I plan on taking my time in the Championship. Around 2019 is when we change our sponsorship deal. We'll also need a new stadium too. So will take a while.

Need to just survive the first season too!

    Thanks for the comment.

Zoltan Gera has announced his retirement so I've offered him a position as part of my backroom staff.

Always seems to be the case unless I am managing them

Didn't really expect you to start injecting money anytime soon, money its pretty tight in the lower leagues then when you get to the Premiership and get £30M TV revenue = heaven

Believe me when you get to the Premiership and get your 1st transfer budget you will feel like a kid in a candy shop

You can inject money into feeder clubs? Is this something I have completely missed all year?!?!

Crouchy's Mighty Saints Save - St. Albans City in League One (Season Eight at Clarence Park - 2016/17)

    End of Season 2016/17 Screenshots:

League Table - see above post for the full league table. Our second place finish was a record high for the club:

League Positions Graph - as you can see, we had a really strong second half of the season to claim the runners-up spot and automatic promotion!

FA Cup - Third round but disappointed we couldn't go further.

League Cup - Well beaten in the second round.

Johnstone's Paint Trophy - Disaster as we are beaten by our bogey side, Southend United.

Transfers - I was so busy in the market that it is best to do this via code tables.

First of all, the outgoing players.

I've removed the loans in order to reduce the size!

We managed to raise £600k through sales, which was really excellent and pretty essential considering our financial situation. Some of these sales were former regulars like William Le Pogam, Alan McCormack and Siem Lammers. Others were promising youngsters that I decided to cash in on now rather than wait to see what would happen with them in the future.

All new signings were free transfers, so we didn't spend a penny on improving the first team. Out of the loan players, Horacio Palomino was marvellous again and Ryan O'Connor did very well. The others were less impressive. I took a risk with some older players such as Iain Hume and Zoltan Gera. Both did a job for me this season and I think Hume was particularly important. Andres Abdesalam was probably one of the best signings becoming our playmaker in the midfield. Dominic Cervi came in to become our number 1 and was a great signing too.

    Key players:

Borja Rodriguez Sanchez - A quality defender. He spent some of the season unsettled, which is the main reason that his average rating isn't much higher. He was our rock at the back and part of a defence which conceded the least goals in the league. A marvellous player. With him in the side, we could feel confident of keeping a clean sheet.

Andres Abdesalam - Another Spanish player. Abdesalam came in during the second half of the season and proved himself to be extremely talented at this level.

Iain Hume - The veteran midfielder did the business for us, especially when I found his niche in the team was behind the striker. He played the inside forward role and scored some key goals for us as we found our form to clinch 2nd place.

Haracio Palomino - The loanee was the star in attack, scoring 23 goals and setting up another 8. He struggled for goals early on but eventually came good. In the end, his goals to games ratio was actually better than last season. I would love to sign him up. He has both me and St. Albans City in his favourites list, so you never know.

Team of the Season - Pretty close. If you take out Carvalho and put Hume there, then bring O'Connor in wide right, it would definitely be our best side.

Overall Best XI - It's getting a bit more strange each season really.

Youth academy products season reports (the youngsters that my assistant recommended):

Luke Hoyte (YP1) - Luke is first-choice for left-back. He won the club player of the year this season. Great stuff! I wonder if he will be able to step up to yet another level.

Ryan Jones (YP2) - Ryan moved on as he wasn't going to make the grade.

YP3 - I'm afraid I didn't even bother recording who YP3 was. The whole in-take was a complete dud. Not one decent player.

Stephen Greenwood (YP4) - Has been on loan at various clubs. Very slow progress. I have my doubts about him.

Alex Cooke (YP5) - My coaches still rate his potential. He is actually looking like he could be half decent!

John Armstrong (YP6) - Been on loan a lot. Slow progress. Could do very well at a lower level.

Graham Hill (YP7) - I doubt this lad has the ability to make it.

Next Season: It's going to be really tough. I already feel like we're out of our depth. The squad will need to be rebuilt over a couple of seasons. Next season will be all about survival and then, hopefully, we can build from there.

    COYS!

Yeah I meant by buying one of their players for a ridiculous amount.

Thats a lot of transfers do you have a whole new squad now

You've never finished below the playoff places in your career

In reality, it's about half a new starting XI for the League One promotion push! I brought in a lot of young players who I hope will improve in the future. It's a half decent strategy because one or two will eventually make the first team, while the others will improve to an extent and I can at least get a fee for them.

You've never finished below the playoff places in your career
    I didn't notice that! But it's true.

