Hey I'm a noob to Network games

My friend and I are trying to set up a network game I installed via steam and he did not, he mentioned something like Hitachi or suchlike but I read on an affiliate that that is just for non-steam downloads. Can I please get an easy to understand workthrough list for the both sides and what should happen after each step.

Having much trouble in setting it up so thought this is the best place to ask.
