draws, with both of my initial FAT and FAC matches being drawn against higher rep teams. I took both to a replay, but ended up losing both of my initial matches. At least it allowed me to concentrate on the league…which might have been a blessing.




Players of Note

My choice for player of the season has to be Shay McCartan. He put in 44(3) appearances, starting out in the right midfield position, but moving up front in the latter half of the season. Moving him up front paid dividends---he averaged a 6.89 AvR at the M( r ) position in 15 appearances, and a 6.65 in the M(C ) position in 8 appearances (during my 5-3-2 formation). However, in 22 appearances up front, he had a 7.26 AvR. 6 of his 14 goals came in the final five matches (all from the striker position), and all but 1 of his goals came from up front. He did add 7 assists and a team-high 5 MoM awards, with an overall rating of 7.05.

Ethan Mannion fell off a bit this season, but was still productive with 9 goals and 10 assists. His AvR was a respectable 6.99 --- not earthshattering, but given the way the first half of the season played out, I’m luck to have anyone above 7.0 for the season J A bit of a worry however, was his 8 yellows and 2 red cards picked up. At £575/week, I’m not sure he’ll be back for the new season. Will have to see what his demands are---he’s already the highest paid on the team (by quite a bit—next highest is £450). With finances being what they are…he’s likely to be looking for a job elsewhere. Unfortunate---he sees me as one of his favored personnel…and I’m sure he’s one of the fan favorites….but I just can’t see too much of a payraise in the future.

Striker Sean Cassidy also had another decent year, with 9 goals and 10 assists—an overall 6.93 AvR. Played a bit both on the left wing and up front, contributed 4 goals in the final 6 matches from the left wing (actually had a higher AvR from the ML position at 7.31 than the striker position. If Mannion is out next season, will partner McCartan up front.

Midfielder Padraig Byrne had an outstanding year from the midfield position. Definitely need to keep him around, he scored a team high 15 goals, added 6 assists, and had a team high 7.03 AvR. 8 of his 15 goals were from the penalty spot, from which he was perfect. (the only statistical category, by the way, in which any Hastings United player led the league…the next best spot-kick taker was Tom Shaw from Cambridge, with 4 successful PK attempts). 4 of his 7 non PK goals were in that final push to end the season, with a superb hattrick against Darlington to end the season (and stay one ahead of Shay, who tried his best to equal or exceed Byrne’s total tally in that wild final game!)

Finally, this my “Young player of the Year” Dalvinder Malessa. While not new this season, he was still the youngest regular in the squad. As with his first year, he fit in well with the backline (at least as well as anyone, given that horrid first half!) Playing a mix of 5-3-2 and 4-4-2, he played solidly in the left-back position, garnering 40 appearances, with three assists, three MoM, and an AvR of 6.95. 2^nd on team with 4.38 tackles/game – a solid keeper for the future. He’s already looking for a new contract, and as he’s only on £50/week, I’m sure I can see my way to increasing his wages J. Chosen as fans Player of the Year

Other Notes of Interest

By end of season, team was 17^th in goals scored, but the second half defense put us up to joint 7^th in goals allowed. Solid foundation for next season I think. We were worst in set-piece scoring, managing only 5 goals from corners (last), 4 from indirect freekicks (23^rd), and 1 from direct free kicks. Need to improve in this category next season!

Reputation wise, we’re still slowly inching up. Still the lowest BSP team. Still have several BSN/BSS teams above me, but did climb above a couple through the season. Given my 12^th place finish (24^th predicted) I’m hoping that when the season update arrives, this will show some more progress!

Discipline is still a problem..65 yellow (joint 3^rd highest) and 4 red cards. Definitely need to stop that trend L

Finances -- about £150k in the red. Poor cup runs did not help at all, though the board came through with more than £400k in cash injections throughout the season.

Budget wise, with the promotion, I’ve been given £4.8k (up from 3.6k) I managed to stay about £800-£1K below throughout the season…which, given the financial situation, probably kept us from going too badly in the wrong direction.
Salary of £216k/yr is 23^rd among BSP teams---about as expected. Hopefully can move upwards a bit with the successful campaign this year.

From what you can see on the positions graph, the final position of 4th, was the highest we had got to all season, and to be honest in early season I was worried we may get pulled into a relegation battle. Struggling due to lack of home grown, lack of leading quality players, and lack of money. I need promotion, but lost in playoff semi finals. At least I have hit the playoffs for past 3 seasons, so we are there or there abouts.