This season will certainly be the first time that pattern is broken though. At the moment, I've got lots of work on my hands just to build a team to survive.

I think the Championship is one of the hardest jumps to make. I'm expecting a real battle this season.

One of my transfer targets is a 34-year-old Jermain Defoe! Got a feeling that I won't get him though. Some Prem clubs still sniffing around him.

Jermain Defoe is now a Saint!

In other news, this season saw not one but two fairly decent looking players in my youth intake. For the first time since Luke Hoyte came through in the first season, it looks as though I might have a youth player in danger of one day making the first team! Hooray!

Full pre-season transfer details etc. coming up at some point soon.

Right, I think I'll go back to monthly updates now that I'm in the Championship.

I have been playing this game since CM97/98. Played every version. And I have never had a young player make my first team So congratulations!

Out of interest who are the biggest clubs in the Championships that you will have to face?

The top six is predicted as follows - Wolves, West Ham United, QPR, Middlesbrough, Burnley, Hull City.

So there hasn't been too much change at this level really.

    PRE-SEASON 2017/18 TRANSFERS:

    Transfers

We tempted Horacio Palomino back to the club on loan from Arsenal for another full season. The other significant loan was attacking midfielder Aleksandar Dimitrov from Chelsea.

In terms of signings, we made improvements in pretty much every area. Once again, all signings were free transfers. Some of the bigger names included former Argentinian international Jonas Gutierrez, former Nigerian international Joseph Yobo, and of course, former England international Jermain Defoe! They are going to add experience to the squad and that could really be key this season.

Jermain has definitely still got it. I intend to use him as an impact player coming off the bench most of the time.

Outgoing transfers raised £165k. Probably the biggest one was the departure of captain Steven Hetherington who had served us well for four seasons making 146 league appearances and scoring 21 goals. He was the key player in the sides that won the Blue Square Premier and League Two titles. I thought it was time to let him go as I wasn't sure that he would make the grade at Championship level. This was a really nice touch:

I had a mini-clearout of some of the players that had served us well at lower levels but would struggle to make the jump up to the Championship. The likes of Ali Battesti, David Langley, Gilles Rouxel and Yassin Moutaouakill were thanked and sent on there way to make a fresh start elsewhere.

I decided to stick with the highly successful 4-4-1-1 formation from last season .This is going to be the first XI:

In goal, new signing Chris Smith comes in. At the back, Joseph Yobo has joined to partner Rodriguez Sanchez.

In the midfield, new signing Alaixys Romao will come in to be the ball winner alongside Abdesalem, and Jonas will come in to play in one of the wide positions.

Finally, up front Dimitrov will play off Palomino who is once again back at the club.

So not too many changes but enough to add a bit of quality to the line-up. Hopefully the players will blend well together and I feel I've done some good work over the summer. We should have a strong team to battle against relegation from the Championship this season.

Kilgallon is a complete beast at the back for my Sunderland team in 2012-13 season, I can see him being pretty good for you. What is Yobo like his physical attributes are second to hardly anyone at the start of the game but obviously that was a long time ago. I am going to predict a 11th place finish a good solid first season in the Championship then push on next year. Good luck dude.

Thanks for the confidence in me Acidburn.

Kilgallon is 33 now but still really solid. I'd probably be starting with him but at the moment I'm preferring to go with the more experienced Yobo.

Yobo's physical attributes have declined quite a bit. The strength and pace particularly. He is still really great in the air.

I think mid-table could be achievable. It's going to be a long hard season. The important thing will be getting off to a solid start.

Might be a bit optimistic there hrbfcrule. It's one of those seasons though in which I have absolutely no idea where we will finish. I think we will be safe but I don't know how well this team can do.

    UPDATE FOR AUGUST 2017:

    Manager Comments for August 2017:

We had a dream start to life in the Championship by beating Hull 3-1 at Clarence Park. I decided to start with a high tempo, attacking tactic against Hull and it paid dividends. Hull saw more of the ball and made a fair number of chances but we got the win thanks to the intensity of our play. A great result.

We were knocked straight back to earth by defeat away to Rotherham. However, we bounced back with a win against Portsmouth at home in similar style to our opening game against Hull. We ended the month with an encouraging draw in the league away to Norwich.

During this month, we also progressed to the second round of the League Cup, only to be knocked out by Premier League Blackburn Rovers who showed the gulf in class between our Championship side and the Premier League.

All in all, it has been a very encouraging month.

    UPDATE FOR SEPTEMBER 2017:

    Manager Comments for September 2017:

The home form has, once again, been quite strong, although we slipped up against Leeds United in the middle of the month. Otherwise strong performances got us wins against Derby County, Charlton Athletic and Coventry City. Away from home, life is significantly tougher. A good point against Huddersfield was a bonus but we couldn't get anything against Sheffield Wednesday.

