I understand that there is commentary during the match at the bottom of the screen, but why isn't there any audio commentary? I've always wondered that.

I think they may have tested this, but several computers exploded in the process![]()
Unnecessary and would probably slow the match speed down.
I doubt it wouldn't really work for a number of reasons
- Would only be able to be used when watching the match at a slower than normal speed
- A lot of commentary lines would have to be recorded in multiple different languages
- What about team names?
- What about player names?
- We had it in CM2 and it was rubbish
Because you'd turn it off after two games
Because FIFA doesnt develop new players and has a tiny database compared to FM
Ok thank you for your answers. Makes sense, I forgot about the database size and amount of players/teams, etc.
Isn't the commentary used in FIFA Manager just the commentary from FIFA 10/11 whatever? It's not like SI have another game with a commentary track ready made that they can use.
When I started FM in 2009 I wondered the same thing myself, but I've come to the realization that it wouldn't really be necessary. FM has trained me to want progression to be lightning fast.
Would prefer better match sounds and atmosphere tbh.
Sounds dead most of the time, then again maybe that's representative of modern football.
I just like playing without sound at all. Allows me to be 'sucked' in to the world of FM![]()
Personally I'd love it and would have it on all the time. Technology has moved on in quantum leaps since CM2, and anyway in those days I played SWOS and it had wonderful commentary. Was it Jonathon Pearce? I'll never forget the "He-hey, the Iceman cometh" when the penalty taker stepped up.
But don't forget, in SWOS you only ever got one comment on 'Oh thats a good pass" for the whole of the game =)
I prefer commentating on the game myself. That way i can build up my players the way Sky do with Rooney, Bale, Terry etc ;-)
It would be pointless. Time would be best spent improving current in game features and introducing new ones that actually improve game play.
Actually making it work for Regens is not that difficult. Think about it.. Every regen in the game carries random first and last name based on the nationaility. All names are programmed in the database so regens are only reusing current names in random fashion. In order to have this work for commentary one would need to separate first and last name and record them separately. Now when commentator is talking he would just bring up the recorded file for first name and then last name thereby combining it to full regen name. Recording all these names is however a big task but not impossible, it would just consume a lot of data. Personally I wouldn't mind commentators along with key highlights but it would have to work for little bit more than normal speed.
- If you have commentary - force the speed of the highlight to normal if the commentary is on
- Would probably take less time and be more welcome than several different translations of the press conference questions
- Individual club badges and kits have been created, surely a one worded soundbite of each team name isn't a massive overhead in comparison
- Again it's just saying one word if you're picking surnames, recording them wouldn't take as long as chopping up the sound file, but maybe just pick the most popular ones and leave the community to fill in the blanks. Either that or just don't include player names and make the commentary revolve around "he" and "they" and generic other comments
- Do it better then
I think it's a great suggestion that should probably be re-visited by the powers that be, with the inclusion of matchday style TV views, with nicely built up stadiums and ever improving levels of animation, adding matchday sounds is just as important to some, and commentary forms part of that.
Would hope the idea isn't completely dismissed.
"There is no audio commentary in Football Manager because the creators worried lonely users would develop an emotional attachment to the voice."
From http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/Football_manager
I would rather have authentic voice commentary then text scrolling on the screen saying things like "Yeeeeeeeeeeeahhhhawwwwwww!" Besides the text-scrolling commentary goes by so fast you have to stare at it to get everything.
Sorry but I hope one day they put real voice commentary in.
I play Pro Evolution Soccer with a friend of mine.
We play about 3 nights a week, for 2 hours a night.
In these 6 hours, we play about 30 matches.
After 2 weeks, I'm just tired of hearing the damn commentary saying the same things over and over and incorrectly and at the wrong pitch ...
In FM, I play up to 60 games in an evening. Now that would be fun for like 1 hour.
And yes, I could (and will) just shut it of, like I did with the 3d match engine. But still, I'd like to see effort, time and money spent on other things, like an AI for the opposition or so.
We're football managers though. Sitting/standing in the dugout/technical area. Why on earth would we have commentary?![]()
I remember there was Peter Brackley on CM2 Italia, the first version of CM I had. Could hardly ever install it to work though. (Or the game for that matter, spent ages when I first got it reading the manual thinking "This game sounds amazing!" before I made the installation work.)
Number. Sorry.
The thought of Andy 'i talk rubbish' Gray been in the game is cringe worthy.
hey sometimes, I heard the audio commentary in the first half injury time...
I wish for the day when we can get enthusiastic South American "Goallllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll lllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll..." commentaries during pre-season friendlies against amateur sides...
There might already have been commentary in for all I know. The sounds has always been so poor in the past, that once the game is installed, I go to options and turn the sound off (amongst other changes).
They say you learn something new every day, I just have. I didn't have a clue that it had been tried in CM2. I will have to see if I can find the disk and give it a whirl, to see how bad it was.
I do my own commentary and I know I can't be the only one.
"And that's just ridiculous, I can't believe my eyes. Dirk Kuyt has just run 70 metres with the ball, beaten two players and scored, I'm going to jump off a bridge now as this cannot be happening in real life so I must be dreaming"...
We need voice commentary.
SI, don't stress the difficulties, make it come ture
I wouldn't use it. FACT.
would only ever accept it or use it if they got Carlo Zampa to do the voice over
first thing i do when i install FM is to turn off all the sounds so i would never find a use for this at all.
Taking into account the amount of games i play in a day and the relasonably low amount of scripted commentary lines already I bet having voice commentarywould very quickly become very annoying.
I feel it's more realistic WITHOUT audio commentary. Do managers have headphones, listening to commentators during matches? Not really. It would be even more realistic if there was a Manager Camera View, along with the others, like Broadcast, or Sideline, etc. It would probably be a lot of work in terms of graphics, but it's worth trying. If it turns out to be a bad idea we can always use the other camera options.
I found a patch that implement voice commentary. The patch is made by a Chinese guy, so the voice commentary is in Chinese
below is the video:

The patch is just about 13M, so not very perfect, but it means it isn't hard to implement

I dont know about anyone else, but i always play FM on my laptop while watching TV and so do the other people i know who play FM. So for me voice commentary would be pointless
ah ok, again i used to turn all the commentary off on football games, i hated hearing the same thing over and over again lol
Andy Gray needs a new job, SI get hiring.
EA has done this with a number of titles- their NHL series had voice commentary, and while it was fun at first, it got repetitive and silly fairly quickly. at some point you just run out of new lines, and its a slog to hear. Just to get a decent variety SI would have to record hours upon hours of tracks, it would inevitably not match the action in place, and no way could they have some commentator read off thousands of first and last names separately just to insert into the the commentary to cover the DB. My current save has a db of 125,000 players . . . What a waste of resources that should go into firming up the game in other areas. As one poster said, it would just get shut off my the majority either right off, or within a week
We should have Alan Partridge commentary!
"That was liquid football!"
"He must have a foot like a traction engine!"
For me the BIG QUESTION is... Why is the text commentaty in FM2011 as good as is was in FM2010, FM2009.... CM93/94??
I know, i know... it has some differences, but no major ones! Your team wins the league... and nothing special happens! common, at least 15 or 20 lines of rubish text saying something like:
"oh my god| they've done it! and i never expected, because this team should only achive the 5ş or 6ş place"
or
"They won! They were favorites, but still, great work from manager XXXXXX"
You now what i mean?
Because, winning the league or the champions league happens one time every season (at most), so why dont SI give some 15 or 20 lines of text at the end of those game?
I'd just settle for better quality sound than we have currently in the game.
I dont think we need commentary . Yes, FIFA manager has it but their engine is from FIFA games . SI made it's own 3d engine , so I think it's very impressive ( and gameplay is much much better than FIFA's). All I want now is better animations and graphics ( especially players). Also a bit longer cut-scenes after games.
Hey dudes, Andy Gray is great!
You know though, if SI were to add voice commentary they don't necessarily have to mention the names of players/clubs....
in PES they mention the numbers instead of the players name? It still bring the experience
One of the things about FM that appeals to me is how it lends itself so well to multi tasking. I don't think I could actually play FM without some kind of TV/music in the background, I'd turn the sound effects off however great they were.
Open \Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2011\data\events\match_sounds.cfg
You will know that mix the voice commentary and sound files(\Sports Interactive\Football Manager 2011\data\sounds\default), you will easliy get voice commentary in the game
You can record voice commentary yourself, or capture them from TV LIVE/RECORD