LEAGUE (POSITIONS GRAPH)

We were consistently brilliant throughout the season and deserved to finish top with a points total of 85. However, Bath also had a brilliant season and managed to finish 3 points ahead of us which left us in the playoffs when ordinarily our points total would have left us well clear at the top.


PLAYOFFS (FINAL)

In the playoffs we were drawn against a Dover side who we always struggle against. The 1^st leg in Dover finished 3-3 and in the 2^nd leg at home we won 1-0 after extra time to set up a final against Truro City. We dominated the final but with 86mins gone it was still 0-0 when home grown youngster Gary Ward picked up a second yellow and left us a man down. Poor defending from a 90^th minute corner cost us and we lost 1-0. It was a bitterly disappointing end to what looked like a very promising season. The final was our last game at Vale Farm before moving into our new ground.


FA CUP

We reached the 4^th qualifying round of the FA Cup for the second year running, this time we lost 2-0 away to non-league Banbury. We missed a big opportunity to reach the 1^st round here.


FA TROPHY

We reached the 3^rd round of the FA Trophy where we lost 3-0 away to a Hampton & Richmond side I really expected us to beat.


PLAYERS

Anthony Horley is a home-grown youngster who came through the youth system at the end of last season to become the youngest person to play for Hendon and also Hendon’s youngest goalscorer. He finished his first full season as our top goalscorer with 20 league goals and 23 goals overall.

Jake Nicholson had another good season in the centre of our midfield. He finished with 5 goals and 11 assists in 38 league games as well as scoring the goal that put us in the playoff final.

Jakub Sokolik joined midway through the season as a replacement for the outgoing Elliot Brathwaite who we could not stop leaving due to wage restrictions. Sokolik made 17 league appearances and finished with an average rating of 7.39, as our best defender he will be very important next season.


FINANCES

Our losses for the season totalled approximately £154,000 which leaves us with a total debt of £220,000.


FACILITIES

We moved into our new 4,883 capacity stadium on 22/6/2014.
Our average attendance for the season improved from 313 to 461 partly due to large attendances in the playoffs.

The pre-season aim was to have a mid-table finish which seamed more than possible after the first ten or so games. However, things soon took a turn for the worst and the relegation zone was occupied by myself for a number of weeks due to a terrible run of 10 league games without a win. An 8-0 away win over Blackpool in the FA Cup got the belief back in the side and the league climb started to ensure League One football was secured for another season...phew!

Our aim in pre-season was to achieve upper mid-table and perhaps have a shot at the playoffs. Performance in the cups was quite important considering the financial state of the club with a new stadium in the pipeline.

Season started slowly with a couple of defeats and things weren't looking well. However after a few new additions to strengthen, the team started their climb up the table. The cups went well for the most part, getting to the 5th round of the FA where we lost to Coventry (making a good bit of money along the way). We reached theh final of the FA trophy but unfortunately lost out to Grimsby. Disappointment didn't last long though because we won the playoff final a week later to achieve back-to-back promotion.

Another good season in the league but we were disappointing in Europe. We finished 3rd in our Champions League group again but were put out of the Europa League in the 2nd Knockout stage by Atletico Madrid. In the cup front we should've done better but I think next season will be our time to shine!

My first season in the Football League, and as a professional team, was remarkable. Never lower than eighth, we went from fighting for a playoff spot in mid-season to table-toppers in early April, our playoff spot guaranteed. But that wasn't the end of our run - continuing to clinch automatic promotion, securing it on April 10th, before absolutely romping to the title with an incredible run from the turn of the year. We lost to Wolves on New Years' Eve, then won 19 of the remaining 24 games to shoot up to League One. Incredible, really. I wasn't expecting it at all! Apologies, I forgot to screenshoot the Positions Graph this year, but essentially, it was around 6th for half the year, then shot up to first and flatlined there.

Towards the end of the season I signed a five-year contract. The board clearly like me. And whilst there was talk of a takeover, I'm quite happy with this board, as they give me extra investment when necessary, and the only bid I've had accepted over my head was for Harry Haynes, and that was an offer I would have been unable to refuse anyway (£450k). Also, they have more than doubled my wage budget for next season, so prepare to see some big signings!

Cup runs this year were chalk and cheese. I lost to Orient at the first hurdle in my first shot at the Johnstone's Paint Trophy, but the FA Cup saw two lucrative ties with QPR and Wolves, who were our eventual conquerors. QPR were a League One side but it was still quite a lucrative trip, and an impressive scalp. They made the playoffs in League One, too.