From what I have seen so far, we should be able to achieve a safe mid-table position. Our home form is going to be important and I'm hoping we can keep it up.

    UPDATE FOR OCTOBER 2017:

    Manager Comments for October 2017:

A great start to the month with two away wins against tough opposition in Wolves and Burnley. However, the Colchester home match was a disappointment and we easily could have lost that game to be honest. We were poor.

We ended the month with a credible draw away to Scunthorpe. A decent result. Overall, I'm pleased with how the month has gone.

It's all quite unpredictable in this league. On our day, I feel we can compete with some of the best sides in the league. On an off day, we can really struggle.

    Current League Position:

    UPDATE FOR NOVEMBER 2017:

    Manager Comments for November 2017:

We've starting to find it harder and harder now. Four draws in a row this month. We were, to be honest, very lucky to get them in three games out of the four. Somehow, we came away from the Birmingham game and the West Ham game with a point, as we were thoroughly outplayed in these games.

That final draw against the Hammers makes it six draws in a row in the league. Where is the next win coming from?

    UPDATE FOR DECEMBER 2017:

    Manager Comments for December 2017:

Watford makes it seven draws and then, finally, the breakthrough - a win against Middlesbrough at home. Another solid win away to Leicester City really picks us up and sends us in the right direction.

Due to injuries, I'm forced to start changing formations and switching things around towards the end of the month. We move away from the 4-4-1-1 to 4-1-3-2 and 4-5-1/4-3-3 at times. Defoe comes in and scores a few goals for us. We end the month with a couple of disappointing defeats and a home draw against Rotherham. During this period, we are missing Abdesalem and Jonas - two of our very best players - and so it is no surprise that our form has slipped. Disappointing, nonetheless.

    UPDATE FOR JANUARY 2018:

    Manager Comments for January 2018:

January was a tough old month. It brought with it injuries, suspensions and a trip to the African Cup of Nations for our captain Joseph Yobo (still in the Nigeria squad at the age of 37).

On the back of a four game winless streak at the end of December, we went another two games without a win. A home loss in the FA Cup 3rd round against Swindon was a real low point. We used to be a decent cup side and I'm not sure when it started going wrong really.

During this winless run, we were missing the likes of Abdesalem, Yobo, Dimitrov and Jonas - basically our best players. I was forced into using a 4-5-1/4-3-3 formation but it didn't really work for us. A switch to 4-2-3-1 seemed to suit us better and we finally picked up some points against Norwich. After the game, I received this message in my inbox:

We continued to struggle at the end of the month losing to Derby away and then Huddersfield at home. It just goes to show that our squad depth isn't strong enough and that when we are missing our best players (especially playmaker Abdesalem) we tend to really struggle.

During the transfer window, I brought in a young Spanish forward called Marc Vega, who has extraordinary pace and who looks like the perfect 'super sub' impact player. And I also signed up Gylfi Sigurdsson, who now has plenty of experience under his belt and who should be a great signing for us. Both were free transfers.

Hopefully this will add some depth to the squad but we are still woefully short of quality at the back.

    UPDATE FOR FEBRUARY 2018:

    Manager Comments for February 2018:

Many of the players who were absent last month were back in February and it shows by the results we got. This was a really excellent month. A great month in which we picked up maximum points at home and managed 5 from a possible 9 points on the road. Marvellous stuff.

The main reason for this is the amazing form of our forward playing AMC Dimitrov. He scored 7 goals in 5 games, a sensational return. He just couldn't stop scoring.

The games against Wolves at home and Charlton away were real roller-coaster rides this month. We had to fight back to get the points against Wolves, which I was very proud of. On the other hand, away to Charlton, we nearly threw away a 3-0 lead but ended up clinching it 4-2.

All in all, a brilliant month. I just need to keep Dimitrov going like this and we could have a very successful end to the season.

Definitely the biggest challenge so far. I feel like I've had to work quite hard for every single point this season.

I think we've got absolutely no chance of going up but I'd love to be involved in the play-offs. Why not?

Who've you got left on your schedule? I find that March gets really crucial in terms of who you have to play; if it's five cream puffs, you can zoom up the table and morale gets excellent for a strong finish; if it's five top-half teams, it gets really, really tough to avoid dooming yourself to the middle of the table...

    Thanks for the comment DSYoungEsq.

I'll be posting up March in a minute. You'll see that we had a tough ending to the month, having to play two of the promotion favourites in Nottingham Forest and West Ham. Two very difficult matches.

