FM12 - A.S. ROMA

Brief History

Associazione Sportiva Roma, commonly referred to as Roma, is a professional Italian football club based in Rome.Founded by a merger in 1927, Roma have articipated in the top-tier of Italian football for all of their existence but one season in the early 50s (1951–52). For their 60th season in a row (79th overall), Roma are competing in Serie A for 2011–12.

Roma have won Serie A three times, first in 1941–42 then in 1982–83 and again in 2000–01, as well as winning nine Coppa Italia titles and two Supercoppa Italiana titles. On the European stage Roma won an Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1960–61, coming close to European Cup victory in 1983–84 (lost the one-legged final played at home against Liverpool after a penalty shootout), and finishing as runners-up in the UEFA Cup for 1990–91 (two-legged aggregate defeat against Internazionale).

Home games are currently played at the Stadio Olimpico, a venue they share with city rivals Lazio. With a capacity of over 72,000, it is the second largest of its kind in Italy, with only San Siro able to seat more. In September 2009 the club unveiled plans to build a new 55,000-capacity stadium in the western suburbs of Rome. Its design was be modeled after English football stadiums with the objective being to give fans a closer view of the pitch. In September 2011, it was announced that the new president, Thomas DiBenedetto, had reached an agreement with the mayor of Rome, Gianni Alemanno, to have the new stadium completed by 2014. Like the previous plan by Sensi, this new stadium is to be modeled after English stadiums.

End of the Sensi era

In the summer of 2010, the Sensi family agreed to relinquish their control of AS Roma as part of a debt-settlement agreement. This brought an end to the presidential reign of the Sensi family who had presided over the club since 1993. Until a new owner was appointed, Rosella Sensi would continue her directorial role of the club. The 2010-11 season had once again seen Roma start off with mixed fortunes on both a domestic and European level. These included losses against teams like Cagliari, Brescia and a 2-0 defeat against Bayern Munich in the group stages of the Champions League (a match which saw manager Claudio Ranieri openly criticised by his own players). However, these were accompanied by victories against Inter Milan and a sensational victory against Bayern Munich in the return fixture, which saw Roma fight back from 0-2 down at half-time to emerge as 3-2 winners. Following a series of poor results which saw Roma engage in a winless-streak of five consecutive matches, Claudio Ranieri resigned as head coach in February 2011, and former striker Vincenzo Montella was appointed as caretaker manager until the end of the season. It was also during this season that Roma icon, Francesco Totti, scored his 200th Serie A goal against Fiorentina in March of 2011 - becoming only the sixth ever player to achieve such a feat.

On 16 April 2011, the takeover contract was signed. Lead by Thomas R. DiBenedetto, through "DiBenedetto AS Roma LLC" (along with James Pallotta, Michael Ruane and Richard D'Amore), would acquired 67.1% shares (or 88,918,686 shares) of A.S. Roma Spa (the clubitself, valued €60.3 million), entire ownership of "ASR Real Estate S.r.l." and "Brand Management S.r.l." from Sensi's "Roma 2000 S.r.l." (a subsidiary of Italpetroli) for a total of €70.3 million. The new holding company, "NEEP Roma Holding S.p.A.", was a joint venture of "DiBenedetto AS Roma LLC" and Unicredit S.p.A., in a 60-40 ratio. The transaction date was scheduled on 31 July 2011, but delayed to 18 August.

The new ownership immediately went into effect by making significant changes in the club, hiring Walter Sabatini as director of football and former Spanish international and FC Barcelona B coach Luis Enrique as manager; the first high-profile signings from the duo were attacking midfielder Erik Lamela from River Plate, forward Bojan Krkić from Barcelona, goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg from AFC Ajax and unattached defender Gabriel Heinze. The club also sold and released high earner, namely defender John Arne Riise, keeper Doni, forward Jérémy Ménez and Mirko Vučinić.