Finances are steadily improving, helped by ever-increasing TV revenue and prize money.

Daniel Jones and Matt Jenkins - couple of key loan signings for the last quarter of the season really gave us the impetus to push on and win the league.
Andy Fairhurst - top scorer.
Josh Rose - top AvR of any non-loanee.
Gokhan Karatoprak* - couldn't quite make it three strikers with 20+ goals but very close.
Volkan Kaya - very impressive season from the Volk.

Had a bid accepted above my head just before my last report, but I thought I'd include him here. Shame, because I think he'd have thrived in League Two, but the money was good.

Next season, I doubt it will be so easy. League Two has an extra automatic promotion spot so there was a bit less pressure. Also, I think most of the players I had in the BSP were League Two quality, but whether they can make the step up into League One is far more doubtful. I will have to assess the squad in the summer and release quite a few, and use my improved wage budget to bring in some star quality.

Targets for 2022/23
Survival. SUCCESS - well....
Cup run to maintain the finances - hope for a Premiership tie. SUCCESS - Wolves aren't quite Man Utd but it was helpful nonetheless.
Sign at least three players with Championship or Premiership potential. FAILURE - Not including loanees, only Lee Perry and Mike Faulds have Championship potential, but several existing ones seem to have stepped up better than expected, as the consecutive promotions demonstrate.

Targets for 2023/24
Survival.
Cup run including a victory over a Premiership side.
Sign at least one player with Premiership potential.


In other news, Chelsea won the League, Newcastle grabbed the cup, Swansea became the first non-English team to win anything for god-knows-how-long, whilst in Athens, Inter beat their noisy Milan neighbours to clinch the Champions' League. My team of choice for this challenge, Wingate & Finchley, came up - and if I ever complete with Harrow, I might jump ship and try to lead them to glory, too!

We've only gone and done it! An incredible season took us from 20th after our first couple of games to the Blue Square Premier title! Anton Forrester, Alex Jones and Jack O'Connor put in over 50 goals between them to secure the clubs place for the first time in the league. It's going to be tough, but we'll fight as hard as we can!

Anton Forrester: This lad is dynamite, he chalked up 23 goals in 50 games and secured a average rating of 7.28 in the league (7.22 overall), my ass man reckons he could be Championship calibre, I wouldn't argue with that.

Second game of the season and I think I'm just going to have heart attacks if this keeps up. Lost the first game 3-0 away at Basingstoke and was hammered and then this happened:

Apologies for the double season post the wife has been away and i've had some game time!!

Season 3 proved to be a successful if disappointing one. A tally of 70 points is normally good enough for the play offs but it was only good enough for 9th. To be fair there were times when we were good and times when we were poor but after a good start to miss out on the playoffs was disappointing. We signed only 2 players one on loan and a backup centre half but with early cup exits we got into financial trouble.

Season 4 carried on from where we finished season 3 on a roll, in fact a combined 22 match unbeaten run left us top of the table and into the FA Cup second round. This provided us with a welcome financial benefit, but when we lost we went on a 6 game winless run which switftly pulled us back into the playoffs. The season largely relied upon a good defence and "super" keeper and an Auzzie striker and a youth team prospect who stepped upto the plate when we went 4-3-3 rather than 4-4-2 at christmas. The change in formation and success it provided was extremely surprising as we lost one of my NC strikers and played my attacking winger from the bench for the last 20games or so.

Victory in our penultimate game secured a play off spot and victory in the final game ensured 4th spot and a two legged tie against Coywyn Bay. First leg at home dull finished 0-0 end of. Second leg saw us miss a 6th minute penalty before going 2-0 down after half and hour. We bossed the midfield from then on in and fought back to 2-2 and into extra time where 2 more goals gave us a 4-2 lead only to be pegged back to 4-3 and cling onto victory. Into the final we went with renewed confidence we had not lost to Kettering in 6 previous meetings and so it proved again as we scored early and clung on for 1-0 victory and PROMOTION to the BSP.

As a result we've got some ground improvements at a cost of £180k but a new £750k 20year loan has wiped out debt and although our wage budget remains at 2.5k we have a 7.5k transfer budget........hmmmm who to buy??

Started the season by requesting a trial day. This gave me some youngsters to sign that are better quality than my own youth products, still not great, but at least may be able to not be embarassingly bad if needed to fill in home grown player rules. Didnt get any stand out players, but you never know if a lower league club wants to buy them for a profit.