Apart from one huge clash in April, we actually have a half decent looking month to finish on.

    UPDATE FOR MARCH 2018:

    Manager Comments for March 2018:

We started the month strongly with two really excellent home wins against Burnley and Scunthorpe. An away draw at QPR followed. We could be winning some of these away games if we just had a little more quality. Defensively, we can be woeful at times, and that is going to be a priority for improvement in the summer.

A home game against Nottm Forest gave us a real challenge and we managed to clinch a draw in a game in which we were very much the inferior side. We went away to top of the table West Ham to end the month, and we lost, as expected. Just not enough quality to compete with them. It shows how far we still have to go.

We kick off April with a massive clash against Hertfordshire rivals Watford who are currently a couple of places above us in a play-off position. This game could go a long way to deciding who gets to call themselves 'the pride of Hertfordshire' at the end of the season, and also who gets to contest the play-offs come May. I really fancy us to get something at Clarence Park. Fingers crossed!

I don't care about the play-offs really but I badly want to finish in the top 6 and get a chance to contest them! It would do wonders to my club's reputation, no doubt, and give us some valuable experience.

Thought I would share with you our first game of April. The Hertfordshire derby against Watford! Watford currently three points ahead of us and sitting in the play-off zone.

Football League Championship: St. Albans City 1 - 0 Watford

    Formations & Starting Line-ups

Overview, Match Stats & Player Ratings

A marvellous win! It gives us a real chance of a top 6 finish.

We now sit in 6th place, level on points with Watford who are below us in 7th. We are ahead of Watford due to goal difference but we have a game in hand on all of the teams around us.

I just had a player who was reported as complacent during the second-half of a match on the motivation widget. After full-time, I checked assistant manager feedback, and apparently he had actually 'lost confidence'.

Talk about mixed messages. Was he complacent or lacking in confidence? Surely you can't be both. Why can't my assistant make his mind up?

Perhaps the motivation widget and the team talk feedback aren't even remotely connected.

Team talks continue to be one of the few things that annoy me about FM10. That and the lack of the old arrows system!

How terrible would it be if Watford finally stopped finishing mid-table and pipped you to the play-offs?!

UPDATE FOR APRIL & MAY 2018:

Manager Comments for April & May 2018:

Well, a great start to April with the win over Watford that you have already seen, and also a fine win over Birmingham City. From then on, it all went downhill. Four games without a win saw us struggling to keep up with those in the play-off positions.

We went into our last match with Millwall knowing that we could still get into the play-offs. We needed Middlesbrough to lose at home to Leicester however.

We did our job by beating Millwall but Middlesbrough won their game consigning us to a 7th place finish. We finished outside of the play-offs by 2 points.

Crouchy's Mighty Saints Save - St. Albans City in the Championship (Season Nine at Clarence Park - 2017/18)

    End of Season 2017/18 Screenshots:

League Table - see above post for the full league table. Our 7th place finish was a record high for the club:

League Positions Graph - as you can see, it was steady progress throughout the season.

FA Cup - Third round and very disappointed we couldn't go further.

League Cup - Same old story. We were well beaten in the second round.

Transfers - I'll do this in code so that I can delete some of the outgoing youth players and loans, and just record the significant transfers.

First of all, the outgoing players.

    | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------|
We managed to raise £225k through sales, which is pretty essential considering our poor financial situation. We said goodbye to a number of old favourites who wouldn't make the grade at Championship level, including Steven Hetherington, Yassin Moutaouakil, Yohann Agosta and Gilles Rouxel. At the end of the season, I had another little clear out in order to rebuild for next season.

All new signings were free transfers, so we didn't spend a penny on improving the first team. I have put the really significant signings in bold. Out of the loan players, Horacio Palomino was marvellous again and Aleksandar Dimitrov formed a formidable partnership with him. I took a risk with some older players such as Jonas, Romao, Yobo and Defoe. All of them did a job for me this season and Jonas was the best signing in the whole division in the end of season summary.

    Key players:

Jonas - The signing of the season. Played for us on either flank and scored 9 goals, setting up a further 8, which was a great return. Was the signing of the season in the Championship.

Andres Abdesalam - Abdesalam has been absolutely brilliant as our advanced playmaker in the midfield. 18 assists and a further 6 goals speaks for itself. He is going to be key to any success we have in the future.

Aleksandar Dimitrov - The youngster, on loan from Chelsea, was our top scorer with a total of 20 goals, all scored from the 'inside forward' position.