After the formal takeover on 18 August, Roma also bought forward Pablo Daniel Osvaldo, midfielder Miralem Pjanić, Fernando Gago and defender Simon Kjær, as well as youngster Fabio Borini, made the club costed more than 40 million if the loan deal were successfully turned to definitive deal.

In ownership, the "NEEP Roma Holding S.p.A." also started a total takeover, which the company would purchase the shares from the minority shareholder and public market (43,604,610 shares or 32.903%), for €0.6781 per shares, below the half-year and 3-months average price, but the same price as takeover price in April.

Supporters and Rivalries

Roma is the fifth most supported football club in Italy behind Juventus, Internazionale, Milan and Napoli with around 6% of Italian football fans supporting the club (according to the Doxa Institute-L'Espresso’s research of April 2006). Historically the largest section of Roma supporters in the city of Rome have come from the inner-city, especially Testaccio.

The traditional ultras group of the club was Commando Ultrà Curva Sud commonly abbreviated as CUCS; this group was founded by the merger of many smallers groups and was considered one of the most historic in the history of European football. However, by the mid-1990s CUCS had been usurped by rival factions and ultimately broke up. Since that time, the Curva Sud of the Stadio Olimpico has been controlled by more right-wing groups; A.S. Roma Ultras, Boys, Giovinezza and others. The oldest group Fedayn is apolitical however and politics is not the raison d'être of Roma, just a part of their overall identity. In September 2009 the club unveiled plans to build a new 55,000-capacity stadium in Rome's western suburbs.

The most known club anthem and motto is Roma,Roma,Roma by local singer Antonello Venditti. The title roughly means "Roma is not to be questioned, it is to be loved" and is sung before each match, the song Grazie Roma, by the same singer, is played at the end of victorious home games. Recently, the main riff of The White Stripes song Seven Nation Army has also become widely popular at games.

In Italian football Roma are a club with many rivalries; first and foremost is their rivalry with Lazio, the club who they share the Stadio Olimpico stadium with. The derby between the two is called the Derby della Capitale, it is amongst the most heated and emotional footballing rivalries in the world. The fixture has seen some occasional instances of violence in the past including the death of Lazio fan, Vincenzo Paparelli in 1979–80 as a result of an emergency flare fired from the Curva Sud, and the abandonment of a game in march 2004, following unfounded rumours of a fatality which led to violence outside the stadium.

With Napoli, Roma also compete in the Derby del Sole rivalry meaning the "Derby of the Sun". Nowadays fans also consider other Serie A giants like Juventus (rivalry born especially in the 1980s), Milan and Internazionale (increased in recent years) among their rivals as these four compete for the top four spots in the league table to secure a spot in the Champions League.

Conflict with English fans

There have been a number of instances of conflict in recent years between some Roma supporters and fans of English clubs, pointing to an apparent dislike for English fans in some Giallorossi supporters. One reason forwarded for this is the defeat to Liverpool in the 1984 European Cup Final at the Stadio Olimpico, and the subsequent violence outside the stadium which saw a number of Liverpool fans stabbed. Since then, there have been further instances of some English supporters being attacked and stabbed in Rome, including incidents in 2001 when Liverpool visited Roma twice and subsequent clashes with Middlesbrough fans in 2006 and Manchester United fans in 2007. In March 2009, a coach carrying Arsenal supporters was attacked by a group of Roma "Ultras" just outside the Stadio Olimpico. The coach's windows were smashed and at least one person entered the vehicle, letting off a flare and stabbed a supporter in the knee. Arsenal had posted advice to their fans on how to avoid routes taken by Roma Ultras.

Stadium

The Stadio Olimpico is the main and largest sports facility of Rome. It is located within the Foro Italico sports complex on the north of the city. An asset of the Italian National Olympic Committee, the structure is intended primarily for football. It is the venue of the final Coppa Italia, the home venue of the Italian national rugby union team and Italy's national athletics stadium. It also occasionally hosts concerts of pop music and events of various kinds.