I am also running a more strict system, if a player moans about bigger clubs and wont take my word that I will try and get the club to improve, I will offer them ot on transfer. Same with any players complaining about lack of first team, reserve quality players can be picked up cheap, so if I can turn any profits I will. I also sold a couple of my highest wage earners partly cos they wouldnt sign new contracts.

The season started well, until I had to go to bed last night. Since starting to play today, the form has been all over the place. It took til the last day of the season where we needed a win to even secure a playoff spot. Luckily it was 4th time lucky for North Ferriby in the Playoffs, and we beat Peterboroguh and QPR to get PROMOTED!!!!!

In the FA Cup we got to the 4th round after a 4-1 win over Spurs, befoe losing 2-1 to Arsenal. In the League cup, we beat Chelsea in round 3, to set up a tie against Ipswhich we lost. But encouraging that we did beat 2 Prem clubs this season. Just need to do that in the league next season.

Unfortunately our finances are currently awful, but I havent got to the bit where the first Premiership money comes in. The only thing I will be desperately asking my board for when we are next in the black, is a relaid pitch as ours is in awful condition, and we have awful home form compared with away form.

Hendon - Blue Square Bet Premier - 1st - 2015/16

When we lost the first game of the season 4-1 to Newport County I thought that it was going not going to be our season, but I could hardly have been more wrong, as we tore up the rest of the league to take the title with a total of 107 points, 17 points clear of the very team which handed us that opening day thrashing. The team scored plenty of goals, 128 in all competitions, with a number of players getting among the goals, 7 players all scoring at least 9 times. Cup form was only a tiny improvement on last season's, as we crashed out in the first round of the FA cup, and the FA Trophy 4th round after extra time.

Joe Wright once again was outstanding, and won the BSP Player of the Season. Collins was the top scorer in the team, bagging 27 goals and fellow new signing Armelin also had very good season, as did centre halves Nicholas and Turley.

Coming into a team with no backroom staff whatsoever made it difficult to judge the existing squad. Not that it really mattered, as most of the upped and left within a week anyway. Throughout the season I went slightly mad signing youngsters, firstly on my own judgement and then later on with the assistance of my one scout and assistant manager.

An amazing win in the first game, 4-2 over Sutton Utd, was followed by the same scoreline in reverse against Boreham Wood. More about them later. After that we went on a reasonable run, recording five out of six wins. We never won more than two in a row for the rest of the season, but did finish with four unbeaten towards the end of the season.

Being about as midtable as you can get for most of the season, we never troubled the playoff planners or the lower league fixture compilers.

A 6-2 victory at Croydon Atheltic (including a hattrick for one of my Central Defenders) was followed by a solid 3-1 win at fellow mid table side Havant & Waterlooville. My heart sank when we drew Boreham Wood in the 4th qualifying round, and sure enough they did us 2-0 at home

More cup goals, as we beat Weston-super-Mare 6-1 on their own patch, before beating high-flying Dorchester 3-0. Blue Square Bet Premier side Dover ended our procession towards Wembley with a 2-0 home defeat.

Next season
Although I stayed within my wage budget at all times, appearance bonuses ate into the club's overdraft, and I fully expect to struggle to be able to offer the deals my players want for their second season at the club. Until I can end some contracts, I can't really offer any more. Therefore, July will be a critical month and it will depend on how patient the players I want to keep are prepared to be. This could be a long building project.

Targets:
Try to reach the playoffs.
Try to keep my wage bill about £1000/week lower (I may not get much choice in this!)

Thanks, problem is I genuinely fear within a season we could be back in the Championship. We have been given decent budgets to play with, but also a 3000 seat stadium expansion which will involve another large bankloan. If I can get the right players in, or these turn out to be better than I think, we may survive in 17th. 40 points is the traditional target isnt it?

Sorry havent been giving much details in some of my updates. I sold him about 2 or 3 seasons back, as he wanted ridiculous amounts for his new contract. Werder Bremen bought him for £2.9 mill - pure profit, got him originally on a free. My current strikers are just as classy.

Final Table (13th)

A solid first season in League One all up, especially given star striker Joakim Skaane left for the Swiss league in a £500K deal in pre-season and was never really replaced. Started okay, suffered a big dip in form to hit the relegation spots at Christmas, mixed results had us just outside the drop zone at the start of February, before a good run at the end saw us finish comfortably in mid-table. We missed an absolute bucketload of chances all year and conceded a lot of soft goals, which was frustrating, but also gave me hope when we were in a relegation battle as we were rarely outplayed in general terms, and always created chances.