Horacio Palomino - The loanee striker scored less goals in the Championship, notching up 13 goals in the end, but was still a star for us. He also recorded 12 assists and he formed a great partnership with Dimitrov. Their goals pushed us into taking 7th spot in the league.

Team of the Season - Pretty close.

Overall Best XI - Absolute rubbish to be honest. This feature is broken!

    Other Club Info:

Club finances: Finances are in a bad shape. We really need a new sponsorship deal as soon as possible. We are currently £250k in debt and that is after we've been paid TV money and surplus parachute money too.

Youth academy products season reports (the youngsters that my assistant recommended):

Luke Hoyte (YP1) - I think Luke has finally met his level. He doesn't quite have the quality and so I'll be looking for a replacement for him in the summer but I'll keep him on as a backup.

Ryan Jones (YP2) - Ryan moved on as he wasn't going to make the grade.

YP3 - I'm afraid I didn't even bother recording who YP3 was. The whole in-take was a complete dud. Not one decent player.

Stephen Greenwood (YP4) - Not good enough in the end so I released him.

Alex Cooke (YP5) - Not good enough so had to release him. Made 21 apps for the first team and scored 1 goal.

John Armstrong (YP6) - Been on loan a great deal. He has improved a little bit. More loan time for him next season.

Graham Hill (YP7) - I doubted that this lad had the ability to make it and so it proved. Released.

Glen Miller (YP8) - Looked promising before I clocked his woeful mental attributes. Will he be able to improve enough? I have major doubts.

David Waite YP8b - Not even the recommended player from last season's batch. All of the basics are there and I think he could end up being decent!

In other news, Jermain Defoe has set his retirement date

    Here is his biography:

Next Season: The defence was poor this season and it was only our attacking play which kept us so high up the table. So sorting out the back four is the priority for the summer, plus general improvement in all areas if possible.

Horacio Palomino was released by Arsenal at the end of the season but Betis beat me to his signature even though he had both me and St. Albans City in his favourite personnel/team.

    PRE-SEASON 2018/19 TRANSFERS:

    Transfers

First of all, I was unable to tempt Horacio Palomino back to the club after Arsenal released him at the end of his contract. He decided to join Betis instead of the mighty Saints, which was a big disappointment. Aleksandar Dimitrov did return on loan from Chelsea.

In terms of signings, I feel we are being held back by our lower reputation. It has been a bit of an anti-climax to be honest.

I actually let quite a few players go over the summer and managed to raise £1m in transfer fees received. This is pretty much essential, as the club is in big trouble financially, so I need to sell players at the end of each season to raise some much needed funds.

Coming in, there aren't really too many headlines. Marc Albrighton and Kevin Doyle were fairly solid signings bringing experience into the side. They basically replaced the departing Wayne Routledge and the retiring Jermain Defoe respectively.

We managed to get in a solid left-back from Blackburn called Joe Hall. I'm quite pleased with that signing but not too happy that we didn't manage to further strengthen at the back. Rodney Hansen came in from Arsenal on loan and he's not too bad but not a great improvement on the options that we already had to be quite honest.

So all in all, it's only a tiny improvement this summer. Will it be enough to push us into a play-off spot?

I've decided to stick with my 4-4-1-1 formation from the last few seasons. This is going to be the most likely first XI:

Chris Smith continues in goal. At the back, Joe Hall and Rodney Hansen come in to add a bit more solidity in defence.

In the midfield, new signing Rodney Strasser will come in to be the ball winner alongside Andres Abdesalem. New signing Marc Albrighton will come in to play wide right.

Finally, up front Dimitrov is back and will play off Marc Vega, who is going to be our replacement for Palomino.

So it's basically five new players coming into the starting XI. On a totally random note, we now have two Rodneys and two Marcs. Does this bode well for the future? Does it make any difference at all? Personally, I think footballers are always better when they have cool names (like Roberto Baggio and so on) and, quite frankly, Marc and Rodney aren't exactly setting my imagination alight. Marc and Rodney don't exactly fill me with confidence. Let's hope I'm wrong!

So not too many changes but enough to improve the quality slightly. The biggest difference is probably the squad depth actually. Hopefully the players will blend well and quickly. I feel happy enough but I guess I was expecting bigger things this summer. Arsene Wenger always says that if you do good business in the summer then you'll be happy come May. I feel we have hopefully improved slightly. It's all about consolidation this year and so hopefully what we have done this summer will stand us in good stead for the season to come.

This is one for Saxonaitor. A quite extraordinary league game from August away to Norwich City.

