It's goodbye to our best ever player
Board: Consolidate position
Media: 20th
Bookies: 40-1
Season tickets: 231 (up 5)
Another one year contract extension for me.
We make a great start, winning our first four games before a defeat at Woking. This form continues and we top the table after a dozen played.
By halfway and the league is tight with seven teams spread over a seven point difference.
My 500th game in charge at the club is a 3-0 home win over York. This leaves us in 2nd place after 30 games, behind Burton.
Into the new year and we stutter a little as Burton pull clear and really hit their stride.
Despite a very strong finish, Burton seal the title with a comfortable four games to spare, the same day we secure a place in the playoffs which started with an amazing 5-5 draw at Woking...

It's a shame Brooks never made it on to the All Time Best Eleven. I expect he out-scored both the strikers on there, but didn't play enough games.
Knocking on the Football League door again, it's difficult when there's only one automatic promotion place though. Better luck next season![]()
Bad luck in the playoffs Nobby.
How do you think you will do without Brooks next season. Surely its going to be almost impossible to replace him?

Another one year contract extension for me. Elsewhere, Histon turn professional.
Before the season starts, a (startling?) realisation. The two oldest players in my entire squad are just 25 while the average age of the first team is just 20.
Early on we struggle for goals without Brooks but we do grind out results.
Come halfway and the goals are going in and we're up to second place, chasing Histon. A good cup run sees us knock out Chesterfield at B2Net Stadium. They finished mid table in League One.
With a quarter of the season left things are tight. Four points seperate the top four with us in fourth place.
We then stuttered into the playoffs by losing three out of the last four, prior to which we are placed under a transfer embargo pending a takeover.
In the playoffs, we have Woking again and it's another classic. Winning 3-0 at home in the first leg, we are 3-0 down at half time in the second leg before rallying back to lose 4-3 and go through 6-4 on aggregate, where we will travel to York and a crowd of 4060.

Delighted with promotion. While I knew Talbot was good as he played for some of last season, I didn't expect him to replace Brooks as well as he did.
I've fixed the video.
And yeah... Forest and Mansfield... though the Forest result was hardly a surprise.

Some other tidbits...
My long serving Assistant Manager retired at the end of the season, he has been with me since the start.
The number of seats in the stadium is being increased to meet Football League requirements.
Our youth recruitment network is being improved.
![]()
HEY, NO FAIR! I can't even ASK for a recruiting network upgrade. :grr:
Congrats on the promotion, Nobby!
And you lucky person on the youth recruitment thing!
Shame Brooks didn't play more often at United this season. I would expect him to be farmed out on loan if he wasn't getting regular appearances, otherwise is development is really going to stall.
Top work on the promotion, seems the board have a bit of ambition too![]()
Good work Nobby
What tactics do you employ out of interest?
Splendid season there Nobby. Congrats on the promotion and welcome into the Football League proper
Shame Brooks left, but he looks to be way too good for your level anyway. Would be nice to see him make the grade in United though, or elsewhere in the Premier League.
How much capacity have you got now after the upgrade of the stadium?
Thanks Pangaea.
Brooks has agreed to go on loan to Everton this coming season where I presume he will be playing more often.
Capacity is staying at 4000 but the number of seats is increasing to 2051.
Youth recruitment network improvements have been completed and are now rated basic.
The new chairman is a bit of a mixed bag in the early going. Firstly he cancelled the link with Manchester United which had seen us playing an annual pre season friendly. Then he's allowed more money for wages and more staff (though they will tie in with being in League Two) before he did this.
![]()
That's always a costly affair, and not just in terms of wages.
4,000 capacity isn't much, but if my experience is anything to go by it'll barely be half-full even in League 2.
Our first match is the Football League is watched by 2778, probably made up of around a thousand Newcastle Town fans, around a thousand from London and around a thousand Stoke City fans curious as to what their little neighbours are up to.
I've not been playing much due to working a lot, golfing and a holiday in Nice, but I have now managed to reach January in my current season.