One thing that did annoy me however was how many clubs seemed to be able to get top players on loan from Premiership clubs. As an example, this guy turned out for Leyton Orient for half a season. Yeah, they may have a link with Tottenham, but are you honestly telling me no lower Prem or Championship clubs were a better option?

Cups

FA Cup - Lost 0-1 at L2 side Walsall in the 2nd Round.
League Cup - Lost 0-1 at L1 side Brighton in the 1st Round (getting sick of playing them in every cup).
Johnstone's Paint Trophy - Lost 1-3 to L1 side Bournemouth in the Semi Final.

Notable Players

Mark Barker - He had to make the step up early due to an injury to Baxter, and he kept his spot for most of the season even when both keepers were fit. Very solid, despite his age and a defence prone to losing concentration. I have high hopes for him.

Lukas Charvat - Our most consistent defender. Signed a new contract despite higher level interest too.

Carl Barrett - Our trusty vice-captain was again the first picked all season, and had no troubles with the step up.

Roger Chapman - Signed for £60K from fellow L1 strugglers Bournemouth in January, he made an immediate impact in a play-making role, including a midfield hat-trick against his old side. Then tore his calf.

Édson - Amazing signing. Brazilian with a German second nationality, one of my scouts found him while on trial with Championship club Cardiff. They didn't have a manager at the time, so I snapped him up on a free.

Karim Annan - The standard now from my Ghanaian winger. Was dynamic for two thirds of the season, and missed the other third through various injuries.

Gelu Plesca - My player of the season. Top scorer with 13 goals, all from a right wing, and he chipped in with a number of assists as well.

Next season...

Finish top half, and increase my home grown quota.

Overall a great season. Good EURO run, poor domestic cup runs and a season finish as 2nd. For a long time, I believed we could actually finish as champions, but it is extremely hard to compete vs a superb playing Man Utd, who only conceded 24 goals in 38 league games and further more won the double.

Season started with us being ranked 44th in the world. A huge increase due to last seasons good run in the EURO Cup.

For an unknown reason, chairman decided to put some money in the bank, despite our finances being ok. Those finances were quickly put to use to increase our training facilities. Found a feeder club in China to increase our merchandise, but board won't let us go to china and show our colors, and neither does our affiliate desire to come to England

Didn't buy any expensive players this season, but did buy some good looking youngsters, and especially keepers to help us in a needed area in the future, as we cannot afford any of the current "star" keepers.

Domestic Cups were a joke. 4th round exit in the League Cup to Cardiff 3-2 loss (Cardiff lost in the finals) In the FA Cup we struggled to a 0-0 home to Blackburn, who in return killed us 3-1 away.

Euro Cup was alot more fun thu. Advanced from grp stages with 18 pts and Lazio being our hardest challenge with a 2-0 win both home and away. 1st round saw us against Fernebache. 2-0 away and 3-0 home. 2nd round vs Wolves another 2-0 home/away. In the Q/F we were the only English team left and drew Valencia. I was sure this was it for us but a 2-1 away and 3-2 home win advanced us to Semi Finals, where Sevilla waited. Having just beat Valencia morale was high, but despite that we were punished 3-0 away and only managed to play 1-1 at home.

Best game of the season was a 6-0 humiliation to Man City at home (press)

Players of the season:

GK:
- Phillip Salibur: New signing from Lens. Probably our best keeper according to staff. Only position we are really hurt in.

DEF:
- Carl Flynn: 31 year old Flynn who has been with us for 11 seasons is unfortunately not in the top 3 defenders anymore. He is still a good player who is now devoting his time tutoring youngsters.
- Lars Andersen: Is getting better and better. Key in defense with Cristiano.
- Cristiano: Same story as Lars.
- Abubakar Tagoe: Played mostly defense, but also midfield this season (to give Flynn some games) Really strong overall player.

MID:
- Chris Hayter: Bargain signing for 2.4mill from Man Utd. Amazing tireless DM
- Pirulito: Had another great season with 7 goals and 10 assists.
- Schwaab: Having trouble deciding now whether to play Pirulito or him on left winger.
- Busão: Played both MC and AMR. Versatile and really strong.
- Marcos Costa: Looking at his stats, I am amazed at his nose for assists. 41 games 29 assists.
- Carlos: As with Hayter, completely controlling defending areas on the midfield.