Norwich City 3 - 5 St. Albans City

    Formations & Line-ups

Overview, Match Stats & Player Ratings

I was about as annoyed as you can get at getting the lead and then throwing it away for the first two goals. Then conceding a third to make it 3-2 had me screaming at the dots in considerable agony and frustration.

And yet, we astonishingly came back to win the game 5-3. Extraordinary!

    UPDATE FOR AUGUST 2018:

    Manager Comments for August 2018:

An incredible start to the season from day one. Three magnificent wins, at home to Scunthorpe and Huddersfield, and away to Norwich. This early form has got us started in the best possible way and we sit at the top of the Championship table at the end of August! Of course, it means little at this stage of the season, but it's nice all the same.

We also made progress in the League Cup. I have, however, been playing my reserve/youth players in this particular competition. We have little chance of winning it and I've decided it is best used as a chance to look at one or two players and to speed up gelling by getting fringe players to have some minutes under their belts early on in the season. So far, so good, nonetheless.

I'm not going to get carried away. We're still a long way from where I want us to be in terms of quality. I think we're punching above our weight early on.

It's almost one of those saves that I now don't want to play. The start has been so good that I am afraid of playing on and it going all wrong, as it typically does when FM decides to give you hope and then rips your heart out shortly afterwards!

Does anyone else get that feeling sometimes?

Maybe fm will rip my heart out shortly and send me back to the championship.

    UPDATE FOR SEPTEMBER 2018:

    Manager Comments for September 2018:

Our amazing start continued well into September.

We kicked off the month with an amazing 4-0 win over Middlesbrough and followed it up with a 4-1 win away to Sheffield Wednesday. We were on fire!

The 2-0 win over Walsall was a solid but muted affair. We got the job done though without ever really looking especially convincing. A solid point away to Reading followed.

We ended the month with two losses to bring us back down to earth. The loss in the League Cup was always on the cards really, particularly as I decided to field a reserve side. We actually played really well against our Premier League opponents but they were more ruthless in front of goal than we were, which is why they won the game.

The loss against Derby was awful. It was really a game we should have won. Nothing quite went right though. There were some poor performances and I made some poor decisions, I feel. We should have at least got a draw.

It brings us back down to earth and reminds us that we are still a work in progress.

I think he will keep that up for the season has some great stats especially for Championship should be looking at close to a goal a game striker. Great start Crouchy, might get to see you in the EPL not sure I have seen you there on FM before lol.

Forum curse has struck AB. He's gone a few games without scoring and played poorly. Seems to be suffering from complacency.

As for seeing me in the top flight, you probably haven't! I'm a Non-League/lower leagues man. By the time I get to the top, a new version of FM is usually out.

Havant & Waterlooville 2 – 0 SAINTS (Blue Square South)

I’m calling this an FA Cup hangover.

We were just awful here against the mid-table side. We went behind to a penalty in the first-half and then scored an own goal through Peter Smith to seal the deal for Havant & Waterlooville.

It was just a day to forget for us. Confidence isn’t so good now and we really need to get the side settled and pick up where we left off in the league.

    City scorers: None.
    City MoM: Ryan Carolan.
    Attendance at Westleigh Park: 416.

SAINTS 2 – 1 Dorchester Town (Blue Square South)

We made this as difficult as possible for ourselves.

All seemed to be going well when we took the lead through Paul Hakim on 24 minutes. However, Gary Cohen managed to get himself sent off before the half was up.

In the second-half we managed to concede a penalty early on and the Magpies levelled the score.

Dorchester looked like they were going to keep us out even as we switched to an attacking 4-3-2 formation. Paul Hakim had other ideas though and he finished off a lovely team move as we headed towards the last 10 minutes of the game. We held on for a most important win.

City scorers: Paul Hakim x 2.
    City MoM: Paul Hakim.
    Attendance at Clarence Park: 329.

Newport County 2 – 1 SAINTS (Blue Square South)

The Exiles are one of the favourites for the title and so it was always going to be a tough game here.

The disappointing thing is that we were probably worth a draw here. We bossed possession, equalled them on chances and I think we would have been good value for a point.

They scored quick two goals after half-an-hour. Here comes the disappointing part. They were both very soft goals and our ‘keeper should have done better.

I’ve noticed that Paul Bastock has been in decline over the last few months, especially in physical terms and particularly his agility. He is 39 years old. Unfortunately, he always declines quickly on Football Manager, whereas in real life old Bazza probably has quite a few seasons left in him!

Anyway, the goals we conceded confirmed to me that I should be looking for a new ‘keeper. I wanted to get Bazza through a whole season but we haven’t quite managed that. Still, he will have played the majority of games.

