Playing without internet

I was in my girlfriends salon yesterday (she was giving it a spring clean/freshen up). I had to man the phone and the desk while she was busy so thought ill play a bit of FM on the laptop.

First time ive really tried to play outside my house. There is no internet connection there and no matter what i tried i couldnt get it running. Steam was giving me the option of retrying internet connection or playing in offline mode. Even when i tried offline it still came up with an error.

Problem is im going on holiday to dominican in 2 weeks. Im taking my laptop for a couple of reasons (including watching celtic through the wifi incase the game isnt on anywhere) thought maybe a bit of FM on the plane to pass the time but this problem will probably arise again.. can anyone shed any light? thanks!

1. Start up Steam
2. Top-left corner Steam -> Go Offline

thats the problem mate... when im not connected to the net steam wont start up full stop...