ATT:
- Giuseppe Cutolo: Had a good season, but nothing remarkable.
- Wayne Hall: Didn't score as many goals as last season, but I can live with his contribution of 39 goals and 15 assists.

With the new upgrades to facilities, 24 coaches and 1 year from moving into a new stadium. The future is looking bright at Hitchin.

Just been ticking along nicely in my Chester game, obviously I'm more suited to managing in the north. Boston United just delivered some serious pain to fellow promoted team St Albans though, thrashing them 9-2! With 6 goals from their awesome regen! Never seen a team this low down get a regen like that from their own youth system! (Don't know why I can't even make an offer for him though?)

It's a surprising promotion to be honest. I signed a number of players to broaden the squad, especially in midfield but a lot of the team was already in place. The squad was thus pretty good already. I'm very happy I won the plays-offs, I finished second 10 points clear of the 3rd placed Barrow so we deserved it. But while league winners FC Halifax weren't untouchable they were to consistent for my tired team in the end. Given that the team has now promoted to seasons in a row, I'll be very satisfied with a mid-table finish next season.

FM12 Remarks
- Teams in unplayable leagues are often pretty strong
- I hate the endless stream of press conferences
- Morale is even more important than before, a team on a run is unstoppable. But I like the fact that you can slam your team during half-time and they will actually turn around the game in the 2nd half sometimes
- Some news items are ridiculous, more in particular during the play-offs you get comments that are pointless
(example: I win the first legs of the semi's 1-0 against Gloucester, the return ends on 2-2 and the news item is: "Northwich fans will be frustrated by their side's 2-2 draw". The fans should be dancing on the table for qualifying for the final.)
- I'm also getting fed up with the "Team X is afraid they will lose Manager Y"-news items
- The confidence report is still stupid: I release a redundant striker on a free in august and until March I have to hear that they are slightly disappointed with his departure. This while I'm fighting for promotion and the guy hasn't even found a new club yet
- I win promotion with a team that was destined for mid-table AND I DON'T GET NOMINATED FOR MANAGER OF THE YEAR. Idiots.

Season 2016/17 Review - East Thurrock United in the npower League 2

Not too shabby for our first season in League 2! Got off to a bit of a shaky start, but that was expected. We're hard to break down though, and in the long run the more adventurous teams lost points and went on bad runs while we kept a steady pace. My counter tactic isn't much of a crowd-pleaser but if it's good for something, it's consistently getting something out of most games. Come mid-season we were surprisingly among the front-runners and thanks to avoiding any serious injury problems this time around, managed to hang on all the way!

Squad | Transfers

Most of the offensive players are struggling with the step-up, especially Wright who's a mere shadow of last season's good form. My tendency to poach foreigners has also put us in a bit of a tight spot in terms of matching HG requirements. All things considered, my focus in the coming pre-season will have to be securing good English attackers. Possibly get a new GK as Bouzanis isn't looking so impressive anymore.

Finances

Unremarkable. The Paint Trophy final at Wembley probably helped a bit, but we're by and large in the same financial position as last year.

Aim for next season: Stay up. We got the promotion playing off scrappy counters and most players are still on old P/T contracts. I'm not holding my breath for another upset.

June - August 11 Round up

24/06/11. The day Bradford Park Avenue made the best decision in their history and shockingly replaced the man who brought them up with former sunday league flop John Thornton.

Looking at the squad, the media had quite understandably tipped PA for a short stay in the league, expecting a 22nd place finish.

There was one gem in the squad, Medi Abalimba proving to be an inspired signing from the previous regime.

Thornton's scouts pointed him in the direction of what appeared to be a great brazillian defender, but one who had no chance of obtaining a work permit. This angered him, and the scout was told he needed to find someone special to keep his job, much to Thornton's chagrin he pulled it out of the bag, 17 year old Kristian James looking like a star already, with L1 potential, and star Man City defender ('s brother) Francois Kompany. Other signings have included, among others, the unfortunately named young scottish centre back Gordon Dick, and yet another Man City defender's brother Aaron Lescott.

Thornton believed his squad was complete, decided to get straight to the season, leaving the assistant to deal with the friendlies. Unfortunately there was one massive oversight, come match day Thornton realised he had no left backs at the club. He quickly panic bought two young left backs, including an Andy Carroll esque transfer fee for unproven Michele Picano.