Squad Analysis

Goalkeeper

Maarten Stekelenburg

steke.jpg

A new arrival at the Olimpico. The Dutch No1 and former Ajax player is an easy choice to start between the sticks. A great shot stopper and big physical presence.

Gianluca Curci

Primavera graduate. Curci has been a backup keeper at Roma for years. He was great last season for Sampdoria, which prompted Roma to buy their 50% share back.

Bogdan Lobont

Former Ajax player, who has been at Roma for the last two seasons. A good shot stopper, who will do a good job when needed.

Defence

Juan

Juan1.jpg

Brazilian center back Juan has been at the club for four seasons, after joining from Bayer Leverkusen. A strong, ball playing defender, who proves his quality with the amount of Brazil caps he has.

Nicolas Burdisso

Signed on 28 August 2010 for a €8 million transfer fee. He signed a 4-year contract, in which he would earn €3.8 million his first year, increasing to €4.5 million in the next 3 years.

A strong, brave player. Great in the air and throws himself into every challenge. A good foil for a more ball playing center back like Kjaer or Juan.

Marco Cassetti

At 34 years old, the right back may not have many years on a pitch left ahead of him. A probable starter for the first season. Equally good at defending and attacking the wing.

Aleandro Rosi

A good backup for both full back positions. Quicker than Cassetti, but a lacking in technical skill.

Cicinho

The Brazilian can play anywhere down the right hand side. Better at attacking than defending though. He's a candidate for the transfer list due to his £67k a week wages.

Midfield

Daniele De Rossi

daniele-de-rossi.jpg

The Primavera graduate, and vice captain of the side. A tenacious defensive midfielder and driving force when the chips are down. Sometimes let down by his temperament.

Simone Perrotta

A really good box to box option. Perfect Teamwork and Work Rate stats. At 34 years old, he's coming to the end of his career, but is very useful for a season or two.

David Pizarro

Quality technical player and a great deep lying playmaker. Will probably fight it out with Gago for a first team spot.

Fabio Simplicio

Acting as a mini-wrecking ball; versatile, but a true rumbling attacking midfielder, who physically resembles an actual wrecking ball. He’s a nuisance for opposition defenders. A great option in midfield when the game is getting a bit too predictable.

Attack

Francesco Totti

totti.jpg

Mr Roma. Captain. The Talisman of the side, and a true trequartista if ever there was one. He is one of the greatest Italian players of all time, and undoubtedly the greatest ever Roma player. He is in a very small club of players to score over 200 Serie A goals. At 34 years old, hes coming to the end of his career.

Marco Borriello

Roma's strong target man. Quite small compared to others in his role, but great at winning balls in the air and good key stats for a striker too.

Fabio Borini

Signed on loan from Parma, after they had signed him on a free transfer from Chelsea. The youngster is a classic poacher and has a lot of room for improvement.

New Players

Simon Kjaer

kjaer.jpg

Former Palermo player. One of the most highly rated young center backs in the world. The 22 year old Denmark international is on loan at Roma from Wolfsburg, and can be bought for £6m.

Fernando Gago

Fernando-Gago-Roma.jpg

Loaned from Real Madrid this summer, the Argentine midfielder is the perfect deep lying playmaker. He has brilliant technique and ball recycling skills. Can be bought for £6m.

Miralem Pjanic

pjanic.jpg

Brilliant young Bosnian attacking midfielder. Has the potential to be one of the best in the world. Signed from Lyon.

Pablo Osvaldo

osvaldo-1.jpg

His second stint in Seria A, after he left Bologna for Espanyol and impressed in La Liga last season. The Argentine Italian has been likened to Pippo Inzaghi for his close range finishing.

New Players

Jose Angel

angel.jpg

Young Spanish left back who arrived from Sporting Gijon. Quick and good going forward. Lots of potential.

Gabriel Heinze

heinze.jpg

Veteran Argentine defender, who has played for Man Utd, Real Madrid and Marseille amongst others. Provides some much needed experience at the back.