Back to the match, and Jason Norville pulled one back for us from the penalty spot just before half-time. Unfortunately, in the second-half, we never looked like pulling level, although we had a few chances.

Disappointing but we really need to move on. I’m looking for a little bit of a run to come along now as our form is all over the place.

    City scorers: Jason Norville (pen).
    City MoM: Sol Shields.
Attendance at the Newport Stadium: 827.

SAINTS 2 – 1 Bath City (Blue Square South)

It’s the derby of the Roman cities. Verulamium versus Aquae Sulis!

It was a really tight game here against Bath City. We just about edged it but Bath will be disappointed that they didn’t take at least a point.

Paul Hakim gave us an early lead and Chris Sullivan doubled it late in the second-half. Bath pulled one back in the last minute of the game but it was no more than a consolation.

A good win and perhaps a turning point now. I feel that a good run of form is just around the corner.

City scorers: Paul Hakim & Chris Sullivan.
    City MoM: Paul Hakim.
    Attendance at Clarence Park: 325.

SAINTS LOSE PAUL HAKIM TO INJURY. HAKS WILL BE OUT FOR UP TO 8 WEEKS WITH STRAINED KNEE LIGAMENTS.

    TRANSFER UPDATE:
As we came to the end of January, I managed to do a bit of business in the transfer market to strengthen the team.

First of all, I released striker Lamine Sagna, who had made 7 appearances for the club this season, scoring 1 goal in the FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round. The striker was on big wages and wasn’t playing, so he had to go. This freed up some funds for new signings.

I brought in a couple of young centre-backs on the cheap to start off with. You won’t hear much about Laurence Gaughan and Simon Dunn to begin with as they are signings for the future. They wanted next to nothing in wages so this was a good deal.

Next up, I brought in Nathan Silver, a young goalkeeper from Oxford United. He is intended to be Bastock’s understudy. Again, he is one for the future and wanted very little in terms of wages.

Finally, the next signing will either be a big flop or a masterstroke. I moved to bring back former St. Albans City legend Lee Clarke back to Clarence Park. Lee was with Welling but transfer listed and I couldn’t resist bringing him back. The former Saints captain has a few fitness problems caused by injuries over the years and has perhaps been in decline over the last few years. Make no mistake, this is a big gamble. I am intending to retrain him for a midfield position as I can see Clarke directing the play and being very effective in the midfield. We will have to wait and see if this is a good signing but hopefully it will lift everyone at the club. He comes on a fairly big wage but I’ve only signed him until the end of the season, so we’ll see how it goes and perhaps part again in the summer without anything really lost. In other words, he has until the end of the season to prove himself, and I either gain a quality player, or I release him with my lesson learnt.

    SAINTS 1 – 0 Weston-super-Mare (Blue Square South)

Don’t ask me how but Weston-super-Mare are top of the league. The relegation candidates are the surprise package of the season in a big way. So this result is actually pretty impressive.

Losing Paul Hakim to injury in our last game was obviously very disappointing but I brought in Craig Calver to deputise for him. Calver has been a disappointment since signing so I really wanted him to turn it around and show improvement today. Also starting was new goalkeeper Nathan Silver.

We got an early lead through Craig Calver who scored with a fine finish and I felt a great deal of relief that he had finally got off the mark at the club.

Nathan Silver, the new ‘keeper, had been doing quite well up until the half-hour mark where he managed to divert a cross into his own net. It never makes a good impression to score an own goal on your debut. This made it 1-1.

A draw was looking the most likely result until Jason Norville picked up the ball on the edge of the final third, played a quick one-two with Gary Cohen, and then went on to score with a terrific low finish past the goalkeeper. This goal came in the 87th minute and Weston-super-Mare had no time to recover. We had won a most important three points and this also meant back-to-back wins in the league for the first time since November. Terrific stuff!

City scorers: Craig Calver & Jason Norville.
    City MoM: Jason Norville.
    Attendance at Clarence Park: 330.
Was this meant to say 2-1? :P Going well so far crouchaldinho! Hope to catch up with your story before too long :P

Ah! after a couple of days of not getting any work done, and almost losing my job cos of it, I've caught up! Excellent progress mate! Hope I can emulate you with my current career with fantasy side Wheelers :P It's never easy with low reputation is it? I don't care what anyone says. It's not a money thing football... it's still a mental game, a game for real men! (and any Footbal Womanagers out there too it's also for real women )

I was about as annoyed as you can get at getting the lead and then throwing it away for the first two goals. Then conceding a third to make it 3-2 had me screaming at the dots in considerable agony and frustration.