The season didnt start well, a makeshift 3-3-2-2 formation to offset the lack of a left back ended with a flattering 1-3 defeat to Halifax, then came the biggest game of the season the home derby v the much fancied Guiseley, before an ill tempered 2-3 defeat to Hinckley. Up came a home game against Lowestoft to end the month, the first game to showcase the new 4-1-3-2 PA are using now, and with 9 out of 11 first choice players available. A much needed performance to fill the players with optimism.

Next on the agenda, is to sort out the away form and keep the discipline, as the 2 defeats have seen 5 yellows and 1 red in each game, the bank balance cant afford 23 fines either.

Amazing how much a single season in the Premiership can do for a clubs finances. We got a few extra random sponsorship deals, which at least means we arent laughable sponsorship wise anymore! Was given a large transfer budget and significant wage budget increase, which I still have plenty of left. I didnt end up buying in many more players, which makes our finish this season even more impressive.

We managed a great run to the Semi Finals of the FA Cup, where we lost 3-0 to West Brom. If we hadnt had loads of key injuries throughout the seaosn, I reckon we could have finished 1 or 2 places hihger. Never felt like I was in a relegation battle so am delighted with the season.

We just need to build on it for next season. Already have a couple of new players due in, but worried my goalies min release clause could be met and that I may need to hunt for another Prem quality keeper. Definitely need to continue to just make small additions to the squad, hopefully with more and more quality.

Have already persuaded the board to improve my training facilities, and before this seaosn started we got an expansion to the stadium, so we are now 12,000 all seater capacity, which is starting to feel a bit like a stadium! Cant ask to improve youth as we are apparently renting youth facilities.

The aim for the season was promotion having spent last season getting to know the division. Summer signings included a prolific striker and a few experienced defenders which gave me confidence that the team was complete and ready to take the division by storm. A slow start to the season was a bit of a worry but as soon as my strikers dusted off their scoring boots, there was no looking back. A twenty game unbeaten run helped the team open a big lead by February and the team cruised to the title to do the double.

Canvey Island - 2012/13 End of Season Update - BSS
Timed to perfection...

League: (Positions) Well to call this unexpected would be a bit of an understatement. Started horrendously with 5 defeats out of the first 7 games (including a 7-1 spanking at home to Tonbridge) but this unbeaten run put us firmly in the chase for the second half of the season.

Even with 3 games to go the gap between us and long-time leaders Farnborough was 6 points (at one stage around January it had been around the 15 point mark), which was duly turned to 3 after beating them; then a mad penultimate round of games involving two different 5-0 scorelines which favoured us massively put us in the driving seat with one to play. Even though we tried our best to throw it away on the last day of the season, automatic promotion was secured.

Have to say that whilst Farnborough did pretty much gift us the chance, we were playing pretty well at the end of the season ourselves.

Cups
FA Cup : Slightly disappointed, threw away the lead against Eastbourne.

FA Trophy : A magnificent run to the quarters, including beating Grimsby in extra time, but the Darlington game was a step too far; even if we almost came from 4-0 down in the game

Squad (1)(2) and Transfers : A large squad at this level for sure, but it was more players coming in quicker than leaving than anything else. Quite a fair few of the fringe/reserve players will be let go in the summer so size should become more manageable next season.

Player of the Season : Robert Hall - AMC

Almost gave it to Ladapo for his near 20 goals since joining in November, but Hall was instrumental in the final run of games that secured the title so it really had to go to him. Not a bad prospect for the near future at 22 too.

Finances : The less said about this the better I think...

Currently sitting 2nd after 18 games in League One, but have decided to put the save on hold and have a crack with one of the lower league databases. Playing with Hall Road Rangers FC in the Northern Counties East League, so should be a bit of fun. Running an update thread in the Careers forum too.

Will definitely continue to follow people's progress in here though.

I wanted to start slow, building a base for a club that can get promoted and stay up. I signed a lot of players because from experience in the lowe leagues it's better to have a bigger squad of weaker players with just a few 'stars' and rotate than lot of tired but better players. We started unexpectedly good and after a string of wins I started to think it's gonna be too easy. But then came the slump and we started to be hit and miss. We were never really threatened throughout the season to go below the playoff spot but at this time my appetite was higher and I wanted automatic promotion. Luckily for me our form went up in the final stages of the league and we managed to beat AFC Telford on away goals for automatic promotion. Tough luck for them, as they were a better team than us, and ultimately the have also lost the playoff. In FA cup it was a dramatic performance with us losing to Northwich and the FA Trophy was only little better because we survived till 3rd round. None of the players was worth mentioning, needless to say that my best player was already in the squad - Matty Wolfenden was my best striker and player throughout a season, unfortunately he decided to continue his career elsewhere and didn't sign new contract.