Erik Lamela

lamela.jpg

Argentine wonderkid who recently signed from River Plate. Brilliant close control and one of the best dribblers at the club. Massive potential.

[thread=277317]Erik Lamela thread[/thread]

Bojan

bojan3.jpg

Arguably the marquee signing of the summer. The La Masia youth product is yet another massive prospect and can play as a main striker or on the right of a front three.

Yeah some brilliant signings this season, with the new American money. Not really that much to fix squad wise.

Right back is the one problem area, with Cassetti being too old and Rosi being too mental. :D You can keep the core of the squad together for years.

Lovely OP, GavinLP.

Just downloading the demo now and not sure yet if I'll get the full game. Still, I'm excited about this new team and finally having money to spend, without forgetting having a Scudetto winning Primavera. When I've finished downloading the demo I'll put up a couple of screenshots of the biggest prospects. :)

Taking money out of the equation INTEGRAL, there's a really good squad of players to work with from the start. 75% can only get better too.

Steke, Kjaer, Gago, Pjanic, Osvaldo and Bojan are as good as anything in the league.

I'll ignore the relegation bit. Mental.

fm12 seams very similar to last years game, the interface look a bit different, but its mostly the same thing, just a bit more polished

will have a go at Roma when im done with my Depor quick start, already have a quick start loaded and saved ;)

Yeah some brilliant signings this season
I would not fully agree with this, we did get some good deals done (for the money invested), but only got one player for the 4 regions of the team that was in dire need of improvements, so the team was not significantly improved at all compared to last year

Pjanic and Bojan cannot play in Serie A...25 million euro is too much for these 2 players..Both of these cannot play among strong players...

Roma needs players such as Hamsik, G.Inler, Cavani, Vucinic (still)...

What regions are you talking about?

I take it right back is one. Can't think of anywhere else.

-we need a new running midfielder to give more drive to the center of the pitch, both gago and pjanic are decent players, but we already had enough players of that kind, a player in the Ramires mold (or similar to Perotta back when he still had legs) is what I would have liked to see

-fullbacks, Angel have been awesome so far, and I kinda like Cassetti, but we have no back up plan here and Cassetti aint geting any younger, a right back is more or less a must, while one more left back would not really hurt

-wingers, with the departure of our two best options here, we only made like for like replacements, when what we needed was more squad depth and pace down the wings, Boriello is no wide attacker, the same can be said about Osvaldo and to some extent Bojan

Link to post

Osvaldo has been very good at AMR for me he has 11 goals and 8 assists in 18 games with an average rating of 7.56. If he gets injured though there is not really a decent back up.
Bojan did really well on AMR for my Barca team on fm11, and I could picture Borini doing a decent job to...should be worth a try anyway if Osvaldo gets injured

Sounds about right. I read they were looking at Sandro irl, and he's exactly the type of player you refer to.

Agree that we need backup full backs.

Not sure if not having wingers is a problem with the current 4-3-3 formation. As it comes from the full backs. Obviously its a problem if people want to veer away from the tactics imposed irl.

I was mostly speaking from a real life perspective here, I just simply feel we are to slow and sluggish when I have watched the team play, we'll might be fine in serie a, but if we are to become better, or do well in europe we need more pace down the wings and atleast one player with legs in the center...im sure I can do well with the current squad on the game thought!

I might be a bit nostalgic, but I miss having Mancini on out wide, he never had anything like consistancy and in all honesty was never really that good, but if we are to play like we do now and strive for some sort of barcelona replication, we really could use someone with a similar playing style

I think Totti is wide left with Os up front though.

I wouldn't play a high defensive line, as there's not much pace at the back. I'd probably onlt have the two cm's and Totti making through balls too. Makes for better ball retention imo.

Roma have been playing the first formation IRL mostly. I wouldn't advise putting Totti at left wing, he hasn't got the legs for it.

