Inspired by Tony Hawker's San Marino thread and following my unsuccessful Qatar career, ended early by crash dumps, i bring you;

Malta

170px-Malta_Football_Association.svg.png

Ranked: 150th

Further info:

  • Bank of Malta Premier League European Ranking: 257th
  • Highest ranked Maltese team in Europe: Sliema Wanderers 338th
  • Malta CL places: 1 in preliminary qualifying round
  • Malta EL places: 3, 1 in Q2 and 2 in first qualifying round

It was a toss up between Malta and U.A.E and i went for the one lowest in the world rankings. This should be exciting and i'll keep you posted as I go.

I shall provide you with yearly updates, unless I join a Maltese club side when updates will be more regular.

Updates will include news, results and world rankings.

Thanks for reading :)

2010 Update

Ranked: 118th (An Improvement of 32 places)

Results:

maltamaltafixtures2.png

We got two good draws against Macedonia and Israel, then got arguably our best result of the season with a 4-2 victory over Latvia. Our 2-2 draw against Georgia was a bit disappointing, as they equalised in the 89th minute. We knew we'd lose to Croatia and the Belarus result was a bit harsh, to have been beaten by three goals wasn't representative of how well we did in the game. However, the results this year have been promising.

Our Most Impressive Result:

maltavlatviainformation.png

This leaves us in this position In European Championship Qualifying;

2011 to come :)

Well Done, you got some good results. With minnow nations are seem to find that you get better results if you play very defensive football:

-With a defensive formation such as, 5-4-1 or 4-5-1.

-Tightly mark, close down and go in hard on the majority of the opposition's players.

-Your strategy should be "contain".

-Your 1 striker should preferably be a target man.

This may not help but it helped me to beat Portugal U21 1-0 as Luxembourg U21 in FM2010.

2011 Update

Ranked: 126th ( down 8 places)

Results:

maltamaltafixtures.png

Awful awful year.

We finished the European Championship Qualifying like this;

uefaeuropeanfootballcha.png

At least we weren't last...

The awful year prompted me to do this;

And that led to this;

gettingjobatsangwann.png

The only job that was available was with San Gwann, Second bottom in the second division, but hopefully i can turn them around and maybe get them promoted, only here until the summer of 2012 so hopefully a stepping stone, once i get to a big club i can finally improve the players coming into the national team :)

Here was their position in the Bank of Valetta Second division when i joined on the 28th November 2011;

Next update will come at the end of the 2011/12 season :)

San Gwann - 2011/2012 Season

When i joined the club they were second bottom, the players were awful and it wasn't looking good.

But i got tonnes of free transfers and slowly started to get results. Finished 5th although i think we could have even got higher than that had we not had a few unlucky results.

20112012div2finaltable.png

Results after I joined:

sangwannresultswithmein.png

With San Gwann being in the second division I thought there was no point me staying here, it wouldn't improve the quality of the youth players very quickly and it would take two promotions to get even close to champions league football etc. So I refused the contract extension and am looking for a new club, there are a few top division sides with managers in insecure positions so I will wait.

Update next season :)

After leaving San Gwann I have found it very difficult to get a decent job, with the only jobs available in the third division leagues A and B which i don't really want.

For this reason I have spent a year out of work, and the only job i was offered in the 2012/2013 season was in fact Azerbaijan...

Hopefully in 2013/2014 i can get a top maltese job, the chairmen of the clubs in the top two leagues must be getting frustrated with their managers by now, previously not one manager has been sacked in these leagues!

On another note perhaps i should have stayed at San Gwann, as in 2012/2013, using the players I brought in, they got promoted to the first division.

2013/2014 Season

After being unemployed for a year i was finally offered a job by Senglea Athletic, in the Second division. At first I was wanting to hold out for a better club but when i thought back to how long i spent unemployed i took it, and decided to get this club into the top division and stay a few years like I should have at San Gwann!

When i joined on the 31st January the table looked like this:

sengleaapositionwhenjoi.png

(they were quite the draw specialists!)

And this improved to 4th by the end of the season;

sengleaa20132014finalta.png

I thought I could actually get the club promoted in this season but it wasn't to be, but the aim is definitely there for next season, with 14 of my own players coming in when the window opens! Other exciting news is that a consortium is trying to take over the club, there has been talk of another manager replacing me but i hope this doesn't come to fruition.

Malta have been doing badly, having drawn 1 game since i left, losing the rest. Which puts their world ranking down to 166th. Top of the rankings are Ivory Coast (this is before the 2014 WC so it all could change), with Croatia 2nd and England 3rd. Brazil amazingly are down to 31st place!

Next update will come at the end of the 2014/15 season :)

Brazil won't be playing any competitive matches due to hosting the 2014 World Cup so their ranking will suffer as a result.

True however now post WC they have dropped further, to 42nd in the world, after some awful awful results.

Meanwhile, as a sneaky mid-season preview i can reveal we are on the way to getting promoted to the first division :)

Senglea Athletic - 2014/2015 Season

Having taken them to 4th last season the aim this season was to get them promoted, which we eventually managed despite it coming close nearer the end of the season!