League Summary (1 - 2 - 3):-

A fantastic first season for Bedford, we finished 4th and took part in the play-offs. We managed to beat Tamworth 3-2 on aggregate which set up the final against Darlington. We hadn't beaten Darlo in either league game and unfortunately we didn't manage to this time. 3-1 was the final score and it didn't really flatter them, we didn't turn up for the first half and when we got the goal, Darlo just shut up shop.


FA Cup Summary:-

We had a pretty decent go at the FA Cup this year, reaching the first round proper in the process. Comfortable wins over Hucknall, Witham and Brackley saw us host Gillingham in front of a 1600 strong crowd at The New Eyrie, but the Gills overran us. They play two leagues above us and it certainly showed, 5-2 was the final score and despite our best efforts, they were just too strong for us.


FA Trophy Summary:-

The FA Trophy is a cup I want to win before I leave the non-league, I'm hoping that I will only have a few years left to win it as I want to get out of the non-league as soon as possible. This years adventure saw us drop out in the second round. In the third qualifying round we faced and beat Eastwood 4-1, then we played Truro in the first round and we managed 4 goals again this time with a clean sheet. The second round draw paired us with Ebbsfleet away and the BSP side ran out 2-0 winners.


Team Summary:-

I made alot of transfers throughout the season as I struggled to find a settled side despite managing a 4th place finish. One place I did manage to sort out was the strikers with my first choice pair netting 48 goals between them. The midfield and defence wasn't quite so settled although the goalkeeper shirt was kept by the same person all season.

Goalkeeper:-
- TIM SANDERCOMBE joined on loan from relegated Farnborough, he probably wasn't the best option I could have chosen but he did a decent job through out the season.

Central Defenders:-
- MARK POWER was the second player I signed as was first choice center back for the whole season. He was a rock at the back and we needed someone as good next too him.
- JACK DEAMAN only joined us in December and injuries restriced him to just 14 starts and 2 substitute appearances.
- JAMES BRADLEY was brought in just before Deaman and ended up as backup for when he was injured, but unfortunately Bradley had a few injuries himself and only managed 5 starts.
- GAVIN HOYTE was already at the club and was also club captain before I took over. Although not as good as players I brought in, injuries meant he still played 37 times coming off the bench 11 times.

Wide Defenders:-
- TOM SMITH didn't join until late November but made the right back spot his own. He made 25 appearances and I'm trying to renew his contract.
- AARON AKURUKA was the starting right back until Smith joined, then had to settle to playing second fiddle managing 17 appearances over the season.
- SAMIR BIHMOUTINE joined in the late September and was the regular left back for the season, starting 30 times and coming off the bench just once.
- NIALL COPERTHWAITE similarly to Akuruka, was the starting left back until Samir joined and took it from him. Made 18 appearances with 2 coming from the bench.

Central Midfielders:-
- ADAM FORSHAW joined in late December, he is the best midfielder we have at the club and I'm currently renewing his contract. He made 22 starts and came of the bench twice.
- JAKE NICHOLSON was my final signing this season, coming in at the end of December he made 11 appearances after an injury in March kept him out for the rest of the season.
- AGUSTÍN BATTIPIEDI was my very first signing of my career. He was the hardman in midfield, winning back possession and breaking down opposition attacks very well.

Wide Midfielders:-
- CHARLES BANYA was the first choice right winger since he joined in early December. Making 27 appearances and getting 11 assists.
- JAMIE YATES joined in late July and was going to be first choice and started off well making 11 appearances, scoring 2 goals and getting 2 assists, but then suffered a bad injury which kept him out for 3 months.
- LEON OSBORNE kept the left wing position ever since he joined in early December making 28 appearances, scoring 8 goals and getting 10 assists in the process.
- JERNEADE MEADE was first choice until Osborne came, then he was used mostly as an substitute with 11 of his 23 appearances coming off the bench.

Strikers:-
- CHRISTIAN OKPALA was the first striker to join us and was first choice for most of the season, he managed 25 goals and 7 assists.
- JACOB HAZEL joined us in mid-August, and along with Okpala kept his shirt for most of the season. He racked up 23 and 14 assists. Both strikers' contracts are up at the end of this season. I'm letting Opkala go but I'm tryin to renew Hazel's, although his agent is making it damn near impossible.
