If you think Arsenal are sleeping giants then there is something wrong

There are quite a few. Newcastle, Leeds, Charlton, Forest, Norwich, Oxford United (Had to put that in), Gateshead (Not really a giant bit wiki their history).

as a fan of none of these teams i would say from a neutral standpoint, nottingham forest, leeds or ipswich due to thier previous european performances
i dont believe any prem team can be classed as a sleeping giant tbh

I would consider premier clubs to be sleeping giants, because untill they are regularly challanging for honours or have recently won a competition then they are still asleep.

Which is why I couldn't include Everton (finshed in the top 7 for the last few seasons) so are regualrly challanging or Spurs (won League Cup recently)

But Wolves were a big force in football once being dubbed 'champions of the world' and also competed in the first UEFA Cup Final against Spurs.

Completely agree with CooCooKaJoo any club inside the premiership cant really be classed a sleeping giant as they are a giant that is up the bean stork and in the clouds shall we say but the three teams he said that have had a golden egg (european title) before but are still below the clouds!

Notts Forest, Leeds, Genoa, Napoli, if you're counting Ipswich then Oviedo might also be included.

Oh silly me, I missed the "English" part, sorry all ^^

Techinically, AFC Wimbledon are doing the best they've ever done, and if they continue to rise up the league(s), which it looks like they will, then they will be continuing that trend. And I'm not too sure about Rotherham.

I like the way you think.

The real sleeping giants would most probably have to be teams such as Bradford, Forest in a way, Norwich City, Southampton, and my personal favourite, Huddersfield Town - a team that's won an F.A Cup back in the thirties and 3 league championships, but hardly anything since.

Oh, and the infamous Leeds United... http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foot..._2/8038226.stm

Preston? The first ever English champions, and were the original 'Invincibles', going unbeaten in the league for the season.

Cardiff City? Jack are you being serious?

Newport County, now there's are real sleeping giant. Reached the hights of the 2nd tier of English football back in the late 30's only to see their side torn apart by World War 2. Went out of buisness in the late 80's and reformed. Now looking at promotion to the Blue Square Premier with the long term aim of returning to the Football League.

Birmingham are always know as sleeping giants in the press and tv due to being from the second city and not living up to that fame or in the shadow of villa(Goes to wash his mouth out now lol)

Newcastle, Charlton, Nottingham Forest, Sheffield United, Ipswich, Sheffield Wednesday, Coventry, Norwich, Southhampton, Leeds, Milwall, Notts County, Chester City, Luton Town, Oxford, York, AFC Wimbledon, Campbrdige.

These are the ones I would recommend:

Coventry, Leeds, Norwich, Southhampton, Milwall, Notts County, Luton Town, AFC Wimbledon.

And a special mention to Chester City, who were just dissolved.

Its because AFC Wimboldon (and not MK dons) are the closest thing to Wimboldon who were in the prem durign the late 1990s

I know that, but AFC Wimbledon have nothing to do with what Wimbledon achieved. They've never been giants. They're just a small club that have been given a massive boost by having a much bigger fan base then most clubs at their level due to the death of Wimbledon.

I don't really see how any team in the Premier League can be called a sleeping giant? Even calling a championship team a sleeping giant is a bit of a push.

Especially when one of them has only been down there one season and is looking pretty much a certainty to go straight back up.

Of those three I think that Liverpool are the only ones that could be considered sleeping giants when you take into account that the last time they won the league irl was 1990 and since they are pretty inconsistent irl I don't think they'll be winning the league any time soon.

    Preston North End...

Last won the top flight of English football in 1889 and 1890, the first two seasons of the football league.

    ...and here they are

I think the players without moustaches, must have been reserves.

I only see one player with a moustache.

I present Scottish amateur club Queen's Park, who not only won everything in the early days of Scottish football but also entered the FA Cup twice and reached the final on both occasions.

I also give you Oxford University, who won the FA Cup once and reached the final on three other occasions.

Sleeping Giant could be any team from a big City that hasn't achieved for years, or is possibly in a lowere division. Most obvious are Leeds, Forest, Wednesday, Bristol City, Derby & Leicester

Leeds United have to be the biggest sleeping giants. The country's first super team in the 1960's and 1970's, a bleak 1980's followed by the title in 1992, and being regular finishers within the top five (or four in 99, 00, 01 and 02) before relegation in 2004. We're the country's biggest underachievers by far, and our trophy cabinet is vey bare compared to what should have been, if it wasn't for outside influences and major injustices). Newcastle on the other hand just have a large fanbase, but that's always to be expected when Sunderland is the closest club (15 miles, another club with a large fanbase), then it's Harlepool (30 miles, very, very small club who average about 3,000ish i think), then you have Boro (40 miles or so, another small club with a small fanbase), then Darlo (a league two club set for relegation to the Div4), then last but not least you have another very small club in Carlisle, the other side of the Lake District about 50/60 miles away who only average a few thousand, closest to that you have Leeds, 100 miles or so away. So all considering, the fanbase is always going to be large, especially in a city that holds 273,000, I daren't think of the whole far North East/West.

In the 50/60 miles from Leeds, we have Bradford (okay, I'll give you that one - a nothing club), then Huddersfield, the two Sheffield's, Barnsley, the two Manchester's, all those other clubs (Burnley, Wigan, Preston etc) as well as Hull nearby. Nationally, Newcastle have a larger fanbase than Leeds, but worldwide, Leeds win hands down. Newcastle's last trophy of any note came in 1955, the league last in 1927. They've never been a big club in post-war football, and not even a founder member of the Premiership (which Leeds entered as champions of England). Since the turn of the millennium, Leeds have had 3 consecutive top four finishes, as well as two European finals (UEFA cup and Champions League).

Newcastle United are very much a 'delusion of granduer' football club, whereas Leeds are the real deal. Ridsdale appointing two clowns in O'Leary and Venables (when he had the decision to twice appoint O'Neill) led to us falling out of the elite of the Premiership top four, down the table into Div2 with huge debts. Bates took over, and extended that other clown (Blackwell) a 3-year contract, then sacked him before appointing his mate Wise (who ironically helped take Newcastle down) who relegated us to Div3. Bates then cost us 15 points, before Bates appointed another clown (McAllister, great player, great guy, bad manager) then, he appointed the best thing to happen to us in years - Simon Grayson. Leeds are on their way back now. Newcastle will go up this season, but will face another season of fighting relegation, whereas Leeds will kick on, and on. Leeds are the only sleeping giants in English football.

Shouts for Nottm Forest? Three years of success under Clough don't cut it for me. Coventry? Yeah, right. Wednesday, no, not really. Derby and Leicester... come on! Who mentioned Bristol City, Notts County, Norwich, Southampton, Milwall, Cardiff and Bradford et al?!! You taking the michael?

I only see one player with a moustache.

I present Scottish amateur club Queen's Park, who not only won everything in the early days of Scottish football but also entered the FA Cup twice and reached the final on both occasions.
    .
There is at least 9 players with a moustache in there.

Also as Queens park are in the Scottish league i doubt they can be called a sleeping giant of english football.

Come on Nobby... get those beer goggles off and look properly. There's only one non-moustachioed player in that picture

Nottingham and Derby aren't big cities. I lived in Nottingham for three years, so I can backup my claim on that one.