BOV Second Division: 1st - Champions

Quick-KENO Second & Third Division Knock- Out: Winners

(This is basically a cup for second and third divison teams)

The excellent season led to this:

newcontractsenglea.png

Which i accepted. The offer came from a new chairman who bought the club midway through the season, he claims to have big plans for the club but is unwilling to put much money in so doesn't really seem much different to the previous owner.

Next season I will be in the First Division and I hope i can get into the premier league as quickly as possible.

Strangely this year in the premier division the hlders from the year before were relegated and the newly promoted team won the league, very odd.

In international news Malta are still struggling in their fixtures and currently sit in 156th place in the world.

Senglea Athletic - 2015/2016 Season

1st Season in the First Division and my aim is to get this club into the Prem and winning trophies, as then i should be able to get youth for the national team, and it would feel a lot better doing it this way than taking over a Prem team. But it was a big ask for us to go up again, however.... WE DID IT!

BOV First Division: 1st - Champions

Maltco Lotteries First Division Knock- Out: Winners

(This is basically a cup for first divison teams)

The excellent season led to this:

newdeal.png

Another excellent season and a second successive promotion, I'm really proud of the direction this club is heading.

However, lack of funds means we can't progress in terms of stadium, facilities or affiliations. We have a wage budget which is twice how much we spend so i can potentially get some good players in before our first Premier division games, however I really feel we need a new investor to help this club develop even further :)

In other news, the Maltese national team have been doing terribly, they are down to 201st in the world rankings. San Marino on the other hand went up to a record high of 150th, before recently dropping back down to 204th.

My next update hopefully I should bring you a lot quicker than this, as my exams and coursework are all done now :)

Little Spoiler for the next update; First season in the Premier Division, I spent a massive £21k in the summer on Premier Division players, and midway through the season I'm doing A LOT better than expected :)

Link to post

Currently 1st place in the prem gets in the very first qualifying round of CL, and the next two get into the first qualifying of the EL. With how we're currently going it may happen :)

I also hope soon that we'll progress to being a professional side, and that someone might buy the club as the current owners, whilst they do give me so much of the money we make as transfer/wage budget they are unwilling to improve facilities/scouting/stadium, or even search for a parent/feeder club.

Senglea Athletic - 2016/2017 Season

After two straight promotions I wanted to just make sure I secure my place in the Premier League this season. However, 2 months in I was sitting pretty at the top! Some poor results in the middle of the season brought me down to 6th and it was only after the league split into two that I made a late surge up to 3rd, securing myself a spot in the Europa League First Qualifying round for next season!

BOV Premier Division: 3rd

FA Trophy Semi-Finalists

-Got knocked out on penalties by a Division 1 team, after they got a very dubious looking penalty in normal time. But oh well.

The excellent season once again led to this:

2yearcontract.png

- Finally a two-year offer from the board, having previously given me only one-year extensions.

Europe: So having finished 3rd I qualify for the first qualifying round of the Europa League, and my opponents are Levadia from Estonia, who were seeded for the draw, so I'm not too optimistic.

In other news, the Maltese national team jumped all the way up to 125th, after a win over Azerbaijan, before dropping back again after losing all their other games, including a 6-0 loss to England, so are now 154th.

I started a game in Malta with Hibernians. Walked the league but didn't like the 4 foreign players only quota, so quit. Will be a very hard game for you to stick with long term due to the lack of good Maltese players available, making it hard to succeed in Europe and get some sort of income which will allow you to improve your youth facilities.

Thanks for the support guys, already out of Europe at the first hurdle this year, however I have once again spent in the transfer window (it seems only us and Valetta are willing to spend money), so hopefully should qualify again next year, even more hopefully win the league ;)

Meanwhile, Malta have been appauling, just want to show you their results from this year. The manager got sacked and I was close to applying but I want to focus on getting Senglea A to being dominant in the league before I focus back on national team.

maltafixtures.png

They are awful at conceding goals, which is actually not good for me as my first team goalkeeper has just broken into the national team, and he was between the sticks when England beat them 7-0.

Senglea Athletic - 2017/2018 Season

We dominated in the early stages of the league, but it died down near the end. We won with 5 games to go so it was comfortable really, next season i'd like to dominate even further. We have got NSI in the Faroe Islands in the Champions League Champions qualifying phase too. We also won the FA Trophy.

BOV Premier Division: 1st - Champions

FA Trophy Winners

Europe: Europa League 1st Qualifying Round

Next season we have qualified for the Champions League, where we will play NSI from the Faroe Islands, they were only seeded slightly better than us (their 1.05 to our 0.45) so hopefully we can progress.

Senglea Athletic - 2018/2019 Season

We won it again, this time we got 4 more points and half the number of losses. Hopefully soon we shall have such league domination that we will not be losing games. In Europe we did well to get past NSI from Faroe Islands, But Wackner Innsbruck were too strong for us in the end. We have had Youth and Training Facilities upgraded and were planned to have an Academy built but lack of funds stopped that, i'm hoping the CL will generate enough money next season to make that likely.

We also had a takeover, and the new chairman seemed to be looking to invest more than the previous but nothing really yet of note.