I get another further year and this time a pay rise of £125 per week to £775.
In our first Football League game, 2778 come to Lyme Valley to see us beat Leyton Orient 3-2 thanks to a Talbot hat-trick. A dream start.
This continues but we slip to mid table in October.
However, form is strong and consistant only for a final day draw at home to Hartlepool sees them relegated and us miss out on the playoffs.

One other thing of note before I go... the youth and training facilities upgrade was cancelled due to lack of funds and a planned stadium expansion was reduced to just 50 extra seats costing £90,000![]()
Looks like wor Brooksy should be doing the business for Man Utd soon! How did he get into the England squad without playing much club football?
Good solid seasonNext year, playoffs?

What do you do when you end up with the exact same tie at the same round of the League Cup as the previous season when you got knocked out?
You get revenge.

It's a long, tough season

I get another further year and this time a pay rise of £50 per week to £825.
A poor start sees us down the bottom end of the table.
A brief improvement after a while saw us climb to mid table at Christmas.
A nosedive saw us bomb back down the table and it was a very gritty second half to the season.
A short good run did ease the worries but it was a disappointing season after our Football League debut last year was so good. Typically we found a bit of form when it didn't matter over the final month or so.

Brooks Watch
Brooks was back at Manchester United and played well, making a significant contribution to their Premier League & Champions League double.
On the England front, he played well in the friendlies - England are hosting Euro 2024 so have no competitive matches at the moment.

Approaching the end of the season and just received my first job offer. Berwick Rangers, new consortium at the helm and relegated from the First Division approach me.
No thanks. If I leave Newcastle Town it's because I've been forced out and to play FM2012 which I don't have.

It's where we throw away a season of great effort

Another contract extension for me. This time I get an extra two years (so three to run) and a £100 pay rise to £925 per week.
Also, the training facilities improve from basic to fairly basic, the youth facilities from minimal to basic and the stadium is converted to all seated and increased slightly to 4050 capacity.
Our start is a lot better this season than last as we sit just below the playoffs.
Talbot then gets injured... and we go on a run that puts us into the playoffs. Defensive stalwart McHugh then tears his calf (missed 4-5 months) yet we still maintain our form,
A slight blip gets compensated by a 7-3-0 run and we enter the final game one point clear of Rotherham and in third play.
We then lose at home to Oxford United and away at Wrexham to throw away automatic promotion.
Into the playoffs and we lose 3-1 at home to Tranmere. The comeback of all comebacks is on as we go 3-0 at Prenton Park only to ship a goal and lose on penalties.
All that work to throw it away.

He made sporadic appearances in the league but helped a little in United winning the title. He's made a few more international appearances too and will probably make the Euro 2024 squad which England are hosting.

News not long after the season started came that the board have decided to build a new stadium. While I'm obviously delighted about this, I do wonder why they bothered converting Lyme Valley to all seated last close season. Also, I know for a fact that there is lots of room around the stadium to expand. Oh well, it will be nice and new and won't have an outdoor velodrome surrounding the pitch.
Capacity is expected to be 6867.
Congrats on the new stadium, shame about the playoff defeat.
Thanks Snake. I felt like throwing something through the monitor when we lost promotion twice.

had a good read of this thread - I had avoided reading FM11 threads since 12, but thought i'd give it a go! Very impressive stuff. David Brooks - what a legend! That pace is just INSANE!!!
Thanks Jdrawmer. Glad you enjoy it.
I was very lucky to find Brooks. He had come into the game unattached and my scout found him. After two years, I couldn't keep him, it wouldn't have been fair on him.
So close! Very unlucky! Top scorers in the league too, I notice.
At least the new stadium is a slight sweetener I suppose![]()
Well... in a way yes. The downside is it's hammered my transfer budget (to nothing) and my wage budget (I can't sign anyone under 21 following the National Minimum Wage in the UK). My first team squad is six players lighter for the next season, though I have kept all my main players bar one (Bigger Tshibasu) who was sold for £160,000.

The lack of goals in the World Cup, especially in the latter stages is disappointing.
The +9 increase in Brookes' strength attribute is probably the biggest I have ever seen. Great indication as to how proper training and facilities can impact a player, and how keeping prospects through the lower leagues can stall development.
So unlucky with the playoff defeat. I'm betting on you bouncing back this season though!