And yet, we astonishingly came back to win the game 5-3. Extraordinary!
    I demand a rematch!

    UPDATE FOR OCTOBER 2018:

    Manager Comments for October 2018:

We've hit a patchy bit of form. The team still hasn't gelled particularly well so performances are a bit up and down but I think we're still overachieving for the most part.

We kicked off with a 1-0 win at home to Colchester that should have maybe been a bit more comfortable. No complaints about the three points though and I'm glad we managed to see the game out. A shock loss to Burnley at home followed. I say shock because our home form is usually very strong and we just didn't turn up and compete, which is really disappointing.

A 1-1 draw away to Plymouth was a bit 'smash and grab' and we were lucky to return to Hertfordshire with a point. Then there was yet another game settled by a single goal, this time in favour of Birmingham at St. Andrews. We were poor and they deserved it, to be quite honest. It just goes to show how close this league is when so many games are really tight and settled by just the one goal.

A morale boosting 2-0 win over Forest ended the month. A slightly disappointing one but this team is still a work in progress and I think it will take a few more months for us to settle properly.

This guy is basically a tortured genius with a really soft centre.

He has been underperforming in a big way ever since I posted this screenshot. Picking up 5.5 ratings and not scoring for 6 matches. Then, all of a sudden, at the beginning of November, this happens:

Championship: St. Albans City 7 - 0 Ipswich

    Formations & Starting Line-ups

    Overview & Match Details

I was expecting this to be a really tight and close fought game as well.

Five goals from Yegorov and a rating of 10! He was just unstoppable!

The big problem seems to be how to keep him on that form. He reacts really badly to pressure and seems to be a confidence player. As well as getting nervous all of the time, he also gets complacent really easily.

I don't use in-game editors and that kind of thing but, if I did, I wouldn't be surprised to see that this guy has some really off the wall hidden stats.

I'm going to have some fun managing him, that's for sure. Really hard to hit the sweet spot in terms of motivation and team talks with him!

I forgot to add that unfortunately I can't seem to get him some tutoring with anyone decent and worthwhile at the moment. I really need him to develop a 'linked player' pretty quickly, otherwise he will be stuck like this tortured genius striker forever!

Next up gents, I need some reassurance that I'm not the only huge FM nerd on this part of the forums. I really hope that someone else will find this just a little bit cool, and not just a little bit sad.

Basically, yesterday, I spent way too much of my Sunday afternoon creating a facegen/regen version of myself for my managerial photograph. And I feel quite proud of the final result.

I got this free software which analysed one of my real photographs and turned me into a facegen person. Then I just had to make a few minor changes, add some hair and hey presto!

Obviously, you guys have absolutely no idea what I look like in the first place, so you'll just have to take my word for it that this regen face looks weirdly and spookily like me.

The only way in which we really differ, is that my regen doppelgänger has a bit more hair than I do. I'm more follicly challenged than he is and a bit thinner on top. Other than that, it is an extremely striking likeness, right down to the stubble.

If anyone wants to know roughly how I did this then let me know and I will happily talk you through it. It's reasonably easy really. If I can do it, it must be easy to be honest!

This assistant feedback is more or less the last thing you want to see during a match.

The funny thing is that I ended up winning this match 1-0. All part of the masterplan, you see!

Genius manager or lucky git? You decide.

    UPDATE FOR NOVEMBER 2018:

    Manager Comments for November 2018:

I think it was always going to go downhill after starting the month with a 7-0 win.

A decent draw at Hartlepool was all right but then we lost narrowly to Watford away and Sheffield United at home. We sort of lost our way before thumping Wolves 3-0 but then drawing 1-1 at home to QPR to end the month with the feeling of a slight anticlimax.

We're running hot and cold at the moment. It's impossible to tell which team will turn up most weeks. At lot of it has to do with our erratic striker Yegorov who is on fire one minute and then needs to be taken off at half-time due to a 5.5 rating the next match. He is a bit infuriating really.

    UPDATE FOR DECEMBER 2018:

    Manager Comments for December 2018:

December and the beginning of January is always the toughest time. Cruel months in which your squad is sure to be fully tested as you cope with the never ending list of fixtures.

After an awful start at Hull to begin with, we got a bit of form together and went for three wins in a row. A loss against Portsmouth was a bit of a downer but a 4-0 win at home to Huddersfield on Boxing Day was the highlight of the Christmas period. We ended the month with a disappointing result at Norwich but all in all I think we've done quite well out of this run of games.

Looking strong at the halfway mark C. . There's some big teams in and around the playoffs, it's gonna be tough but i'm sure you'll be up there.