Our European coefficient has improved a lot, taking us to 430th, and we are the 9th wealthiest club in Malta with £325k.

In other news, i was awarded Manager of the month and 8/10 of the yearly awards for the Premier Division were won by my players. We also just got PAOK from Greece as our parent club, which should get some loan signings and money in.

BOV Premier Division: 1st - Champions

FA Trophy Winners

BOV Super Cup Winners

Europe: Champions League Champions Qualifying 2nd Round

When we went down 2-1 to NSI in the first leg i thought that was us out of Europe for another season but miraculously we won 3-0 in the second leg to win the tie, we then overcame a three goal deficit to draw incredibly with Innsbruck but their strength showed in the second leg.

Amazingly I lost to Tre Fiori, won 2-1 at home but lost 3-1 away. Shocked. So I did what every clever manager should do to get over a loss, buy signing their two strikers on free transfers, one italian and a paraguayan :) It's not like they'll be needing them they got knocked out the next round and I haven't loaded their league. I'm morally ok with it :)

Oh well! You should have loaded the brazilian leagues, brazilians will sign for anybody and they are amazing. With the help of my brazilians, I managed to get HB of the Faroe Islands to the Champions League group stage before getting thrashed in all my games in the group stage, all in my first season. But anyway, TonyHawker managed to turn his Sammarinese club into superpowers without brazilians so there is no need to worry! ;)

Senglea Athletic - 2019/2020 Season

We won it again and improved again, 2 more points than last year and a goal difference four higher than last time. Disappointing thing was we were unbeaten until the week before the league split into two, when we lost to Hibernians, and we then lost on the second to last game of the season. Once again we won the cup and Super cup, but didn't do so well in the Champions League. We got knocked out in the Champions League Champions 1 Qualifying round, to Tre Fiori of San Marino, which was awful as we were expected to beat them convincingly. But next year, due to improved coefficients, we go straight in to the 2nd Qualifying round of the CL :)

We have begun work on a youth academy once again which means we should be able to get players through our club.

In other news I won manager of the year and my players won most of the leagues awards (from now i shall do screenshots of my key players).

BOV Premier Division: 1st - Champions

FA Trophy Winners

BOV Super Cup Winners

Europe: Champions League Champions Qualifying 1st Round

Key Players:

1. Jonathan Vella (CB) - Won best defender. Scored an incredible amount of goals for us from defence this year!

2. Matthew Galea (GK) - Won best Goalkeeper. Was solid once again.

3. Lawrence Jimoh (ST) - Won best foreigner and best attacker. Scored 1 more than last year in his second season in Malta.

4. Adrian Psaila (MR / C) - Won best local player and best midfielder.

5. Robert Grech (ML / C) - Ever present in our midfield but didn't shine as much as last year.

Aims For Next Season:

  • Progress further in the Champions League
  • Try to go unbeaten in the Premier League
  • Develop youth players

My unbeaten season aim has fallen through in the fourth game of the season, thanks to a goal which should have been ruled out for handball apparently, so I said so in the post-match interview and surprisingly the FA didn't give me a touchline ban, probably because it says after that replays showed it should have been disallowed. Anyway, some good signings and good results mean I am optimistic for another successful season. Already out of the CL though as we faced Litex from Bulgaria who had an Argentine international uptop. Won the super cup already.

Things are looking good on the youth side too, we have just completed our youth academy and I have signed 3 16 year olds who look to be good, they are from Spain, Luxembourg and Moldova and are all going to be good prospects. I realised getting them this young means they should be able to complete the five years of living in Malta which is required for gaining the nationality, by which time they will be 21 and probably just breaking into the first team. This would be very beneficial as the 4 foreigners in the starting 11 rule is very annoying. I have learnt from this rule though, as before I was just sticking my foreigners on the bench but that meant I couldn't substitute any Maltese players!

Good to see somebody enjoying themselves with my Maltese editor data file :) Best of luck with your career

P.S. Could you post the best three Maltese regens around? I just want to see what kind of regens come up the ranks

Hey, yeah its brilliant, thanks a lot for making it :)

Well the current best Maltese players (i.e the ones under the 'top players' heading on the overview page for Malta) are actually one remaining original player, Abubakar Bello-Osagie, followed by the four Maltese players I posted screenshots for in post 31 :) So i'd say the top three would be Jonathon Vella, Robert Grech and Adrian Psaila. Although I have another striker called David Borg who is 20 and valued £120k and doing well this season. Having just created a youth academy I hope my regens improve in standard in the future.

More info in case anyone wanted to know; the Maltese Premier Division now sits between the Montenegran first division and the Johnston Paint Trophy in the competition rankings.

Haven't been keeping up with the season updates but I'm still playing this, and after 5 consecutive league titles I have finally got into the CL group stages! 2022/23 season and I beat Ekranas, Kobenhavn and Valur in the qualification stages. I got a massive £6M for getting into the group stages which is huge seeing as my balance was a mere £1.7M before hand.

Unfortunately I drew the group of death, AC Milan, Man Utd and Valencia. Just lost 6-1 to AC Milan away haha, not going to get a lot in the group stages I feel.

Unlucky about who you drew in the group stages but at least it's progress... :)