Just finished the demo using the above line up and finished second in Serie A scored 39 goals but conceded 17 in the 16 league games we played. Lost 4 games one understandable which was a 3-2 loss to Napoli but I don't have a clue how we lost some of our other matches maybe we got complacent. Losses at home to to Sienna 2-0 and Udinese 2-1 as well as an away loss to Cesena 2-1. Best wins were home wins 4-1 over Juventus and 6-3 against Lazio, we also went to the San Siro against an unbeaten AC Milan and ripped them apart 3-0.

The best performers were the attacking players Lamela getting an average rating of 7.67, 13 goals and 13 assists in 23 games. Kjaer got 5 goals in 25 games as well as 3 assists and averaged 7.47. Osvaldo got a 7.42 with 13 goals and 8 assists in 23 games. Borriello took a while to get going and was pretty poor for the first 5 or 6 matches then he came alive ending up with 15 goals in 20 games and an average rating of 7.45.

The finances are worrying ending the demo £12 million in debt despite not signing anyone the only other expenses were the costs to get De Rossi on a new contract which was around £3 million in signing on and agent fees. The squad is good but does need a bit of strengthening especially in the fullback areas and personally in the full game I will be looking for a top class striker. Lavezzi and Rossi are the best strikers the club can attract but getting the finances needed to sign them could be a problem. In the full game I will got for P. Cisse from Freiburg I had him at Sunderland and the lad is a beast of a striker.

I haven't played in Italy since FM09 I think it was. There is no prize money and the TV money is paid monthly? If my team is already in debt by the end of the demo apart from selling someone how do you make a profit or at least get some cash at the end of the season?

Just started a Roma game guys,

Just about to play my first competitive match. My only signings are loanees. Mathieu Bodmer, and Daniel Sturridge, and made Totti my assistant manager :D - Will keep you updated

That is wicked.

Okay, just barely got past Helsingborgs in the Europa League 4th Quals.

I say barely, because I needed a late equalizer against them at home. Then scored 3 at their place, and after scoring the 3rd, they made a comeback and scored 3 with about 25 to go. The thing is, I think its Maarten's fault. He's getting beaten from ridiculous angles, and from awful efforts. They had 6 shots on target, and scored from 3 of them. Its really annoying

Group stage - I've probably been given the worst away games possible. I've got to go to; Russia, Norway & Ukraine to play; Rubin, Rosenborg and Dnipro.

Damn you Europa League Draw

In other news. My opening game of the season, is against A.C. Milan, at the San Siro

Just got the game and started a Roma save. First thing I did was send all the loanees back to their respective clubs. Next I signed Davide Astori for 6M and made offers for Ivan Bandalovski, Mateo Kovacic and Lucas Andersen and sold Lobont and Okaka. If I manage to sign Bandalovski one of Cicinho or Rosi (probably the former due to Rosi's versatility). Could do with a couple of wingers, but I'm confident the scouts will come up with someone soon.

In the meanwhile my preferred line-up is:

GK: Stekelenburg

RB: Cassetti

CB: Juan

CB: Astori

LB: Jose Angel

CM: De Rossi

CM: Pizarro

RW: Osvaldo

AM: Pjanic

LW: Lamela

ST: Totti

Right...

Just started up my save after getting to grips with the new features, etc.

Started by cutting all the dead wood. Raising £6m from the sales of Cicinho, Lobont, Taddei, Greco and Antunes.

Then started playing with tactics. Trying to fit in the strongest players possible, the shape is a 4-4-2 diamond:

Picture11.png

Don't really know how to assign player roles yet. For example, Gago and Pizarro are both deep lying playmakers but I don't know whether that will work.

Hoping to sign a Right Back and iron out the tactical creases in pre season.

Started by cutting all the dead wood. Raising £6m from the sales of Cicinho, Lobont, Taddei, Greco and Antunes.

Hoping to sign a Right Back and iron out the tactical creases in pre season.

Basically done the same - I got rid of Pizarro and Perrotta too as they are getting on a bit. Have a little bit of dough left but not too much. Gonna go in for Van der Wiel, not too sure who else though as numbers are short. Who have you gone in for??
